U2 Postpone 360 Tour As Bono Recovers From Back Surgery

Frontman ordered to recuperate for at least eight weeks, pushing 16 North American tour dates to 2011. By Gil Kaufman U2’s Bono Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage The good news is that after Friday’s successful emergency back surgery, U2 singer Bono was discharged from Ludwig Maximilians-University Hospital in Munich on Monday. The bad news is that in order to recover fully, the 50-year-old singer (born Paul Hewson) is under doctor’s orders to start a rehabilitation and recuperation program that will keep him sidelined for at least eight weeks, forcing the postponement of the band’s 16 North American 360 Tour dates until 2011. According to a statement from tour producer Live Nation, the concerts, which were to kick off in Salt Lake City on June 3 and run through a July 19 show at New Jersey’s Meadowlands Stadium, have been pushed to an unspecified date next year. “Bono suffered severe compression of the sciatic nerve,” explained Dr. Muller Wohlfahrt, one of the singer’s doctors. “On review of his MRI scan, I realized there was a serious tear in the ligament and a herniated disc, and that conservative treatment would not suffice. I recommended Bono have emergency spine surgery.” The surgeon who performed the procedure, Professor Joerg Christian Tonn added, “Bono was referred to me by Dr. Muller Wohlfahrt late last week with a sudden onset disease. He was already in severe pain with partial paralysis in the lower leg. The ligament surrounding the disc had an 8mm tear and during surgery we discovered fragments of the disc had traveled into the spinal canal.

Bret Michaels Vows To Resume Touring This Week

‘I have every intention of trying to continue the tour starting Friday in Biloxi,’ Poison frontman posted on his website. By Eric Ditzian Bret Michaels Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images Coming off his post-brain-hemorrhage “Celebrity Apprentice” win on Sunday night and with the prospect of heart surgery looming in the fall, Bret Michaels nonetheless promised fans he’s planning to return to touring in just a few days. “I am not at 100 percent yet, but I have every intention of trying to continue the tour starting Friday in Biloxi,” he wrote in a message posted on his official website . “I hope to see your rockin rollin, smiling faces on the road — that is the best medicine I can think of right now. You rock my world.” Michaels is set to perform at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi, followed by another 39 shows from New Jersey to Washington. The tour is not expected to finish up until early October in San Antonio. But hitting the road so soon after his multiple health problems seems to carry its fair share of dangers. Michaels admitted that his doctor warned him about the risks of even appearing on the “Apprentice” finale, saying, “Yes it’s been a risk, but I wanted to be here. I came to win and I’m glad to be on the show.” Following the subarachnoid brain hemorrhage he suffered last month, Michaels landed back in the hospital last week with a so-called warning stroke. Doctors also discovered the singer has a hole in his heart and have scheduled him for surgery to correct the issue in the fall. Yet Michaels clearly remains upbeat and committed to returning to his strenuous touring life. “With all of my heart, soul and the remaining organs I have left (lol) I would like to thank each and every one of you for all of your support and awesomeness,” Michaels wrote in his message. “All the good vibes and well wishes gave me the strength to go back to New York and win ‘Celebrity Apprentice.’ ” Related Photos Bret Michaels’ Career In Photos Related Artists Bret Michaels

Jack Johnson Previews New Songs From To the Sea At Free Concert

Johnson took the album title literally, performing for fans at Santa Monica’s famed pier. By Matt Elias Jack Johnson Photo: MTV News SANTA MONICA, California — Jack Johnson took fans to the sea (literally) on Monday night to celebrate the release of his aptly titled new album To the Sea . The free concert was given to show appreciation for fans who took part in a beach cleanup on Saturday in Santa Monica, which was organized by Southern California nonprofit Heal the Bay. Three thousand fans with free tickets covered a large portion of Santa Monica’s iconic pier for the show. An almost equal amount who weren’t able to score tickets lined the beach below with blankets (those blankets coming in very handy on the unseasonably cold night). Prior to the show, the crowd below was treated to a rare opportunity to hear the man of the night and his band’s soundcheck — thanks in part to the open-air stage. In between songs, the troubadour shouted out to those below, generating enthusiastic responses from the growing crowd. Following the soundcheck, Johnson told MTV News how special the rare pre-show audience was. “A lot of times in soundcheck, we end up just not playing a whole song because it’s just us and we’ve heard it enough times,” Johnson said. “But once there’s people listening — even if it’s 10 or 15 — we usually play a whole song because it’s just nicer to listen to. So this time we had what looks like a couple hundred people at least for a soundcheck. But it was fun. We just played a song that we’re not gonna play tonight — might as well use that one.” While fans might think it’s rare to catch Johnson in such an intimate setting, he continues to play smaller stages back home in Hawaii, mostly for his own nonprofit, the Kokua Hawaii Foundation. Usually in classroom settings, Johnson embraces the unpredictability of not having his road crew with him to set up a professional sound system (he says it’s usually “just me and the guitar”). And on the eve of the release of his fifth studio album, To the Sea (due June 1), the singer/songwriter shared his philosophy on playing new and for the most part never-heard-before songs during his set. “I think there will be a couple of the new songs, kind of finding that balance. Because I just know from being a music fan and going to shows as well, I like hearing some new stuff, but definitely want to hear a lot of the old ones that you already identify with,” Johnson said. True to his words, later that night Johnson sprinkled some new tunes in with his established crowd favorites. He and his band took the stage shortly after 8 p.m. and jumped right into the lead single from To the Sea, called “You and Your Heart.” Acknowledging a few missed chords, Johnson ended the song by saying, “The reason this show is free is because we haven’t played in a month.” The crowd chuckled with him and it set the tone for the loose and free-flowing show. “If I Had Eyes” was next, followed by the Curious George soundtrack song “Upside Down,” which drew a collective “Aww” from the crowd when Johnson dedicated it “to the little girl with the beanie on her head” who was hoisted on her dad’s shoulders. Next up were a series of pairings that Johnson and the band segued into without pausing. They followed “Flake” with the Steve Miller Band classic “The Joker.” “Do You Remember” went into “Bubbly Toes,” which drew a raucous sing-along on the “la da da da da da’s.” They ended the night’s pairings with the crowd favorite “Inaudible Melodies” and “Good People.” Some of the new songs that made it into the set were “To the Sea,” “From the Clouds,” and “At or With Me.” Highlights of the night included pianist Zach Gill’s efforts to keep the crowd warm by initiating an audience-wide pogo jump, bassist Merlo Podlewski’s rap on “Staple It Together,” and most of all, Johnson’s solo encore of “Better Together,” which brought a hush across the crowd, then a whispered sing-along of the tune. And there was no better way to end the night. Related Artists Jack Johnson

Eminem Debuts Album Covers For Recovery

Two versions of cover art for rapper’s new album show a more reticent Eminem. By Kyle Anderson Eminem’s Recovery Photo: Interscope On his recent chart-topping single “Not Afraid,” Eminem includes one of the more shocking confessions of his career in the lyrics. “Let’s be honest/ That last Relapse CD was ‘eh,’ ” he raps during the song’s second verse, admitting to the universe that his hit 2009 album Relapse was spotty at best, a sentiment shared by fans and critics alike. Slim Shady and his producers have made it clear that his hotly anticipated upcoming album Recovery will keep its distance from his previous effort, a point that’s driven home by the just-unveiled album art , which Em premiered on his official Web site late Monday. While the cover to Relapse features the man born Marshall Mathers’ visage constructed of pills, the two covers for Recovery show a more reticent side of the rapper. In the first one, Eminem is walking down a desolate road. We only see his back, but the message is clear: The road to recovery (and to Recovery ) is long and hard. Just as Em’s 2000 album The Marshall Mathers LP had a second cover art variation, so does Recovery. The other cover shows Eminem on a brick courtyard in some sort of futuristic-looking office park. He is encased in a glass cube and sitting on a couch reading a book in front of a giant flat-screen television. It is meant to look like some sort of performance art or observational experiment, but again, Slim is all by himself in the frame. After ducking out of the public eye for a few months, Eminem is back to business and has quite a few projects on the horizon. In addition to Recovery (out June 22), he can be heard on the remix to B.o.B’s “Airplanes” (currently making a bid to be the official song of the summer of 2010), is working on signing Slaughterhouse to his Shady Records label, and has a pair of massive concerts with Jay-Z in Detroit and New York coming up in September. Christina Aguilera Postpones Summer Tour

Singer has pushed dates back to 2011 to concentrate on promoting Bionic. By Gil Kaufman Christina Aguilera Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images You’re going to have to wait until next year to see Christina Aguilera live. The singer announced on Monday that she was calling off plans for an already announced summer tour to promote her upcoming Bionic album and pushing the dates back to an unspecified time in 2011. Citing a busy schedule that includes her involvement in the film “Burlesque” (in theaters this November) and promotional duties for the June 8 release of her new album, Bionic — which leaked onto the Internet on Monday — Aguilera’s camp issued a statement about the postponement. “The singer felt she needed more time to rehearse the show and with less than a month between the album release and tour dates this wasn’t possible,” it reads. New dates for the tour are expected later this year. A spokesperson for tour promoter Live Nation could not be reached for additional comment at press time. The tour was slated to kick off on July 15 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, and wrap up on August 19 at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine, California, and was to feature opening act Leona Lewis. The singer’s first new album since 2006’s Back to Basics has gotten off to a modest start, with first single “Not Myself Tonight” peaking at #23 on the Billboard Hot 100. The accompanying transgressive video has stirred up controversy due to claims by Lady Gaga supporters that it borrows some of the reigning pop diva’s signature moves. Your best chance to see Aguilera in the meantime is to tune in to Wednesday night’s “American Idol” finale and the June 6 MTV Movie Awards , where she is also scheduled to perform. ‘VH1 Hip Hop Honors’ Producers Discuss Their ‘Dirty South’ Selections

Some have criticized the 2010 honorees for who was included or omitted. By Jayson Rodriguez Nelson George and Fab 5 Freddy Photo: MTV News The executive producers of “VH1 Hip Hop Honors” have responded to various Southern rap pioneers who have criticized the production for its 2010 selections, which include Timbaland, Jermaine Dupri, Rap-A-Lot Records founder J Prince, Luther Campbell and 2 Live Crew, Master P and Outkast producers Organized Noise. “We try to pick people from different eras, whether it was closer to the beginning or from the late ’80s into the ’90s,” Fab Five Freddy said of the process, which has drawn criticism from Suave House Records founder Tony Draper and rappers Scarface and Uncle Luke. “And people that carved out specific lanes and styles in the music.” The onetime “Yo! MTV Raps” host and writer Nelson George, who have overseen each show since its inception, admitted that every show will have detractors. “I don’t know if you do anything with hip-hop and not have people speak up,” George said in an interview posted on VH1.com . George said that for every person upset with the process, there are just as many people satisfied, noting that fans of Timbaland or Rap-A-Lot Records will see their favorites. “Depending on where your point of view is [coming from], the show works,” he said. “They say all politics are local, all hip-hop is too. People want their place represented.” Draper has voiced his displeasure in several interviews, saying the process is flawed if only one act or person that represents each facet of Southern hip-hop is selected. Luke felt he alone should be recognized for his endeavors, not the 2 Live Crew collective with whom he worked only on a limited basis. Scarface lashed out over what he perceived was an oversight since his group, the Geto Boys, were omitted, although the influential rappers were signed to Rap-A-Lot. George suggested fans celebrate the moment and those that will actually be feted, a diverse group that they sought to honor the region’s successes. Fab Five Freddy defended himself and his production partner, both native New Yorkers, overseeing a show that honors “The Dirty South.” The two were also criticized for their lack of credentials below the Mason-Dixon Line, however, Freddy dismissed that particular barb and UGK’s Bun B also defended the production. “With ‘Yo! MTV’ and with my curious nature, I got an opportunity to go to these other places where these new forms or new artists where emerging,” Freddy said. “So many people have gone with me to Liberty City in Miami to see what the 2 Live Crew was really about, to go to the 5th Ward in Texas to see the Geto Boys and, of course, most people’s favorite show, the ride on the flatbed truck through Compton with N.W.A. I got to share those experiences with a lot of other people to show it’s not just about us in [New York], it’s cats in Philly and other places that are making viable music with a unique culture. ‘Hip Hop Honors’ is still trying to do that thing. Let’s take people places and really show them and help them understand where it comes from and give props to the people that paved the way.” Are you excited to watch “VH1 Hip Hop Honors: The Dirty South”? T.I. Premieres Second Single From King Uncaged

‘Prison ain’t change me, it made me worse,’ an aggressive T.I. raps on ‘Yeah Ya Know (Takers).’ By Jayson Rodriguez T.I. in NYC on April 20, 2010 Photo: Shareif Ziyadat/ FilmMagic T.I. debuted the second song from his upcoming King Uncaged album on Monday evening (May 24), via his personal website, TrapMuzik.com . Produced by longtime collaborator DJ Toomp, “Yeah Ya Know (Takers)” appears to double as a number from the forthcoming film “Takers,” in which T.I. stars alongside Chris Brown and Matt Dillon. A representative from the rapper’s label, Atlantic, was unable to confirm this as of press time. A more aggressive T.I. can be heard on “Yeah Ya Know (Takers)” — a harder posture than the one he takes on his previous King Uncaged effort, “I’m Back,” which marked the Atlanta MC’s first output since his federal imprisonment ended earlier this year. T.I. shouts during the song’s spoken outro, “Prison ain’t change me, it made me worse. Right, ‘Pac? If I want it, I’ma come get it. I ain’t asking for it — I’mma take it. We takers.” On the chorus, he references his drug-dealing past and the transition to becoming a superstar lyricist. “I went from rolling with the rocks on the block,” T.I. raps. “To controlling my position at the top of every chart, and I will not stop/ Then we ride, then we roll, then you stop, and we go, yeah ya know.” The charismatic MC has kept a low profile since he finished serving out his post-jail sentence in a halfway house. He released “I’m Back” and later appeared with CNN’s Larry King for his first interview, telling the legendary host “depression and paranoia” led to his arrest. “It came from an attempt that was made on my life,” Tip explained. “My best friend [Philant Johnson] had died in my arms. It caused a state of depression and paranoia. My judgment was jaded, and I felt my life was in danger. … At the time, when I felt the need to have these [weapons], I never took into consideration the legalities; I only took into consideration the protection of my life and family.” On Monday, T.I. is also slated to post an interview on his website that was conducted by Jamie Foxx. His album is due August 17. Are you excited to hear new T.I. music? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists T.I.

Slipknot Bassist Paul Gray On Fans’ Dedication

In 2008 interview, bassist, who died Monday, says fans leave him ‘speechless.’ By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Paul Gray Photo: MTV News Slipknot bassist Paul Gray — who was found dead Monday (May 24) in a suburban Iowa hotel room of causes that had not been announced at press time — helped found the group back in 1995, and over the next 15 years, he’d witness their remarkable ascension from Iowa outsiders to one of the most popular hard-rock acts on the planet. And though Slipknot sold millions of albums, toured the world and even won a Grammy, the band never lost the bond Gray — and his bandmates — shared with their fans. It was a connection that few groups manage to achieve, and one that Gray cherished, as he told MTV News in 2008, just before the release of Slipknot’s most recent album, All Hope Is Gone. “It makes you kind of speechless, man. Some kid who’s so depressed or things are going so bad for them that they actually want to take their own lives, and then they listen to a Slipknot lyric or a song … and that actually gets them through that? I mean, what can you say?” Gray said. “I’m just happy that we’re able to do something and actually touch somebody like that, where they do feel empowered to keep pushing on and keep going through what they’re going through, and surviving. It’s an overwhelming feeling.” And though it meant having to deal with plenty of heavy stuff, Gray never shied away from spending time with Slipknot’s so-called “Maggots.” Instead, he opened his Iowa home to them … he considered it an honor. “I don’t know how they do it, man, but they find my address, my actual home address, and I’ll get letter and paintings. I have huge murals, big paintings of us that these guys put hours and hours into. And they’ll send them into my house. I don’t know how they do that, but … it’s really cool,” he laughed. “I’ve had people just show up at my house, and they’re sitting on my back porch drinking beer, waiting for me to come home. And, like, I come home at two in the morning and there’s these kids just sitting there, and I’m like, ‘What the f— are you doing here?’ and they’re like, screaming and, like, ‘Can we come in and hang out?’ And I’m the kind of person who lets them in, tells them, ‘Here, sh–, have another beer, whatever, I’ll drive you home.’ It’s crazy, man.” Share your memories of Paul Gray and Slipknot in the comments below. Tony Yayo Says He’s ‘Definitely A Bad Guy’ In ‘S.W.A.T. 2’

‘Having a guy like 50 Cent as a friend is a big advantage,’ he says of G-Unit honcho helping him land part. By Shaheem Reid Tony Yayo Photo: MTV News Tony Yayo says he will be billed as “Tony Yayo” not Marvin Bernard, his government name, when the credits roll on his feature film debut. The most energetic member of the G-Unit will get his shot at the big screen come 2011, when “S.W.A.T.: Fire Fight” hits theaters. “My part got edited [out],” Yayo laughed about his cameo in 50 Cent’s 90-minute film “Before I Self Destruct.” “I ain’t mad at you, 50. Having a guy like 50 Cent as a friend is a big advantage.” Fif recently put in the call to director Benny Boom, so that his close friend could get a look in the sequel to 2003’s “S.W.A.T.” “Shout out to 50, shout out to Benny Boom,” Yayo said last week during a visit to the MTV offices. “Shout out to my man Lucky. I just feel fortunate. 50 is in the movie world. They’re doing their thing in Hollywood with Cheetah Vision [Films]. They just shot a movie called ‘The Gun.’ Then he just shot another movie that was in Grand Rapids, [Michigan]. He did four movies since I did my movie. It was an honor to be in ‘S.W.A.T. 2’. L.L. was in the first one. Samuel Jackson, Colin Farrell — a lot of big names was in ‘S.W.A.T. 1’. So me being in ‘S.W.A.T. 2′ is crazy. “It’s a lot of big name stars in it,” Yayo added about “S.W.A.T.: Fire Fight.” Kevin Phillips, he played in the Biggie movie [“Notorious”]. Shannon Kane, she just played in “Brooklyn’s Finest.” And Robert Patrick — I got a chance to meet him. I’m a big “Terminator” fan. And it is directed by Benny boom. It was cool.” Yayo plays a member of a band of criminals led by Patrick. “I’m just a bad guy. I’m from the streets, and I do what bad guys do. I play Carlos,” he explained. “I’m definitely a bad guy. I don’t have a problem playing a bad guy, ’cause everybody looks at me as that anyway. It was real easy. … It’s going to be a lot of shooting and stuff in the movie, it’s great. There’s real S.W.A.T. in the movie and they real S.W.A.T.,” Yayo said of the special law enforcement team members who served as on-set technical advisers. “I met this guy, I forget his name, he’s the head S.W.A.T. guy for Detroit. He’s directing the actors on what to do. It’s S.W.A.T. in [the film who] obviously know what to do. It’s amazing to meet real S.W.A.T. They are really in the movie. It gets crazy in the movie!” Yayo said he has discovered a new love in acting, but music isn’t going to take a backseat. His second LP, tentatively titled Godfather of the Ghetto, is slated for release later this year, and he just put out the 50 Cent-featured “Pass the Patr
