Hanson Say Their Show With Drake Was ‘Canceled Just In Time’

‘With that many people, it got out of hand,’ Zac Hanson says of the scheduled NYC concert. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Hanson Photo: MTV News Not since a Justin Bieber show has there been such a pre-concert riot . On Tuesday night, when Drake and Hanson were scheduled to play a free show in New York, the crowd got a bit too overzealous for security, prompting the concert to be canceled. “It was still a big show; there was just no music involved, and instead of throwing out the rock sign, it was more of a ‘let’s throw chairs and some potted plants and anything else we can get our hands on,’ ” Zac Hanson told MTV News on Wednesday (June 16). “It was unexpected. There wasn’t enough security and organization, and everyone was just so surprised by the turnout, and with that many people, it got out of hand. They canceled it just in time, I think.” Taylor Hanson said the artists still wanted to put on the show, but the NYPD decided it was too dangerous to even try. “I will say simply that, since last night happened, it’s been all over the place, and there’s been all kinds of different comments,” he said. “And I know that Drake’s people, [concert organizer] Paper magazine, everyone in our camp totally wanted it to happen. And it really came down to the city going, ‘Hey, this is not safe.’ ” The guys said they have yet to catch up with Drake since it all went down. “Everybody has been a little bit shocked at the fact that things went down last night the way they did,” Taylor said. “We’ve already thrown it out there that we should get the Drake/Hanson combination happening with more [preparation].” Were you surprised that the Drake and Hanson show was canceled? Katy Perry Was ‘Really Excited’ To Get Naked In ‘California Gurls’ Video

‘I was really excited to do something like this and really nervous,’ Perry says of baring all in new video. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry in her “California Gurls” video Photo: Capitol Katy Perry rocks some eye-catching confectionary costumes in her “California Gurls” video , but it’s what she isn’t wearing that has fans talking. When Perry isn’t sporting edible bikinis in Candyfornia, she’s floating atop a cloud formation made entirely of cotton candy — wearing nothing more than a pastel-colored wig and a smile. “The cotton-candy clouds! I am a little bit naked,” Perry admitted. “I was naked. And, hi, Mom! Hi, Dad!” she laughed to MTV News when she sat down to take us through the video, frame by frame. Although Perry said the nudity didn’t make her overwhelmingly anxious, the video’s director did maintain an intimate atmosphere on set while shooting those scenes. “It was really fun to do,” Perry revealed. “We had to do like a closed set because we didn’t want anyone seeing anything. You weren’t allowed unless you were a girl or you’re gay; I think that’s probably like the standard for all girlfriends. Anyways, I was really excited to do something like this and really nervous. But it turned out [OK].” When Perry isn’t in her birthday suit for “California Gurls,” she’s wearing a variety of sweet looks, from bedazzled Daisy Dukes to a bra fashioned from cupcakes and another that dispensed whipped cream . “These whipped-cream [boobs] were in the music video because that was my only ammo,” explained Perry, whose album Teenage Dream is due August 24. “It was really intense with all that whipped cream coming from my back through my assets.” What’s your favorite Katy Perry look in the “California Gurls” video? Lil’ Cease Says Nicki Minaj’s Lil’ Kim-Inspired Style Is True ‘Homage’

‘I’m sure she’s got some things from Kim, but Nicki’s setting her own lane,’ Cease says of the female MCs’ rivalry. By Shaheem Reid Lil’ Cease, Lil’ Kim pose with Jay-Z Photo: MTV News Lil’ Cease thinks nothing’s wrong with one MC paying homage to another MC. “All of us had an influence in the game,” Cease said when he visited MTV News earlier this week. “We all came up listening to somebody, so it’s not bad to say it.” And Cease is like most hip-hop fans: He’s been keeping an eye on the unfolding Lil’ Kim/ Nicki Minaj controversy . The Queen Bee has come out swinging, claiming the voluptuous Young Money Barbie bit her fashion style without paying homage. Kim also accused Minaj of sneak-dissing on songs like the Diddy-Dirty Money “Hello, Good Morning” remix , taking exception to the line “Did I kill the Queen?” “When I heard about that, I didn’t have no real reaction to it,” Cease said of the flap. “At the end of the day, it’s a real competitive sport in hip-hop. Kim is one of them people. No matter how you look at her, as an icon or whatever, she’s definitely [an icon]. But she’s also an MC. She feels like she still maintains that [top] spot. She still feels like she holds that spot. You can’t knock her for that. But the paying homage thing, when I seen Nicki Minaj with the green hair, when I seen her do similar pictures that Kim has done — I look at that as paying homage. I saw other things where Nicki did pay homage; she said some [complimentary] things about Lil’ Kim. “But we don’t know what’s going on,” Cease added. “We don’t read between the lines like MCs do. Kim probably sees or hears things none of us probably sees or hears. She’s just making her judgment from what she’s seeing. We can’t knock her for that. At the end of the day, Nicki is Nicki. She’s building her own lane. She’s doing what she’s gotta do. She’s hot, she’s sexy. I’m sure she’s got some things from Kim, but [Nicki’s] setting her own lane … But Kim’s got a right to her opinion, she’s got a right to say how she feel. I’m used to Kim being that way. She’s very aggressive. If she feels like she ain’t getting the proper respect, she’s gonna speak her mind.” In the past few weeks, Kim has spoken out often about Minaj, while Nicki has remained silent. But Diddy , a host of female MCs and Drake have weighed in on the feud. On Tuesday morning, Drake told Houston radio station 97.9 the Box that he had nothing to say in response to Lil’ Kim calling him a “punk” in an interview with Thisis50.com. The Brooklyn MC was irate after Drake spoke out, during a concert, against her jabs at Nicki. “Nicki’s got records climbing the charts,” Drake said Tuesday, as he celebrated his debut album’s official release. “Today, Thank Me Later is out. It’s just about relevant people today.” Do you agree with Cease? Has Nicki Minaj paid homage to Kim by sampling some of her looks? Tell us what you think in the comments! ‘Eclipse’ Soundtrack Debuts At #2 — Should Fans Worry?

We take a look at what that album sales mean for the latest ‘Twilight’ film’s box-office numbers. By Eric Ditzian “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” soundtrack Photo: Atlantic When it was released in November 2008, the “Twilight” soundtrack shot straight to the top of the Billboard albums charts, and by the end of the month, the first of the vampire franchise flicks had opened at #1 on its way to $193 million in box-office receipts. A year later, in its first full week out, the “New Moon” disc also topped the charts, warming up fans’ ears and wallets before the film started its climb toward $297 million in total ticket sales. Now the “Eclipse” soundtrack has dropped, and its opening-week numbers — 144,000 albums sold, good for Billboard ‘s #2 slot on next week’s chart — represent the weakest debut yet for the franchise’s albums. Is it time to panic? Might this be the first glimpse of the decline of “Twilight”? Hardly. “I don’t think the drop-off is anything to be freaked out about,” said Keith Caulfield, senior chart manager/analyst for Billboard. “I wouldn’t pin it on just one thing. You can chalk it up a bit to album sales declining in general. And it’s not surprising that part three sells what it sells in its first week, because as with anything, especially continuing movie franchises or TV series franchises, the interest begins to wane a little as the excitement and the newness dissipates a bit.” Yet it’s important to note that with the first two films, album sales and box-office numbers had an inverse relationship. The “Twilight” disc boasts 2.6 million in total sales and “New Moon” ultimately moved 1.1 million discs, while “New Moon” out-grossed its predecessor by $104 million. Further explaining the disparity in album sales is that, unlike the first soundtrack, the “New Moon” disc didn’t boast a tune by star Robert Pattinson on its track listing (nor does the “Eclipse” album). Of course, RPattz’s smoldering mug is all over the films. The point is, while there is a relationship between album and ticket sales, the two do not move in lockstep. “A not-perfect comparison would be when people discuss the ratings of ‘American Idol’ to how well Lee DeWyze or Crystal Bowersox are going to do [selling albums],” Caulfield noted. “The TV show exists in a different world from the artists and their music. If 20 million people tune in to vote each week, not very many of them are actually buying anything. It’s the same thing with ‘Twilight.’ Some people find the music perfectly pleasant in the film, but they’re not going to be moved to actually purchase the album for whatever reason.” What they will be moved to do is continue to the support the film franchise — “New Moon” swept the fan-voted MTV Movie Awards this month — and buy oodles of theater tickets. “New Moon” is the top-selling pre-release title in the 10-year history of ticketing site Fandango, and there’s no reason to expect “Eclipse” to suffer a dramatic drop-off (pre-sale numbers for the film are not yet available). After the film premieres, there may even be an uptick in “Eclipse” music sales. Following the November release of “New Moon,” Billboard noticed an increase in sales related to interest in the Lykke Li track, “Possibility,” which was featured during a key montage in the film and made the Oscar Best Original Song shortlist in December. “That song really resonated with people, and they wanted to get the album partially for that song,” Caulfield said. Come the June 30 premiere of “Eclipse,” the soundtrack might benefit from similar, experience-based fan curiosity. ” ‘Twilight’ has done a really great job of curating the music on the albums, because it so complements the intention of the films and the author’s intent,” Caulfield said. “People who are interested in ‘Twilight’ are especially interested in the music because it’s all part of one big story.” Have you bought the “Eclipse” soundtrack? How does it compare to the first two? Share your thoughts in the comments. We’ll be

Eminem Enlists Sham Wow Guy For Recovery Ad

Video features pitchman Vince demonstrating the many uses of the disc, out June 21. By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: Nigel Parry Now that Eminem has pushed up the release date of Recovery by a day to June 21 (following the album’s leak last week), the Detroit rapper is pulling out the big guns to promote the disc. In a new video ad called “Emwow” that looks calculated to go viral, Vince the ShamWow guy sets aside the miracle sponge for 30 seconds to sell you about the slice-it, dice-it wonders of the new Marshall Mathers disc. Wearing a black polo embroidered with the Recovery title and his signature headset, Vinny holds up the disc and announces, “Hey, it’s Vince with Eminem’s new album, Recovery, and you’re gonna be clappin’ when you hear Eminem rappin’.” He then demonstrates the “dozens of uses” for the disc, including slicing razor-thin tomatoes for your sandwich, serving as a drink coaster, a necklace for the ladies or even as bling for your garden hose (get it?). He even suggests cutting the disc in half (an unusual selling point for a CD, but we’ll go with it) and using one part to slice cheese and the other to chop onions. “Tacos, steak bone, silicone,” Vince demonstrates, tossing aside a breast implant and oversharing, “I like mine real, so forget about it.” This being Eminem, the ad ends with some bathroom humor, as Vince announces a special bonus product thrown in for free, a feminine-hygiene product called the ShamPon. The rapper surprised his fans at Activision’s E3 party on Monday night in Los Angeles, bringing out guests Travis Barker and Rihanna to help him celebrate the upcoming release. A spokesperson for Em’s label said the album, which features guest spots from Pink and Lil Wayne in addition to Rihanna, will hit stores a day earlier than expected to satisfy the rapper’s biggest supporters. “We believe fans want to support their favorite artists by purchasing the real album and not a leaked version,” Steve Berman, vice-chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M, said in a press release announcing the new date. “At the same time, we realize speed is of the essence when fans are so passionate about wanting to hear new songs from such an enormously popular artist like Eminem. … Even by releasing Recovery only a day earlier than previously announced, it makes a difference to those fans.” What do you think of the “Emwow” ad? Does it make you more likely to buy the new disc? Sound off in the comments. Related Photos The Evolution Of: Eminem Related Artists Eminem

Katy Perry Dishes On Whipped-Cream Bra In ‘California Gurls’ Video

‘It was really intense with all that whipped cream coming from my back through my assets,’ she tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry in her ‘California Gurls’ video Photo: Capitol Katy Perry dons a very unique piece of clothing for her “California Gurls” video , which made its sugary-sweet debut on Tuesday. In addition to her bedazzled Daisy Dukes and cupcake bra, there’s one particular accessory that will leave fans talking. In the latter part of the video, in order to defeat Snoop Dogg’s evil Sugar Daddy and his army of Gummi Bears, Perry turns to her whipped-cream-dispensing bra. “These whipped-cream [boobs] were in the music video because that was my only ammo,” she told MTV News. “I had to slay those Gummi Bears that were very evil. I had to show them who was boss in Candyfornia: the Gurls. The California Gurls, of course.” As cool as the costume may look now that the video is all done and ready for fans’ viewing pleasure, it wasn’t all that pleasant to wear during the shoot. “It was really intense with all that whipped cream coming from my back through my assets,” she said. On top of those chest-mounted frosting cannons, fans will also notice Katy’s cupcake bra, which was also a bit of a hassle on set. “I will tell you that those cupcake-bra boobies, they were a little bit heavy and they were interesting,” she said. “It was really fun making these costumes. They’re all one-of-a-kind, and I love the Bettie Page moment in the red and the whipped-cream cans.” What do you think of Perry’s whipped-cream brassiere? Tell us in the comments! Bizarre Says Eminem, D12 ‘Back In The Lab’ For New Mixtape, Album

‘We’re in our little grimy studio and we’re knocking it out,’ Biz says, in Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Bizarre Photo: Shady The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive D12’s Bizarre says “the Band” is back in the lab making music together. The Detroit collective are simultaneously recording their next official LP and a new mixtape. “It took Marshall a little bit of time to get on his grind,” Biz said of his D12 partner Eminem. “Now he’s about to drop the Recovery album. I got my album, I snuck it in there,” added the rapper, who just released his solo independent LP, Friday Night at St. Andrews. “Right now we’re working on this mixtape. We decided we should work on this mixtape to get the streets a little hot right quick then drop the album. We’re kinda doing both at the same time. We’re definitely back in the lab working. All original material,” Biz said of the tape. “If you got some beats man, hit me up, man. We don’t discriminate when it comes to music — ain’t no politics with us. If you got some fresh music, some hotness, we got you.” Biz noted that with all the fellas back together after a long hiatus, which included grieving over the death of their partner Proof in 2006, the vibe finally felt right. “It’s good, man,” he said. “It’s a nice feelin’, man. We’re taking it back to the roots. We’re in our little grimy studio and we’re knocking it out. I can’t describe the feeling. To get back in there with the group and get on some beats, it’s a challenge within ourselves. We don’t even let each other hear each other’s verse before we rap, so you definitely need to be trying to come with it. It’s a friendly competition thing. It’s a lot of pressure, but it’s good pressure.” It’s probably no surprise that the guy who’s really terrorizing the booth on both efforts is Em. “Em is sounding crazy,” his longtime friend said. “He always sounds crazy. This dude is an alien. He’s probably got hundreds of raps thought about already, in different styles and different patterns. That’s one dude you can’t compare yourself to … or worry about what he’s doing. If you worry about that cat, you’re gonna be lost.” While his rhymes will surely reign on the D12 project, whether we’ll hear any beats from the Shady Records head is up in the air. “Em ain’t really into producing no more, but he’s gonna be on both projects,” Biz said. Neither D12 project has a release date, but Biz said he thinks the mixtape will drop in the fall on the mischief-making Devil’s Night. For now, Bizarre is pushing his solo LP and recording. “It’s a … historic place in Detroit,” he explained of his album’s title. “[St. Andrews], it was a church that they turned into a club and had hip-hop on Friday night. Being that Detroit is such a gangsta city, this was the only outlet we really had for hip-hop, breakdancing and battling. Basically, I’m paying homage.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc .

Drake ‘So Excited, So Exhausted’ On Thank Me Later’s Release Day

‘I was so excited that I was so exhausted, too,’ MC says of long-awaited album’s release on Tuesday. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Drake Photo: MTV News The eager anticipation for Drake’s album wasn’t just coming from fans. It turns out the Toronto lyricist was on edge himself. “I couldn’t believe what time it was, first of all,” he told MTV News on Tuesday (June 15) about waking up on the day his Thank Me Later LP finally hit stores and online retail outlets. “I actually was surprised that I even got to sleep. I was so excited that I was so exhausted, too. I had a long day yesterday. I got right on the phone and started doing radio [interviews], I did about 15 radio stations this morning. “My mom texted me, she was just like, ‘I can’t believe this, because people are saying you sold this [many copies] already,’ ” he continued. “I was like, ‘Ma, don’t listen to that,’ she had some crazy numbers. She was like, ‘Oh, I heard you sold 200,000 albums by 10’o’clock.’ I was like, ‘I doubt that!’ ” There’s no question, however, that the album has generated a lot of excitement . Fans began lining up around the Best Buy in New York’s Union Square on Monday night for Drake’s in-store appearance on Tuesday, just for the opportunity to meet the rapper and get their albums signed. Drake also said friends sent him pictures of the same scene in his hometown of Toronto, where kids camped out for hours to be among the first to pick up Thank Me Later . While this may be Drizzy’s crowning moment, the star said for himself, he was happy for the greater cause: a young artist being able to ascend the heights of hip-hop’s landscape, which long has been dominated by veteran MCs. “I just took a deep breath for hip-hop,” he explained. “To me, it’s not even about me today, it’s [really] about the culture.” Don’t miss the “Drake: Better Than Good Enough” documentary, airing Wednesday, June 23, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV! Drake Fans Wait Overnight For NYC In-Store Appearance

‘I told him I look up to him a lot for going for his dream,’ one fan says after meeting Drake. By Mawuse Ziegbe Drake Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images NEW YORK — Drake’s highly anticipated debut, Thank Me Later, is finally available for his legions of fans. And those fans showed their intense support for Drizzy at a Best Buy in-store signing Tuesday (June 15), his first in-store in NYC. Lines snaked around the block, as fans waited hours for a chance to catch the Young Money MC in person, some rocking homemade Drake T-shirts. Inside, the crowd swelled, as everyone from bubbly toddlers to weeping girls waited for Drizzy to make his 2 p.m. appearance. Light screams broke out when the store began to pump the first strains of his Alicia Keys-assisted collabo and Later opener, “Fireworks.” When Drake finally took his place at the signing table, the crowd erupted into hysterical shrieks, thrusting camera phones in the air and falling over one another to snap pics. Drizzy flashed his million-dollar grin, mugged for the cameras and began greeting the hundreds of fans who enveloped Union Square. About 20 minutes into the signing, pandemonium nearly broke out as members of Drake’s team handed out swag to some fans who weren’t able to get in line. Security then moved the eager Drizzy-heads to another part of the store. Many fans waited for hours to cop the album the night before and came back the following day to get their Later copies signed. “He’s pretty unique. He’s like a big mix between R&B and hip-hop” said Nathaniel Lawrence, who lined up with friends Andy Garcia and Xavior Vittoro at 8:30 p.m. Monday evening and had to wait until 1 a.m. to purchase an album. “He’s just something new. It’s different,” said Lawrence who came back at 10 a.m. Tuesday to meet Drizzy. Tynique Nixon got in line to buy an album at 10 p.m. Monday night and also had to wait until 1 a.m. to plunk down some cash. “But it was good, because Drake drove by to see us, so we got a chance to see him early.” “I got here at 3 in the morning,” said Natalia Morales, a fan of Drizzy’s since he was on “Degrassi: The Next Generation” who was the first girl to meet Drake. “I’m ecstatic right now. I’m still shaking!” “It’s a lifetime experience being … one of the first guys to get my CD signed by him,” said Kevin Benejam, who arrived at 7 a.m. “I told him I look up to him a lot for going for his dream, because a lot of people don’t have the courage to go for their dream.” “He’s the man,” 6-year-old Khamani Hamilton said. Drizzy had some nice words for him too: “He said I’m the man!” “I told him he was great.” Steven Santos said. “My heart is a little pumping.” “I can’t stay focused right now, I’m shaking right now,” said an emotional Joshua Colon, who called out of work for two days just to see him. “This man’s a miracle right now.” According to Best Buy manager April Rivera, around 600 people came out to greet Drizzy, and fans began lining up the day before at 2 p.m. to cop the album at midnight. Rivera said she has witnessed fan mania on that scale for established artists such as Rihanna and Bon Jovi, but not for a star fresh out the gate. “For a brand-new artist, I’ve never seen this before.” Rivera added that the store beefed up security for Drake’s visit as well. “About 20 guards are here,” Rivera said. “An average is maybe, like, eight or 10.” Would you wait overnight to meet Drake?
