Slash Is ‘Flattered’ That Rihanna Channels Him In ‘Rockstar 101’

‘It brings an element of sexuality to it that I probably wouldn’t have been capable of,’ Gun N’ Roses axeman tells MTV News. By Kyle Anderson Slash Photo: MTV News Rihanna can always be counted on to deliver killer hooks and sexy looks in the eye-popping videos that accompany her chart-owning singles. The just-premiered clip for “Rockstar 101,” off her smash ’09 album, Rated R, is no exception. The visual casts Rihanna as the frontwoman for a rock band whose members include Blink-182 drummer (and friend-of-everyone) Travis Barker. Perhaps the most striking image comes during the song’s breakdown, when Rihanna appears dressed as none other than iconic guitarist Slash. And it’s a fitting homage, as the former Guns N’ Roses axeman provided the track’s signature riffage. But the original concept didn’t have Rihanna putting on a gender-bending performance. “I was supposed to actually be in that video,” Slash told MTV News. “I played on the song, and they called me up to ask me to play in the video, but my record was just coming out, and I was sort of worn thin,” he explained. “She was really sweet. She sent me this pleading text to come do the video, but I couldn’t make it work. I told her that me not being in the video wasn’t going to make or break it.” So what does Slash think of Rihanna’s pantomime-like depiction of him in the clip? “The video is way better with her being me than with me being me,” he said. “All things considered, it brings an element of sexuality to it that I probably wouldn’t have been capable of. I think it’s hot, and I sent her a text this morning telling her it was definitely hotter with her doing it than with me doing it. Everything works out the way it’s supposed to.” Slash admitted that he hadn’t heard back from her yet, but their easy relationship is one of mutual admiration: Rihanna is a huge fan of Guns N’ Roses, the singer told him, and Slash was way into “Umbrella.” “I don’t come from that side of the fence, but I particularly liked [ Good Girl Gone Bad ],” he said. Although he couldn’t make the clip’s shoot, Slash told us he feels pretty good about the outcome. “I’m way more flattered that she played me in the video than her asking me to be in it,” he said. “All things considered, she’s pretty cool.” Did you think Rihanna’s “Rockstar” take on Slash was spot-on? Reflection Eternal Flexed ‘Acting Skills’ In ‘Midnight Hour’ Video

‘It brought us out of what we normally do — the real hard hip-hop videos,’ Hi-Tek says of clip with partner Talib Kweli. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Sway, DJ Hi-Tek and Talib Kweli Photo: MTV News When Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek first debuted as Reflection Eternal 10 years ago , the duo’s most well-known visual stemmed from their breakout hit “The Blast.” The video for that song found Kweli and Tek sitting on a park bench outside a housing project as they rapped in a rainstorm — the epitome of the underground hip-hop aesthetic at the time. These days, the duo’s creative process is far different. After individually pursuing musical projects in the ensuing decade, Reflection Eternal were ready to step out of their comfort zone when they came together again for their new album Revolutions Per Minute. The pair took a novel direction on the Alex Moors-directed clip for “Midnight Hour,” a Doo-Wop inspired number. “I think it’s more conceptual. It brought us out of what we normally do — you know, the real hard hip-hop [videos],” Hi-Tek told MTV News of the video, which features Estelle. “It gave us a chance to get our acting skills on, to have fun with a video as opposed to being so serious about it. … [Instead], we just had fun with the music.” “It’s just a look, we were going for a certain vibe,” Kweli added. “Graphically artistic.” The opening shot shows a record spinning before the camera pans up to reveal Estelle crooning the chorus into a 1950s-style microphone. Kweli and Hi-Tek are dressed sharply in conservative looks: a slim-fitting suit, tie, and glasses for rapper Kweli, and a cardigan, bow tie, and newsboy cap for the producer. The video is mostly performance-based and centers on the three collaborators singing and dancing. According to Hi-Tek, the song was originally slated for Estelle’s debut album. But when it didn’t make it to the Brit singer’s Shine, the track went unused for two years until finally landing on the hip-hop duo’s Revolutions. Reuniting with Kweli for their sophomore set gave the song a new release opportunity. “I was working on joints for her album, and I was working on my third [solo] album and we cut two records,” Tek explained. “One for my album and [one for Estelle’s], which we wanted to submit for the project, but it was too late for her album. It was sitting for two years, and I played it for Kwe and he loved it. I didn’t really think it was a record for our album, but we made it work. And it’s a classic piece of music, so it should be heard rather than sitting in my crates.” What do you think about Reflection Eternal’s “Midnight Hour” video? Let us know in the comments! Slipknot’s Paul Gray Remembered By Megadeth, Korn And Others

Lamb of God, 3 Inches of Blood, Suicide Silence bandmembers and more also pay tribute to Slipknot bassist. By Ryan J. Downey Slipknot’s Paul Gray Photo: Barry Brecheisen/WireImage The metal community continued to flood the Internet with an outpouring of remembrances, as members of Megadeth, Lamb of God, Hatebreed, Suicide Silence and more commented on the death of Slipknot bassist Paul Gray . The 38 year old Slipknot co-founder was found dead Monday in an Iowa hotel room. Details surrounding the circumstances of his death were not available at press time. On Monday night, Shinedown dedicated an acoustic version of their song “Simple Man” to Gray during a concert in Minneapolis. Hellyeah, whose drummer Vinnie Paul suffered the loss of his brother, metal giant and Pantera co-founder “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott, just a few years ago, released a statement: “We are completely shocked and very upset after hearing about the loss of Paul Gray. He was a great friend and a craftsman of one of the most compelling metal bands in history. Our thoughts are with his family, his bandmates and his countless fans and friends around the world. He will be deeply missed.” Korn guitarist James “Munky” Shaffer relayed a personal message while speaking with a 20-year-old reporter in Lincoln, Nebraska. “I want to send my love to his family and the band, going through a really, really hard time right now — myself as well,” a visibly shaken Shaffer said in the video interview. “Paul just came to see us play when we went through Des Moines, [Iowa],” he continued. “Man, I’m speechless. I just want to send my love, prayers and respect to everybody that is surrounding his wife and the baby-to-be.” “We are all in shock at the news of our friend Paul’s passing,” Lamb of God guitarist Mark Morton said in an email to MTV News. “He was an immense talent and this is such an incredible loss. Paul had a HUGE heart and lived and died for the music he made. I will miss him and the world will too.” Like Lamb of God and many other metal bands, the guys in 3 Inches of Blood got to know Slipknot while on the road as one of the Iowa band’s supporting acts. “Paul was a very kind and accommodating guy that always had time to sit and bullshit with me,” guitarist Shane Clark told MTV. “I knew his bass playing from Slipknot and Unida before we met and thought he had such a talent for tone and staying in the pocket — a sometimes-rare thing in the metal world. He was an amazing songwriter and a friend to many. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this very sad time.” “One of my earliest memories of Paul was our first tour of Ozzfest together — watching him mow down a 10-foot-high fence in a ‘borrowed’ golf cart, and that famous deviant-yet-innocent grin of his as he scampered back to his bus,” recalled Otep frontwoman Otep Shamaya to MTV News. “And then I witnessed his wonderful insanity onstage. It is painful to write about Paul in the past tense. But he was, as the inscription on Jim Morrison’s headstone reads, ‘kata ton daimona eautou’ &#8212 true to his own spirit,” she continued. “Part mystic, part madman, Paul was a savagely beautiful human being, an incredible writer, musician, and performer and an amazing friend. For those of us he touched through friendship or by his incredible music, there is some anger and outrage at this loss, the senselessness of it, but most of all, it is the heavy drapes of sadness that devours us. Another candle fades into the night; another shadow ascends into the light. Rest in power, my friend. Shake the walls of paradise for us.” “Paul was a stand-up guy and a great musician,” said another Ozzfest tourmate, Hatebreed frontman Jamey Jasta, in a statement. “He and Slipknot changed the face of rock music as we know it. Just about every metal bandmember, from 1999 onward, owes him a salute. My condolences to his band, family and fans. We’ll miss you dearly, Paul. We are eternally grateful for you,” the former MTV2 Headbangers Ball host said. Jasta’s Hatebreed bandmate, bass player Chris Beattie, released a statement of his own: “It came as a surprise today to hear that Paul Gray passed away this morning. I consider it an honor to have gotten to know him. His contribution to the music world was enormous and will live on forever. R.I.P.” Shadows Fall and Nonpoint members spoke to MTV News Monday, immediately after hearing the news, with Sepultura releasing a statement online as well. “I will never forget the first time I heard Slipknot’s debut,” Suicide Silence guitarist Chris Garza said in a statement. “It inspired me to make music and has provided a major influence ever since. My thoughts and prayers go out to Paul’s family, friends and fellow bandmates. I’m on the way to hammer back some beers and blast some tunes for you Paul. Thank you for all the memories Slipknot gave to us. You’ve touched us all with your music and you will truly be missed. RIP Paul Gray.” Last month, it was announced that Gray would replace David Ellefson in the supergroup/ cover band Hail! after Ellefson’s return to Megadeth. “I was very shocked and saddened to hear of Paul Gray’s passing,” Ellefson said via statement. “I considered him an incredible songwriter, inventive bassist, but more importantly, a kind and warm friend. As a fellow musician, I was excited that he would be playing in Hail! this coming month, as I knew it would be a fun experience for him. I’m sad that the European audiences will not get to see him play those shows.” The news of Gray’s passing shocked a community still reeling from the recent deaths of metal legend Ronnie James Dio, Type O Negative frontman Peter Steele and Avenged Sevenfold drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan. “I extend my condolences to his family, to Slipknot and their management, as well as his many friends and fans who loved him around the world,” Ellefson continued. “He was another one of the ‘good ones’ in our business. … A wonderful man who will be missed by us all.” Share your memories of Paul Gray and Slipknot in the comments below. Nas Kicks Off Levi’s 2010 Pioneer Recording Sessions With Slick Rick Cover

‘The song kind of helped me out when I was a young knucklehead,’ Nas says of ’88 classic ‘Hey Young World.’ By Steven Roberts Nas Photo: MTV News For its Levi’s Pioneer Sessions, the popular denim company called on a dozen musical acts to recreate some of the songs that helped shaped not only their careers, but the course of music over that last few decades. A lineup that includes John Legend, the Roots, the Dirty Projectors and She and Him makes up their 2010 Revival Recordings Program. To kick things off Levi’s approached one of the greatest MCs of all time, Nas, and asked him to re-craft a song of his choosing. The Queensbridge MC knew he wanted to go with a song that spoke to him when he was a “young knucklehead”: rapper Slick Rick’s ’88 classic “Hey Young World.” “Slick Rick is one of the greatest artists — not just MCs — artists in the world, and I just really love his music,” Nas told MTV News. “Hey Young World,” it just really spoke to me when I was young. What he was saying in the song kind of helped me out when I was a young knucklehead,” he explained. “I just wanted to honor the song and honor Ricky.” Nas recalled hearing the song for the first time in his sixth-floor Queensbridge apartment. His crew would come over, huddling close to listen to a bootleg copy of Rick’s debut, The Great Adventures of Slick Rick. The song’s positive message — its uplifting chorus promising “the world is yours” became the title of Nas’ classic gem — helped steer the budding MC from a bad path. “It was a terrible copy, but everybody was surrounding the radio listening to this album, and when “Hey Young World” came on — it caught everybody,” he continued. “We were about to go outside, it was night time. I remember almost everybody was there, I remember it like yesterday … I heard the song, and I [had gotten] into it with somebody earlier outside, and I didn’t know how it was going to end. And when I heard the song, it kind of calmed me down from going further. It really did, it calmed me down.” Re-recording the track also brought Nas back to the late-’80s New York City of his childhood. “There were car shows on 125th Street [in Harlem, New York], where no cars would hardly move. You would see people with Connecticut plates, New Jersey plates. The fashion was insane! There were street vendors outside selling knockoff Guess jeans on 125, Jamaica Avenue [shopping strip in Queens, New York], gold teeth, the snorkel jackets,” Nas remembered, alluding to the fur-lined hooded coats. “New York had a way about itself that will probably never happen again.” The song is available for download at the Levi’s Pioneer Sessions website. Crystal Bowersox Will Win ‘American Idol,’ Howard Stern Predicts

‘I watch it religiously,’ says Stern, who has talked about wanting to replace Simon Cowell. By Jocelyn Vena Howard Stern Photo: MTV News For quite some time now, there have been rumblings that Howard Stern could replace Simon Cowell on “American Idol.” But does Stern even watch the show? Well, as it turns out, he does, and he has a pretty good idea of who he thinks will win this season, as the final two go head-to-head Tuesday night (May 25). “I watch it religiously. I believe Crystal Bowersox will win,” he said at the NYC premiere of “Sex and the City 2.” “I don’t think the show has been great this season. That’s why their ratings have dropped a little bit. The judges have been a little soft. I think it’s time to mix it up, make it a little more exciting again, but what do I know?” Stern could be the guy to mix things up a bit alongside Ellen DeGeneres, Kara DioGuardi and Randy Jackson. Though, he’s kind of torn about whether he’d even want to do it. “I don’t know if I’m going to be the next Simon Cowell,” he said. “Quite frankly, I think I’m a little more talented than that. I like Simon. I think he’s great, but I tend to do more than break people’s hearts, their dreams. I really don’t think that’s my kind of job, but for that kind of money, I’d do it.” Stern said his plate is already pretty full. “I don’t think they can get me, ’cause I’ve got a radio show. I’ve got Howard TV. That keeps me very busy, and quite frankly, judging a bunch of kids singing, I mean … what am I going to do?” So if not Stern, then who? “I really would have no idea. Ellen DeGeneres, I think she’s proven she’s a nice talk-show host, [but] she doesn’t offer anything,” he said about this season’s rookie judge. What about Paula Abdul then? “Paula Abdul should do something, ” he quipped. Do you think Crystal will win? Do you think Howard should join “Idol”? Tell us in the comments! Stone Temple Pilots Traded Control For Democracy On New Album

‘We needed to learn how to be in a band again,’ Scott Weiland says of recording process. By James Montgomery Photo: MTV News After nearly a decade out in the wilderness — a time spent releasing solo albums, forming new bands and getting arrested once or twice — the Stone Temple Pilots return to their musical home on Tuesday (May 25) with their self-titled sixth album. The roiling, rumbling, hard-rocking release recalls the band’s late-’90s glory years, while also forging a new sonic territory, one that’s awfully indebted to Let It Bleed -era Rolling Stones. Yes, it’s a brand-new era for STP. It kicked off on a high note with a well-received run of shows earlier this year and continues today with a single, “Between the Lines,” that’s burning up the Modern Rock Radio charts. But, to hear the band tell it, this new era almost didn’t happen. There was a time not too long ago when Stone Temple Pilots seemed like they were done forever. “We produced this album ourselves, but we had some help from Don Was,” frontman Scott Weiland told MTV News. “It came at a point where we were sort of stuck, and he was great. … He got us all together and had us play the songs live. And that was important. We had been doing our own thing for so long, we needed to learn how to be in a band again. “Making a solo album is kind of easy,” Weiland continued. “Being in a democracy is difficult, because everyone has their own ideas, and you have to be able to respect those ideas. So making a solo album, or these guys doing what they’ve done on the outside, it’s like, you get a lot more control; you do what you want to do. And sometimes those things need to be done in order for a band to get back together and appreciate what it’s all about.” And that joy of reconnecting is readily apparent on the band’s sixth album. There’s a sense of the band rediscovering their old magic (like on “Between the Lines”), while also trusting one another enough to push the boundaries (the bluesy stomp of tracks like “Huckleberry Crumble” or “Hickory Dichotomy,” the Country leanings of album closer “Maver”). The delicate balance that required STP to embrace their past — warts and all — and look boldly forward too. There were some stumbles, but once they found their footing, everything else simply fell into place. “We’ve all been trying to get away from the guy in the mirror for quite some time now … but when it comes down to it, we’re all kind of the same,” guitarist Dean DeLeo said. “I was just laughing about this with a friend of mine, and I was like, ‘You know, we all still laugh at the same old things, and still kind of dig the same sorts of fashion and music.’ And it’s like, ‘Are we going to be 70-year-old guys still laughing at the same old things, and driving down the same old streets and going to the same old bars?’ I don’t know. I suppose we’re creatures of habit in that respect, but I’m pretty comfortable doing it.” “I think the older that we’ve gotten, we’ve kind of gone back more to our roots, the Beatles and Stones and Zeppelin … but there’s still that urgency to step outside your comfort zone and write a song like ‘Maver,’ ” Weiland added. “That’s why we’ve had such a long career; we never ape ourselves. We don’t want to steal from ourselves. I think that everything we’ve done in between has added to what we are right now.” Which era of Stone Temple Pilots is your favorite? Rihanna Channels Slash In ‘Rockstar 101’ Video

Travis Barker appears in latest clip from Rihanna’s Rated R LP. By Jayson Rodriguez Rihanna in her “Rockstar 101” video Photo: Def Jam Burning flames? Smashed guitars? Slash? Well, it’s not quite a Guns N’ Roses video, but Rihanna premiered her “Rockstar 101” clip Tuesday (May 25) in full-on rocker fashion, donning a top hat, shades, and holding an axe to complete her makeover into the legendary guitarist. The video is a mix of goth bondage-esque voyeurism, complete with Rihanna’s gyrating moves and a raging band that features Travis Barker on the drums. “Strut up in the club, posted in the back, feeling so good, looking so bad,” Rihanna sings. “Rocking this skirt, rocking this club, got my middle finger up, I don’t really give a f—.” “Rockstar 101,” featuring Slash, is the fourth single from Rihanna’s recent Rated R LP, following “Russian Roulette,” “Hard” and “Rude Boy.” The song was written and produced by The-Dream and Christopher “Tricky” Stewart; the pair also oversaw “Hard,” which broke into the top 10 of Billboard ‘s Hot 100 singles chart. Although Slash is featured on the track as a performer, the GNR member doesn’t quite appear in the video — at least, not in the flesh. But Rihanna pays homage to him toward the end of the clip, comically sporting a skull-laden top hat, leather jacket, dark glasses and toothpick. Rihanna projects Slash’s swagger and plays the guitar in a way that would make most blush. Rihanna straddles the instrument in one shot and later suggestively points it up from her crotch, a la Prince. Last month, Rihanna performed “Rockstar 101” on “American Idol,” and in March Travis Barker raved about her burgeoning drumming and guitar skills. “She jams! Watch out for her,” Barker later tweeted. Jack Johnson’s To The Sea: Hear It Now On The Leak!

New album forgoes polished production to remind listeners ‘that it’s humans doing it.’ By James Montgomery Jack Johnson Photo: Bradley Kanaris/ Getty Images Jack Johnson’s To the Sea — available to stream right now on MTV’s The Leak — is an album born out of happy accidents. A flubbed chord here, a stray snare snap there — it’s lively and warm and intimate, sounding very much like a band getting together in a room and just playing. Which was precisely the goal, as Johnson told MTV News earlier this year. “With the technology these days, you can look at music instead of listening to it sometimes,” he said. “You can look and say, ‘Oh yeah, see, the bass drum doesn’t line up with the guitar hit there, let’s move that.’ [And] we tried not to do that on this one. Sometimes, when things don’t line up, it actually makes it them better. You listen to old records, when they didn’t have the capability of cutting things together, that’s the magic of it. … It reminds you that it’s humans doing it.” And Sea is very much a human record, full of crackling instrumentation and Johnson’s ruminations on life, love and spirituality. The title track explores “the archetype of the wild man … deep down in the mind, waiting to be discovered.” First single “You and Your Heart” is about the internal struggle between the heart and the brain — “That area you get in sometimes, where you stop trusting your heart and you start thinking too much,” as Johnson put it. And “At or With Me,” well, it’s just a fun, funky tune, recorded live and left untouched. “That’s a really fun track,” Johnson said. “We did it one time, thinking it was just demo-ing. … It was one take, one time, and that’s the tone on the album.” All in all, there’s a whole lot of energy on To the Sea. But why bother reading about it when you can hear the album for yourself? Though it doesn’t hit stores until June 1, you can hear it right now over on The Leak . Consider it an early, and very human, start to your summer. Share your reviews of Jack Johnson’s To the Sea in the comments below. Related Artists Jack Johnson

Rick Ross Talks About ‘Secrets’ Shared With Kanye West

Pair collaborated on ‘club banger’ called ‘Live Fast, Die Young’ for Ross’ Teflon Don LP. By Shaheem Reid Rick Ross Photo: Akshay Bhansali The respect level between Def Jam labelmates Rick Ross and Kanye West is so (super) high, that the two just don’t collaborate on songs, they share in-studio recording secrets, musician to musician. Ross went to Hawaii earlier this year to work with West on his Teflon Don LP, due July 6. “It was my first time there,” Ross said about his trip to West’ island sanctuary. “Just to see how beautiful it was — how serene it was. Just to walk into this orbit — I like to call it — which Kanye creates his music in. We both were having breakfast one morning and we were talking, we both were telling each other just recording secrets, things that artists don’t usually share with each other.” The Bawse said Kanye dropped a gem on him that was remarkable and unexpected. “One of the most incredible things he said — or really that I’ve heard in my whole career — he told me and showed me how to hear sounds in colors,” Ross said. “I was mesmerized, but I don’t wanna go too deep into it. We came up with a record called ‘Live Fast and Die Young,’ I can’t wait for it to hit the streets. You’re going to hear it real soon.” Despite the serious title, Ross said the tune will bring people out to the dance floor. “Most definitely!,” the Miami MC promised. “It’s gonna be most definitely a club banger, but it has that edge to it. That’s how ‘Ye loves to make music, he loves to take it to the edge. That’s where we went with it. It makes you feel like if you had that one record the rest of your life to play, that’s it right here. It’s really gonna make you feel good. We both talk about seeing the pitfalls in our rearview [mirror]. It’s a feel-good record.” “Live Fast and Die Young” is under serious consideration to be Teflon Don ‘s second official single, following up the Ne-Yo assisted “Super High.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Rick Ross Related Artists Rick Ross (Hip-Hop) Kanye West
