Eminem’s ‘Cinderella Man’ Has A ‘Stadium Feel,’ Script Shepherd Says

The 25-year-old newcomer produced and sings the chorus on the Recovery track. By Shaheem Reid Script Shepard Photo: MTV News Script Shepherd struck gold on his first try. The first time the 25-year-old producer/performer got one of his tracks on an album was also the first time he got to sing a guest hook on an album. Amazingly, that album happens to be one of the biggest releases of the year: Eminem’s Recovery. Shepherd produced and sings the chorus on Slim Shady’s “Cinderella Man.” Is the title of the song inspired by the 2005 Russell Crowe film? “Not really,” Shepherd smiled. “I liked the film. But at the time, I was going through a hard time. My brother had just passed away. “It’s a stadium feel, an anthem,” he added about the song. “Like marching, marching towards something. The sound is big, the message is big on the record. It’s about just coming from nothing, not doubting yourself. It sounds like you’re marching towards a goal. The guitars are rifting, and it has little bells keeping it melodic. It’s a strong record that’s motivating. And Em did something motivating with it. I just wanted to have people feel like they’re moving with the record, have a ‘Rocky’ feel. It sounded more authentic to have people feel like they were stomping in the record.” Script said the chorus is a little abstract, but it’s meant to inspire. “The hook says, ‘If I had a time machine, I’d be a Cinderella man/ Music is my time machine/ Call me Cinderella man,’ ” Shepherd said. “Basically, it’s like, music can allow you to do all types of things. You can change the world with music. You can go back and enlighten and move people forward just with sounds and connection. Music is a time machine.” Em chose the song through Shady A&R rep Riggs Morales, the same guy who played Em 50 Cent’s early mixtapes before the Queens kingpin was signed to Shady/Aftermath. Script and his team sent the track with the hook to Em’s camp, but Shepherd didn’t hear the finished version until a few weeks ago, when Recovery leaked. “I was in the bathroom,” he said. “My wife called me, and I thought it was a bug [in the house]. She was like, ‘You gotta come now.’ It was amazing. I was in the house with my family. My kids were going to sleep. I woke them up. … It was such a tight-knit project. I didn’t have a copy of it. I heard it on the Internet like everybody else, and I was the most excited person in the world, besides my wife.” Script’s love of music has been a lifelong affair. In his native Toronto, his dad would play soul music by Otis Redding. Script moved to Brooklyn as a toddler, where he would get his hip-hop influence. Late, great record executive Shakir Stewart signed Script to Arista Records when he was 18 as part of the R&B group Brooklyn. The five-man team would later change their name to Roswell, but their success was not in the cards. Arista folded, and so did the group. Script has stayed in the industry, writing songs for artists such as Sammy and submitting tracks to superstars like Usher. He went in the lab with Usher, just a week after his older brother was killed in the streets. “Foolishness,” he said of how his brother died. “He got stabbed, one time, in front of my mother. That was a hard, hard time. But I know he’s happy with what I’ve done. Just taking that experience and not retaliating and killing somebody. … A week later, I was in the studio with Usher. I was in the studio with Usher watching him, then I’d go in the bathroom and cry like a baby. But it’s not what you go through; it’s how you go through it.” Script is currently seeking a record deal for his solo career. “Me, as a solo artist, Script Shepherd is just a lover not a fighter,” he said. “I will fight for love, but I’m not a fighter. I will go to all lengths to make sure people in the world love each other. Whether I have string guitar or raps, it’s all gonna be moving in the same direction. Thanks to artists like Drake, the world is more open to somebody singing and rapping now. It’s time to bring a message with it. Sometimes the music gets lost in the message. I found a good balance with it. Motivate the people.” It’s Eminem Week at MTV News, so stick with us as we celebrate the release of Recovery and take you inside the making of Em’s latest album. Photos: R.Cruger With the latest fires raging in Arizona and Brazil , I’m reminded of last year’s notorious Station Fire, the largest to ever hit Los Angeles County, destroying more than 250-acres of Angeles National Forest in August 2009, confounding firefighters with the ferocity of its reach. Ash covered my yard, particulates filled the air and a reddish haze hovered. Massive flames in the hillside were viewable within walking distance. Watch Drake Rehearse In Exclusive ‘Better Than Good Enough’ Outtake

Drake and band work out kinks in ‘Find Your Love.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: MTV Most rappers perform on stage alongside a hype man, from Jay-Z and Memphis Bleek to Busta Rhymes and Spliff Star. But Drake — who is already unlike most MCs because he also sings during performances — worries about his background singers when he puts his shows more than who’ll rap next to him. Prior to a recent performance in Toronto, the hometown star decided during his rehearsal that his set would need more than just the band backing him. “If I had a female voice,” he says in an exclusive outtake from MTV’s “Drake: Better Than Good Enough” documentary . “Someone else to go back and forth [with]. His keyboard player and musical confidant “D10” asks if Drake felt overwhelmed performing “Find Your Love” (which he also performed on “The Tonight Show” last night) onstage by himself. “To do the whole thing with no accompaniment, no nothing, it’s impossible,” Drake responds. “No singer — if you look, Alicia Keys, [Beyonc

Ciara Says It ‘Feels Really Good’ To Get Andre 3000 On ‘Ride’ Remix

‘He is, from what I understand, very selective and … protective of his creativity,’ she tells MTV News. By Mawuse Ziegbe Ciara in “Ride” Photo: Jive Ciara has found a way to make her sexy single “Ride” even hotter: a collaboration with Andre 3000, one of the most sought-after MCs in the game. CiCi has recruited the Outkast rapper for a remix of “Ride,” which also features fellow ATLien Ludacris. But the diva didn’t land the collaboration alone; she brought in some music-industry bigwigs to help her out. “My team actually kind of helped put that together. My A&R [rep] Mark [Pitts] and [RCA/Jive Label Group Chairman and CEO] Barry Weiss, they kinda worked it out,” Ciara told MTV News about getting the MC, who is known for being selective when it comes to doling out features. “It was just a really cool thing for Dre to respond back and say he wanted to get on the record.” Ciara also revealed that the remix is not the first time she and the star tried to work together. “When I was doing [2006’s] Evolution, I wanted him to do something with me, and we never got to do anything,” Ciara said. “It’s just really great timing now that we get to do something.” Ciara followers are used to hearing the singer rock with stars who rep the A, like Luda and Young Jeezy, but CiCi said fans are getting something fresh with the 3000 collabo. “My fans are getting an unexpected treat with it. He is, from what I understand, very selective and … protective of his creativity, so it just feels really good to be able to rock with him,” Ciara said. There isn’t yet a release date for her next album, Basic Instinct, but the star said fans can look out for it later this year. “I’m really, like, 95 percent done right now with the record,” Ciara said. “You’re gonna be able to dance nonstop.” Are you excited to hear Ciara’s collabo with Andre 3000? Like many people around the globe, the Bawse is reflecting on Jackson’s life and legacy with the one-year anniversary of his untimely death on Friday. “My second album, Trilla, was named after Michael Jackson’s Thriller album, which I feel is the number-one album in the history of musical life form,” Ross told MTV’s “Sucker Free” this past weekend in Atlanta at the Philips Arena during the Birthday Bash 15 concert . “Shout-out to Quincy Jones; send your boy a beat! Just to see [Michael’s] story, him as a kid, his siblings. That was a story I felt that any black family growing up could relate to. To see the heights that he took it to at such a young age. He set so many trends. Of course he had a great voice. Of course the ladies loved him. They needed oxygen machines at his shows. People were fainting a lot of times. We don’t speak enough on him being a fashion icon. His shades, the [Ray-Ban] Wings, those are the shades I wear to this day. He also became famous for the glove, the jacket, the socks, the penny loafers, the flooding pants. He was a fly dude. He impacted music and mankind in a special way. He’s one of one. It’ll never come again.” Ross’ peers, such as Bun B , Ludacris and Busta Rhymes , have also talked to MTV News about Jackson this week. Rhymes insisted that Jackson’s King of Pop nickname deserves an upgrade. “It ain’t even just the ‘King of Pop’ no more,” Bus said. “I think we gon’ bury that and we gon’ give you the new attribute that goes along with your greatness, as the ‘King of Music.’ ” MTV will be remembering the life and music of Michael Jackson all weekend.
