Lindsay Lohan’s Legal Troubles: A Timeline

Actress’ 90-day jail sentence is hardly her first brush with the law. By Kelley L. Carter Lindsay Lohan in court Tuesday Photo: MTV News Lindsay Lohan was sentenced to 90 days in jail and 90 days in a drug rehab center on Tuesday (July 6) for violating probation, but it was hardly the actress’ first brush with the law. MTV News takes a look back at Lohan’s legal issues, as well as her trouble with drugs and drinking: February 2, 2005 : A personal-injury suit is filed against Lohan by Eddie Pamilton and Ilex Harris, who claim the actress injured them in a traffic accident that took place the year before. October 4, 2005 : Lohan is transported to a hospital for minor injuries after she crashed her car into another vehicle in West Hollywood, California. The then-19-year-old actress collided into the passenger’s side of a van that was turning in front of her, which then collided with a parked van. A passenger in Lohan’s car and the driver of the van suffered moderate injuries and were transported by ambulance to an undisclosed hospital. January 2006 : Vanity Fair reports that Lohan admitted she had bulimia during an interview, but Lohan denies that she has an eating disorder . The article quotes Lohan as saying, “I was sick. Everyone was scared. And I was scared too. I had people sit me down and say, ‘You’re going to die if you don’t take care of yourself.’ ” January 2007 : Lohan checks into rehab for the first time. “I have made a proactive decision to take care of my personal health,” the singer says in a statement. “I appreciate your well wishes and ask that you please respect my privacy at this time.” In December, Lohan’s publicist revealed that Lohan had been voluntarily attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. May 26, 2007 : Lohan gets arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after her Mercedes convertible strikes a curb in Los Angeles. Police reported that they found a substance they believe to be cocaine at the scene. May 28, 2007 : Lohan checks into rehab again . “Lindsay admitted herself to an intensive medical rehabilitation facility on Memorial Day,” a representative for the singer/actress says in a statement. “Because this is a medical matter, it is our hope that the press will appreciate the seriousness of the situation and respect the privacy of Lindsay as well as the other patients receiving treatment at the facility.” June 14, 2007 : Lohan is accused of being drunk when she crashed into a parked van in Beverly Hills in October 2005, according to a lawsuit. Raymundo Ortega claims Lohan — who was 19 years old at the time — “consumed alcohol and became intoxicated” at the Ivy restaurant before the accident. July, 14, 2007 : Lohan checks out of Promises rehab facility after more than six weeks and celebrates the end of her 45-day stay by soberly partying with some friends at Pure nightclub in Las Vegas. July 24, 2007 : Less than two weeks after leaving a rehabilitation facility, Lohan is pulled over by police early in the morning and arrested on five counts, including driving under the influence of alcohol, driving on a suspended license and possession of narcotics. Lohan checks into an undisclosed rehab facility hours after the arrest. August 14, 2007 : Lohan gets sued again , this time for assault and negligence by one of the passengers who was traveling in the car the actress allegedly chased the month prior while driving under the influence. August 23, 2007 : Lohan gets charged with seven misdemeanor counts for her two DUI arrests earlier that year. She reaches a plea deal, saying she would spend one day in jail, serve 10 days of community service and complete a drug-treatment program. Lohan is placed on 36 months’ probation and required to complete an 18-month alcohol-education program and pay hundreds of dollars in fines. She also is to finish a three-day county coroner program that required her to visit a morgue and talk to victims of drunken drivers. “It is clear to me that my life has become completely unmanageable because I am addicted to alcohol and drugs,” Lohan writes in a statement released to MTV News. October 5, 2007 : Lohan leaves a two-month rehab stint at the Cirque Lodge Treatment Center in Utah. She is also seen with her estranged father, Michael, who was carrying her suitcases. December 31, 2007 : In a video posted on TMZ, Lohan drinks straight from a bottle of champagne while partying in Italy. October 16, 2009 : Lohan shows up more than an hour late to a probation hearing in Beverly Hills for a progress review on her two DUI cases. She gets another year of probation tacked on due to failure to complete alcohol-education classes as required. April 26, 2010 : Lohan is asked to leave the film “The Other Side.” The director says Lohan was fired because she is not “bankable.” June 8, 2010 : A Beverly Hills judge issues an arrest warrant for Lohan and orders her to post $200,000 bail after she violates a court order to not consume alcohol while wearing a SCRAM alcohol-monitoring ankle bracelet . The warrant is recalled after bail is posted . July 6, 2010 : Lohan is sentenced to 90 days in jail and 90 days in rehab for violating her probation. Lindsay Lohan Likely To Serve A Fraction Of Her Sentence

L.A. County Sheriff spokesman says nonviolent female offenders generally only serve 25 percent or less of their sentences. By Kelley L. Carter Lindsay Lohan in court Tuesday Photo: Dave McNew/ Getty Images Right after Lindsay Lohan was sentenced to 90 days in jail for violating probation, a Los Angeles County Sheriff spokesman said she likely will only serve a fraction of the time. Steve Whitmore talked to reporters outside of the court Tuesday (July 6) and said that, because of overcrowding, women sent to jail for nonviolent crimes generally only serve 25 percent or less of their sentence. The exact time will depend on the wording of the judge’s order and the level of overcrowding, reports the Los Angeles Times. “A person [of] such notoriety will be kept away from the general population,” Whitmore added. Lohan, 24, also was sentenced to 90 days of inpatient rehab. The actress was tearful earlier in court before Judge Marsha N. Revel’s sentencing. “I wasn’t trying to get special treatment,” Lohan said in court. “I have to provide for myself. I have to work. Having said that, I did everything to balance my jobs and showing up. I’m not taking this as a joke. It’s my life. It’s my career. … I take responsibility for my actions. I’ve tried to do the best I can. It’s been such a long haul. I don’t want you to think that I don’t respect you.” Her plea wasn’t enough. Lohan had failed to attend alcohol-education classes , and the judge also cited several instances from over the past few years, saying the actress lied about drinking and taking drugs. “It’s like someone who cheats but doesn’t think it’s cheating if they don’t get caught,” Revel said in court. Lohan will serve her time in Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood. She is scheduled to begin her sentence July 20. Lil’ Kim Says Collabo With Rihanna Is ‘Probably In The Works’

‘I’m 90 percent sure that a song is probably in the works,’ Kim says. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lil’ Kim Photo: Getty Images Hip-hop diva Lil’ Kim is looking to collaborate with pop princess Rihanna. The MC recently opened up to Australia’s Lifelounge about her dream collaboration and singled out the chart-topping singer as an artist she’d like to work with. “I’m a huge [Rihanna] fan and she’s a friend of mine, so I’m almost guessing — if I had to guess — I’m 90 percent sure that a song is probably in the works,” Kim told the magazine’s website , hinting that she and Rihanna may have already touched base about teaming up on a record. However, Kim said that she’s not stressing the potential collaboration and wants to spring the track on the world if, and when, the time is right. “I look at it this way: If it happens, it happens. And it should be a surprise. It shouldn’t be something that people are anticipating, or have their own personal opinions on it before it even comes out,” the rapper said. Whether or not a Kim/Rihanna collabo jumps off, the MC maintained that she has a lot of love for the singer. “I think she’s great.” The potential collaboration is just another Lil’ Kim matchup that has been thrown around. Earlier this year, Ludacris said that Kim and Nicki Minaj should hook up for a track and end the drama between the two femcees. “I think if Lil’ Kim and Nicki Minaj do a record together it’s gonna kill the entire industry,” Luda told MTV News last month . “You don’t have that many women in the industry so the lane is wide open.” Would you like to see Lil’ Kim join forces with Rihanna? ‘Last Airbender 2’ Will Be ‘Darker,’ M. Night Shyamalan Says

Sequel has not been green-lit, but writer/director already has two scripts in the works. By Brian Warmoth M. Night Shyamalan Photo: MTV News If a $53.3 million holiday weekend proves successful enough to keep M. Night Shyamalan around for a “Last Airbender” sequel, he knows what he wants to do — and he wants to do it darkly. Asked about his intentions going forward, the “Sixth Sense” and “Signs” director confirmed that he has much of “The Last Airbender 2” already mapped out. “I do,” Shyamalan told MTV News. “The third is more ambiguous, but the second one, I’ve written a draft that I’m really happy with and is darker and richer, and it has a wonderful antagonist in it in Azula, who’s kind of like our only real, pure antagonist in the series, so I’m excited about that.” His description of the story implies that Summer Bishil’s character from the film currently in theaters has plenty left to do onscreen as Aang (Noah Ringer) continues his fight against the Fire Nation. As far as what the story will be about and which characters could enter or exit the cast, those decisions may have to wait for Paramount’s decision on the franchise’s fate. If things proceed, Shyamalan has already shared a few details that could play into his intentions. The elite female Kyoshi Warriors , for instance, will likely play a larger role. “I probably won’t show the Kyoshi Warriors because I want to save them for the second movie, because I’m going to have to introduce them all over again,” he said while explaining what would and would not show up in the “Last Airbender” DVD and Blu-Ray’s deleted scenes . The characters were initially included in the first film, but circumstances and editing decisions eventually moved them out of the spotlight. “We shot [the scene] and [the Kyoshi Warriors] were amazing, and we spent an unbelievable amount of time choreographing them,” he said. “And they just distracted from the movie, because the movie wasn’t about them.” Given that he became much more comfortable with filming in 3-D during his first “Airbender,” another round of 3-D filming with the same crew would make sense unless Hollywood’s affection for the evolving medium changes overnight. In the meantime, Shyamalan sounds like he’s ready to go if and when an “Airbender” sequel gets the go-ahead. Lindsay Lohan Skipped Alcohol Education Classes, Hearing Reveals

In an impassioned letter, actress’ estranged dad asks court to send his daughter to an inpatient rehab facility. By Gil Kaufman Lindsay Lohan (file) Photo: Toby Canham/ Getty Images It was a rough day in court for Lindsay Lohan on Tuesday (July 6) during an appearance to determine whether she violated her probation in a 2007 DUI case . The hearing turned into an hours-long marathon that featured an impassioned letter from the “Mean Girls” star’s estranged father and allegations that she’d skipped court-mandated alcohol-education classes and broke her probation by drinking. According to TMZ , the co-owner of the Right On program — where Lohan was supposed to be attending alcohol-education classes once a week — said Lindsay violated the program several times by failing to attend the courses. In both May and August 2009, Right On’s Cheryl Marshall told the judge that Lohan was not in compliance with the program and had deemed her excuses for missing classes as “endless and disrespectful.” In all, Marshall told judge Marsha Revel that Lohan missed classes on nine separate occasions. Conscious of not starting off on the wrong foot with the judge, Lohan, 24, showed up to court 10 minutes early, dressed in a conservative black T-shirt and dark slacks. Some things went Lohan’s way, though, as when Revel ruled that prosecutors could not present alleged eyewitness evidence that Lindsay was drinking at an MTV Movie Awards afterparty on June 7, the night her SCRAM bracelet went off, signaling the presence of alcohol. People magazine reported that Judge Revel said Lohan’s blood alcohol level tested “at .03 just before midnight on June 7, and by 4 a.m. it was back to zero.” Lohan’s lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, argued that the alert may have been a false reading. If Lohan is found guilty of violating her probation, she could face up to six months in jail. TMZ also reported that Lohan — who was reportedly punched in the face during a birthday celebration at a Los Angeles bar last week — was served with papers in a civil lawsuit on her way into the courthouse for Tuesday morning’s session. In that suit, she is being sued for allegedly not paying for more than $17,000 worth of clothing and accessories from a store called Church. Though Revel would not let father Michael Lohan read his letter in court, TMZ reportedly obtained a copy of the document, in which Michael begs the judge to make sure Lindsay’s prescription-drug use is carefully monitored. Knowing that Revel could send his daughter to jail for the alleged violations, Lohan begged the court to avoid that measure on a number of grounds. “Your honor is aware that because of the current overcrowding in Los Angeles jails, misdemeanor, non-violent offenders like Lindsay serve only a fraction of their terms,” read the letter from Michael Lohan’s attorney. “In Lindsay’s case, her last term of incarceration lasted only 84 minutes. This not only made a laughingstock of our criminal justice system in the eyes of the world … but taught her that jail is a revolving door and poses no real threat or deterrent.” Should Revel find Lohan guilty, Michael asked that the judge consider sending his daughter to a “very private” inpatient residential rehab facility in New York, which, unlike the other rehabs Lindsay’s been to, would include family therapy. If Lohan was not found guilty, Michael supports an order to make her keep wearing the SCRAM bracelet and receiving random drug tests. Finally, “Michael also respectfully requests that Lindsay’s prescription-drug use be carefully monitored via the random drug testing. As the court is well aware, prescription-drug abuse is an epidemic among young people. If prescription drugs are excluded from testing, Lindsay may use that loophole to become intoxicated and pose a danger to herself and others. Michael desperately wants to avoid seeing his daughter become the next Hollywood statistic.” At press time, Judge Revel had not yet ruled in the case. Related Artists Lindsay Lohan

Prince Insists ‘The Internet’s Completely Over’

‘I don’t see why I should give my music to iTunes or anyone else,’ singer says of digital sales. By Mawuse Ziegbe Prince Photo: Jens Dige/Scanpix/AFP Photo Don’t expect pop legend Prince to join the army of celebs oversharing on Twitter or ranting on Facebook. The rock god has proclaimed the Internet a thing of the past, calling the World Wide Web “outdated.” “The Internet’s completely over,” Prince told the U.K.’s Daily Mirror . It appears the pop god wants fans to head to an old-fashion record store to pick up his upcoming album 20Ten, as the icon is not OK with selling his latest music through an e-retailer. “I don’t see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won’t pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can’t get it.” The Purple One didn’t stop his critique at e-commerce and chalked up his lack of interest in the Internet as a whole to the medium’s lack of coolness. “The Internet’s like MTV,” said Prince, comparing the Web to the media company. “At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated.” It’s probably safe to assume that Prince is neither a Mac nor a PC — the “Purple Rain” singer also lambasted the proliferation of technical devices and said, “All these computers and digital gadgets are no good.” The music luminary, who is releasing 20Ten for free in the U.K. with copies of the Mirror on Saturday (July 10), insisted that users would be better off without their digital devices. “They just fill your head with numbers and that can’t be good for you.” In addition to slamming all things digital, Prince also directed some criticism inward. The influential singer and instrumentalist revealed that since he feels he’s been advancing his craft over the years, he’s embarrassed by his earlier recordings. “Someone told me they saw me at my peak, but how do they know when my peak is? I think I’m improving all the time,” he said. “When I listen to my old records I’m ashamed of how I played then.” The perennially ageless singer also insisted that a lifetime of rocking out has preserved his youthful appearance. “Playing electric guitar your whole life does something to you. I’m convinced all that electricity racing through my body made me keep my hair,” he offered. While the pop icon may be over his earlier music, he is still regarded by many as a living legend. Prince was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2010 BET Awards , as stars like Patti LaBelle and Alicia Keys took to the stage to celebrate the artist’s massively successful and hugely influential career. Mary J. Blige Gives Command Performance At Essence Music Festival

Singer whips crowd into frenzy with classics like ‘Real Love,’ ‘I’m Going Down,’ as Alicia Keys stumbles during near-flawless show. By Shaheem Reid Mary J. Blige performs at the 2010 Essence Music Festival Photo: Taylor Hill/ FilmMagic The 16th annual Essence Music Festival ended in triumph in the early hours of Monday morning, as Earth Wind & Fire closed out the weekend with hits like “September” and “Reasons.” For several days, Essence magazine — celebrating its 40th anniversary this year — and its 20-plus sponsors, including Coca-Cola, Olay and Ford, drove home messages of empowerment, self-esteem and self-awareness. By day, thousands hit New Orleans’ Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, where dozens of companies had set up booths and where acts like Keith Sweat and El DeBarge performed. Those passing through the convention center were also treated to good old celebrity sightings like T.I. and comedian/author Steve Harvey, who led relationship talks. At night, of course, it was all about the music at the Louisiana Superdome. Trey Songz, Estelle, Kid ‘N Play, Doug E. Fresh, LL Cool J, Jill Scott, Joe, Gladys Knight and Keri Hilson were among dozens of performers who opened both on the main stage and the smaller lounge stages. And the headliners were big guns: Janet Jackson kicked things off Friday, Saturday belonged to Alicia Keys and on Sunday night, though Earth Wind & Fire were last on the lineup, it was all about Mary. Mary J. Blige walked away with the performance of the weekend, showing a definitive command of the audience. The queen of hip-hop soul had the New Orleans crowd in a frenzy like a Reggie Bush touchdown, opening up her catalog and doling out cherished ditties such as “Real Love.” When Blige brought out Trey Songz to sing on “We Got Hood Love,” Trigger, of course, got another resounding ovation from the ladies. “Thank you for helping your big sister out,” Mary told Trey. “Sweet Thang” was huge, likely going over heavy because of its sing-along factor, and the audience was so enthralled on “I’m Going Down,” Mary only had to sing one line to tear the roof off the Dome. “Time on my hands, since you been away boy,” the female fans roared, taking over the reins of the record. “Sleep doesn’t come easy,” Mary soon joined in, but the hypnotized spectators kept singing the lyrics. After the record, Blige struck a b-girl pose with her fist balled almost all the way up and her thumb touching her chin. “Let me say this, the Mary J. Blige fans are in the building. I’m having a great time,” Mary said before complimenting the ladies on how good they were looking and how great they sounded. “We’ve reached that point in the night when we have to address some things,” she continued. The Queen then advised the women that some people will try to push them down, and that there’s only one way to handle those people: Tell them you’re trying to get up. “We will have no more drama,” she insisted, following up with “No More Drama.” “I may not be perfect for you, but I’m perfect for me,” Mary told the ladies. She also said she was cool with her imperfections. “It can only make me better to know I am imperfect. … It’s only one you baby. It’s only one you, original, baby.” The tempo soon changed up: “I wanna keep y’all hype right now. Keep y’all right,” she said. T.I. then came onstage for “Good Love” and the fans went crazy. Mary hugged Tip and he saluted the crowd. Blige’s set ended with her smashes “Family Affair” and “Be Without You.” The night before, the highlight on the bill was Alicia Keys, who was introduced by Jada Pinkett Smith. The five-months pregnant singer, who appeared to be standing on six-inch heels, slipped and fell onstage during “Love Is Blind,” but she never missed a beat (her vocals were nearly flawless) or a lyric. She got right back up and went to the piano and played. Keys’ set had several signature moments, including “You Don’t Know My Name” and “Fallin’.” And though she did show her skills on the piano for cuts like “Diary,” A.K. got up and danced on several selections, including “Un-thinkable (I’m Ready).” Related Photos Essence Music Festival Takes Over New Orleans Superdome Related Artists Mary J. Kelis Says Recording Flesh Tone Was ‘Freeing’

‘I recorded it at home … literally laying on my couch,’ the singer laughs to MTV News of new album. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Steven Roberts Kelis Photo: MTV News The last couple of years have been a whirlwind for Kelis . She dealt with the demise of her marriage to Nas, celebrated the subsequent birth of her son, Knight, with the rapper and on Tuesday (July 6), the release of Flesh Tone, her first studio album in four years. We recently caught up with the singer, who said making the electro-infused album was liberating, noting that she hadn’t been hampered by the demands of her record label or any other outside influence. “Recording this album was a really freeing experience for me,” Kelis told MTV News. “There was no, like, label or opinion — there was no business involved. It’s great to be able to make music and to do this for a living. But the reality is when you can take [the] business out of the creation of music, is when it’s at its best,” Kelis said, adding, “It was just me.” The eclectic singer also divulged that the studio process was not only cathartic but cozy. “I recorded it at home and I recorded it, like, literally laying on my couch. It’s just the most comfortable way to possibly record an album with, like, snacks next to me,” Kelis laughed. “It was awesome.” According to Kelis, Flesh Tone, which includes the thumping electro-house track “4th of July (Fireworks)” and the chart-topping dance hit “Acapella,” touches on a few themes, from getting in tune with one’s spirituality to appreciating the little things in life. “The first thing is, just, like, God, and really being really blessed,” Kelis said. “I was pregnant, so I was made aware of a lot of things that I think we take for granted.” She revealed that even though it had been years since her last album, she hadn’t expected to be back on the scene for a while. “I didn’t plan on doing another record this soon. I know it’s been four years but for me it’s been really soon.” Feeling free is another topic that runs through Flesh Tone, and she addresses it most specifically on songs like “4th of July (Fireworks).” “That record, like most of the records on the album, is about, there’s a freedom in surrender and just … love, and life and baby,” said Kelis, whose son was born in July 2009. “Fireworks is … to me a great way to explain something, like, magnificent.” What do you think of Kelis’ new album?
