Injured Madina Lake Bassist Is In ‘Tenuous Situation,’ Brother Says

‘Honestly it’s like walking on glass,’ Nathan Leone says of brother Matthew, who was seriously injured in assault. By James Montgomery Matthew Leone Photo: Steve Thorne/ Getty Images More than a week after he was badly beaten and left unconscious on the streets of Chicago, Madina Lake bassist Matthew Leone has been discharged from the hospital and is resting at his brother — and Madina Lake frontman — Nathan’s apartment. But obviously, he’s still far from a complete recovery from the attack — which happened after he attempted to intervene in a domestic dispute and left him with a broken nose and jaw, a fractured skull, and hemorrhaging so severe on his brain that doctors were forced to remove a third of his skull. And now, with a second surgery scheduled for July 16, the responsibility of keeping him stable now largely rests on Nathan Leone’s shoulders. And, as Nathan told MTV News on Wednesday (July 7), things are still very much touch-and-go. “Honestly it’s like walking on glass, because I have to make sure absolutely nothing happens to him, have to keep him safe and protected and healing, and then, there’s the brain surgery, with all the risks of that,” Nathan said. “It’s a very tenuous situation. He can’t roll over, can’t really rest the side of his head on anything, and he can’t get up and walk around, even though he very much wants to. He spends most of the day right in the middle of my bed, so he can’t roll off at night. I’ve been sleeping on the couch.” Leone said that Matthew is awake, aware and speaking — “It’s not anything profound,” he chuckled — and that right now, the main focus is just making sure he remains comfortable and safe until his surgery, at which point, doctors will attempt to re-attach the portion of his skull they removed. “He’s slowly but surely getting his strength back, but it’s still hard, because not only is his surgery upcoming, but any time you have a neurological trauma, the long-term effects are unknown, and can be for up to a year,” Nathan said. “So, right now, it’s a situation where we have all this time until the surgery, and you’re holding your breath that everything is stable until then. Then you need that surgery to go perfectly, and from there it’s another four to six weeks of recovery. So hopefully everything goes as well as can possible.” In the mean time, there’s still the matter of the pending case against Matthew’s alleged attacker, 33-year-old Justin Pivec , which Nathan can’t talk about for legal reasons (“You have no idea how badly I want to say something,” he sighed), and the ongoing efforts by Madina Lake’s management to raise funds to help with Matthew’s mounting medical costs — efforts which have left Nathan amazed and his brother more than a little embarrassed. “In some ways he’s a shy person, and the attention that’s come from this is something he’s not ecstatic about, but at the same time, it’s just overwhelmingly positive, and of course it makes him feel much better,” Nathan said. “Everyone’s been so amazingly supportive, really, I can’t express what it means to all of us.” And though all of this has obviously taken up the majority of his focus, Nathan said that he and his Madina Lake bandmates met on Tuesday night to discuss just how Matthew’s injuries will affect the future of their band. And, from the sound of things, they’re planning to push on with Matthew at their side, as much as possible. “We have the Sonisphere Festival coming up in UK, and we scheduled a few headlining dates around that, and we decided last night that we’re going to commit to playing them, and we’re not going to hire a bass player to fill in,” Nathan said. “Instead, if it’s possible, we’re going to try to have Matthew record his bass tracks here, and then run them when we play live. We’re not going to hire a new bass player [for the shows] … we don’t want anyone to take his place. So, if he can pick up a bass, he’s going to play his parts.” Share your get-well wishes for Matthew Leone in the comments below. Related Artists Madina Lake

Lady Gaga’s Grammy Snub Prompts Rule Change

The Recording Academy will allow previous nominees to be eligible for Best New Artist. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lady Gaga Photo: Kristian Dowling/ Getty Images Lady Gaga’s wildly successful entry into the music scene actually hampered her chances of scoring a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist this year because of the Recording Academy’s previous eligibility guidelines. Although Gaga had a major 2009, following the chart-topping success of her debut album The Fame , her earlier nod for Best Dance Recording for “Just Dance” barred the star from being considered for Best New Artist at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards. In light of the Gaga situation, the Recording Academy has announced that artists who have received previous nominations may still be eligible for the Best New Artist trophy. “If an artist/group is nominated (but does not win) for the release of a single or as a featured artist or collaborator on a compilation or other artist’s album before the artist/group has released an entire album (and becomes eligible in this category for the first time), the artist/group may enter this category in the eligibility year during which his/her/their first album is released,” the academy said in a statement . The academy also acknowledged that the changes reflect the fact that many artists appear as featured guests on hit singles before releasing a full-length debut. “More and more, the first release of a new artist is as a featured artist on someone else’s album, or the new artist may release a single long before the release of his/her/their entire first album. By current rules, if the other artist’s album or the new artist’s single receives a nomination, the new artist may never have the opportunity to compete in the Best New Artist category,” the statement continued. “With this change, each artist will have at least one opportunity to enter in this important and highly visible category.” According to The Associated Press , academy President Neil Portnow acknowledged that the Gaga oversight was a factor in changing the eligibility requirements. “There will be some changes so that particular situation won’t repeat itself,” Portnow said. The changes will immediately go into effect and will be reflected in the nominations for the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2011. Eminem’s Recovery Goes Platinum, Stays Healthy At #1

Drake’s Thank Me Later holds onto Billboard #2, while ‘Eclipse’ soundtrack jumps up to #3 with movie’s release. By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage He may not have crossed the platinum plateau in his first week on shelves, but Eminem cruised past it in the second week, as Recovery moved another 313,000 copies to hold on to the #1 spot on next week’s Billboard 200 albums chart. Despite a 58 percent sales dip, Slim Shady bested all comers with his latest, as his two-week total went up over 1 million, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. That was more than enough to keep beating Drake ‘s Thank Me Later, which sold 105,000 copies for a three-week total just shy of 709,000 and the #2 slot on the chart. And after “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” smashed box-office records last week, the soundtrack moves up seven spots to #3 (65,000, up 69 percent). The only newcomers in the top 10 are which lands at #4 in its first week (58,000) and Warped Tour rappers 3OH!3 , whose Streets of Gold comes in at #7 (41,000). The rest of the top 10 is made of familiar faces: the NOW 34 collection (#5, 45,000), Justin Bieber ‘s My World 2.0 (#6, 41,000), Jack Johnson ‘s To the Sea (#8, 35,000), Miley Cyrus ‘ Can’t Be Tamed (dropping six spots to #9 as sales tailed off by 68 percent to 32,000) and Lady Antebellum ‘s Need You Now (#10, 30,000). Further down the line, disco revivalists Scissor Sisters debut at #18 with Night Work (18,000), and the score for “Eclipse” is close behind at #20 (17,000). The march down the charts continues for Christina Aguilera ‘s Bionic , which falls another 10 spots in its fourth week on the charts, dropping to #32 on sales of 12,000 for a one-month total of just under 182,000. Indie faves Wolf Parade land at #48 with Expo 86 (8,000), and punk survivor Alejandro Escovedo , with a little help from Bruce Springsteen , debuts at #101 with Street Songs of Love (5,000). Over on the iTunes charts, Eminem holds onto #1 on the album tally, with the “Eclipse” soundtrack surging up six spots to #2, followed by Drake, 3OH!3, The-Dream, Johnson, Scissor Sisters, the “Eclipse” score, Hillsong Live ‘s A Beautiful Exchange and the Roots’ How I Got Over . The recent releases by Cyrus, Ozzy Osbourne , Sarah McLachlan and B.o.B have all been knocked out of the top 10. Though iTunes doesn’t provide sales data, suffice it to say that Katy Perry ‘s “California Gurls” is hanging strong on the singles list, knocking Slim Shady out of the #1 spot he held last week with his Rihanna duet, “Love the Way You Lie.” Taio Cruz has to settle for moving up six spots to #3 with “Dynamite,” followed by B.o.B’s “Airplanes, Travie McCoy ‘s “Billionaire,” Mike Posner ‘s “Cooler Than Me” and Jason DeRulo ‘s “Ridin’ Solo.” The singles chart is filled out by Eminem again at #8 with “Not Afraid,” Usher at #9 with “OMG” and Drake’s “Find Your Love” at #10. Look for chart debuts next week from Big Boi, Kelis , Enrique Iglesias and Kylie Minogue . Lady Gaga’s Monsters Beat The Heat For ‘Dream Come True’ MSG Show

‘Everything was about New York today,’ one fan notes after Gaga’s headlining debut at Madison Square Garden. By MTV News Staff Lady Gaga performs at Madison Square Garden in NYC on June 6 Photo: Derek Storm/ Splash News When Lady Gaga took to the stage at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night, the singer said she was thankful for the chance to headline for the first time at the storied midtown venue. Her little monsters were equally thankful for the chance to see Gaga make the momentous career step in her hometown. “It’s 110 degrees in New York City right now, and I’m from Montana — it is savagely hot here and I’m dying in the heat, but it was definitely worth it,” Beau told MTV News as she left MSG. “She started crying in the beginning, and she was like, ‘This is my teenage dream come true, and it was just really sweet.’ ” Ben added that while it was sweltering outside, “Lady Gaga’s concert was definitely hotter than it is out here!” New York native Alex loved the show’s theme. “Everything was about New York today. Shocking moment of the night was when she [lay down] up on the piano and started playing the piano with her boot.” Frankie said he was spellbound by some of Gaga’s infamous theatrics. “It was a nice moment to see she got very emotional,” he said. “It was almost like she climbed up on the piano and on the screen they focused on her shoe, and then she started slamming her shoe on her piano, and it looked like she was going crazy on the piano for theatrics, and then she actually started playing. It was really, really cool!” Other little monsters left the show taking Gaga’s message to heart: If you dream big, sometimes your dreams do come true. “She mentioned that when she was our age, she was back in the last row, which is where we were trying to get past security and get closer to the front, and we did it,” Maggie admitted. “We dodged security, and basically, she gave us the inspiration that one day we can be up there, or our dreams can come true also. So, it was really inspirational.” Have you been to a Lady Gaga show? Share your favorite moments in the comments. Lindsay Lohan’s Parents React To Her Sentencing

‘Any kind of jail is harsh, especially for a young lady like Lindsay,’ Michael Lohan says on ‘Larry King.’ By Jocelyn Vena Lindsay Lohan in court on Tuesday Photo: MTV News Hours after Lindsay Lohan was sentenced to 90 days in jail to be followed by 90 days in rehab for violating probation, her estranged father, Michael Lohan, sat down with Larry King to discuss his daughter’s punishment. In the interview, Lohan noted that he was feeling “dismay, but at the same time a little satisfaction that she’s going to rehab. But the last thing in the world I wanted was for my daughter to go to jail. … Any kind of jail is harsh especially for a young lady like Lindsay that doesn’t need jail. I’ve been there myself and I know that jail didn’t do anything for me with my addictions. She needs help.” Michael said he believes that his daughter is addicted to prescription medications and that in lieu of the jail time he would prefer it if Lindsay spent “six months or longer in an inpatient treatment facility.” At the end of the day, even with the sentence, Lohan thinks that his daughter can eventually recover from her demons. “I know she can do it. I don’t think she can, I know she can,” he said on the show. “She’s an intelligent girl. She’s got drive; when she puts her mind to something she can do anything in the world.” Meanwhile, Lohan’s mom, Dina, spoke about her daughter’s sentencing to Popeater.com . “This is so not fair to do this to my child,” she told the site. Justin Bieber Is Not Going To North Korea, Rep Confirms

Bieber-related Internet hoaxes and attacks abound in recent weeks. By James Montgomery Justin Bieber Photo: George Pimentel/ WireImage At this point, Justin Bieber ‘s camp is sort of used to the Internet hoaxes — he’s had syphilis, gotten pregnant and even died a few times, if you can believe what you read — but over the past week, there’s been one hoax that just won’t go away: His (supposed) concert stop in North Korea. It all started with a supposed contest organized by a site called Faxo.com that allowed fans to vote on which country he should visit on an upcoming leg of his My World Tour, with absolutely no restrictions. That proved advantageous for the jokesters over at the notorious 4chan message board, who encouraged folks to vote for North Korea — the communist nation where citizens are denied Internet access and the media is strictly controlled by the government. Within days, North Korea climbed the charts, and by Wednesday, when the contest ended, it had leapfrogged Israel to claim the top spot. Of course, the Internet went insane once again, and some media outlets even reported that the contest was real. But while the idea of Bieber performing for Kim Jong-il is certainly hilarious, it’s not actually true. Sure, North Korea may have won the Faxo contest, but the contest was in no way sanctioned by Bieber or anyone in his camp, according to a statement e-mailed on Wednesday (July 7) to MTV News. “It was a spoof site,” a spokesperson for Bieber wrote. “This is not a legitimate contest.” So, sadly, the Justin Bieber North Korea concert will not come to fruition anytime soon, something the Internet attributed to something other than the contest’s illegitimacy. Early Wednesday morning, more pranksters had made the most-searched term on Google Trends “Justin Bieber Hates Korea.” Meanwhile, Bieber fans were subjected to yet another Internet attack. According to the BBC , hackers wrote code into the comments sections of Bieber videos on YouTube, flashing unsuspecting fans with news of the singer’s death and/or redirecting them to adult websites. Google issued a statement saying the company “took swift action to fix a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability” on the video site. None of this seems to have slowed Bieber’s own Internet activity, however, as the avid Twitterer continues to rally his followers around his latest singles and even deigns to respond to a rumor or two. Back in June, for instance, he wrote, “One … I’m not dead. I had to check on this one … but it turns out I’m alive.” Related Videos Frame By Frame: Sean Kingston & Justin Bieber’s ‘Eenie Meenie’ MTV News Extended Play: Justin Bieber Related Photos Justin Bieber And His Many Lady Friends Related Artists Justin Bieber

LeBron James Launches Twitter Feed

Basketball star accumulates 200,000 followers in 24 hours as he decides which NBA team to sign with next. By Kyle Anderson LeBron James Photo: Elsa/Getty Images For the past week, the country has been eagerly anticipating the answer to a pressing question. No, not “How will the Gulf of Mexico recover from this oil spill?” Rather, it is “Where will LeBron James play basketball next?” The dynamic and multitalented James, who is friends with Jay-Z and who last year starred in a documentary about his high school hoops team , became a free agent on July 1 and has been fielding offers from a number of NBA teams for his services. While he searches for a new contract (and possibly a new city), he recently acquired something he has never had before: his own verified Twitter account. James made his Twitter debut on Tuesday, identifying himself as the “King of Akron” in his bio description. “Hello World, the Real King James is in the Building ‘Finally,’ ” he wrote in his first (and so far only) tweet. “My Brother @oneandonlycp3 gas’d me up to jump on board so I’m here. Haaaa.” Clearly there was demand for James’ thoughts on the service, as he has accumulated nearly 216,000 followers in less than 24 hours. James was referring to fellow basketball star (and free agent) Chris Paul, who has been a star for the New Orleans Hornets and is also in search of a new home. Rumors have swirled that Paul and James would be signed together as a package deal, though they are both playing their decisions close to the vest. “Couldn’t convince him to tell me which team he’s goin to but convinced him to join twitter lol…my brother from another mother,” Paul tweeted . On Tuesday night, James said he would announce his decision during a special ESPN telecast on Thursday at 9 p.m. ET. Oddsmakers seem to believe he is headed to the Chicago Bulls, but the Cleveland Cavaliers (his team for the past six seasons), Miami Heat, New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers have all made pitches to him. Lindsay Lohan’s Profane Nail Art Sends Mixed Message In Court

Photos show the actress had the words ‘F— U’ written on the nail of her middle finger. By Gil Kaufman Lindsay Lohan at her court hearing on July 6 Photo: David McNew/ Getty Images As Lindsay Lohan tearfully, humbly pleaded with Judge Marsha Revel in a Beverly Hills, California, courtroom on Tuesday, the actress was subtly sending a somewhat different message with her nail. Lohan, 24, who was sentenced to 90 days in jail to be followed by 90 days in rehab for violating her probation from a 2007 DUI case by missing weekly alcohol-education classes . Close-ups of photos taken by The Associated Press revealed that Lohan had the message “F— U” written on the airbrushed nail of the middle finger on her left hand, which she frequently pressed to her lips and cheek during Tuesday’s hearing. At press time, it was unclear if Lohan entered the courtroom with the profane nail art or if she scribbled it on during the course of the nearly day-long hearing. It was also unclear for whom the message was intended. Lohan’s lawyer could not be reached for comment. “As far as I knew, I was in compliance with my programs. … I wasn’t trying to get special treatment,” said Lohan, whose crying jag instantly became a ubiquitous image on the Internet within minutes of the sentencing. “I have to provide for myself. I have to work. Having said that, I did everything to balance my jobs and showing up. … I’m not taking this as a joke; it’s my life and career. … I take responsibility for my actions. I’ve tried to do the best I can. It’s been such a long haul. I don’t want you to think I don’t respect you and your terms.” A legal analyst for the “Today” show, Dan Abrams, said on Wednesday morning that the sentence handed down was a “very stiff” one that was most likely meant to send a message to Lohan, as well as to the rest of the community looking on. “If she’d been anyone else, she’d be serving less time than anyone else in this case,” Abrams said. Lohan is scheduled to surrender on July 20 to begin serving her jail term and is likely to only serve a quarter of her sentence due to jail overcrowding, meaning she could be out after serving less than 25 days. Lady Gaga Plays Triumphant Homecoming Show At Madison Square Garden

‘Without New York, I would not exist,’ Gaga tells NYC fans Tuesday night. By Maura Johnston Lady Gaga performs in concert (file) Photo: Getty Images Before her hometown headlining debut at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night (July 6), Lady Gaga tweeted a photo of herself standing in front of the New York arena’s marquee. The photo had no commentary except for the tag “#madisonsquaregaga,” and indeed, it seemed like she was on the verge of taking over the arena in the hours before she took the stage. Some fans were dressed as characters from her videos — the Diet Coke curlers from the “Telephone” clip were particularly popular — while others took her glammed-up aesthetic to the hilt, with glitter, elaborate eye makeup and giant hair bows ruling the night. The fashion statements were all the more impressive given the weather in New York, where temperatures soared past the 100-degree mark on Tuesday. Gaga’s Tuesday night concert was the first of three Monster Ball shows taking place this week in New York, which serves as the setting for the elaborately staged concert. During the course of her show, Gaga and her dancers veered all over the city, from the Lower East Side to the F train to Central Park. But it was obvious that Gaga was very aware that the fantasy world she’d created had been set up inside the arena where, as the young Stefani Germanotta, she took in quite a few performances by music’s biggest stars. “My name is Lady Gaga and I used to sit right over there, way far in the back and way up top,” she said at one point during the evening. She then reeled off a list of artists she’d seen during her past visits to the Garden — Madonna, Cher, the Rolling Stones, Elton John, Kiss. “I used to stare at this side of the room, and I used to think, ‘I’m gonna be up there,’ ” she continued. “Every second you watch me on this stage,” she told the crowd, “you remember, I was sitting where you are.” Later in the show, she dedicated a wrenching performance of “Speechless” to her father, who was in the audience. She recalled the days of him helping her carry a piano down four flights of stairs so she could bring it to shows in the early part of her career and said, while pitched over the piano, “Of all the drunk men in my life, Dad, you’re my favorite.” “Without New York, I would not exist,” Gaga then declared. “But I also would not exist without my friends,” she added, and after a lengthy rundown of the challenges she’d faced with the help of her pals she dedicated her new song “You and I” to them. Her performance of the rock-tinged track was full of passion, stretching into a near-epic where she pounded away on the piano. The obvious nods to New York sprinkled into the evening — both within the show and timed to tonight’s setting — only seemed to energize the crowd, and Gaga fed off the adulation. By the time the night came to a close, there was a triumphant feeling in the air. “We did it, little monsters,” she told the crowd after the night’s closing number, “Bad Romance.” “We made it to the Monster Ball! We made it to Madison Square Garden. “Thank you for making my dream come true,” she continued. “I love you so much.” What do you think of the Monster Ball Tour? Leave your reactions in the comments!
