Jay-Z, Eminem Visit ‘Late Show With David Letterman’

Appearance included the duo’s performance atop the Ed Sullivan Theater and a ‘Top 10 List’ read by Eminem. By Hillary Crosley Eminem and Jay-Z perform on the “Late Show with David Letterman” Photo: Matthew Simpson/ CBS After selling out their upcoming concert at New York’s Yankee Stadium before tickets even officially went on sale, Eminem and Jay-Z took the stage on the “Late Show With David Letterman” Friday night. The two veteran MCs are promoting their co-headlining hometown stadium performances in Detroit’s Comerica Park and Yankee Stadium this September. Eminem, sporting a black jacket, jeans and a white shirt, began by presenting the comedic “Late Show Top Ten” list segment featuring his “Pieces of Advice for the Kids.” “If I sign something for you and I see it on eBay, when you go home, I’m gonna be under your bed,” Eminem joked, struggling to keep a straight face. He continued with, “Always purchase music through authorized retailers that pay royalties to the artists,” and “Remember the magic words: ‘Please,’ ‘Thank You’ and ‘Step Off Bitch.’ ” Jay-Z followed Em by sitting down and chatting with Letterman about his and the Detroit MC’s working relationship. “We did a song on my album called Blueprint — the first one, I’ve got a lot of them — called ‘Renegade’ and it was good,” Jay said. “When you make good songs, you become friends.” Letterman then asked why the pair are just deciding to tour together now. “Em is a notorious non-tourer,” said Jay. Later, Hov almost argued the positives of NBA baller LeBron James leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers and joining the New Jersey Nets, which the rapper co-owns, before stopping himself. “There’s rules and guidelines that I want to be very certain to follow,” Jay told Letterman. “Everyone would love to have a LeBron James on their team. He’s a free agent come July 1. We’re gonna try after July.” Letterman disagreed with Jay’s interest in James, saying, “If LeBron James wants to be a guy, he will stay where he is and not cut the heart out of that city by leaving Cleveland.” At press time, the basketball player’s decision is still anyone’s guess. Then Jay and Eminem’s pre-taped performance rolled. The gents played three songs with a live band, opening with Eminem’s latest single “Not Afraid” before moving into Jay’s “On to the Next One” from 2009’s The Blueprint 3. As a grand finale, the pair performed “Renegade,” their first collaboration from Hov’s 2001 album The Blueprint. The mini-concert was originally filmed earlier this week atop the Ed Sullivan Theater . Eminem Honors Dr. Dre At ASCAP Awards Ceremony

‘He changed the face of music and he changed my life,’ Eminem says. By Kelly Marino Dr. Dre Photo: MTV News It’s been over a decade since his last solo album, but when Dr. Dre was honored with ASCAP’s Founders Award Friday night, it was a reminder to everyone that the doctor is still one of hip-hop’s biggest pioneers in the game today. The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers held it’s 23rd annual Rhythm and Soul Music Awards last night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, where some of music’s biggest names were recognized for their contributions to music. The biggest award of the night was handed to Dr. Dre for his achievements in the music industry and for inspiring and influencing his fellow music makers. The ASCAP association put together a presentation package that played across the big screens, highlighting some of Dre’s greatest quotes. One moment that had the audience cheering was Dre’s stab at critics, saying, “You can’t critique my sh– unless you have done half of the stuff I have accomplished.” Shortly after the piece ended, DJ Kid Capri took the stage to perform a set of songs chronicling Dr. Dre’s career that included early hits such as “Keep Their Heads Ringin’,” “Let Me Ride,” and “Gin and Juice” as well as more recent Dre productions such as “In Da Club,” “Family Affair,” and “Rich Girl.” Eminem made a rare, surprise appearance to present the award to Dr. Dre, whom he thanked for believing in him. “It would have been a lot easier for Dre to dismiss me like most people did,” Eminem stated. “But he didn’t. He stepped up to the challenge because he saw something in me. … He changed the face of music and he changed my life.” Dre then took the stage to accept the award, pausing during his speech as he fought back tears. “I’m living an incredible life,” he said. “Making a living doing what I love and having people love it. I can’t even explain what that feels like.” Dre went on to pay respects to his mother, who became pregnant with him at the age of 15. “She was always told by family, friends and neighbors or whatever, she was going to ruin her life and mine,” he said. He also thanked his wife, whom he described as his in-house A&R and playfully promised her he was going to give her “something real special for this tonight.” Closing out his speech, he thanked Jimmy Iovine, chairman of Interscope-Geffen-A&M Records, for being with him through his ups and downs, and last but certainly not least, his fans. Some of the other top awards handed out Friday were Songwriter of the Year, which Jimmy Jam presented to Ne-Yo and the hit-making duo C. “Tricky” Stewart and The-Dream, who tied with six chart-topping singles each. T.I. graced the stage to present fellow Atlantans Jermaine Dupri, Johnta Austin and Manuel Seal with Song of the Decade for “We Belong Together.” Matthew “Boi-1da” Samuels was honored for last year’s smash hit “Best I Ever Had,” which he wrote for Drake. “Blame It” by Jamie Foxx and featuring T-Pain earned writers Christopher Henderson, Brandon “Note” Melancon, The-Dream, C. “Tricky” Stewart, and Nate Walka the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Song of the Year. And Big Boi presented the ASCAP’s Vanguard Award to his friend and “high funktress” Janelle Monae, who accepted the award on behalf of her team the Wondaland Arts Society. Michael Jackson Fans Pay Tribute Outside Forest Lawn Cemetery

‘He was like my brother, a family member,’ one fan says. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Kelly Marino Forest Lawn Memorial Parks and Mortuaries in Glendale, California Photo: Getty Images Michael Jackson was laid to rest at Forest Lawn cemetery September 3. Nine months later, on the one-year anniversary of his death, fans gathered outside the Los Angeles cemetery Friday (June 25) to pay tribute to the fallen pop star and to share recollections of their favorite MJ moments from a career that spanned five decades. “My first memory, I was about 7 years old. This was the time when Bad came out, and I watched the video performance of it, and from that point, I was almost obsessed with him,” Eboni Butler told MTV News. “I even have him tattooed on my leg.” Tallora DiGirolami flew in from Adelaide, Australia, for the occasion and proudly displayed her national flag as she stood outside Forest Lawn. “I started this flag because I had so many friends and fans that couldn’t make it,” she said. “And we started getting to talking and I said, ‘Right, I’ve got a flag. Do you want to sign it? Do you want to be part of the memorial?’ ” The crowd was smaller than the ones that gathered in the days and weeks following Jackson’s death, but the sentiments of his fans were no less impassioned. “He means a lot to me,” Brian Lopez said. “He was like my brother, a family member. When I heard he died, I didn’t eat for weeks, I didn’t sleep for weeks, I didn’t go out for weeks. … It’s been a very sad loss for me.” Confronted with such a loss, his fans continued to recall memories of the King of Pop. “I saw Michael once in Memphis when he was married to Lisa Marie and they had the Elvis tribute,” Sheila Guerrero recalled. “I was crying so bad. He just stopped and came back and told me not to cry. That moment is priceless for me. I thank God for that moment.” Said Jonah Sevilla: “He loved the world, and he wanted it to be a better place because of all the bad things that were happening.” MTV will be remembering the life and music of Michael Jackson all weekend. Ne-Yo Expecting A Child

Singer Ne-Yo is expecting his first child. The baby is due in January. By Mawuse Ziegbe Ne-Yo Photo: Getty Images It appears that life is imitating art for singer/songwriter Ne-Yo. The R&B gentleman, who guested on 50 Cent’s 2009 hit “Baby by Me,” recently confirmed that he and his girlfriend, Monyetta Shaw, are expecting a child together. “I am 30, and I do have my first child on the way, and I’m very, very, very excited about that,” the hitmaker told Ebony magazine. The star also revealed that the new addition to his family is due in January. “It’s a New Year’s baby,” the singer told the magazine. The dad-to-be said he doesn’t know the baby’s gender yet because the little one was curled up in the womb during the first ultrasound, apparently making it hard to determine the sex. The star jokingly called out his unborn child, saying the baby was “stubborn.” However, the child appears to be taking after his or her mother, because, the singer added, “They didn’t get that one from me.” A rep for Ne-Yo also confirmed to MTV News that the star is expecting. While this is the singer’s first baby, this is not the star’s first brush with fatherhood. Ne-Yo’s former girlfriend reportedly gave birth to a child, Chimere, who the star once claimed as his own until he later learned he was not the boy’s biological father. Ne-Yo and his ex were reportedly in litigation over the matter. “I’m not allowed to talk about it, and I’m not allowed to see [Chimere],” Ne-Yo told USA Today in 2008. However, the star did seem very open to the idea of raising children and told the paper, “I’ve been thinking a lot about kids lately.” He even revealed that he wanted “a girl and a boy” and appeared ready to assume the role of a protective dad. “When the first guy comes to my door asking for my daughter, I might end up going to jail,” Ne-Yo said. “I just don’t know how I’ll handle that.” The impending pitter-patter of little feet is not the only thing the singer has on his plate; the star is also preparing to drop his latest album, Libra Scale. The star told Ebony, “I’m just in a really good place right now.” Share your well-wishes for the father-to-be in the comments! Related Artists Ne-Yo

Rick Ross Recruits T.I. For His ‘Masterpiece,’ ‘Maybach Music 3’

‘I feel like the verse he spits on this record may be one of his hardest verses,’ Ross says. By Jayson Rodriguez Rick Ross Rick Ross’ “Maybach Music” featuring Jay-Z was one of the standout tracks from his sophomore set, Trilla. The Miami rapper upped the star power on the sequel, recruiting Lil Wayne and Kanye West to join him on “Maybach Music 2.” Now, to complete the trilogy, Ross, is connecting with yet another heavyweight MC. “I had to do it real big with someone I never collaborated with before: Tip,” Ross told “Sucker Free” host DJ Envy of T.I. “We got a full orchestra, a live orchestra from the strings on down. It’s gonna be a masterpiece. It felt good to work with him. He just came home and got in the lab. He heard the music, he knows the legacy of part one and part two. And I feel like the verse he spits on this record may be one of his hardest verses. It’s that ‘Rubber Band Man’ flow.” In the past, Ross spoke out in a lighthearted manner about not being included on Tip’s “Swagga Like Us” record , which also included Jay-Z, Kanye West and Lil Wayne. “How could you forget about me?” he asked in his own freestyle over the M.I.A.-sampled track. “I feel like everything happens in time,” Ross told MTV News about the omission. “What T.I. had on his plate and what he had going on, I think that was the roster for him to put together. He had to make it as big as he could. It’s Paper Trail. He had to make it explosive. … The way I make music, I’m hater-free. So I don’t have egos. I’m a fan.” Ross is putting the finishing touches on his next album, Teflon Don, which is slated for release next month. What are you expecting from “Maybach Music 3”? Let us know in the comments! Michael Jackson’s Estate: What’s Coming Next?

Unreleased songs, Cirque du Soleil shows, a video game and much more are on the roster. By Gil Kaufman Michael Jackson Like Elvis, Bob Marley and Tupac Shakur, in death, Michael Jackson ‘s popularity has only grown stronger. The singer, who died at age 50 on June 25, 2009, while gearing up for a 50-concert comeback attempt, has generated nearly $1 billion in revenue for his cash-strapped estate since his death. And with a number of projects in the works , it’s likely that cash registers will keep ringing for years to come. Part of the reason the managers of Jackson’s estate moved so quickly to cut a number of lucrative deals in the months after the singer’s death is because of a $500 million mountain of debt they were facing. According to CNBC , they chipped away at that by launching a four-pronged plan that included generating cash to pay bills, developing long-term projects for regular cash flow, restructuring Jackson’s massive debt, and then working to restore the pop star’s image, complicated and tarnished by decades of bizarre behavior and two allegations of improper sexual contact with children. A spokesperson for the estate could not be reached for comment at press time to confirm future plans. One of the biggest deals was a $250 million pact with Sony Music Entertainment to release 10 new products encompassing CDs, DVDs and video games through 2017. The first of those albums, a still-untitled collection of unreleased songs, is due out at the end of this year. A repackaging of the singer’s 1979 solo debut, Off the Wall — which was reissued with bonus tracks in 2001 — is expected in 2011 with more outtakes and remixes. Jackson had been working for years on a follow-up to the poorly received 2001 album Invincible, recording tracks with Lenny Kravitz , Akon and Will.I.Am, among others, some of which have leaked in unfinished demo form. But it’s unknown if those songs will be packaged as the album Jackson was working on at the time of his death or if they will be sprinkled in among the future releases. His former label boss, Tommy Mottola, said soon after Jackson’s death that there were “dozens” of unreleased tracks that could see the light of day at some point. Reports surfaced this week that a collector discovered more than 200 unreleased Jackson 5 tracks in a warehouse. The “This Is It” documentary of rehearsals for the 50-date London comeback shows has already generated $300 million at the global box office and millions more on DVD. But concert promoter AEG Live said at the time of Jackson’s death, it had shot more than 100 hours of high-definition footage , meaning further repackaging of that material could be coming in the future. A video game from Ubisoft that will allow fans to re-create Jackson’s signature dance moves is due by the end of the year, and two new Cirque du Soleil shows employing Jackson’s music are slated to launch by 2012. The first show will be one of the Canadian troupe’s traditional traveling extravaganzas hitting the road in 2011, while the other will be anchored in Las Vegas and is expected to open in 2012. CNBC said the future of Jackson’s onetime adult playland, the 2,600-acre Neverland Ranch in Santa Barbara County, California, is still up in the air. The site is currently owned by Colony Capital, but it could be sold or moved to Las Vegas to create a tourist destination. Also up in the air is an auction of Jackson’s personal effects from Neverland, which he had arranged before his death as a way to raise money to pay off his debts. Plans for the 2009 auction were scrapped at the last minute after the thousands of items had already been put on display by Julien’s Auction House in Los Angeles. Busta Rhymes And Hype Williams To Collaborate On ‘Stop The Party’ Video

‘We’re gonna give the people what they want,’ MC says of clip for his new single. By Shaheem Reid Busta Rhymes Photo: MTV News If anyone has the right to declare that hip-hop videos can go back to being mini-epics, it’s Busta Rhymes . The New York veteran has watched fellow Dream Team members Rick Ross (the F. Gary Gray-directed “Super High”) and Diddy (the Hype Williams-helmed “Hello Good Morning”) released big-budget videos. Now, he is ready to make his own massive spectacle with the video for his new single, “Stop The Party.” “We just confirmed the treatment,” Bus said this past weekend in Atlanta. “It’s looking like the big homie Hype Williams is coming to the table [to direct]. We’re looking to shoot it around the BET Awards weekend. So, we’re probably gonna shoot it around the end of the month.” Hype and Busta have created some of the most innovative — and expensive — videos in hip-hop history, including the clips for “What’s It Gonna Be?!” and “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See.” The video for “Stop The Party,” which Busta said will be shot in both New York and Los Angeles, will be in keeping with their earlier collaborations. “We’re gonna give the people what they want. I promise you we got something so special. That song’s taking such a life of its own. It feels like that classic, feel-good, ‘Busta Rhymes wild out the party’ energy. It was only right we brought the homie Hype back and we do something that falls in line with the other great videos that we done in the past.” Bus told MTV that even though the recession is still lingering, MCs should splurge a little bit to keep the excitement flowing. “I think it’s feeling like we’re in that timeframe where it’s a necessity for us to roll out our presentation like we value it and care about it as well,” he rationalized. “I think we got so caught up in the changing of the climate when the recession kicked in … the business suffered somewhat.” He also noted that the hard times have resulted in people becoming more self-reliant. “We were forced to be a lot more concerned with the cost-effectiveness to benefit the people in the Fortune 500 establishments, the major label situations instead of prioritizing the music,” he said. “It’s definitely back to a time where dudes [are] starting to take their own bread if necessary, and invest in themselves and investing in the lifeline of the culture, the whole entertainment aspect. It’s beneficial for us to raise the stock value again.” Do you have a favorite Busta Rhymes video? Sound off in the comments below! Related Artists Busta Rhymes Hype Williams

Eminem Talks ‘Recovery,’ Touring Sober

‘Everything right now is a step at a time,’ the MC tells ‘Billboard.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Eminem on the cover of Billboard Photo: Billboard Eminem graces the cover of the new issue of Billboard . In the accompanying interview, the Detroit rapper discusses his struggle to return to rap dominance after a five-year hiatus to combat his drug dependency. Last year he returned with Relapse , an uneven collection that at its best lucidly detailed the depths of his battle and at its worst came across as hackneyed. On the recently released Recovery , Eminem decided to return to to his earlier work for inspiration. “I would go back and listen to songs off The Marshall Mathers LP , The Eminem Show , and some of Encore and ask, ‘Why don’t my music feel like this anymore?’ ” Em said. “”‘The Way I Am,’ ‘Criminal’ and ‘Toy Soldiers’ were songs that meant something. I wanted there to be a reason why I was making each song, instead of making it just to make it.” During the recording of his two albums prior to Recovery , Em said, he was either in full-blown addiction mode ( Encore ) or so freshly sober ( Relapse ) that he was unable to focus correctly on the material he made. “I was like, ‘S—, man, trees are beautiful again,’ ” Em said, describing the way he viewed the world during the making of Relapse . “‘What a nice day it is.’ I don’t think I was paying attention to what the average listener might like or not like.” Em said that he now wants to focus on earning the praise of his peers and die-hard fans with Recovery . Then, he’ll focus on hitting the road. He’s set to appear at music festivals both abroad and in the United States this summer, and he’s playing shows with Jay-Z in Detroit and New York in September. But the superstar MC is cautious about returning to a major touring schedule. “I’ll do these shows and see how I feel afterward, then set up a couple more,” he said. “I’ve had to relearn to do shows sober, because there were so many years that I didn’t know how to do it. Alcohol, Valium — all these things were crutches for me so that I didn’t have to feel anything when I went onstage. Everything right now is a step at a time, a day at a time.” Are you going to see Eminem perform soon? Sound off in the comments below! Related Photos The Evolution Of: Eminem Related Artists Eminem

Jerry Seinfeld: Lady Gaga Should Apologize To Met Fans

‘Then I’m willing to forget the whole thing,’ the comedian says, hinting end to feud might be close. By James Montgomery Jerry Seinfeld Photo: Ray Tamarra/ Getty Images Jerry Seinfeld took to the broadcast booth during Wednesday night’s game between his beloved New York Mets and the Detroit Tigers, delivering four-and-a-half innings of play-by-play and, in the process, continuing his rather amazing feud with Lady Gaga. Earlier this week, Seinfeld called Gaga “a jerk” , after she flipped the bird at photographers during a June 10 Mets home game. The comedian also took issue with team staff at Citi Field for ushering the pop star into his empty private box seats. “You give people the finger and you get upgraded? Is that the world we’re living in now?” Seinfeld admonished on New York’s WFAN radio. “This woman is a jerk. I hate her. I can’t believe they put her in my box, which I paid for.” During a lull in the action during Wednesday night’s game, Seinfeld addressed the incident again, joking that he might not exactly get Gaga’s antics, but as a Met fan, he felt insulted by her actions. “It’s fair to say that we’re all big fans of Lady Gaga — lame, out-of-it white guys in their mid-50s is her core audience,” he laughed. “But I’m very protective of my Met fans. I love my Met fans and I did not like … the finger. It was disrespectful. “She should make a nice apology to the Met fans,” Seinfeld continued. “Come on. We had her as a guest and … then I’m willing to forget the whole thing.” During his time in the booth, Seinfeld was asked by SNY analyst Keith Hernandez — the Mets great and onetime “Seinfeld” guest star has been friendly for year with the comic — about the condition of his box seats, following Gaga’s impromptu visit. “They didn’t trash it?” Hernandez asked. “No,” Seinfeld said. “We brought the bedbug dog in, Rusty, what’s his name? The beagle. And it’s all clean.” Seinfeld was, of course, referring to Roscoe, the star of a series of bizarrely compelling commercials for the Bell Environmental Services company that are routinely shown throughout New York and New Jersey. At another point in the broadcast, SNY’s Gary Cohen needled Seinfeld about Gaga getting his box seats, asking how she could’ve been upset at anyone with seats that good. “We don’t understand the kids today and the music business,” Seinfeld joked. “Maybe, you know, I’m sure we’ll all be bigger fans now that she’s cursed us out.” Should Gaga apologize to New York Mets fans, as Seinfeld suggests? Eminem Does ‘Top 10,’ Jay-Z Talks LeBron James On ‘David Letterman’

‘Don’t get mixed up with drugs, gangs or oil executives,’ Em jokes during dig at BP over oil spill. By Jayson Rodriguez Jay-Z visits the “Late Show With David Letterman” on Tuesday Photo: Getty Images Eminem and Jay-Z will appear on the “Late Show with David Letterman” tonight (June 25), and in addition to performing on the rooftop together, the two rappers also talk with the cranky host. In preview clips released online , Em is seen participating in Letterman’s famous “Top 10” segment and Jay sits down on the couch to chat with Letterman. Letterman and the Brooklyn MC discussed Cleveland Cavaliers star (and Jay-Z pal) LeBron James’ impending free agency and the arrival of Mikhail Prokhorov, the New Jersey Nets’ new Russian billionaire majority owner. “The tall guy,” Hov joked, referring to Prokhorov. “You’re a guy,” Letterman then told the rapper. “I’m a guy. Now, if LeBron James wants to be a guy, he will stay where he is and not cut the heart out of that city by leaving Cleveland. You wouldn’t do that, would you? Cleveland is in desperate decline. And one of the glimmering hopes they have —” “How’s your ratings in Cleveland?,” Jay interrupted to laughs. Jay, who holds a minority stake in the Nets , admitted if he found himself in a similar situation, he could concede to Letterman’s point. Only three of Eminem’s Top 10 items about advice for kids had been previewed at press time, including jokes about “Toy Story 3,” illegal downloading, and a dig at BP in the wake of the Gulf leak. “Don’t get mixed up with drugs, gangs or oil executives,” the Detroit MC deadpanned. The two rappers taped their appearance earlier in the week in New York. Initially, they requested to perform on top of the famed Ed Sullivan Theater marquee, but officials for New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg declined to grant a permit. The pair were able to skirt the issue, however, by taking the show to the rooftop of the building and away from the streets where officials had concerns over public safety. Eminem and Jay-Z’s joint appearance was a part of promotion for their stadium concert series this September in New York and Detroit; two additional shows were announced on Thursday.
