Eminem Talks Recovery, ‘Hottest MCs’

‘I broke free from the chains of addiction and it was just like ‘Ahh, I’m happy again. I’m not a prisoner,’ ‘ Em says. By MTV News staff Eminem Photo: Interscope As his critically praised new album looks set to have the biggest first-week sales of 2010, Eminem talked with Vibe.com about Recovery, (both the album and his own recovery from drug addiction ), his placement in MTV News’ “Hottest MCs in the Game” rollout last year and his relationship with hip-hop. Asked about a line in the song “25 to Life” where he talks about taking control of his relationship with hip-hop, Em said, “What the whole song is saying is that I have a strange relationship with hip-hop because I love it so much. I go through this thing in my head a lot, which I’m sure every rapper does, where you give your life to this thing. You literally give everything that you got. I come to work some days wearing the same thing two days in a row — baggy sweats — just dedicating my life to this. And there are times that I feel like I get the respect that I deserve and there are times where I feel like I don’t.” He was then asked about being left out of the top 10 of last year’s “Hottest MCs in the Game.” “That ‘Hottest MC’ list that I was left off, it was one of those things that I was glad that I am at where I’m at. I’m glad I’m in this place now, because a few years ago I would’ve let it bother me more than it did. I took it not as a slap in the face but more so like, ‘Maybe I’m not on that list for a reason. Maybe I’m not doing the things that I need to be doing. Maybe I need to look at myself and step it up.’ I don’t know what I would have thought being in the mind state that I was in. I just felt like maybe I need to do better.” The conversation then turned to his recovery from drug addiction and how the experience has changed him. “I handle things a lot differently now,” he said. “I’m proud to be able to say that I’m an addict without any shame in it. I’m proud that I’m able to admit that I have a problem with a certain thing and I have to leave it alone and accept it. I’m proud that I’m strong enough to be able to walk away form those things.” Em also spoke about his decision not to release a second volume of Relapse, as he’d planned, and instead focus on Recovery. “On a record like the new record, when I mention the third verse of ‘Talking to Myself,’ I try to sum up the last two records in a nutshell,” he said. “Mr. Porter, who produced ‘On Fire,’ had this analogy of Encore and Relapse that stuck with me: ‘ Encore I was on drugs, Relapse I was flushing them out.’ His view on Relapse was that I was flushing the drugs out my system and looking back at it, I probably was. My mind was coming back, my writing skills were coming back, so I was able to write again because I had writer’s block from the pills. I was backed up. I was writing so much and so quickly that I didn’t have a chance to stop and say, Are these good songs? Are they great songs? I was just going. I was like, ‘I got so much material for three albums, but let’s narrow it down to two. Let’s put out Relapse 2 months later. That was the original plan. “There are so many drug references on the last album; that’s just where my head was at,” he continued. “I came to life again and everything was like new. When they say ‘in recovery’ or ‘in rehab’, it’s like being born again when you get clean and sober. You start appreciating sh– that you never thought you would appreciate, like, ‘Wow, look at those trees. Look at nature.’ Before, it didn’t matter. I just started appreciating things more. I got happy when I got sober, broke free from the chains — not to sound corny. I broke free from the chains of addiction and it was just like ‘Ahh, I’m happy again. I’m not a prisoner.’ I was just happy to be back.” Related Videos The Hottest MCs In The Game 2009 Related Artists Eminem

Chris Brown’s BET Awards MJ Tribute Was ‘Spectacular,’ Jermaine Jackson Says

‘He deserves to perform, because it’s healing for him,’ Michael Jackson’s brother tells ‘Extra.’ By Gil Kaufman Chris Brown performs during the 2010 BET Awards on Sunday Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images Chris Brown wasn’t the only one getting misty-eyed at Sunday night’s BET Awards during his tribute to Michael Jackson . The King of Pop’s older brother, Jermaine, told “Extra” that he was also overcome with emotion during the dance routine, in which Brown paid homage to some of MJ’s most famous moves and then attempted to sing “Man in the Mirror” before being overcome with emotion and weeping onstage. “To see [Chris’] performance, it was very emotional for me, because it was an acceptance from his fans from what has happened to him and also paying tribute to my brother,” Jermaine said. “It was just a spectacular moment.” Fans and critics have been split on the performance, which some saw as the bursting of an emotional dam for the singer, making his first major public appearance since he pleaded guilty to felony assault in his assault of former girlfriend Rihanna last June. Others speculated that Brown may have manufactured the tears to gain sympathy from fans who abandoned him in the wake of the Rihanna attack. Jermaine Jackson said he thought Brown — a longtime devotee of Michael’s and, at one point, considered a modern heir to the R&B throne — had every right to pay homage to his brother. “He deserves to perform, because it’s healing for him,” Jermaine said. “How can he learn from his mistakes if you don’t give him a chance? He needs that. I love Rihanna, and I’m not supporting what he did, but I support him [as a singer] 100 percent. … I’m just very emotional just knowing what has happened. Chris Brown is a human being, and we all make mistakes. We can’t condemn him for what has happened. We hope he has learned from it.” Brown hasn’t made any public statements since the BET performance, but on Monday, he did tweet , “My fans are my world,” a follow-up to a message earlier in the day when he wrote, “I Love you … (ever single one of #teambreezy).” What did you think of Chris Brown’s emotional performance? Adam Lambert Talks Importance Of Rhinestones, Pre-Show ‘Rituals’

‘We get in front of the mirror and kind of play every night,’ Lambert tells MTV News of makeup artist Sutan on Glam Nation Tour. By Jim Cantiello Adam Lambert Photo: MTV News Believe it or not, Adam Lambert does not wake up with rhinestones affixed to his cheekbones. The pop star, currently headlining his in-demand Glam Nation Tour , gets creative with his glittery stage makeup moments before showtime. “We get in front of the mirror and kind of play every night,” Lambert told MTV News backstage at a recent sold-out New York City tour stop. “We just create and it’s fun. So sometimes there’s like rhinestones stuck all over [the] side of my head. Sometimes we give a little Eastern bindi action. Sometimes there [are] no stones whatsoever,” he added. The “we” Lambert was referring to includes makeup guru Sutan, who has long been among Lambert’s circle of friends. But fans may know the flamboyant makeup artist from his stint on “America’s Next Top Model.” “He’s so funny and has such a great energy, and I really like his work,” Lambert gushed. Rhinestones and face glue, however, aren’t the only tools Adam needs to prep for a show. In order to maintain his powerhouse, octave-jumping voice, Lambert has finally zeroed in on a secret weapon: aerobics. “I never used to be one to do any sort of ritual before I performed and just recently, at the start of this tour, I decided to start coming up with a routine. And it’s really helped me,” the singer said. “I exercise; I do like a cardio thing. If I’m in a hotel with a treadmill I either run for 20 minutes or I get on a stationary bike,” Lambert continued. “It makes you feel good, it gets the endorphins going. It also kind of helps warm up the voice. And then I do a [proper] vocal warm-up.” As fun as the face painting is, the “Idol” star knows that ultimately, it’s all about delivering the music. “Those two things — just a little exercise and that vocal warm-up — keep me at my best. With fans “waiting out on the street , people are so dedicated, they deserve the best,” Lambert said. His Glam Nation Tour continues through September , before heading overseas later this fall. Eminem Has ‘Beef’ With Adrian Grenier On ‘Entourage’ Season Finale

Em will celebrate the success of his real-life album Recovery on the show; Christina Aguilera will also perform. By Mawuse Ziegbe Eminem Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Eminem will help close out the seventh season of HBO’s “Entourage” with a guest spot on the cable hit’s finale. According to Entertainment Weekly, the rapper will appear as himself on the show, celebrating the success of his real-life album, Recovery, with a blow-out bash. Show creator Doug Ellin told EW that some drama will go down between Em and Adrian Grenier’s character. “He has a little conflict — a little beef — with Vince,” said Ellin. RapRadar.com also posted a photo of Em shooting the scene, which features the hip-hop star in the foreground as a gigantic First Aid sign — which is part of the artwork for Recovery — looms above a crowd of actors and crew members. Even though Recovery dropped just last week, Ellin is confident that the album will be a smash. Ellin told EW that the Eminem scene is set “at a platinum record party for his album, which by the time this airs [on September 12] will be platinum, I’m sure.” Em’s “Entourage” guest spot also probably means that everything is cool between the hip-hop star and the show’s executive producer Mark Wahlberg, with whom Mathers shared a famously tense appearance with the beefy rapper-turned-actor on MTV’s “TRL” in 1999. Christina Aguilera will also appear on the “Entourage” finale as a client of Ari Gold. “She’s doing Ari a favor and performing at a party for him,” Ellin said. The season seven send-off is shaping up to be a star-packed episode as John Cleese, Minka Kelly, and professional athletes like Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees and more are set to appear. Jennifer Hudson Calls Murders Of Her Family ‘Surreal’

‘It’s all a blur. It was surreal,’ she says in episode of VH1’s ‘Behind the Music.’ By Jocelyn Vena Jennifer Hudson Photo: Alexandra Wyman/WireImage On Monday night’s episode of “Behind the Music,” Jennifer Hudson openly discussed the tragic October 2008 murders of her mother, brother and nephew for the first time, describing that time as “surreal.” “It’s all a blur. It was surreal,” she said in the episode. “It was like I was outside of myself. For almost two weeks straight … [I was] inside one room with just family and friends coming in and out. I prayed when I’d get up in the morning and prayed before I laid down at night.” Not long after Hudson got engaged to David Otunga and released her debut album, the bodies of Hudson’s mother, Darnell Hudson Donerson, 57, and older brother, Jason, 29, were discovered inside the home Hudson grew up in on Chicago’s South Side. Julian King, Hudson’s 7-year-old nephew, was reported missing soon after. His body was later discovered in an SUV on Chicago’s West Side. All three victims died from multiple gunshot wounds. William Balfour , the estranged husband of Hudson’s sister Julia, was charged with the murders. Hudson remained relatively low-profile after the murders until the 2009 Grammys, where she performed “You Pulled Me Through.” “I was definitely thinking of my family when I was singing that song,” she said. “I could hear my brother in my head, like, ‘Jennifer, you need to kill this, you need to get up and do it.’ I knew he would be disappointed if I didn’t do it justice.” Since that time in her life she said, “I feel like I’ve lived about three or four different lives,” adding that her son, David Jr. , “reminds me of my nephew.” “In so many ways I channel [my mother] because she was such a great mom.” She said her son “makes me feel like the most special person on earth. I want him to get the same love and the same upbringing my mother gave us.” Related Artists Jennifer Hudson

Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Oprah Top Forbes 2010 Celebrity Power List

James Cameron, Sandra Bullock, Britney and Madonna also named most powerful celebs of 2010. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga Photo: Noel Vasquez/ Getty Images Lady Gaga has won a lot of accolades during the past year and met some pretty impressive dignitaries , but crashing the Forbes magazine annual World’s Most Powerful Celebrities list puts her in some truly rarified company. The singer, who launched her latest iteration of her never-ending Monster Ball Tour in Montreal on Monday night, debuts on the list this year at #4. She landed there thanks to high marks for her Web visibility (#1 on the list) and a $62 million haul between June 2009 and June 2010, $31 million of which came from touring (after a gross of $95 million), with much of the rest courtesy of deals with Virgin Mobile, Polaroid, Monster Cable and MAC. Gaga joins a top 10 that is dominated by women, including the once-again #1, Oprah Winfrey, who retook her top rank thanks to $315 million in earnings after ceding it last year to Angelina Jolie (now #18). The list ranks celebs based on earnings over the previous 12 months, as well as visibility in print, TV, radio, online and social media. Beyonc

3OH!3 Talk ‘Rad’ New Album, Streets Of Gold

‘We were inspired by gold,’ Nathaniel Motte jokes to MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias 3OH!3 Photo: MTV News For 3OH!3’s album Streets of Gold, out Tuesday (June 29), they decided to seek inspiration from things they know a lot about — like partying. Would you expect anything else from the “Don’t Trust Me” singers? ” Want did really well and kept doing better, so we didn’t really have time [to make a follow-up],” Nathaniel Motte told MTV News of their breakthrough album. “We finally carved out some time to make this album, which is rad. We were inspired by gold.” The duo also wrote music about their new rock-star lifestyle. “I think there’s a few completely different things on the album,” Sean Foreman said. “Some of it’s really fun and just about kind of our life on the road and parties. There’s some heavier songs [too].” But don’t think the party-song dudes have left behind the sounds that made them household names. If you hear any new vibes on the album, they say it’s just because they have grown as musicians. “While we were touring, we managed to work in the studio, and I think we’ve learned so much as songwriters and as producers making music and making tracks,” Motte said, adding that this album is a “more developed [and] more defined album. It’s inspired by a lot of stuff.” Some of that stuff includes first love, as evidenced on their Ke$ha-fied single “First Kiss,” and, well, house parties. “I think we stretched. As much diversity as there was on the last album, we just pulled that and stretched it further,” Foreman said. “You get stuff on either end of the spectrum — like ‘House Party’ is crazy and has the craziest production, and it’s just a fun anthem that you’d want to sing with all your friends. And then there’s stuff on the other end of it, where it might be a little bit more singing and stuff like that.” Are you looking forward to 3OH!3’s latest album? Let us know in the comments!

Max B Recalls Making A Wave Called Yes Tape While On Trial

‘For the music to come out that good while I was in trial, that was surprising to me,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Max B Photo: Amalgam Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Mixtape : A Wave Called Yes Headliners : Max B and Young Riot Key Cameos : “Living the Life” (featuring Curren$y) Essential Info : Max B said his wave just doesn’t dry up. While the New York MC awaits his appeal of a decades-long prison sentence for manslaughter and various other charges, his music is still being heard. Amalgam Digital recently released a mixtape by the spitter and the upstart Young Riot. “That’s me and my young god, Young Riot,” Max said on the phone from the New Jersey State Penitentiary. “He’s holding it down while I’m up in the spot. We got a few treats on there. I remember the night we did them. [The executives at Amalgam] drove me out to Boston, 2 in the morning. I went out there and drank a 60 of Hennessey and knocked out the whole tape. Knocked the tape out in one night. That’s what professionals do. This is when I was going to trial. They came and got me on a Friday or Saturday, I had to be back on Sunday, Monday morning to go back to court. It was a real busy week. I was really busy on trial. For the music to come out that good while I was on trial, that was surprising to me. That just let me know, no matter how long I’m gone from the game, I’m still a natural. I still can make quality work. I’mma still be Biggavelli.” Amalgam is going to let A Wave Called Yes rock for the summer then drop Max’s solo LP, Vigilante Season. B recently won a court case to be freed from his contract with Jim Jones, who discovered him. “We recorded 40 songs in three weeks,” Max said of his dealings with Amalgam last year. At the time, he was still contractually bound to Jones and did not know if the music would be allowed to be released. “Nonstop in the summertime. Vigilante was real special to me. It was like they giving me a shot. Even if it wasn’t coming out, they gave me the feel of just going to do the album. I was doing it my way.” As for when Max will be free to record again, he says it’s in God’s hands now. The rapper’s appeal could take between 18 months and three years to be resolved. If he loses that appeal, it could be an additional three years before he can appeal again. Max was sentenced to 75 years in prison in September 2009 for conspiracy, robbery, manslaughter and a myriad of other crimes. The jurors in the case felt there was ample evidence to convict him of the 2005 robbery of two men in a Fort Lee, New Jersey, hotel room. One of the men was shot and killed. Max wasn’t at the scene of the crime, but the prosecutors built their case with him as the mastermind. Max still denies being involved. His stepbrother Kelvin Leerdam was also convicted in the matter, and Max’s former girlfriend Gina Conway was involved as well but eventually testified against the men. Leerdam is serving time along with Max. “I always kinda had that problem with finding the right people,” Max said of the choices that led him to prison, right as he appeared to be on the verge of mainstream recognition. “People always say you gotta surround yourself with people who have your best interests in mind. I always found that hard to do, because when you’re in my situation, everybody acts like they got your best interests, but they don’t. We know who got your best interests — your mother, your father, your kid’s mother, whatever. Your immediate family. But you can’t have them on the road with you every day. You gotta be around your n—as. “You gotta pick them carefully,” he added. “I always had a problem with picking the right people I surround myself with. That’s always been my downfall, ever since I was a little kid. That’s something I gotta learn off experience. This is definitely an experience. The toughest sh– I been through in my life. You already know when I beat this, it’s gonna be beautiful. I just can’t wait. That’s the only thing keeping me going. Me saying [to myself], ‘Max, when you beat this, it’s gonna be a whole new lane out there for you.’ Me being able to attack this sh– right and make a living for my mother and my kids and be a good productive [citizen] in society. I’m a G. My moms raised me as a G. The only reason you don’t hear me stressing out, I know I’m coming home and I know I’m coming home soon.” Other Heat This Week

Max B Talks From Jail About Appealing 75-Year Sentence: ‘I’ll Be Home’

‘I’m not worried about the sentence, because I’m not doing that time,’ he tells MTV News. By Shaheem Reid Max B and French Montana Photo: MTV News As it stands right now, Max B is facing 75 years in prison after he was convicted of manslaughter, aggravated assault, robbery, kidnapping, possession of a weapon and conspiracy in 2009. But the New York MC said he’s staying as positive as possible and operating under the radar. When MTV News got him on the phone Monday (June 28) from New Jersey State Penitentiary in Trenton, he explained why he recently fired his trial lawyer, Gerald M. Saluti. “Anytime you lose trial, most of the times, on most occasions, people will fire their trial lawyer,” he said. “You would need to do something like that. For those who’s not familiar with legal terms, it’s called ineffective assistance of counsel. You would have to do that. That’s when your lawyer fails to do his obligated duties. I ain’t supposed to be in here in the first place. My charges were excessive. I was never at the scene of the crime. It’s very insufficient. Just off that alone, I’ll be back. It ain’t about me being convicted. It’s about: Can this conviction stand up in an appellate court? If they deny me on this one, then I’mma do an interview and tell the people, ‘Don’t wait up on me.’ It’s gonna be about four, five, six years later than that.” Max (born Charlie Wingate) was convicted of masterminding the robbery of David Taylor and Allan Plowden. The pair was set up by Max’s former girlfriend Gina Conway, who testified for the prosecution in the trial in exchange for a lighter sentence. Jurors felt that there was enough evidence to convict Max’s stepbrother Kelvin Leerdam of being the gunman and murderer of Taylor. Although Max wasn’t at the scene, jurors handed down a guilty verdict to him as well. Max was sentenced to 75 years in prison in September, but he said the term was reduced to 40. The prosecutor in the case had not returned MTV News’ calls for comment as of press time. “The sentence wasn’t really nothing,” Max said. “It was the ‘guilty’ that was more effective. The part when the jurors say ‘guilty.’ That hurts more than the sentence itself. At that time, I’m coming to court every day. I got the cameras on me. I got my girls waiting outside. I got French [Montana] and them n—as in the parking lot. My Beamer is parked in the lot. My jewelry is on. But now, when they say I’m guilty, I gotta take off my watch. I gotta take off my chain. I gotta pass it off. I pass off my car keys, my apartment keys, and I gotta walk to the back. I can’t walk out that gate. I gotta walk to the back and get locked up. That’s the part that hurt me the most. The sentence, by the time I got to that point, I didn’t hear none of that. I was already deaf to that sh–. My focus was already, ‘All right, we trying to get back.’ I’m not worried about the sentence, because I’m not doing that time. That’s not a number to me. They could’ve gave me a billion years, that sh– is not gonna stand up. That has to stand up in an appellate court. Now if [an appeals court] say, ‘Charlie Wingate, we found no error, you can’t come home’ — once I exhaust all my remedies, that’s different. But it’s still early. I’m on my direct appeal. I’ll be home.” It could be quite some time. Max said, realistically, he’ll have to do at least another year and a half in jail. “They should feel grateful. They should be thankful they got another chance,” Max said of his peers, such as Lil Wayne, Gucci Mane and T.I., who were all sentenced to around a year in prison. “Even though I got another chance, it might not come as easy and quick. My sh– might take up to three years for me to get outta here. It might be 18 months. But that’s just the worst-case scenario. The only person I felt really caught a rough deal was Remy [Ma] . Our situations was similar, as far as the lawyer and stuff go. [Remy] was working and not really focusing on the case at hand. Same thing with me. I was working, not focusing on the case at hand that mattered. And the end, when I had to go in that courtroom, I wasn’t prepared. I just let my lawyer do whatever. That’s a lesson. You got be on top of lawyers, you gotta do your own studying when you get situations like that. You can’t put your faith in his hands. They’re only human. Humans disappoint people. You gotta put your faith in God. You gotta work hard. It’s gonna be all right.” In the meantime, Max’s work will be heard. He recorded dozens of tracks before going to prison, and the music will be brought to the fans by the label Amalgam Digital. The company just put out the Mixtape A Wave Called Yes, which features Max and his rap accomplice Young Riot. Max’s next solo LP, Vigilante Season, is set to drop later this fall. Look for more of Max as he expounds on both projects Tuesday in Mixtape Daily. Related Artists Max B.
