Fonzworth Bentley Talks ‘Heavy’ New Song ‘Fireside Chat’

‘I did this song for Black History Month,’ Atlanta MC says of the track. By Shaheem Reid Fonzworth Bentley Photo: MTV Fonzworth Bentley says “knowledge is the new currency” — he wanted to get rebellious and deep on his new song and video “Fireside Chat.” President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his fireside chats to the country in the ’30s and ’40s; Bentley’s “Fireside Chat” talks to the hip-hop community. “It’s kinda heavy for some heads,” Bentley said. “Some kids, it’s gonna be heavy for them. They don’t wanna be reminded they have a responsibility.” Bentley’s song stresses education and community responsibility and calls for more substantial hip-hop music. The video shows montages of images ranging from lynchings of young black men, Rosa Parks and Rush Limbaugh up to the protest in the wake of the Sean Bell shooting. “I did this song for Black History Month and possibly for my EP,” Bentley explained. “Originally I wanted to put it out at the top of Black History Month. I was thinking through things. I was like, Black History Month — first of all, it’s the shortest month. Second of all, we’re gung-ho the first couple of weeks, then towards the end, you don’t hear nothing. Have you heard anything about Black History Month this week? Not at all. I just think that, ultimately for us, in this generation, it’s a time to really reflect and learn something new about yourself. I said if we could just do that, I think that you would be doing yourself a good service. If learn about yourself, you’re going to do what it is you’re supposed to do. You’ll understand you’re standing on the shoulders of somebody else. “The piece was basically a fireside chat to African-Americans, but it was to also hip-hop. Hip-hop was a completely new genre of music. It’s like someone saying, ‘Go home and create a completely new genre of music.’ What? We created a completely new genre of music that is beautiful, ultimately to express ourselves about what was going on in our communities because we didn’t feel we had a voice … we said things to empower the community. To me, that has been missed. The most important words in that piece to me is ‘There’s a lot of folks that die for these rights/ We act like we don’t know it,’ which is at the beginning. Then at the end it is ‘These stripes and stars used to evoke better bars.’ That’s not deniable.” Fonz says he has more inspiring songs in his vaults. “Oh yeah. I went to [Morehouse College], the same school as Martin Luther King Jr,” he said. “I went to the same school as Spike Lee. I went to the same school and Maynard Jackson, the first African-American mayor of Atlanta.” Bentley, signed to Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music label, said he plans to work with ‘Ye in Hawaii very soon. He’s putting The Cool Outrageous Fingerprint EP this summer and his full-length C.O.L.O.R.S. is due later this year. Related Artists Fonzworth Bentley

Radiohead’s Thom Yorke Reveals Side Project Name, Tour Dates

Atoms for Peace feature members of Red Hot Chili Peppers and R.E.M. By Josh Wigler Thom Yorke Photo: Nick Pickles/ WireImage Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has finally unveiled the name of his new side project: Atoms for Peace. The band’s all-star lineup consists of bassist Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers , drummer Joey Waronker of R.E.M. , Brazilian percussionist Mauro Refosco of Forro in the Dark and Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich. “It has been decided that we call ourselves Atoms for Peace,” Yorke wrote on the official Radiohead Web site . “Hope you like the name. It seemed bleedin’ obvious.” Atoms for Peace will embark on a brief tour in April, beginning with two nights at New York’s Roseland Ballroom on April 5 and 6 and concluding with a performance at the Coachella Festival in Indio, California, on April 18. Tickets for Coachella are currently available for purchase, while tickets for the other dates go on sale next week. In October Yorke assembled the members of Atoms for Peace for a two-night concert event at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles, with the intention of performing tracks from his debut solo album, The Eraser, released in 2006. “Yorke is aggressively reaching for the bottom in his own sound,” The Los Angeles Times wrote of that concert. “It wouldn’t be fair to call this music Radiohead Lite, because it wasn’t light at all. But it was more concentrated and, in some ways, more graspable than that group’s work. By appealing to the lower body, Yorke and his band dictated the audience’s focus in ways that Radiohead’s performances don’t.” “We had too much fun to just leave it there,” Yorke said of the upcoming tour. Juvenile Arrested In New Orleans

Rapper arrested on charge of misdemeanor marijuana possession. By Shaheem Reid Juvenile Photo: MTV News Juvenile ‘s time in the studio was interrupted by a trip to jail on Thursday. The New Orleans rapper was in a house that he uses as a recording studio in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, when police stopped by to investigate an anonymous tip that the smell of marijuana smoke was coming from the house. Police say that when they arrived, they could smell the smoke from as far as 10 feet away. When Juvenile’s producer Leroy Edwards, 42, opened the door, the authorities say they were greeted with a cloud. Officers searched Edwards, found marijuana on his person and he was handcuffed immediately. Police detained the other people in the house, including Juvenile, for about two hours while they obtained a search warrant. Once the warrant was executed, officers found a bag containing half an ounce to one ounce of marijuana in the kitchen area. According to the authorities Juvenile, who was eating at the time of the police’s visit, acknowledged that the bag was his personal property. He was arrested after signing a statement. Juvenile (born Terius Gray) does not live in the house. St. Bernard Parish is southeast of New Orleans, and the house where Juvenile was arrested is located in the residential neighborhood of Arabi. Juvenile, who was arrested for marijuana possession in 2008 , and Edwards were taken to jail and booked on charges of misdemeanor possession of marijuana at around 6 p.m. Both were released on bond a little before midnight. The case is scheduled to be handed over to the district attorney’s office for prosecution. Juvenile could not be reached for comment at press time. Related Artists Juvenile

Jay Electronica Talks Upcoming Projects With Nas, Lupe Fiasco

‘You can expect multiple projects this year,’ MC tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Jay Electronica The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive The reception Jay Electronica has been getting from fans during his U.K. tour has been just as enthusiastic as his feedback Stateside. Fans and critics still love “Exhibit C” and some of Jay’s other underground gems. People are clamoring for the street CD Act II and the official LP Act III, and Jay said he’s going to deliver both of those projects and more this year. “It’s still Act II. Act III, the official album, which ‘Exhibit A’ and ‘Exhibit C’ are a part of [as well as] ‘Dear Moleskin,’ ” Jay said in Europe earlier this week. “Me and Mos [Def] have a project that we’re doing, me and Guilty Simpson have a project that we’re doing. I would like to do a project with Lupe — [Fiasco] we’re going to do a project at some point. Me and Nas have a project that we’re doing . I’m just trying. I’m in the process of working and connecting. I don’t really feel like a song or an album is the end-all, be-all to what we’re doing. “You can expect my album this year,” he added. “You can expect multiple projects this year. We’re going to do a lot this year.” Electronica is focused on responsibilities outside of rap, including raising a baby daughter with singer Erykah Badu. “Dealing with a lot personally, that not necessarily takes me away from my music, because it comes through in my music as well. But as a person trying to grow and figure out how to handle things, learn and be a man — all that’s a part of the process too. It’s hard to put a release date on those type of things when you’re factoring those things in.” The New Orleans native said that “Exhibit A” producer Just Blaze will produce 65 percent of his solo debut. Jay’s commanding mic presence and wordplay have captured the ears of many, and he said he has no choice but to come with sustaining lyrics like “I make the devil hit his knees and say, ‘To our father’ ” — he’s a product of his golden-era-of-rap influences. “The lyricism in my music — I come from a different era,” he explained. “I was born in ’76. I was raised in the ’80s. I’m an ’80s baby. LL Cool J was the first person that inspired me to rhyme. I have a lot of bragging in my rhymes. LL was my first enlightenment. If you would have asked me this two years ago, I would have said lyricism was lacking. Like somebody would say Soulja Boy … you would say he’s not a lyricist, right? If you took a poll and said, ‘Is Soulja Boy a lyricist?’ People would say no, right? But it’s not the words, it’s energy of what he does that’s the lyrics. It’s not the lyrics — the energy of it is the connector. The energy of it is greater than the words of it. In a sense, lyrics has been lacking in the contest of grammar and vocabulary, but the spirit and energy of it is never gone — or else the complete genre of hip-hop is gone.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .

John Mayer Thanks Fans For ‘Believing’ In Him At NYC Concert

‘It’s a clean me now, people, clean me,’ he tells Madison Square Garden crowd weeks after controversial Playboy comments. By Dana Kasser John Mayer performs at Madison Square Garden Thursday Photo: Alyssa Scheinson / Splash News NEW YORK — The fans at Madison Square Garden didn’t let a little snow keep them from John Mayer’s sold-out concert on Thursday night (February 25). Mayer has also had some adversity come his way over the past few weeks, after the backlash from his controversial comments in Playboy magazine . Mayer took a moment onstage to thank his fans for believing in him through the uproar. “I hate to come off like an a–hole ever, and thank you guys for believing that I am not an a–hole,” he told the crowd. “Never, ever in my entire life did I ever think that it would be a good idea to be an a–hole. But you know what? There’s plenty of a–holes who think the same thing, so I have to thank you.” Mayer said he’s ready for a fresh start: “It’s a clean me now, people, clean me.” When Mayer wasn’t thanking his fans for braving the elements, he and his five-piece band were rocking out the stage to a set list of songs from his current album, Battle Studies, as well as hits from his past, including “Waiting on the World to Change” and “Your Body Is a Wonderland.” He even succumbed to a section of cheering fans calling out for him to perform “City Love” from his breakthrough 2001 album, Room for Squares. Even if the public isn’t convinced by his numerous apologies , Mayer had the Madison Square Garden concertgoers on their feet from show-opener “Heartbreak Warfare” to his encore — snow boots and all. The singer/songwriter even checked in with the crowd on Twitter after the show: “MSG crowd, will you tweet me when you get home safe? It’s bad out. Oh and HOLY SHNIKES. You were unreal tonight.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: John Mayer Related Artists John Mayer

Adam Lambert Picks His ‘American Idol’ Favorite: Todrick Hall

Last year’s runner-up also tweets support for Casey James and Andrew Garcia. By Hillary Crosley Adam Lambert Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Not one for holding his tongue , “American Idol” alum Adam Lambert tweeted about his favorite contestant of the new season: Todrick Hall . “[Todrick is] def gonna surprise us!! Mad talent!! Def the full package,” Lambert tweeted . And the “Whataya Want From Me” singer didn’t stop before congratulating competitors Casey James and Andrew Garcia as well. “Casey is def the real deal. Authentic. Andrew Garcia’s too,” he added. While each of the contestants has their own strengths, Hall and Lambert come from the same musical-theater background. Lambert brought his performance experience from the Los Angeles cast of “Wicked” to “American Idol.” On the other hand, Hall, a 24-year-old “actor/playwright” from Arlington, Texas, acted beside “Idol” winner Fantasia Barrino in Oprah Winfrey’s “The Color Purple” and was part of the Disney World productions of “High School Musical 2” and “Beauty and the Beast.” Lambert’s Twitter support is also a bit nostalgic, considering “Idol” alumni like Kelly Clarkson joined Team Lambert last year. Season-five finalist Chris Daughtry also put in his two cents about the men on Twitter , simply writing, “Ouch…that’s all,” after Wednesday night’s live-performance show. Lambert’s opinion on Hall didn’t quite match our top 12 men’s report card . Instead, James’ acoustic version of Bryan Adams’ “Heaven” put him on top. We voted Hall’s take on Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone” as satisfactory, but the kid showed guts. Matisyahu Says Olympic Song ‘One Day’ Is ‘A Global Anthem’

‘I wanted to write a song that was an accessible global anthem for hope and peace,’ MC says. By Kyle Anderson Matisyahu Photo: Brian Appio Matisyahu is honest: He’s not exactly the biggest Olympics aficionado. Still, that didn’t stop him from crafting “One Day,” a collaboration with Akon that has been serving as the official anthem of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The song wasn’t written expressly for the games (it first appeared on Matisyahu’s 2009 album Light ), but the themes and goals of the track ended up applying perfectly. “I wanted to write a song that was an accessible global anthem for hope and peace,” the MC told MTV News. “I don’t know exactly how it came about, but somebody heard it and thought it would be a good fit.” Since the start of the games, “One Day” has popped up in a number of places during NBC’s broadcasts, from soundtracking montages to scoring bumpers. The MC even got the opportunity to travel to Vancouver for a few days. While he was there, he felt the positive vibe that has extended to everybody in Vancouver around the games. “I had one moment when we were performing and we were playing ‘One Day’ and I looked out into the crowd and saw all these different flags,” he explained. “Everybody has their flags, and it was a cool a really cool feeling — a utopian kind of feeling.” Even though he doesn’t consider himself much of a Winter Olympics enthusiast, he has plenty of background in some of the biggest sports of the games. “I played hockey growing up and it’s a sport I really enjoy. I also worked on a ski mountain for a few years and got into snowboarding, so I’m something of a winter sports kind of guy,” he said. As a result, he has been deeply invested in the United States’ ongoing improbable run (including their upset victory over Canada). If nothing else, it keeps things interesting while he’s on the road (continuing a tour that will last well into the spring). “Some guys in my band are Canadian, and we all grew up playing hockey, so there’s a friendly rivalry happening.” Related Artists Matisyahu

Lady Gaga, Kate Moss Attend Alexander McQueen’s Funeral

Gaga arrives to the church in London wearing elaborate dress as she pays her final respects to the designer. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga attends Alexander McQueen’s funeral on February 25 Photo: Pacific Coast News Friends and family of the late designer Alexander McQueen gathered in London Thursday (February 25) to pay their final respects to the rebel designer at his funeral, held at St. Paul’s Church. Attendees included Lady Gaga and supermodels Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell. While Moss and Campbell wore touches of eccentric pieces to the funeral that included fur and embellished hats, it was Gaga who arrived in the most eccentric get-up. The pop star, who wore McQueen often and very famously in her in “Bad Romance” video, arrived in a short black dress, her face fully veiled in black lace and the back of her dress tented out with a train. After news broke that McQueen had been found dead in his London apartment on February 11, Gaga tweeted a photo of her and the designer as a remembrance. She later paid tribute to him during her more understated performance at the Brit Awards . During the medley of her songs “Speechless” and “Dance in the Dark” she told the crowd, “This is for Alexander McQueen.” A rep for McQueen’s company spoke to Women’s Wear Daily about the funeral, saying a public memorial is set to take place later this year. No details were given about the when the memorial would take place. “We are focusing right now on the Paris show, which takes place on March 9,” she added. It was announced recently that McQueen’s label will continue , although there have been no details about who will design in McQueen’s place. 50 Cent Sued For Posting Sex Tape During Rick Ross Beef

A Florida woman says 50 unlawfully distributed a video of her during one of his Ross disses. By Gil Kaufman 50 Cent Photo: Rick Diamond/ Getty Images A Florida woman prominently featured in a homemade sex tape posted online by 50 Cent last year as part of his feud with Rick Ross has sued 50 (born Curtis Jackson) in New York City, claiming he unlawfully distributed the video over the Internet. According to The Associated Press, Lastonia Leviston filed the lawsuit on Wednesday in Manhattan, claiming unauthorized use of her name or image and emotional distress caused by the public release of a video she made with an unidentified man in 2008. In the tape, Leviston is seen showing off a tattoo on her chest with the initials “RR,” seemingly in reference to Ross, and 50 is heard providing exaggerated voice-over narration to the action in his wigged “Pimpin’ Curly” persona. In the lawsuit, Leviston claims the rapper posted the video on ThisIs50.com last year, blurring out the face of he man in the tape but not hers, and that 50 edited himself into the video. The New York Daily News, reported that Leviston claims she asked the man in the tape, Maurice Murray, to destroy it. He agreed, but then allegedly either gave or sold it to 50. In addition to airing on 50’s site, the video made it onto YouTube and other video-sharing sites and has been seen millions of times, the suit claims. Leviston also claims that 50 spoke about the video on a radio program and referred to her as a “call girl” in it. A spokesperson for 50 could not be reached for comment at press time. The release of the video was part of a long-running beef between 50 and Ross, which featured a number of dis-heavy mixtape songs , mocking animated videos and a clip in which 50 appeared with Tia Kemp , the mother of Ross’ son, who mocked her former partner.
