Vampire Weekend ‘Holiday’ Video Premieres Today On MTV/MTV2!

Low-budget clip for Contra single shows band dressed in powdered wigs, stockings and ordering burgers. By James Montgomery Vampire Weekend’s “Holiday” Vampire Weekend ‘s “Holiday” is a rather cutting assessment of capitalism and colonialism and the special sort of cocoon both those things help create. With lyrical nods to republics on the beach, the tea trade and a girl who decides to protest the war by going vegetarian (as opposed to, you know, doing anything that may actually help), it’s the kind of whip-smart pop that’s in short supply these days — a cranky and clever tweaking of hideous Americans abroad, and equally hideous Americans at home. Needless to say, “Holiday” probably won’t be burning up the nation’s airwaves anytime soon, but that hasn’t stopped VW from releasing it as the third single off their surprisingly successful Contra album. And you can sort of understand why. After scoring a #1 album and a pair of unlikely rock-radio hits, they’re playing with house money at this point anyway. To accompany their odd choice of single, the band has delivered an equally odd video, a delightfully low-budget clip ( no Jake Gyllenhaal here) that sees the Vampire guys parading around Southern California dressed as dandy, European gentlemen of leisure. Powdered wigs, waistcoats, breeches, stockings and a whole lot of ruffled accoutrements — it’s all there. And while it may be hilarious to watch them prance around SoCal, order In-N-Out Burger (at least, I think it’s In-N-Out Burger) and pound on surfers down by the beach, there’s probably a deeper message here: These are exactly the same kind of out-of-touch, entitled intellectuals frontman Ezra Koenig is singing about in the song — only from about 300 years ago. These powdered ponces conquered, enslaved and trampled those less fortunate than them, and did so for centuries, before they were eventually overthrown (and mostly beheaded) by the same folks they’d been subjugating. I’ll let you draw the comparisons to, say, the last 50 years of U.S. foreign policy or the creeping advance of capitalism on the undeveloped world … and what may very well be waiting around the corner for us one day if we keep it up. Or, you know, you could just laugh at the dudes in the funny wigs. It kind of works either way. And that’s sort of the brilliance of Vampire Weekend. “Holiday” might not be the same kind of hit as “Cousins” or “Giving Up the Gun,” but that’s hardly the point. Just by getting this one out there, they’ve already won, even if it’s just a tiny victory. Don’t let the boat shoes and pique polo shits fool you — Vampire Weekend are downright dangerous dudes. That you can dance to, of course. Do you think “Holiday” will be another Vampire Weekend hit? Let us know in the comments Related Artists Vampire Weekend

Simon Cowell Gets Elaborate Farewell From Paula Abdul, ‘American Idol’

‘I didn’t think I was going to be this emotional, but I genuinely am,’ Simon says on ‘Idol’ finale. By James Montgomery Simon Cowell Photo: Getty Images Although the main point of Thursday night’s (May 26) “American Idol” finale was — in theory, at least — to crown a new champion, ever since Simon Cowell announced back in January that he’d be leaving the show at the end of season nine, fans had been wondering just how tonight’s show would unfold. Now we know. Cowell’s departure was treated with equal parts humor and sadness, a mix of a Friars Club roast and a genuine, heartfelt tribute show. And, somewhat fittingly, it culminated in the single largest performance in ‘Idol” history. Show producers poked fun at Cowell’s notoriously prickly demeanor with a series of vignettes, titled “Simon Cowell: Uncovered,” which featured some of his greatest put-downs and bust-ups, along with joking barbs from his soon-to-be former fellow “Idol’ judges. “I think Simon has an incredible poker face. He’s got an ability to really hold back what he’s feeling,” Kara DioGuardi said, while a montage of Cowell cracking up during particularly odious auditions rolled. “He’s very professional.” “Is Simon a flirt?” Paula Abdul asked with a laugh at one point. Abdul, of course, shared the judges’ table for eight years with Cowell. “Yeah, if you’re a mirror,” she said. There was also a song that sampled some of Cowell’s greatest put-downs (“You sounded like a cat being thrown off a skyscraper”; “If you win this contest, we will have failed”; “You sounded like a background singer for a background singer,” etc.). The ditty was performed by comedian Dane Cook, but oddly, it was interrupted by onetime Cowell sparring mate Ian Bernardo, who swiped the mic and launched into a “Kanye moment,” declaring, “Nobody cares, it’s all about Ian Bernardo tonight. I’m going to replace you tonight Simon!” The mic was quickly wrested away from Bernardo by none other than fellow “Idol” oddball Normund Gentle, as cameras pulled away and show producers cut to commercial break. And yet, for a guy who had spent nine seasons shooting down the dreams of “Idol” hopefuls, it was a strangely fitting tribute too. Also jibing with both the “oddball” category was Abdul’s appearance. She appeared center-stage to pay homage to her friend and former colleague, but things quickly devolved, as she joked in her patented mumbled banter about leaving the show because she and Cowell had a love child. Still, things quickly improved from there, as Cowell was serenaded by seven of the eight “Idol’ champions, all of whom had been crowned under his watch (only David Cook was M.I.A.). Then a group of some of the show’s other favorites from seasons past joined the seven, swelling the total number of performers to well over 30. As the crowd cheered, host Ryan Seacrest beckoned Cowell onto the stage, and gave him the microphone. Standing center-stage, with some of the greatest “Idols” surrounding him, the man known for his massive ego seemed downright touched. “I didn’t think I was going to be this emotional, but I genuinely am. … The show goes forward, it will be different, but I just want to thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for the support, the fun, and your sense of humor,” Cowell said. “You know what he truth is, when everyone asks who’s going to replace me, who’s going to be the next judge, the truth is, you guys are the judge of this show. And you’ve done an incredible job over the years … it’s been a blast.” And then he turned to Seacrest — his sparring partner of nine years — and, getting a bit choked up, said, “Even you … I’m going to honestly, honestly miss you.” As the show cut to commercial, Cowell smiled and waved to the crowd … it was genuinely touching. The end of an era. The beginning of the end. Both. Oh, and like, 20 minutes later, Lee DeWyze won. As if anyone cared. What did you think of the “Idol” farewell tribute to Simon? Janet Jackson Sings ‘Nothing,’ Gets ‘Nasty’ On ‘American Idol’

Singer wows ‘Idol’ viewers with back-to-back performances of new song ‘Nothing,’ followed by classic ‘Nasty.’ By Josh Wigler Janet Jackson Photo: MTV News As the season nine finale of “American Idol” drew close to the finish line, the crowd gathered at the Nokia Theatre and the viewers at home waited nervously for either single mom Crystal Bowersox or paint salesman Lee DeWyze to be crowned the winner. But even as their fates hung in the air, the rest of the season nine competitors flocked to the stage one last time to sing “Again,” the 1993 single from Janet Jackson’s fifth studio album, Janet. The former “Idol” hopefuls’ collective moment in the spotlight ended shortly as Jackson herself graced the stage for a moving rendition of her new song “Nothing,” recorded for the soundtrack of Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married Too.” With her hair pulled back tight and her black dress flowing, Jackson proceeded to provide the audience with waves of heartfelt emotion as she sang: And the truth is that I realize/ Love is fading from your eyes/ Don’t know how it came to this/ But we can get it fixed tonight. Jackson’s sweet song didn’t stay sweet for long. As she finished her version of “Nothing,” the 44-year-old singer momentarily left the stage and was replaced by a host of male dancers wearing white shirts and black slacks. When she returned, Jackson’s dress was gone and replaced by a skintight black bodysuit, signaling the transition from the mournful beauty of “Nothing” to the fast-paced nitty-gritty of “Nasty,” Jackson’s second single from her third studio album, Control (1986). A light show of green lasers flocked the Nokia Theatre as Jackson moved aggressively against her fellow dancers, all of whom finished the performance sans shirts. Although significantly more clothed than her stagemates, Jackson was clearly just as thrilled as the dancers as she warmly waved and blew kisses to both the audience and the judges’ table at the end of her performance. Drake’s ‘Fireworks’ Leaks Online

The Toronto MC raps ‘it wasn’t love’ with Rihanna, talks Lil Wayne and family on Thank Me Later track. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: Johnny Nunez/WireImage “Fireworks,” the song that kicks off Drake’s forthcoming album , Thank Me Later, leaked online Wednesday (May 26). On it, the rapper touches on his rumored alliance with Rihanna , amid verses about Lil Wayne and his rocky relationship with his father. “I could tell it wasn’t love, / I just thought you’d f—ed with me/ Who could have predicted/ Lucky Strike would have you stuck with me,” Drake raps in the second verse, referring to the Manhattan bowling alley where the two reportedly made out. “Damn, I kept my wits about me, luckily/ What happened between us that night it always seems to trouble me/ Now all of a sudden, these gossip rags want to cover me/ And you making it seem like it happened that way because of me. “But I was curious,” he continues. “And I’ll never forget it, baby/ What an experience/ You could have been the one, but it wasn’t serious/ There was smoke in the air before/ That was me clearing it, that felt good.” The track was produced by Drake ‘s frequent collaborator Noah “40” Shebib and features Alicia Keys singing the hook. The rapper first began performing pieces of the song while on his current Away From Home Tour. Earlier this month, during the Los Angeles stop, he announced Keys would be featured on the number. The song begins with the lyrics, “money just changed everything,” picking up where he left off at the end of the So Far Gone EP’s “Fear.” The third verse finds Drake opening about his father, a Memphis studio musician who worked alongside the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis, and whom he’s had a challenging relationship with; his parents split when he was only 5 years old. “Everything is the same, but it feels different/ My dad called me up knowing that I still listen,” the Toronto MC rhymes. “And he still got his foot out, guilt tripping/ It’s been years, thought I just learned to deal with it.” Drake spoke to MTV News in April about “Fireworks,” explaining why it would be the album’s kickoff. “The song itself is the first song on the album; I think it’s the biggest indicator of what the album is gonna be like,” Drake said. “That’s why I picked that song to go first, and that’s why I wrote the first verse like that. It’s really where I am in my life right now. I know they’re looking forward to the album, so I want them to get a feel of how the story starts off.” Does Drake make “Fireworks” on his new song? Bret Michaels To Appear On ‘American Idol’ Tonight: Report

TMZ cites ‘spies’ as saying rocker will appear on ‘Idol’ finale. By MTV News staff Bret Michaels Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images Bret Michaels will appear on the “American Idol” finale tonight, TMZ reported on Wednesday evening (May 26). The site cited its ” ‘Idol’ spies” as saying the singer will make a “cameo” during the show, although at press time it was unclear whether he might perform. Last month, Michaels was hospitalized for a serious brain hemorrhage and was rushed to the hospital again last week due to a “warning stroke.” Despite his serious medical condition, Michaels has bounced back with vigor, making many television appearances in recent weeks — including a victory on the “Celebrity Apprentice” — and insisting that he’ll resume his tour with an appearance in Mississippi on Friday night. “I am not at 100 percent yet, but I have every intention of trying to continue the tour starting Friday in Biloxi,” he wrote in a message posted on his official website earlier this week. “I hope to see your rockin rollin, smiling faces on the road — that is the best medicine I can think of right now. You rock my world.” Michaels is set to perform at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi, followed by another 39 shows from New Jersey to Washington. The tour is not expected to finish up until early October in San Antonio. But hitting the road so soon after his multiple health problems seems to carry its fair share of dangers. Michaels admitted that his doctor warned him about the risks of even appearing on the “Apprentice” finale, saying, “Yes it’s been a risk, but I wanted to be here. I came to win and I’m glad to be on the show.” Following the subarachnoid brain hemorrhage he suffered last month, Michaels landed back in the hospital last week with a so-called warning stroke. Doctors also discovered the singer has a hole in his heart and have scheduled him for surgery to correct the issue in the fall. Yet Michaels clearly remains upbeat and committed to returning to his strenuous touring life. “With all of my heart, soul and the remaining organs I have left (lol) I would like to thank each and every one of you for all of your support and awesomeness,” Michaels wrote in his message. “All the good vibes and well wishes gave me the strength to go back to New York and win ‘Celebrity Apprentice.’ ” Related Photos Bret Michaels’ Career In Photos Related Artists Bret Michaels

Justin Bieber Gets Disrespect From Jeremy Renner In MTV Movie Awards Promo

Aziz Ansari tells Renner, ‘That’s Justin Bieber, bro! People don’t talk back to him!’ By Josh Wigler Although his romantic movie date with Kristen Bell didn’t go so well, 2010 MTV Movie Awards host Aziz Ansari is giving “The Hurt Locker” another shot alongside teen sensation Justin Bieber. In a new promo for the June 6 awards show, Ansari and Bieber saddle up with some soda cans and potato chips to watch the critically acclaimed war movie in 4-D — a viewing experience that brings actor Jeremy Renner’s bomb disposal efforts straight out of the screen and right into the living room. But as Ansari begins gleefully cheering and Bieber starts eating his snacks too loudly during one particularly intense sequence, a visibly frustrated Renner loses his cool. “Relax on the chips there, cowboy,” Renner warns Bieber, prompting a startled Ansari to issue a warning of his own: “That’s Justin Bieber, bro! People don’t talk back to him!” Renner tells Ansari that he doesn’t know who Justin Bieber is, and frankly, he doesn’t care — not when there are deadly improvised explosive devices waiting to be disarmed. But Renner’s cell phone betrays those claims once it starts ringing for the whole room to hear — playing none other than “Baby,” Bieber’s chart-topping single. “You know exactly who Justin Bieber is!,” an angry Ansari exclaims as he leaps out of his chair. “And you just disrespected him!” As Ansari fumes like a freshly detonated bomb, Bieber keeps his rage in check with one last potato chip — a snack he eats while keeping his eyes firmly locked on the disrespectful Renner. Clearly, disrespecting Bieber is an act of insubordination! Don’t miss the MTV Movie Awards , airing Sunday, June 6, at 9 p.m. ET on MTV! Slipknot’s Paul Gray 911 Call Released

Hotel worker discovered Gray’s body and identified his name from a nearby prescription bottle. By Josh Wigler Slipknot’s Paul Gray Photo: Bob King/ Redferns A 911 call placed by an alleged employee of the Iowa hotel where Slipknot bassist Paul Gray was found dead Monday has emerged. TMZ obtained a recording of the call placed by an unnamed hotel maintenance worker who discovered Gray’s body. “We believe that it’s a drug overdose,” the employee said of Gray’s condition. “There’s a hypodermic needle next to his bed here.” Asked if Gray were awake, the employee replied: “Oh God, no,” explaining that it appeared as though Gray had been dead “for a while” based on his physical appearance. He identified Gray’s name from the prescription label of a nearby bottle of pills. The employee also said Gray’s mother had called the hotel earlier that day because she was having trouble reaching her son. Gray’s name and the location from which the 911 call was apparently placed are consistent with reports about his death. An autopsy on Gray’s body conducted Tuesday was unable to determine the Slipknot bassist’s cause of death, which remains under investigation. Reports state that the autopsy didn’t suggest any evidence of foul play and concurred with the 911 caller’s claims that Gray had been dead for several hours prior to his body’s discovery. Polk County medical examiners are still waiting for toxicology results, which could take between four and six weeks to complete. Known by Slipknot fans as #2 or “The Pig,” Gray was a founding member of the heavy-metal band alongside Shawn “Clown” Crahan and Joey Jordison. Fans and fellow musicians have expressed an outpouring of support in the days since Gray’s death, with Lamb of God guitarist Mark Morton telling MTV News: “He was an immense talent, and this is such an incredible loss. Paul had a HUGE heart and lived and died for the music he made. I will miss him, and the world will too.” Share your memories of Paul Gray and Slipknot in the comments below. Slipknot’s Paul Gray Remembered Fondly In His Iowa Hometown

‘He was always a man of the people, and he never forgot his roots,’ Des Moines radio director tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Paul Gray Three days after Slipknot bassist Paul Gray was found dead in an Iowa hotel room, those who knew him are still struggling to make sense of everything that’s happened. It’s not an easy thing to do. Though he wasn’t born in Iowa, Gray was still very much a local boy made good, having moved to Des Moines as a child. And as Slipknot’s fame grew, he made it a point to remain loyal to the scene — and the city — that gave him his start in music. “It’s just been a feeling of complete and utter disbelief, and I think lot of people are still shell-shocked,” Andy Hall, music director at Des Moines’ Lazer 103.3, told MTV News on Wednesday (May 26). “Paul was not just a guy on a poster on somebody’s wall; he was a son, a brother, a bandmate and a friend. And he was a great human being. … Des Moines has a very tight-knit music community, and anyone in it will tell you that Paul was one of the most kind and warm-hearted people they’ve ever known. He was always a man of the people, and he never forgot his roots.” Hall moved to Des Moines 10 years ago, and Gray was one of the first people he became friendly with. He said that even though Slipknot were well on their way to becoming a massively successful metal act, the bassist still remained humble, approachable and downright friendly — to everyone. “He was always quick with a smile and a hug and a ‘How you doing, brother?’ But it didn’t matter if you were his friend of many years or someone he’d just met; he would be very gracious to everyone,” Hall said. “He was kind of an imposing guy, but if you came up to him, took the time to converse with him, you’d have realized what a nice, kind guy he was.” Long before Slipknot hit it big, Gray was an integral part of the Des Moines scene. As a founding member of the group — and the only bassist it every employed — he provided the backbeat at their earliest gigs, at local bars like the Safari Club. And though those shows paled in comparison to the big-budget rippers they’d go on to play, they were just as energetic and impactful. Even in their earliest incarnation, Slipknot possessed a will that was unmatched. “They were always part of the fabric of the local scene. … Initially, they were playing clubs and band battles. And from the very start, they believed so intensely in themselves, even when the show was simple and the masks were homemade,” said Des Moines Register columnist Kyle Munson, who spent a decade as the paper’s music critic. “Here was a band willing to put on a show. They believed in themselves from the beginning, and that was the difference. They would have a power-saw onstage, shooting sparks across the stage. The early songs would have little disco jazz riffs thrown in there with the growls. They were a hybrid from the start. … No one could foresee how far they’d go, but that belief always made them stand out.” And from those formative gigs, the rock monster the world would come to know as Slipknot was born. To folks like Munson, their success brought an immense amount of civic pride — a pride that’s definitely taken a hit in the days since Gray’s death. Seems everyone who ever met him, spoke to him or even sat in the back of a rock club, eyes agog, and watched him rip, will miss him. “He always seemed to be a gentle soul and a peacemaker within the band. That’s what I’ve been hearing from people,” Munson said. “He wasn’t gregarious like [frontman] Corey [Taylor] or outwardly philosophical like [percussionist] Shawn [Crahan]. He was more introverted. But anyone will tell you about the happiness in his voice, his smile. There was a quiet joviality to him.” Share your memories of Paul Gray and Slipknot in the comments below. Kelly Rowland Thanks David Guetta, Lady Gaga For Dance-Music Craze

‘He studies his music, and he sees what people react to,’ singer says of Guetta, who worked on her upcoming LP. These days, it seems as if everyone is getting in on the dance-music craze, which has been fueled by chart-topping releases by everyone from Lady Gaga and Ke$ha to the Black Eyed Peas and Akon . And the genre’s resurgence has a lot to do with the rise of the celebrity DJ, as seen with music-industry darling David Guetta . Kelly Rowland , who worked with Guetta on much of her forthcoming, yet-untitled solo album, said she has all the aforementioned artists to thank for the sound on her project. “We have wonderful artists to thank, like Gaga, who have opened up the doors and just really made it start to be a thing,” the former Destiny’s Child member told MTV News when she stopped by the offices on Wednesday (May 26). But the credit doesn’t just go to Gaga: “With David and the Black Eyed Peas, Will.I.Am, we have them to thank,” Rowland added. Rowland might be a bit biased when it comes to Guetta. The two have found chart success already with their 2009 song “When Love Takes Over,” so it felt natural for them to reunite on this project, including the album’s first single, “Commander.” She loved having him bring his musical vision to her project. “He studies the crowd and, I think, he studies his music, and he sees what people react to,” she said. “And that’s what separates him, for me, [from] any other producer.” Are you excited to hear what else Rowland and Guetta have in store for her album?
