Hayley Williams Twitpic: Internet Security Expert Offers Advice On Protection

Safe passwords, avoid sexting are among the recommendations. By Gil Kaufman Hayley Williams Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images When private pictures go public it’s always embarrassing, especially when you’re a celebrity and the whole world wants to look. The latest star to fall prey to a nude-pic hack is Paramore’s Hayley Williams , who told her 600,000-plus Twitter followers on Thursday that someone had jacked her account. The Tweet was in response to a topless photo of the 21-year-old singer that began making the rounds that day, which Williams alleged was sent out without her consent by someone who cracked her Twitpic account, but which some online reports suggested may have been accidentally posted by the singer and then quickly removed — but not before it began rocketing across the Internet. Internet privacy and security lawyer Dr. Parry Aftab — who was one of the experts in MTV’s recent “Sexting In America: When Privates Go Public” special — said on Friday (May 28) that there are a number of relatively simple ways to make sure your private business stays that way. “It all starts with good digital hygiene,” said Aftab. “It’s like brushing your teeth twice a day so you won’t get cavities and won’t offend the person sitting across from you. The first step is picking a password that easy to remember but hard to get.” Aftab said the mistake most people make is choosing a password from the “20 questions” list, which include such obvious things as your middle name, favorite sports team, the street you live on or your pet’s name, all information that is easy to obtain if you are a public figure. That, she noted, is how a kid from France was able to hack President Obama’s Twitter account earlier this year by guessing that the leader of the free world used the First Dog Bo’s name as his password. “If you don’t use a password that’s hard to guess, anyone can figure it out, but you also don’t want one that’s so hard for you to remember that you have to write it down, because then someone can find it,” she warned. The other hygienic practice she recommends is not pre-saving passwords on computers, iPads or other digital devices. Though it is a time saver and might help you avoid fumbling for the right password, Aftab said if anyone else uses the device, it could spell trouble. “If you have an assistant or you share the device with a friend — or someone you think is your friend — it allows them access to all your special stuff,” she said. “And that’s like pre-saving your ATM number. You just don’t want to store that on any device that someone else can access. It’s like locking your door instead of leaving it wide open.” And while Aftab recommends keeping intimate moments completely private, if you are going to sext, she said to remove the salacious images from any device where they can be shared. “If you’re taking a naked picture, the best thing is not to text it,” she said. “You’re better off printing it out and handing it to him, but even that can be scanned and texted out. Anything in a digital format exists forever, and you can never really protect it. It’s the law of negativity in the universe: If it’s there, it will be found.” If you are a victim of a sexy picture gone viral, Aftab said the next best thing you can do is stop it as fast as you can. “When you’re on Twitter and your followed by a gazillion people you can’t really stop it,” she said. “But you can try to delete it. If someone hacked it or it got sent out by accident, which happens all the time, that’s why you don’t keep it in a place where it can be sent out accidentally by clicking a button.” Aftab doesn’t just issue warnings and advice, she has also been working with Twitter on a Verified Twitter program that is now in beta testing and is similar to the one she set up Faceook called the Certified Celebrity Program. “My consulting firm [Wired Trust] is doing it as a free service for celebrities to confirm who they are, so Facebook will protect those pages and nobody can try to take them over unless they’re authorized though a special thing we have set up through Facebook,” she said. Like the Facebook program, the new Twitter tool will allow celebrities to keep their profiles on lock and, if need be, act quickly in case something goes awry. “If Twitter knows you’re a verified celebrity and something happens, there’s a special contact that can shut things down in a heartbeat,” she said. Celebrities aren’t the only ones vulnerable to digital drama. Go to MTV’s AThinLine.org to learn what you can do to protect yourself. Related Artists Paramore

Kanye West Takes On Haters In ‘Power’

‘They say I was the abomination of Obama’s nation,’ West raps on new single. By Shaheem Reid Kanye West Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage While many were sleeping Thursday night, Kanye West was declaring that his hiatus is over as his new single, “Power,” hit the Internet. We haven’t seen much of ‘Ye since he explained why he interrupted Taylor Swift at the 2009 Video Music Awards last September on Jay Leno’s now-defunct prime-time show . West told Leno he was going to take some time off. Indeed he did, but for the past several months, we have been hearing about Kanye working in Hawaii with acclaimed producers such as Pete Rock, Q-Tip and DJ Premier. He was also producing tracks for the likes of Rick Ross and the Clipse. And he recently popped up in New York to preview new songs. While just about everyone who’s worked with him has declined to speak on specifics, people like Preemo and Pharrell Williams have publicly described the supreme boom bap and hard-core hip-hop edge of West’s upcoming album, Good Ass Job. “Power” has the global appeal we’ve come to expect from Kanye. The beat has furious drums and guitars, a bass line that body slams your ears and epic wordplay that lyrically releases his frustration. “I’m living in the 21st Century, doing something mean to it,” he starts off rapping. “Do it better than anybody you ever seen do it/ Screams from the haters, got a nice ring to it/ I guess every superhero need his theme music.” “No one man should have all that power,” he continues on the chorus. “The clock’s ticking/ I just count the hours/ Stop trippin’, I’m trippin’ off the power/ Till then f— that!/ The world’s ours.” Then comes the vocal sample of British rock band King Crimson’s “21st Century Schizoid Man.” Kanye then directs his attention towards “Saturday Night Live,” which has had no problems making fun of the rapper over the years, especially in the wake of the Taylor Swift incident. “F— ‘SNL’ and the whole cast. Tell ’em Yeezy said they can kiss my whole ass,” West declares. “More specifically they can kiss my a–hole/ I’m a a–hole?/ You n—as got jokes/You short-minded n—as’ thoughts is Napoleon/ My furs is Mongolian/ My ice brought the goalies in.” As “Power” progresses, the Louis Vuitton Don talks about his hiatus. “I just needed time alone with my own thoughts,” he says. “Got treasures in my mind/ But couldn’t open up my vaults…/ Reality is catching up with me/ Taking my inner child/ I’m fighting for custody.” As “Power” nears a close, Kanye once again talks about being embroiled in controversy but says his fans still love his music. “They say I was the abomination of Obama’s nation/ Well, that’s a pretty bad way to start the conversation,” he opines. “At the end of day, goddammit I know I’m killin’ this sh–/ I know damn well y’all feelin’ this sh–.” Kanye’s label, Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam, has not yet announced a release date for Good Ass Job. Emma Roberts Joins ‘Scream 4’ Cast

‘Nancy Drew’ actress joins Ashley Greene, Hayden Panettiere and Rory Culkin in horror sequel. By Ryan J. Downey Emma Roberts Photo: GABRIEL BOUYS/ AFP/ Getty Images New residents of Woodsboro keep piling up: Emma Roberts has been cast in “Scream 4.” “I’m so excited to be part of this groundbreaking franchise,” Roberts told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s the perfect opportunity for me to do something completely different than I’ve ever done before.” Director/producer Wes Craven had this to say about the “Nancy Drew” actress: “Emma’s talent, beauty and range will add immensely to the sophistication, intensity and fun of the ‘Scream’ franchise as it returns to the screen once more.” It’s unclear who Roberts will be playing, although it’s widely assumed she’ll be Jill Prescott, cousin to Neve Campbell’s protagonist, Sidney. ( EW has reported that sources tell them this, as well.) Julia Roberts’ niece joins Ashley Greene (“Twilight”), Hayden Panettiere (TV’s “Heroes”) and Rory Culkin, who will take over the franchise from series regulars Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette, all also set to appear. Roberts and Culkin previously worked together in 2008’s “Lymelife.” Writer Kevin Williamson has kept plot points under wraps. Speculation is running rampant as to who will survive the latest installment of the pop-culture-referencing horror series that famously killed off the first film’s biggest star, Drew Barrymore, in the opening sequence. “Scream” (1996), “Scream 2” (1997) and “Scream 3” (2000) were all directed by horror master Craven (“A Nightmare on Elm Street”) based on characters created by Williamson, who wrote the first two films. Williamson created TV’s “Dawson’s Creek” and heads up the CW’s “Vampire Diaries.” The “Scream” movies take place in the fictitious town of Woodsboro, where teens are stalked by killers with various motivations related to Sidney’s family — all while wearing the ghost-faced mask based on Edvard Munch’s famous painting “The Scream.” Filled with meta references to classic horror flicks, the movies deftly blended humor and angst with genuine frights. ‘American Idol’ Winners’ Careers Give Clues To Lee DeWyze’s Future

Will the season-nine champ be a Kelly Clarkson or a Taylor Hicks? By Eric Ditzian Lee DeWyze Photo: FOX “Oh my God. I don’t know. This is amazing. Thank you guys so much for everything,” Lee DeWyze said late on Wednesday night’s “American Idol” finale . And thus, a new champion was born into the world. As he heads straight to his career as a professional recording artist, the most obvious question is: Will he be as successful in the music biz as he was on a reality-TV competition? MTV News studied the history of “Idol” winners for clues about how the ninth-season champ’s career might turn out. Kelly Clarkson, Season One : The first “Idol” champ set a crazy-high bar for all who came after her. You want album sales? A double-platinum debut. A sophomore disc that went platinum six times. You want awards? Two Grammys. You want staying power? Her latest disc hit the #1 Billboard spot. And how about we just forget about “From Kelly to Justin,” OK? This summer she’ll head out with the Lilith Fair tour. Success score: 5 out of 5 “Idol” stars Ruben Studdard, Season Two : While the Velvet Teddy Bear has the best nickname of any “Idol” winner, there’s nothing superlative about his track record as a recording artist. Though his first disc hit the #1 Billboard spot on its way to platinum status, the trend ever since has been downhill. His 2004 release, I Need an Angel, went only gold, and his third effort was even less impressive. His last studio album delivered his worst sales numbers, and his greatest-hits disc moved so few units we’re embarrassed to print the actual tally. But hey, he looked great on Wednesday’s show, slimmed down and rocking a dapper suit. Success score: 2.5 out of 5 “Idol” stars Fantasia Barrino, Season Three : Fantasia’s rendition of “Summertime” might be the finest “Idol” performance ever, a master class in vocal dexterity and emotive singing. The competition was hers from then on. Her post-“Idol single, “I Believe,” was #1 on Billboard for four straight weeks. But her first disc broke the streak of #1 Billboard hits for “Idol” winners. Still, Free Yourself went platinum. Like Ruben, Fantasia has struggled to follow through on her early success. Starting in 2007, she appeared on Broadway in Oprah Winfrey’s “The Color Purple,” and in 2010 she launched her own VH1 reality show, “Fantasia for Real.” The singer is at work on a third album that she somewhat self-consciously promised (during an appearance on this year’s “Idol”) would return her to her musical roots. Success score: 3 out of 5 “Idol” stars Carrie Underwood, Season Four : The show’s only country champ holds the title of highest-selling “Idol” contestant ever with over 11.5 million albums sold. Her first album went platinum seven times, and her second went platinum twice. Her third album again hit the top Billboard spot and went platinum. She saw Clarkson’s two Grammys, then raised her three more. Nine singles went #1 on the Billboard country chart. Another single, “Home Sweet Home,” was season eight’s farewell song. In April, Underwood became the first woman ever to be named the Academy of Country Music’s Entertainer of the Year twice. You can’t get much better than that. Success score: 5 out of 5 “Idol” stars Taylor Hicks, Season Five There’s always got to be someone at the bottom, right? That poor soul is the leader of the Soul Patrol. Hicks had a fast start after the show ended — a #2 Billboard debut that eventually went platinum — but his first effort was for many years the poorest-selling debut disc from an “Idol” winner (Kris Allen now holds that ignominious title). But unlike Allen, Hicks never sold singles, and his songs barely ever made it onto the radio. His second album tanked, and he spent last summer traipsing around the country with the touring company of “Grease.” What passes for his summer tour is a whopping two dates: one at the Syracuse Balloon Fest and another at the 7th Annual Rocky Mountain Power Jam. Success score: 1 out of 5 “Idol” stars Jordin Sparks, Season Six : At 16, Sparks was the youngest singer to win “American Idol.” Precocious she was. A huge seller she ain’t, at least when it comes to albums. Her first album sold the fewest copies of any debut from an “Idol” winner, though it ended up going platinum and out-selling Hick’s disc. Her second album cracked the top 10 but didn’t even go gold. Yet she has three top-10 singles (one of which was a duet with Chris Brown) and has sold 9 million singles, thrusting her into the ranks of the top “Idol” performers of all time. She’s got a packed summer of tour dates coming down the line. Success score: 3.5 out of 5 “Idol” stars David Cook, Season Seven : Cook’s got both platinum singles and a platinum debut, but no #1 album, and that puts him in the middle of the “Idol” pack. And that album, overseen by superstar rock producer Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance), left much to be desired. Last year he embarked on an impressive, 30-plus-date summer tour, but this summer he’ll hardly be seen out on the road. Cook, who was at a cancer benefit instead of Wednesday’s season finale, is going to have to deliver an impressive sophomore effort to leapfrog the “Idol” winners currently ranked ahead of him. Success score: 3 out of 5 “Idol” stars Kris Allen, Season Eight : It’s early in his career, but there’s no doubting Allen has struggled. His debut disc has sold less than 300,000 copies. On the other hand, his singles have performed respectably well when it comes to radio play. He’ll hit the road with the Barenaked Ladies this summer. It’s an open question whether or not he’ll ever enjoy a higher profile than Adam Lambert, the singer he vanquished on season eight. Then again, he rocked a solo performance on Wednesday night’s finale, and Lambert was sitting out, reportedly resting his voice before heading out on tour. Success score: 2.5 out of 5 “Idol” stars Which past “Idol” winner is your favorite? Whose career path do you think Lee will follow? Talk about it in the comments. Why Adam Lambert, David Cook Were Absent From ‘American Idol’ Finale

Cook had a previous engagement, while there are reportedly numerous reasons for Lambert’s absence from the ‘Idol’ stage. By Gil Kaufman Adam Lambert Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ Getty Images It was an unprecedented gathering of “American Idol” royalty. On Wednesday night, all but one of the former “American Idol” winners took to the Nokia Theatre stage to sing a song in honor of departing judge and mentor Simon Cowell. Lined up side by side were Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia, Jordin Sparks, Kris Allen and Taylor Hicks giving a rousing performance of Delta Goodrem’s “Together We Are One.” The “Idol” icons — mostly dressed in black — were joined by nearly two dozen finalists from past seasons, including such favorites as Jason Castro, David Archuleta, Michael Johns, Bo Bice and Elliot Yamin. But where was season seven winner David Cook , the only champ missing from the crew? Cook explained that he was unable to attend because of a previous commitment to a cancer charity event in Kansas City. During his time on the show, Cook famously paid tribute to his late brother, who was battling the disease during the singer’s “Idol” run. He did tweet his congratulations to winner Lee DeWyze though, writing, “Congrats to Lee Dewyze! So sorry I couldn’t be there to see all my fellow idols. I’m there in spirit!” Also conspicuously absent was last year’s runner-up, Adam Lambert . Earlier in the day, a report surfaced that Lambert had been dropped from the number because he failed to attend rehearsals. Later it was reported that he’d been ordered by his doctor to rest his vocals. It was also reported that he’d not been invited to attend. Lambert vigorously denied all those rumors in a fiery series of tweets , explaining, “Would have loved 2 have been at the Idol Finale to wish Simon farewell and support the finalists, but this tour for my fans is my priority,” elaborating later, “I have now just been made aware of more gossip and rumormill: First of all, I was never asked to appear on the finale in any capacity. 2nd: I DID come down w a throat bug most likely caught on my flight back from this past weekend’s concert in Boston.” He also explained that he’d been put on vocal rest on Tuesday after tour rehearsals. Lambert also lashed out at what he considered the irresponsible reports on his absence. “Sad that I’m forced to defend myself bout situation no one pointing fingers knew any factual details about. I’m working so hard on this tour!! All i ever heard was: ‘you’ve not been asked to perform on finale. Would you like to sit in the audience?’ Me: sorry-Too much work to do today.” Much of the drama was created by PopEater.com, which claimed an exclusive earlier in the day on the “bedlam” behind Lambert’s alleged no-show . A rep for Lambert lambasted that report, telling EW.com that the story about Lambert failing to show up to rehearsals was full of “false information.” Spokesperson Roger Widynowski said that like most “Idol” finalists, Lambert was approached by producers about being part of the alumni tribute to Cowell, but that the singer came down with a case of laryngitis over the weekend, and with his “Glam Nation” tour set to begin on June 4, he was placed on vocal rest. “He was never confirmed to do the show. He never skipped rehearsal,” said Widynowski. Though he disagreed with claims that it was diva behavior that led to Lambert’s absence, Widynowski did confirm that the glammy singer sent out a provocative tweet on May 19 announcing that he would not be at the finale. “Unfortunately not performing on ‘Idol’ Finale,” Lambert wrote. “Guess they have plenty of artists booked.” Related Videos ‘American Idol’ Finale Highlights ‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds Related Photos ‘American Idol’ Season-Nine Performances Related Artists Adam Lambert David Cook

Mariah Carey Drops Out Of Tyler Perry’s ‘For Colored Girls …’

‘I’m not at liberty to discuss her personal life at this time,’ Carey’s rep says about her decision not to star in the film. By Jocelyn Vena Mariah Carey Photo: Johnny Nunez/WireImage Fans who have been looking forward to seeing Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson hit the big screen together for Tyler Perry’s film adaptation of Ntozake Shange’s 1975 play “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf” will be disappointed to learn that the flick is officially one diva short. A rep for Carey confirmed to People.com that the singer decided not to appear in the flick this week, following Perry’s confirmation of the cast to MTV News in April. Her rep, Cindi Berger, gave no concrete reason her departure but said, “I’m not at liberty to discuss her personal life at this time.” Her dropping out of the film has many wondering if Carey is pregnant, a rumor that has been following her around since she married Nick Cannon two years ago. That rumor has to date not been confirmed. Shooting for the film is expected to take place in New York City this summer, and the film will hit theaters in late 2010 or early 2011. Earlier this year, Perry (and Janet Jackson) listed the names of the women attached to the movie, which at the time included Carey. “It’s Janet, Mariah, Whoopi Goldberg, Phylicia Rashad, Jurnee Smollett, Kimberly Elise, Kerry Washington, Loretta Devine, Anika Noni Rose … I don’t want to forget anybody,” Perry said. “It’s pretty incredible.” “For Colored Girls …” is based on a series of 20 poems about a woman who is identified with a single color of the rainbow. The stories deal with a wide spectrum of topics including love, abandonment, rape and abortion. Bret Michaels Offers Advice To ‘American Idol’ Winner Lee DeWyze

‘Enjoy what you’re doing, live in the moment,’ Poison frontman says backstage at the finale. By Gil Kaufman Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic The only thing Lee DeWyze wanted to do in life is play music. Now that he’s the new American Idol , the former paint-store clerk from Mt. Prospect, Illinois, will finally get his chance to do just that. He got a big leg up on Wednesday night at the two-hour “Idol” finale, when surprise guest-star Bret Michaels — who joined third-place finisher Casey James for an unannounced duet on Poison’s “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” — offered some sage career advice. Speaking to reporters backstage, Michaels, who performed at the Nokia Theatre without telling his doctors, applauded loudly when it was announced that DeWyze had won his battle with season-long front-runner Crystal Bowersox. “Here’s the thing: Enjoy what you’re doing, live in the moment, get good people around you, and you’ll have a long career,” said Michaels, who was at the “Idol” finale despite a series of recent health scares that include a brain hemorrhage and a recently discovered hole in his heart . “That’s really the truth. That’s what makes it work. Believe in yourself. If someone is pushing you down the wrong path, [say], ‘I gotta do it my way,’ ” he said. “I also would tell him … make sure you love what you do. And don’t ever become jaded. If you become jaded, you lose your soul.” What advice would you give Lee DeWyze? Share it in the comments. Travie McCoy Recalls His ‘Hot Mess’ Days On ‘When I Was 17’

‘In my brain, I was sexy,’ Gym Class Heroes frontman laughs on the show, airing Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. By James Montgomery Travie McCoy Photo: MTV News When he was 17 years old, Travie McCoy wasn’t the long, lean sex machine most know him as today. Quite the opposite, in fact. “Travie McCoy at 17 [was] crafty, artistic, but not sexy at all,” McCoy laughed. “But in my brain, I was sexy.” But pretty much only in his brain. As an oddly proportioned kid growing up in Geneva, New York, McCoy was a gangly mix of dreads, tats, piercings and, of course, more than a little baby fat. It’s the kind of thing he and his Gym Class Heroes mates can look back and laugh at now, but at the time, the situation was downright dire, as you can learn on the next episode of “When I Was 17,” airing Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. “When Trav was 17 — I don’t know if he’d want me to tell you guys, but he looked like a hot mess,” laughed Gym Class drummer Matt McGinley, who met McCoy in high school and soon formed the group with him. “Trav kinda was big, tall, was a little pudgier than most kids. He was a pretty gnarly-looking kid at 17.” Of course, as we all know, McCoy overcame his awkward phase and has since gone on to become an emo/hip-hop heartthrob of the highest order — the guy who, at one point, had Katy Perry on his arm . And with his first-ever solo album, Lazarus, due next month, his sex-symbol status can only get bigger. So perhaps it’s a good thing to look back on his old high school photos and laugh a bit. “When Travis was 17, he had no game,” his friend Chelsey laughed. “[He was] very tattooed, dreads, piercing.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring McCoy, Kris Allen and Kourtney Kardashian — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. Bret Michaels ‘Didn’t Tell’ Doctors He Was Performing On ‘American Idol’ Finale

Singer performed ‘Every Rose Has Its Thorn’ with Casey James. By Kelley L. Carter Bret Michaels Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ Getty Images LOS ANGELES — According to Bret Michaels , his surprise performance Wednesday night on the “American Idol” season finale stage was much-needed musical therapy. Anticipation built quickly in the audience when the familiar guitar chords of one of Michaels’ biggest hits with his group Poison, “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” began and he later emerged on stage with top-three finalist Casey James. “I needed to be here and do this because it’s been two months since I played,” the rocker said backstage at the Nokia Theater shortly after his performance. “It’s been a month and a half in the hospital. It was such an amazing feeling to come out here and jam with Casey. I didn’t tell [my doctors] I was going to do this. I just told them I was doing the ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ finale. They’re going to find out in a minute. But I feel great, I gotta be honest. There’s a still a lot of pain I’m still experiencing. [But] except for a little hitch … my left side from the … stroke, I feel amazing.” Last month the singer and reality show star was hospitalized for a brain hemorrhage and was rushed to the hospital again last week because of a “warning stroke.” On Sunday he appeared on the “Celebrity Apprentice” finale and was named the victor, and he says that he’s ready to hit the road again. “I can’t believe my family let me out. I may not have told them either; I left a few things out,” he joked. “But I needed this for my soul. Honestly. It was a great experience.” He said that he plans to perform again as soon as Friday in Biloxi, Mississippi. “[I’m going to] do a few shows at a time. If it works out, great. If it doesn’t, I’ll start again,” he said. Michaels also reflected on lessons he learned while hospitalized. “I’ve always tried to treat people with respect and I’ve always tried to treat people great. I enjoy every day — every minute I’m here is awesome.” Michaels joked that he wasn’t exactly sure what he would be doing, now that he’s won the title of “Celebrity Apprentice.” He also said that he initially didn’t know if he was hired or fired by Donald Trump. “I leaned in and said, ‘Did you say hired or fired?’ I didn’t know what he said. I just jumped up. I thought, ‘Trump, you’re not going to fire me, right now. I’m on medication. I flew a long way. Holly is amazing. She’s a fierce competitor,’ ” he said of his co-finalist, Holly Robinson Peete. “I didn’t ask Trump ‘What does being “Celebrity Apprentice” entail? Do you get paid? Is there cash involved?’ But what do you gotta do for him? Hopefully, you get to do a lot of charity fundraising. If that’s what it is, I’m going to love it.” And as for that hospital stay? “I’ve spent the last month and a half in the hospital. I don’t ever want to see a hospital again,” he said. “I just want to go out and have a great time.” What did you think of Bret Michaels’ performance on “Idol”? Sound off in the comments below! ‘Every Rose Has Its Thorn’: Behind The Song

Rock ballad Bret Michaels performed on ‘American Idol’ was heavy-metal band Poison’s first–and only–#1 hit. By Josh Wigler Bret Michaels on the ‘American Idol’ Finale May 26 Photo: FOX Bret Michaels surprised millions of viewers, turning up on the season-nine finale of “American Idol” to perform “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.” The guest spot was Michaels’ first major musical appearance since suffering a subarachnoid brain hemorrhage last month, followed by a series of health-related setbacks. So what’s the story behind that song? To some, it’s a tune made familiar by star Miley Cyrus , who recently covered it. But for Michaels (and Poison fans), the song’s history runs much deeper. In an episode to devoted to him on VH1’s “Behind the Music” , Michaels revealed that he wrote “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” as a way to cope in the aftermath of his breakup from then-girlfriend Tracy Lewis. According to the Poison frontman, the song’s titular rose represented his blossoming music career, while the thorn was a metaphor for how success had cost him the relationship with Lewis. Though forged from heartbreak, “Every Rose” ultimately rose to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, where it stayed for three weeks, from December 1988 to January 1989. It was Poison’s first, and only, #1 hit. “Every Rose” became not only a commercial success, but also found a place within popular culture. The track played a memorable role in 1991’s “Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey,” with the flick’s rock-obsessed idiots reciting lyrics from the song in order to gain entry to Heaven. And Michaels collaborated with Cyrus for her remake of the Poison tune, which landed on her latest album, Can’t Be Tamed.” Of course, the song surfaced again during Wednesday night’s “American Idol.” Singing the track opposite third-place finisher Casey James, Michaels provided his supporters with a powerful message: Just as “every rose has its thorn, and every night has its dawn,” Michaels’ troubles are coupled — and exceeded — by his triumphs. What did you think of Bret and Casey’s “Idol” finale duet? Share your thoughts in the comments.
