Passion Pit’s ‘Take A Walk’: The ‘Not Political’ Anthem Of Our Times

Frontman Michael Angelakos talks to MTV News about the first single off Gossamer. By James Montgomery Michael Angelakos of Passion Pit Photo: Getty Images When Passion Pit ‘s Michael Angelakos learned that his label chose “Take a Walk” as the first single from his band’s upcoming Gossamer album — the follow-up to their breakout debut, Manners — he was understandably nervous. Though not for the reasons you might expect. “It was really odd when they said it was going to be the first single, I was like ‘I don’t know if anyone’s going to get it,'” he told MTV News on Wednesday (May 9). “And then I thought everyone was going to think I was being really political, and I don’t think it is political, it’s more about family to me. I really don’t consider myself a very political person; I really don’t like political songs, frankly.” It’s not difficult to see why he was concerned. After all, with its mentions of disappearing pension funds, overdrawn accounts and “socialists and all their damn taxes,” “Take A Walk” seems very much to be a political anthem — one that could only have been written post financial crisis. And, since it premiered earlier this week, most have viewed it as such. But, as Angelakos said, the song is really about his family; each verse is about a member of his family at one point in their lives — from an immigrant selling flowers outside Penn Station to a well-heeled (though financially strapped) member of society. And, in a way, the song is also about him. “It’s about very specific family members, the male hierarchy, and how the men in my family have always dealt with money. I’ve always been really fond of a lot of my family members and not so fond of others,” he laughed. “All these men were very conservative; socially very liberal but for some reason, they all came here for capitalism, and they all ended up kind of being prey to capitalism. And I’m not making any political statements or anything, but it’s ironic and it’s sad. “So when people started talking about it as an ‘immigrant song’ or whatever, I was like, ‘OK’ … I didn’t want to make it into a greater political issue, especially considering the timeliness of it. I didn’t want people to read it the wrong way,” he continued. “I was more or less interested in analyzing my own family, and that was my way of talking about myself, because I’m a product of these men; I’m their blood. And that was a new way for me to express something.” And that new way of expression also helps shape Gossamer (due July 24), which sees Angelakos coming to terms with the failings in his own life … for reasons he’s not entirely sure of (“I don’t know why I felt the need to write so much non-fiction,” he laughed). And it’s why, for the first time, he says he’s endlessly proud of the finished product. And not overly concerned with whether it manages to match the commercial success of Manners. To him, Gossamer goes much deeper than any of that. “This record was a struggle, that’s for sure. At the time of making it, [I was in] a relationship that just felt like, ‘Things are perfect, things are falling apart,’ and it was mostly of my doing, because it was such a hard process making this record,” he said. “Everything on the record’s true, everything happened to me, I’m the one that made the mess and everyone else had to clean up around me. And the guilt and the pain that I felt throughout the record is definitely evident. “It’s about the ways of dealing with pain and anxiety. Social issues are dealt with today in a variety of ways, of which I don’t need to indulge in for you to understand; and I kind of gave in to those things, and I just lost control at a certain point,” he continued. “And it was about regaining control. Once I did, that’s when I finished the record. You can’t make a record when you were in a terrible place, and most of the time, I wasn’t finishing a record, I was treading water, and finally at a certain point, everything kind of clicked, and I saw what was happening. It involved being very open and honest, but that was my therapy in a way. I’m really proud of it.” What do you think of “Take a Walk”? Leave your comments below! Related Artists Passion Pit

Maroon 5’s ‘Payphone’ Video: Go Behind The Scenes Now!

‘We decided to not play by the rules,’ Adam Levine says of the band’s upcoming clip, which features Wiz Khalifa. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Kara Warner Maroon 5’s Adam Levine Photo: MTV News When it came time to think up a treatment for “Payphone,” the first single off Maroon 5’s upcoming Overexposed album, frontman Adam Levine knew exactly what he wanted … he also knew there would be some occupational hazards involved in getting his way. “The video is this crazy thing; it’s about a bank robber, it was actually an idea that I had, and Sam Bayer, who’s a brilliant director is doing it,” he told MTV News on the “Payphone” set. “I work at a bank and I wear these glasses that are really a bit creepy and maybe make me look like a child molester. It’s a real go-for-it, swing-for-the-fences video, I get brave and I steal a gun from one of the guys and try to be a bad-ass, which is weird, because I’m not a badass.” And from his mind to an actual bank vault in Los Angeles, the “Payphone” video is shaping up to be a pretty epic clip … not to mention everything Levine imagined. “I love to write video treatments; I would actually professionally write treatments. I don’t even want to direct anything. I just love coming up with outlandish, fun things that I’ve always wanted to do,” he said. “I don’t think they’ll be able to play it on MTV actually, because there’s guns in it. Maybe they’ll have to blur the guns out. But we decided to kind of not play by the rules, as far as the typical video goes; I’m sick of seeing just a band playing a song in a video, I think it’s fun to try to do something far more different.” Of course, doing something different also means lining up none other than Wiz Khalifa to guest on the track, especially since, on Overexposed Levine said the band maintained a strict “no guests” approach (especially given the success of the Christina-Aguilera-guesting hit “Moves Like Jagger” ). Though, with the song completed and the video shot, Levine says he’s glad the band bent the rules to get Khalifa. “Wiz is an amazing dude, and he’s just the future. He’s already so huge, but he hasn’t really done many big pop records, actually, so just the idea that he’d be interested in doing it was enough to get him involved. It was too good to pass up,” he said. “He’s a wonderful guy, he’s so creative and so quick … watching him in the studio, he was just so in it, within 30 minutes he had this incredible verse and he’d already knocked it out. That dude is really prolific and really talented.” Related Artists Maroon 5 Wiz Khalifa

Rihanna On Mend After Flu-Related IV

After ‘Battleship’ star tweets photo of an IV in her arm, source says she had a fever and flu ‘but is fine now.’ By Kara Warner Rihanna Photo: Lester Cohen/ WireImage Celebrities: They’re just like us! Even the most famous pop stars catch the flu bug every now and then — at least, that’s what seems to have been ailing Rihanna recently. The 24-year-old singer issued a colorful complaint about feeling under the weather via Twitter over the weekend, and then surprised her 18 million followers with the photographic proof of her unidentified illness Tuesday with a Twit pic that showed RiRi in bed with an IV in her arm. According to People , a source close to Rihanna said the singer is on the mend and was not suffering from anything serious: “She had a fever and flu since last week and needed an IV, but is fine now.” Not that we’re qualified to offer a diagnosis here at MTV News, but judging from all the traveling, performing and promotion Rihanna has been involved in during the past month leading up to the release of her first movie, “Battleship,” as well as her performance on “SNL,” it seems likely the young woman was simply worn out. Here’s hoping she takes some actual time off for rest and relaxation. Meanwhile, we only have to wait a little while longer to see the “Where Have U Been” singer in her big-screen debut, a role that Rihanna said she relished because she got to be a total badass. “I wanted to do something badass, but I didn’t imagine it would be grungy, like straight Navy soldier, no makeup,” Rihanna said of her expectations for her first movie role. “I enjoyed it. “Battleship” opens May 18. Check out everything we’ve got on “Battleship.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . President Obama Supports Same-Sex Marriage

‘It is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married,’ he tells ‘Good Morning America.’ By Kara Warner President Barack Obama Photo: ABC President Obama has officially announced his support of same-sex marriage, hot on the heels of the media storm caused by North Carolina’s constitutional ban of gay marriage , as well as Vice President Joe Biden’s recent comments that he is “absolutely comfortable” with it. Although at times it seemed Obama was reluctant to publicly announce whether he fully supported the issue, instead supporting civil unions, the POTUS made his stance clear in an interview with “Good Morning America” that will air Thursday morning. “I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors, when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me, personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married,” Obama told Robin Roberts during the interview. The president went on to say that he is confident more Americans will become comfortable with the idea and cited his daughters’ progressive perspectives on the subject as a primary example. “It’s interesting, some of this is also generational,” he said. “You know when I go to college campuses, sometimes I talk to college Republicans who think that I have terrible policies on the economy, on foreign policy but are very clear that when it comes to same-sex equality or, you know, sexual orientation that they believe in equality. They are much more comfortable with it. You know, Malia and Sasha, they have friends whose parents are same-sex couples. There have been times where Michelle and I have been sitting around the dinner table and we’re talking about their friends and their parents, and Malia and Sasha, it wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently. It doesn’t make sense to them and, frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change in perspective.” What do you about Obama’s support of same-sex marriage? Let us know in the comments!

Tom Gabel’s Transgender News: What Does It Mean For Her Marriage?

Tegan and Sara, Fun., Gaslight Anthem, Senses Fail tweet their support to Against Me! singer. By Gil Kaufman Tom Gabel of Against Me! Photo: Getty Images Against Me! singer Tom Gabel has received an outpouring of support from his musical peers in light of his announcement on Tuesday that he plans to begin life as a woman. His brave decision decision to go public with his transgender status earn praise from fellow musicians including Fun., Tegan and Sara, Senses Fail and Gaslight Anthem. The news came just hours before a vote on Tuesday in North Carolina to pass a constitutional amendment
banning gay marriage, but just before President Obama stated publicly in an ABC interview on Wednesday (May 9) that he personally supports gay marriage. During a cycle that brought highs and lows in the ongoing debate over gay marriage, one of the questions that arose in the MTV Newsroom following Gabel’s news was whether it would have an impact on his wife and their marriage. Though Florida is not one of the six states in the nation that recognize marriages between same-sex partners, Gabel’s declaration won’t change his marital status either way, according to Lisa Mottet, Director of the Transgender Civil Rights Project at the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. “Under established law, marriages are evaluated for their validity at the time of marriage, i.e., the date of the wedding/when the marriage license was signed,” she said. “Only divorces, death, and annulments end marriages — gender transition does not end a marriage, nor convert it to a same-sex marriage. If two people were considered different sex at the time of their wedding, they will continue to be considered married until death, divorce, or annulment.” Gabel came out as transgender and discussed plans to begin living as a woman in the next issue of Rolling Stone magazine. He will now go by the name Laura Jane Grace and remain married to wife Heather, while undergoing electrolysis treatments and taking hormones to make the transition from male to female. “For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news,” Gabel told the magazine about his Heather’s reaction. “But she’s been super-amazing and understanding.” Gabel has dealt with gender dysphoria for years and decided it was a good time to speak up about the private struggle, telling only a few family members and friends about the upcoming transition before talking with the magazine. “I’m going to have embarrassing moments, and that won’t be fun,” Gabel said of coming out. “But that’s part of what talking to you is about — is hoping people will understand, and hoping they’ll be fairly kind.” A number of his peers praised his bravery, including the members of Fun., who tweeted , “Reading about Tom Gabel coming out as transgender = inspiring. Always been a fan but it’s even more amazing to know how strong & brave she is.” Openly gay twin sister rockers Tegan & Sara weighed in also calling Gabel “so incredibly brave.” Congratulations and support also came from the members of Senses Fail, Broadway Calls, Toxicbreed, I Am the Avalanche, Motel Life and Circa Survive. One of the most heartfelt notes was posted by Gaslight Anthem singer Brian Fallon, who preemptively struck out at anyone criticizing the decision. “So Tom’s gonna be Laura now… and in 2012 I still find people on the internet commenting on another person’s life how they insult and condemn a person for his choices,” he wrote. “How about the people who go through this and never find peace and end up committing suicide? Would you rather that? Or maybe he could become a raging drug addict and ruin his life and family? Would you rather that? Or maybe we could have rules from a dictator where everyone gets killed for anything they believe against the government, oh wait, that doesn’t work … How about you leave the guy alone. How about you let another human being make a decision about their lives without your snide prejudices and bigotry? This is one of the hardest decisions a person can make … Whether you agree or don’t, it’s not your life. It’s not your family. It’s not your band, it’s theirs.” And it wasn’t just musicians, as WWE wrestling champ CM Punk also weighed in, writing , “@tommygabel courage and bravery. I got your back.” What do you think of Tom Gabel’s announcement? Let us know in comments below. Related Artists Rise Against

Juelz Santana And Lil Wayne In A ‘Good Space’ For Team-Up Album

Santana tells MTV News he plans to drop his next solo LP Born to Lose, Built to Win later this year. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Juelz Santana Photo: MTV News Juelz Santana and Lil Wayne’s I Can’t Feel My Face LP has been six years in the making and a good number of the tracks have already been leaked onto the Internet, but when fans will get an official version is anyone’s guess. “When Wayne reached out to me at the time I just wasn’t in the position to really do things the right way,” Santana told MTV News at Meek Mill’s 25th birthday bash in Philadelphia. During an interview with MTV’s “Hip Hop POV” host Amanda Seales, Wayne revealed that when he was released from prison in 2010, he hoped he and his buddy Elz could begin new recording sessions for the storied album, but after a January 2011 raid on Santana’s New Jersey studio left him unable to work, Weezy repurposed the beats that intended for Face for his upcoming I Am Not a Human Being II. “At the time my studio had just got shut down, I lost a lot of music so I just had to recuperate,” Elz explained to MTV News. “But I reached out to Weezy, we in a good space.” I Can’t Feel My Face isn’t the only Juelz project that fans have been clamoring for. It’s been seven years since his last solo album, What the Game’s Been Missing! and considering it earned him an RIAA-certified gold plaque, the wait for Juelz’s next LP Born to Lose, Built to Win is quite the head scratcher. But the rapper assured that he’ll have an album out by the end of the year. “I’ll probably drop two mixtapes before the album and we gonna get everything right, we gonna get everything back in the proper perspective where it need to be,” he told MTV News. “When I put out my music it will be well worth the wait, that’s all I can say.” And in case you were wondering about the status of Diplomatic Immunity 3, the long-awaited reunion album with Cam’ron, Jim Jones, Juelz and Freekey Zekey, that idea is still on the table. “Hopefully we gonna get that Diplomat album poppin’,” Santana plugged. “We just want to do that the right way.” Which Juelz Santana album are you looking forward to the most? As he kicks off latest leg of Club Paradise Tour, Drizzy tells MTV News he’s already looking forward to annual hometown show. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Felicia Morris Drake Photo: MTV News The Bay got quite the treat on Monday night when Drake rolled into Concord, California’s Sleep Train Pavilion for the latest leg of his Club Paradise Tour . It was a memorable kickoff for not only Drizzy, but his some of his tourmates, too, as 2 Chainz, Waka Flocka Flame, Meek Mill and French Montana joined him. “I tried to put together a tour that consisted of … everybody that you hear in your spare time,” Drake told MTV News while on the set of 2 Chainz’s “No Lie” video in L.A. just before the tour. “These are the guys that are currently on the top of the game, so I tried to bring ’em all out [for] one night. And that’s why the tour’s called Club Paradise, because I want it to feel like you’re gonna hear every song that you wait to hear in the club.” The Young Money star had a number of surprises. For starters, he brought out his buddy the Weeknd to perform their collabo “Crew Love,” and then he made way for his mentor, Lil Wayne. Together they rocked their Bay-inspired jam “The Motto” — twice. The current leg of the Club Paradise Tour will run through June and will take Drake to some of his favorite cities, including Houston, Atlanta and Las Vegas (or “Houstatlantavegas” as he so affectionately referred to the trio of party towns on his 2009 breakout So Far Gone mixtape). Those stops are special for him although, Drizzy told us he doesn’t get to spend as much time visiting them as he’d like to. “It’s sad because I love those places, so I wanted to bring something real special and I’ve got all these guys looking amazing onstage and set changes for everybody,” Drake said. “It’s gonna be really great.” As focused as he is on the task at hand, however, the Toronto rapper can’t help but look forward to his upcoming third his annual OVO Fest . Last July, Drake brought Stevie Wonder, Weezy, Rick Ross and Nas to perform at yearly hometown concert in Toronto; the year before that he welcomed Jay-Z and Eminem. He isn’t ready to announce the 2012 lineup just yet, but the “Headlines” MC promises a well-rounded mix of musical guests. “The lineup this year is kinda a mash-up of everybody,” Drake said, hinting that some of his Club Paradise collaborators will be in attendance, as well as the Weeknd. “That’s the most important show of the year to me, OVO Fest, so I’m hoping that we really make it special this year. “The premise of OVO Fest is you never know who you gonna see,” he teased.
