Orianthi Talks Comparisons Between Adam Lambert And Michael Jackson

‘He’s got that showmanship thing,’ Lambert tourmate and onetime MJ guitarist tells MTV News. By James Montgomery with reporting by Jim Cantiello Adam Lambert Photo: Jemal Countess/ Getty Images Among his most dedicated fans — the Super Glamberts of the world — Adam Lambert is readily referred to as the second coming of Michael Jackson . This has a whole lot to do with his style, showmanship and the fact that he covered MJ’s “Black or White” during his run on “American Idol.” To most of us, it’s a comparison that raises eyebrows, but it might not be as off-base as you’d think. At least not according to singer/guitarist Orianthi. She can see the similarities between the two, and she would know better than anyone. After all, she’s about the only artist we can think of who’s worked with both Jackson and Lambert — as a guitarist on the late King of Pop’s planned This Is It concert series at London’s O2 arena and the opening act on Lambert’s current Glam Nation Tour . So when MTV News spoke to the Australian-born guitar goddess before Lambert’s two-night Glam Nation stand in New York, we asked her about those comparisons, and this is what she had to say: “Adam’s amazing, he really is. He’s got that showmanship thing; he’s a real entertainer. And that’s what Michael was — he was an incredible entertainer. He’s an amazing artist, and it’s great to be on this tour with him.” While traveling as a part of Lambert’s road show has been rather thrilling, when pressed, Orianthi will admit that it sort of pales in comparison to her experience of working with Michael Jackson. After all, that truly was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. And while Lambert is great, he hasn’t reached MJ’s legendary status just yet. “Getting to work with him for the three months I did was amazing,” she said of Jackson. “He had such spirit. When he walked in the room, he just had this great presence about him and encouraging, really sweet. [He is] definitely very missed.” What do you think of the Lambert/MJ comparisons? Drake Serves Up A Quiet Storm On ‘The Tonight Show’

Rising star delivers hushed version of ‘Find Your Love.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Drake performs on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” on Wednesday Photo: NBC Drake reached deep into his R&B consciousness Wednesday night as the rapper/crooner delivered a muted rendition of his hit “Find Your Love” during an acoustic set on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” Decked out in all black (except for his footwear), the So Far Gone star held steady on stage and in hushed vocals opened the number over minimal instrumentation. “I’m more than just an option,” he began, over spare keyboard stabs and drum licks. “Hey, hey, hey/ Refused to be forgotten/ Hey, hey, hey/ I took a chance with my heart/ Hey, hey, hey/ I feel it taking over/ I better find your love.” It wasn’t until nearly halfway through the song when Drake picked up the tempo, though still measured and restrained. The “Find Your Love” performance marks the second time the Toronto lyricist has appeared on “The Tonight Show.” Last June, Drake joined Jamie Foxx on the Conan O’Brien edition of the late night franchise as the two performed the actor’s “Digital Girl” remix. At the time, Drake had only finished his verse to the song just hours before, recalling days later how nervous he was trying to remember his lyrics. “The biggest challenge of that whole day, aside from being on ‘Conan’ and being nervous initially about that, was [trying to] remember the 24-bar verse I just recorded the night before,” Drake told MTV News at the time. “It was an all-around challenging day, but when I’m under pressure, I always seem to rise to the occasion in some form.” MTV followed Drake in the weeks leading up to the release of his new LP, Thank Me Later. The “Drake: Better Than Good Enough” documentary will re-air on MTV Thursday at 6 p.m., Friday at 4 p.m., Saturday at 12 p.m. and 9 p.m., and Sunday at 9 a.m. Related Videos ‘Drake: Better Than Good Enough’ Related Photos Drake’s Style: From A To Drizzy Related Artists Drake

Clay Aiken Would Replace ‘American Idol’ Judge Simon Cowell

‘I would not be as caustic as he is, but if they want to call me, bring it on,’ the season-two runner-up says. By Mawuse Ziegbe Clay Aiken Photo: Bruce Glikas/ FilmMagic Even before sharp-tongued Simon Cowell officially bid “American Idol” goodbye after nine seasons of judging the reality competition, everyone from Perez Hilton to Howard Stern began eying his now-vacant seat. But one “Idol” alum has a suggestion about who should take the open spot on the panel. Season-two runner-up Clay Aiken says the show should keep it in the family when selecting Cowell’s replacement, bringing in an ex-contestant to sit on the other side of the judges’ table. “I’ve always thought it would be a great addition to the panel to have someone who’s a former contestant and knows what it’s like to be up on that stage and be critiqued,” Aiken told . While Aiken’s down with the idea of a former “Idol” contender offering insight, he’s not necessarily gunning for the gig. “Well, I’m so far removed from it at this point that I don’t know if I remember what it’s like, but who knows.” Aiken didn’t shut down the idea of returning to the amateur talent juggernaut that launched his career, but he said his judging style would differ from Cowell’s abrasive approach. “I would not put myself out there to be as caustic as he is, but if they want to call me, bring it on,” Aiken said. “We can talk.” Aiken, however, is not as far removed from all things “American Idol” as he says. For his upcoming tour, the singer is teaming up with Ruben Studdard, the “Velvet Teddy Bear” who bested the crooner in the show’s second season. “We’ve been talking for years about trying to do something together and had never really found the time to do it,” Aiken said. The singer said the former competitors will combine their distinct musical styles on the summer tour. “It’s kind of a musical revue of sorts — some of the biggest hits and greatest songs, from our point of view — and songs that have influenced us from over the past five decades,” Aiken revealed. “We’re really good friends and have a great time when we’re together, so I think it’s going to be a lot of fun to do a tour like this, for us and for the audiences, too.” Aiken released his fifth studio album, Tried & True, a collection of standards, on June 1. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber (file) Photo: George Pimentel/ WireImage HARTFORD, Connecticut — On Wednesday night, swarms of teenage girls took over the XL Center in Hartford to check out Justin Bieber as he kicked off his first headlining tour , in support of his album My World 2.0. During the show, Bieber dazzled the crowd with fan favorites like “Baby,” “Somebody to Love and “One Time,” but it seems the moment Bieber fans loved most was when he flew over the audience in a heart-shaped cage. “I thought it was really cool when he came out in the heart,” Kiera told MTV News as she was leaving the show. “It was, and he was, in the audience. That was pretty cool.” Devin added, “I liked when he flew around in that heart thing.” The chance to get so close to their idol proved to be a highlight of the night. With most of the glowing reviews from Bieber fans running the gamut from “great” to “amazing” to “loved it,” even his older fans, like girls the audience’s apparent median age of 14, caught Bieber Fever. Megan confessed, “I know I’m not supposed to be in love with someone that young, but I am.” Kristen added, “Well tonight’s show was really fun, and seeing Justin Bieber in real person and [hearing him sing] was amazing.” Erin admitted that Bieber’s family-friendly antics made the show even more enjoyable. “I thought it was really fun and it was really great for kids,” she said. “I really enjoyed it. I kind of came in [like], OK, I’m not gonna enjoy it.’ But I really had a lot of fun. It was a fun concert.” Bieber later tweeted that he really owed his successful first show to his fans. “When u have the support of the greatest fans in the world. U just end up smiling. Debbie Gibson, Tiffany To Star In ‘Mega Python Vs. Gatoroid’

1980s rival pop stars will appear together in Syfy Saturday night movie. By Adam Rosenberg Debbie Gibson Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images If you thought watching a supersized shark take on an equally supersized octopus was entertaining, wait’ll you get a load of what the Asylum is cooking up for Syfy. Prepare yourself for … “Mega Python vs. Gatoroid”! The Hollywood Reporter reveals that 1980s pop stars Deborah “Debbie” Gibson and Tiffany will star together in the Syfy original Saturday night movie, to be produced by “Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus” studio the Asylum. Both Gibson and Tiffany have previously appeared in Asylum films — Gibson in “Mega Shark …” and Tiffany in “Mega Piranha” — but this is the first time the duo will appear in a film together. Gibson will play an animal rights activist who specializes in freeing — what else? — exotic snakes from pet stores and setting them loose in the Everglades, where they, of course, grow to enormous sizes. Tiffany is set for the role of a park ranger who “uses dangerous methods to save endangered alligators.” The script reportedly includes a scene in which the two stars brawl, moving from a bar interior out to the muddy swamp. The project apparently came about after Tiffany approached Syfy with the request that she and Gibson appear together in a movie, playing on their old pop culture rivalry. Gibson and Tiffany were never actually at odds with one another, but they were frequently portrayed that way by the media. “Mega Python vs. Gatoroid” is set to start shooting this month. “Pet Sematary” and classic-Madonna-video helmer Mary Lambert will direct, with a script from Naomi Selfman, who wrote the 2004 horror flick “Evil Eyes,” starring Adam Baldwin, Jennifer Gates and Udo Kier. Justin Bieber Kicks Off Tour With High-Flying Stunts

Usher appeared onstage in Hartford for a few seconds, but didn’t sing. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber (file) Photo: George Pimentel/ WireImage HARTFORD, Connecticut — Lights went down, low sticks went up and lots and lots of screaming commenced as a video of Justin Bieber playing video games plays flashed on the stage, before the teen dream finally appeared in person. Dressed in all-white, the teen idol showed off some karate moves, whipping the crows at the XL Center into a frenzy as he opened with “Love Me.” Little did they know that a few high kicks would be the least of his stunts on Wednesday, the opening night of his My World 2.0 summer tour. Bieber made his way to center stage to sing “Heartbreaker Baby.” He demonstrated his pop-and-lock skills before asking the crowd, “What’s up? We do it all for you guys!” He then slowed it down a bit, using his sugary-sweet R&B-tinged voice for “U Smile.” For “Runaway Love” he did some chair choreography reminiscent of the Backstreet Boys “As Long as You Love Me” video. “I’m feeling real good, how about you all?” he asked. “I see a lot of beautiful girls out there.” In order to see those ladies better, Bieber broke out his acoustic guitar as he sat in a heart-shaped cage that was lifted above the crowd. He played “Never Let You Go” while suspended in the air, followed by “Favorite Girl.” He then got to what has become a favorite (if envy-producing) moment in his shows. “The one thing I do when I get to every city is find one less lonely girl,” he told the room before bringing a lucky fan onto the stage, giving her roses and singing “One Less Lonely Girl.” For his next stunt, during “Somebody to Love,” Bieber and his dancers took to the air and Bieber pretended to climb the side of a building and spray-paint it. He slowed down the pace a bit for “Overboard,” which features opening act Jessica Jarrell. The girls went crazy when they held hands for part of it. He asked the ladies, “Isn’t she amazing? You guys are amazing.” Part of the night belonged to Legacy, Bieber’s YouTube-discovered backup singers, who performed an a cappella version of radio hits including Usher’s “OMG” and Train’s “Hey Soul Sister.” After leaving the stage, Bieber came out again and treated the crowd to “Up” as he descended from the ceiling in a cage. Following a break, he performed, “One Time” and “That Should Be Me.” He even sat down at the drums for “Walk This Way.” Then Sean Kingston joined Bieber onstage for their party-ready collabo, “Eenie Meenie.” “Down to Earth” was the last song of the set. But to no one’s surprise Bieber returned for an encore. “I couldn’t just leave you guys,” he said, before singing “With You” a cappella. Then he gave the girls what they wanted: “Baby.” At the very end, mentor Usher showed up said a quick “hi” to the fans and retreated backstage. Bieber soon followed and the night came to a close. Message in a Bottle: Fourth Plinth Celebrates British History

Image by B. Alter The Fourth Plinth is the empty column in London’s Trafalgar Square where a different artist is chosen to design a piece of art to occupy the spot for a year. The last one was controversial: Antony Gomley’s One & Other featured a different person on the plinth every hour of every day for 100 days. The new one by Yinka Shonibare is colourful and quirky and a bit of a mystery. Called Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Fefe Dobson Goes After Cheating Ex in ‘Ghost’ Video — Check Out A Preview!

The Canadian rocker heats things up with a blazing mattress and lots of leather in her new video. By Mawuse Ziegbe Fefe Dobson Photo: MTV News Fefe Dobson does not play around when it comes to cheating boyfriends. The Canadian rocker goes after a loser ex in her new video “Ghost” after catching him making out with another girl. Although the ex tries to move on with his new relationship, Dobson doesn’t let up. “My video ‘Ghost’ is about me catching my man cheating and then me driving him crazy ’cause I’m haunting him,” Dobson told MTV News. The clip features the star wailing at her former beau from his bedroom ceiling, rocking out on top of his convertible in a leather suit, and taunting him in front of a burning mattress. In the video, Dobson harasses her bad boy with the type of vengeful abandon that many wronged lovers dream of. However, Dobson said that doing the crazy-ex thing wasn’t easy. “There’s a scene where I’m standing in front of a burning bed. It was really burning — it wasn’t a green screen. I was like, ‘I’m not gonna do this!’ and I hear [the director] going, ‘Get in front of the bed!’ ” she recalled. “I didn’t want to do it but I did it. I didn’t, you know, get set on fire — which is important!” Even though he was brought in to make her life harder onscreen, Dobson said that filming with her “Ghost” boy toy was the easiest part of making the video. “He’s cute, so it was easy,” said Dobson. “It wasn’t that hard.” Check out the sneak peek video of Fefe Dobson’s “Ghost” and let us know what you think in the comments below! Drake’s Appeal Is Willingness To Tell His ‘Truth,’ Sway Says

‘This documentary accomplishes that for Drake,’ the MTV News correspondent says of ‘Better Than Good Enough.’ By MTV News staff Drake in “Better Than Good Enough” Photo: MTV News & Docs He’s borne witness to the rise of hip-hop greats, from the Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur to Eminem and 50 Cent. And now, MTV News correspondent Sway says Drake shares something in common with the aforementioned MCs: an affinity for the truth. In “Drake: Better Than Good Enough,” the documentary airing Wednesday night (June 23), the “World Famous Wake Up Show” host said fans will get an even clearer view of the Toronto rapper’s life. “Just like 50 Cent has a certain authenticity to the truth, and the way his life was, that led him to become the person he was, Drake — on the flip side of the spectrum — has the same truth about what his life was like growing up that made him the person he was,” Sway said, comparing the seemingly opposed hip-hop stars. “Except, [Drake’s life] lacks the violence that 50 had. It’s a different kind of struggle than what 50 had, but the fact that both those artists were transparent in their truth is what makes them appealing. This documentary accomplishes that for Drake,” he added of the MTV News/ @Radical Media project. The documentary chronicles Drake’s life in the months leading up to the release of his successful debut, Thank Me Later. From performances to downtime to late-night studio sessions, Drake allowed cameras to trail him and was candid about his feelings on fame, his struggle to reconcile personal ambition with responsibility and establishing his eventual place in music history. “I just want people to walk away … just feeling a little bit more confident about Drake,” the rapper says in the documentary. “In no way do I want people to be like, ‘He’s the best. He’s the man.’ ‘Cause I really do have a desire to grow and get better. I do want people to walk away and be like, ‘OK. OK. Justin Bieber? Kanye West? Who Will Be The Next To Sell A Million The First Week?

Our experts also cite Taylor Swift, a posthumous Michael Jackson release, Lil Wayne again — or maybe no one. By Shaheem Reid Justin Bieber Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images While Drake’s Thank Me Later didn’t sell a million copies in the first week, the debut moved more than 460,000 units and landed at #1 on the Billboard albums chart . That’s an amazing feat for any artist, let alone a rookie MC. Meanwhile, Hits Double Daily is projecting a monster launch for Eminem’s Recovery, which was released Monday, selling between 590,000 and 615,000 copies by this time next week. Drake and Em have proven that, despite an overall decline in record sales, artists who are able to engage fans and produce high-quality music will be rewarded on the charts. However, a huge question remains: Will anyone be able to knock Lil Wayne from his spot as the last artist to sell 1 million copies the first week of release? Weezy reached that milestone back in 2008 , when Tha Carter III came out. And while Kanye West’s Graduation came within an eyelash of hitting the mark several weeks later and others, such as Susan Boyle, have put up monster first-week numbers, no one besides Wayne has cracked a milli. XXL magazine’s Bonsu Thompson knows just the man up for the task: None other than Kanye West, whose song “Power,” from his upcoming LP, has already garnered critical acclaim. “In order to sell a million albums, your momentum has to be working on all cylinders,” Thompson said via e-mail. “Kanye’s range is built for that. Musically, he has the ability to simultaneously have an infectious record in the streets and a monstrous record on radio and television loop. Add in his penchant for controversial quotes (he’s got a ton to address) and bringing the fashion and arts world wherever he goes, and it’s a home run (Barry Bonds).” “It’s easy to say no one will ever hit that mark again, but there will always be someone,” said Jon Caramanica, a music critic for The New York Times. “Right now, Justin Bieber has the best chance and also Taylor Swift with her next album. Rappers are in danger.” Vibe Editor in Chief Jermaine Hall said the next person to sell a million copies the first week will either be the man with the biggest-selling solo LP of all time or the last guy to reach a million sales the first week. “It’s tough to say, based on music’s economical climate,” Hall said. “Certainly, if Sony is able to get something out on Michael [Jackson] by the fourth quarter with a solid single, that would be a contender. Outside of that, Wayne’s Carter IV also has to be considered. If he has a lead record anything close to the impact of ‘Lollipop,’ he will be knocking on that door.” Other industry insiders are way more pessimistic. “I don’t know if it’s possible for an artist to sell a million records again in a week,” XXL Editor in Chief Vanessa Satten said. “Seems to me, sales are not an issue anymore, and no one wants to say that. We still stress over sales when we’ve had the Drake and Eminem albums for weeks. Sales are not the issue anymore, so I don’t know if that million in a week is feasible anymore.” “I think Wayne is probably the last one to do that,” ThisIs50.com’s Jeremy Bettis agreed. “I don’t think people should pay too close attention to the numbers. I don’t think the numbers should take away from the actual project. I think that’s the problem with hip-hop. Everyone wants to know: ‘What’s his first-week numbers?’ If it’s not what they think it should be, then they have a judgment about the album, which I think takes away from the project and the actual creativity of the music.” “That 1 million that Wayne did was so out of this world, I don’t know that’s gonna happen again,” radio personality Miss Info said. “I don’t know that’s a fair bar to set. … I don’t think the emphasis at this point is even on sales. It’s about: ‘How many stages are you gonna pack? How many endorsement deals are you gonna have? How many companies are you gonna launch?’ ” “I think, even for record labels, it’s gonna be hard to see who sells a million,” said Angela Yee who host the Shade 45 radio show “The Morning After.” “I don’t think record labels rely on that. That’s why they are doing 360 deals. They’re getting money off your touring, how many ringtones you sell, T-shirts, your merchandising. I don’t know if [selling a million copies in your first week] is gonna happen anytime soon. That’s a phenomenon.” The only real answer? Wait and see. Who do you think will be the next artist to sell 1 million copies of their album in the first week of release? Share your predictions in the comments.
