Eminem’s Recovery Dominates Billboard 200

Miley Cyrus’ Can’t Be Tamed debuts at #3, behind Drake’s Thank Me Later. By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images Guess who’s back? Eminem is notching his sixth #1 album in a row with Recovery , which sold more than 741,000 copies last week. Those numbers dwarfed the figures for the all of the rest of the top 10 on next week’s Billboard 200 albums chart, as Slim Shady put up the best first-week numbers since 2008, far surpassing year’s other big debuts (Drake, Lady Antebellum, Sade). Proving once again that despite the album’s early leak, his fans will still come out to support the Detroit MC, Em’s massive haul pushes last week’s #1, Drake ‘s Thank Me Later down to #2. Sales for Drake’s debut cratered by 65 percent to 157,000, but the melodic Young Money MC still passed the gold mark in just two weeks, according to numbers provided by Nielsen SoundScan. Miley Cyrus had a rough landing for her more mature Can’t Be Tamed, which comes in at #3 on sales of 102,000, less than half of what 2008’s Breakout did in its debut week (371,000). And though he still hasn’t reached his goal of snagging a #1 debut on the U.S. charts, metal legend Ozzy Osbourne ‘s latest solo effort, Scream, lands at #4 after moving 81,000 copies. It’s followed at #6 by the chart bow from the Roots ‘ long-in-the-works How I Got Over (51,000). In a relatively slow week on the charts, the rest of the top 10 include: Now 34 (#5, 55,000), Jack Johnson ‘s To the Sea (#7, 44,000), Justin Bieber ‘s My World 2.0 (#8, 43,000), Sarah McLachlan ‘s Laws of Illusion (#9, 38,000) and the soundtrack to “Eclipse” (#10, 38,000). Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers ‘ Mojo crashes down nine spots in week two to #11, as sales dipped by 74 percent to 33,000. After 24 weeks in the top 10, Lady Antebellum ‘s Need You Now has dropped to #12 on sales of 32,000. Meanwhile, Christina Aguilera ‘s Bionic continues to struggle, as the singer’s latest slips out of the top 10 after just three weeks, dropping to #22 as sales trailed off by 54 percent to 18,000. One of Aguilera’s collaborators, singer Sia , debuts at #37 with We Are Born (11,000), while soul mama Macy Gray is right behind at #38 with Sellout (11,000). As the world marked the one-year anniversary of his death, Michael Jackson ‘s Number Ones collection rockets up more than 50 spots to #42 on sales of just under 10,000 (one of several Jackson titles to march back up the charts this week). Eminem Notches Year’s Highest Debut With Recovery

According to preliminary numbers, album sold 741,000 copies in its first week. By Gil Kaufman Eminem’s Recovery Photo: Interscope The question this week wasn’t whether Eminem’s Recovery would debut at #1, but if it could reach the magical 1 million plateau, like two of his previous efforts. Well, Slim Shady fell a bit short, but his album is projected to be the year’s highest debut so far, selling 741,000 in its first week, according to preliminary figures from Nielsen SoundScan. Recovery beat the other two highest debuts of the year, from Sade and Lady Antebellum, by more than 200,000. It also easily beat the debut last year of his Relapse album , which hit #1 with 608,000. In fact, not only is Recovery, which leaked several weeks early, the year’s best debut, it had the biggest first week since AC/DC’s Black Ice bowed with 784,000 back in 2008. The strong debut also gave Em his sixth-consecutive #1 album. According to Billboard, Recovery also sold 225,000 downloads for the second-biggest digital week in history, behind Coldplay’s Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, which clocked 288,000 downloads when it was released in the summer of 2008. The rapper’s collaboration with Rihanna on “Love the Way You Lie” also made a lot of noise on Billboard ‘s Digital Songs chart, debuting at #1 with 338,000 downloads. Em, who admits on Recovery that he didn’t bring his “A” game the last time around, was helped by a strong first single in “Not Afraid,” plus a bit more exposure than he had for Relapse, when he was still just coming out of a troubling time dealing with his addiction to prescription medications. In addition to a turn on a recent episode of the E! clip show “The Soup,” in which he mistook host Joel McHale for a room-service waiter, the typically media-shy Marshall Mathers also popped up to do the top 10 on “Late Show With David Letterman” last week, where he performed with Jay-Z. The-Dream Is Mulling An Acting Career, ‘Make Up Bag’ Co-Star Says

Singer is working on a yet-untitled film project, says Jason Weaver, who co-stars in his upcoming ‘Make Up Bag’ video. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Matt Elias The-Dream and Jason Weaver Photo: MTV News The-Dream began hinting at possible retirement in the weeks leading up to the release this spring of Love King, the third project in his trilogy. But now that the collection is out, what exactly will the songwriter do? According to his “Make Up Bag” video co-star, Jason Weaver, the Atlanta singer is set to venture into acting. “The name of the project is tentatively titled “Road to Beaverton,” the actor told MTV News. “Pretty much what this video is, “Make Up Bag,” is the set up for the film.” The yet-unreleased “Make Up Bag” video is set against a 1930s motif and in the clip, The-Dream, Weaver, and T.I. all don pinstripe suits. Weaver and The-Dream didn’t offer any additional details, but the songwriter has said in the past that the grind of a solo career is too much for him to juggle with his duties as production partner to Christoper “Tricky” Stewart. The-Dream and Stewart have an enviable track record, collaborating on hits for Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige and Rihanna, among others. And while The-Dream hasn’t formally indicated Love King would be his last word as a solo artist, with a schedule that includes work on T.I.’s upcoming solo project, he’d be as busy tending to the rapper’s career as his own. In the past, he hasn’t seemed to mind the balancing act, going out of his way to praise his collaborators, including the Grand Hustle boss. “Tip is in a zone, man,” The-Dream told MTV News earlier this year. “He’s in one of those things. But me just being a lyric guy, what makes songs, I think, hits is when it comes from the heart and you really are saying something you mean. And you can feel it through the passion. Every record he played me, I was like, ‘Wow.’ I could just feel it.” Are you interested in seeing The-Dream take his talents to Hollywood? Talk about it in the comments! Related Artists The-Dream

What Will B.o.B’s Next Hit Be?

The star says ‘Don’t Let Me Fall’ is the song fans have ’embraced naturally’ By Mawuse Ziegbe with reporting by Kelly Marino B.o.B Photo: MTV News B.o.B. has had a breakout year with his chart-topping debut B.o.B. Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray , which has yielded the hits “Nothin’ On You” and the Hayley Williams-assisted “Airplanes” . The ATL star already has a couple of scorchers under his belt, but he’s still deciding between two other cuts from Bobby Ray for his next single. The MC said it’s a tossup between “Magic” and “Don’t Let Me Fall.” “I think ‘Magic’ is one where, in terms of the pop crowd, it’ll really be the hit, the record of choice,” B.o.B. told MTV News Sunday on the 2010 BET Awards’ red carpet, flanked by fellow Grand Hustle artist Ricco Barrino. “Magic” may have pop appeal and a feature from Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo, but the MC said that fans have already connected with “Don’t Let Me Fall.” “I think ‘Don’t Let Me Fall’ is the song that people just kinda embrace naturally. It doesn’t even have to be pushed or on the radio,” B.o.B said, adding that the crowd response for “Don’t Let Me Fall” parallels his earlier hits. “When I perform and do shows, people sing ‘Don’t Let Me Fall’ just as much as ‘Nothin’ On You’ and ‘Airplanes.’ ” The Atlanta MC didn’t have much time to think it over, since he then went on to wow the audience with his performance at the 2010 BET Awards . The rookie rapper teamed up with venerable hip-hop superstar, Eminem — who also makes an appearance on Bobby Ray — and recruited R&B songstress Keyshia Cole to step in for Hayley Williams for a performance of “Airplanes, Part II.” What do you think B.o.B’s next single should be? All Time Low Recall ‘Gagging’ During ‘Silent Library’ Stunt

Pop/punk band’s episode airs tonight at 5 p.m. ET on MTV. By Kyle Anderson, with reporting by Matt Harper All Time Low appear on “Silent Library” on June 29 Photo: MTV MTV’s “Silent Library” has made a name for itself by putting people (some famous, others not) in high-pressure (and usually extremely wacky) situations to test their ability to keep their reactions quiet. Such stunts include the “Milk Man” (which saw a male contestant try to survive an attack by a breast pump), “Not Happy Hour” (a game where five contestants have to consume a disgusting scorpion bowl in 30 seconds) and the surreal “Sad Bee” (wherein an old man wearing a bee costume shocks a contestant with a taser). Baltimore pop/punk band All Time Low are no strangers to wackiness, which is why they made for an excellent foil on the show; their episode airs Tuesday (June 29) at 5 p.m. ET on MTV. According to the band, the show is still up to its old tricks. “We all threw up, and it was awful,” All Time Low frontman Alex Gaskarth told MTV News during the penultimate stop on the Bamboozle Roadshow in Philadelphia. The group was subject to a stunt called “The Unexpected Mexican,” which saw bandmembers Gaskarth and Rian Dawson attempt to eat nachos with some rather eclectic toppings. “It was hot mustard, tartar sauce and wasabi paste,” Gaskarth said. “And it was just covered. None of those sauces are even good. I started gagging the first bite.” “I think they thought, ‘All Time Low is a bunch of jokesters, so we’ll give them everything that is sinful and wrong,’ ” Dawson said. “I threw up, and I was just watching them,” guitarist Jack Barakat added. All Time Low ended up on the show at least partially because of a Twitter campaign staged by their fans. “Apparently, our fans like to see us suffer,” Gaskarth joked. “But it was fun. We had a good time.” “Silent Library” is coming off its hottest season yet. The second batch of episodes featured stars like Justin Bieber, Jim Jones, Asher Roth, Aubrey O’Day and members of We the Kings and Forever the Sickest Kids. In addition to the members of All Time Low,the third season will feature guest appearances from members of bands like NeverShoutNever, Hey Monday, Honor Society and Anarbor. All Time Low’s episode of “Silent Library” airs Tuesday (June 29) at 5 p.m. ET on MTV. Related Videos Silent Library | Season 3 | Behind the Scenes with All Time Low Related Artists All Time Low

Big Boi Gets ‘Live And Down To Earth’ In ‘Follow Us’ Video

‘It’s like a college frat party down in Savannah,’ MC says of clip for second Sir Luscious Left Foot single. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Kelly Marino Big Boi Photo: MTV News Next week, Big Boi is set to release the video for “Follow Us,” featuring Vonnegutt, the Atlanta MC told MTV News on the red carpet of the 2010 BET Awards. He’s already shot the clip, which is scheduled to premiere the visuals in time for the release of his album, Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty, next Tuesday (July 6). “Left foot, right foot, stepping over biters,” he raps over the track’s syncopated drums. “The game seems haunted/ ‘Cause there’s so many ghost writers.” “It’s just live and down to earth,” Big Boi said of the “Follow Us” video. “It’s like a college frat party down in Savannah, Georgia. Just riding through the city, having fun.” The number follows Big Boi’s current single, the Scott Storch-produced “Shutterbugg.” Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty is the OutKast rapper’s first proper solo offering; he and rhyme partner Andre 3000 released solo projects bundled into an group album with Speakerboxx/ The Love Below. Now, Big Boi isn’t entirely on his own: He’s got the help of T.I., B.o.B and Jamie Foxx on the LP. Andre 3000 was slated to have a prominent role on the project, particularly on the songs “Royal Flush” and “Lookin’ for Ya,” but OutKast’s label, Jive, blocked Dre from appearing on the Def Jam release. “Jive Records is trying to block 3 Stacks from being on the album. Boi Stop!!!!” Big Boi tweeted earlier this month. Big Boi spoke to MTV News in April about “Lookin’ for Ya,” which was produced by Boi-1da. “It’s me and Stacks, two verses apiece, back-to-back lyrical manslaughter,” Big Boi said of the collaboration. “Who’s better than the ‘Kast? Nobody.” Are you looking forward to more of Big Boi’s solo work? Would you rather OutKast got to work on new music together? Sound off in the comments. Related Artists Big Boi

Britney Spears’ Next Album Will Be ‘Hard-Hitting,’ Danja Says

The producer reveals he’s in pre-production on pop star’s LP; Darkchild also teases Gaga-esque ‘hits’ for Spears, in new online video. By James Dinh Britney Spears Photo: Jeremy Cowart/ WireImage Britney Spears has kept quiet since wrapping up her Circus Tour, a 97-date extravaganza that took her around the world last year. But according to some of the producers helping to prep her next album, it won’t be long before we hear from the pop star again. In fact, a musical storm is brewing, and producer/songwriter Danja told Rap-Up TV of what to expect from Spears’ next project. “We’re getting things together,” Danja revealed. The pair have collaborated on Spears’ last two LPs, and Danja is the man responsible for giving Brit her comeback single “Gimme More.” “I’ve actually been doing tracks that I love, and I can’t wait to go into full production mode, but more or so [we’re in] pre-production than anything,” he said. Asked what direction the pop princess’ material will take, the producer said it was hard to tell; things tended to be unpredictable in the studio. “We can start one way and end up a totally different way, I really don’t know,” Danja told Rap-Up TV. “I’m definitely gonna do my part and try to make it hard-hitting, uptempo, high-energy. That’s what I think we need and that’s what I’m gonna shoot for.” While Danja has worked with the likes of Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado, the producer revealed that the chemistry between him and Spears is “so easy and fun.” “It’s one of the easiest — probably the easiest — sessions I’ve had in my career, so I’m looking forward to getting back in,” he gushed. And after all the commotion that erupted after Spears’ demo version of Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” leaked online, it’s maybe not surprising that Darkchild is also onboard for the singer’s next album. Kris Allen Aims For ‘Street Cred’ On Tour With Radiohead Cover

After ‘Paranoid Android,’ the ‘American Idol’ alum is working on a cover of MGMT’s ‘Electric Feel.’ By Jim Cantiello Kris Allen Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images While you should never judge a book by its cover, “American Idol” season-eight champ Kris Allen hopes concertgoers judge him for his cover. More specifically, his out-of-left-field take on Radiohead’s epic prog-rocky anthem “Paranoid Android,” which he’s currently performing on his first headlining tour. “It’s our street-cred song,” Allen told MTV News backstage at Yankee Stadium, where he was about to play the CBS Radio Expo. “I’ve always loved the song, and I’ve always loved playing it, and so we worked it out as a band, because we thought it would be cool.” Street cred is a tricky thing when you’re a dude from a show that forces contestants to sing songs from the Barry Manilow songbook. But Kris and his band are eager to prove to audiences that their music tastes reach wider than the mainstream tunes fans might expect from an artist with an “Idol” past. And, in some cases, the Radiohead cover — now a fan favorite — expands the musical horizons of Allen’s “Idol” followers. “Some people come up to me after the show, they didn’t even know the song, and they were like, ‘That was incredible!’ My brother, he has no idea who Radiohead is, and he thought it was awesome,” Allen said. Not all audiences are ready, however, to hear the good-natured Southern boy sing lyrics like “When I am king, you will be first against the wall.” “We won’t play it every night. We’ll play it every once in a while,” the Arkansas native said. “I think we played it in Shreveport [Louisiana], and people were just like, ‘What is this? This guy’s creepy!’ And then we move on to the next song,” Allen laughed. This isn’t the first time Kris has taken a risk with his set list. In addition to rocking songs from his self-titled debut album, including the hit “Live Like We’re Dying,” Kris and the band have performed straight-faced, sincere mash-ups of Kanye West’s “Heartless” and Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise,” as well as a “Falling Slowly”/ “With or Without You” interpolation that caught the eye of original artist the Swell Season. (Glen Hansard even performed Kris’ U2-ified arrangement on their last tour). Kris Allen has his fingers crossed for a similar shout-out from Radiohead. “What if Thom Yorke sees this?” the singer said wide-eyed. “And what if he’s like, ‘This is great’? That would be incredible!” While Kris and his band daydream about props from the Radiohead frontman, they’re busy working on another cred-grabbing cover to add to their set. “We’ve been trying to work up ‘Electric Feel’ for a while, the MGMT song, which would be pretty cool.” Kris Allen is on tour with his band through September, performing both headlining shows as well as opening for Barenaked Ladies, Keith Urban and Maroon 5.
