Yelawolf’s Hip-Hop Is ‘Heavily Influenced’ By Classic Rock

‘I picked up a lot of classic-rock, melodic influence from my mom, music that she listened to,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Steven Roberts Yelawolf Photo: Ghet-O-Vision Ent. Fire Starter: Yelawolf Gadsden, Alabama, isn’t exactly a hip-hop hotbed, but the small town, just east of Birmingham, might have the ambassador to put it on the map. Yelawolf (born Michael Wayne Atha) has been building quite the buzz with features on Slim Thug’s “I Run” and Juelz Santana’s “Mixin’ My Medicine,” but he’s been grinding for a minute and making a bigger name for himself thanks to his mixtapes, most recently Trunk Music. Yela was raised in Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee by his single mother and was influenced by her musical interests. “I just picked up a lot of classic-rock, melodic influence from my mom, music that she listened to, like 10,000 Maniacs, Led Zeppelin, REO Speedwagon and Yes,” he said. “She was actually dating a dude who was on tour with Aerosmith during the ‘Walk This Way’ tour who brought me back some of my Adidas T-shirts and [a tape of] ‘Paul Revere.’ Beastie Boys, that was my first taste of hip-hop.” Yela eventually decided to pursue a career in hip-hop, but he still loved classic rock. “I equally love both, classic rock and hip-hop. I love all music, really, and I really use classic rock a lot,” he said. “I’m heavily influenced by that melodically in my music. I can’t really separate the two.” Yela said he was also influenced by the grit and grime of the neighborhoods he lived in. For every Lynyrd Skynyrd album, there was a Three 6 Mafia, Skinny Pimp, Outkast or UGK record too. “Where I’m from is like ‘Hustle & Flow’ versus ‘8 Mile.’ It’s that really grimy, box-Chevy, dope-boy, working-class music.” Before breaking through in music, Yela decided to pursue skateboarding. He moved to Berkeley, California, but he eventually found himself at food drives with homeless people. Amid a slew of skating-related injuries, Wolf decided to focus his efforts on rap. He took to the mixtapes. Ball of Flames, his tribute to “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” was the first to come out. Talladega is only 20 minutes from his house. Then he dropped his underground gem, Stereo, with DJ Ideal. The mixtape was a hip-hop tribute to classic rock, and it received five cigars in Ozone magazine (the equivalent of Source ‘s five mics). He followed that up with the EP Arena Rap, which featured a full band, including a fiddle and banjo player. Finally, at the top of the year, came Trunk Music, which showed people he could really rap. “I felt like people were waiting for me to rap, and I was hungry to do it again,” said Yelawolf, who also said he was taking his time with his debut LP. “We had just been experimenting with the band sound. I just was hungry to rap over 808s and high-hats and really just do some double-time drive records. It was just a passion.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Videos Mixtape Daily: Drake, LeBron James, Lil Wayne, More

Black Eyed Peas Turn Up The Energy In NYC With Ludacris, LMFAO

David Guetta joins BEP as a special guest during Madison Square Garden show. By Jayson Rodriguez Will.I.Am and Fergie perform at Madison Square Garden Wednesday Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images Earlier this month, Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.I.Am told MTV News the collective’s The E.N.D. world tour would deliver “things flying and the stage transforming.” Well, the Grammy-winning group’s show came through New York’s Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night (February 24), and the futuristic performance lived up to the hype. From the onset, when the four-person crew entered via platforms underneath the stage, to midway through the set when Will.I.Am freestyled rhymes based on text messages, the Peas put on a concert that was every bit as energetic as their pulsing tracks. As the booming bass of “Let’s Get It Started” drummed up, Apl.de.Ap was the first BEP member to pop up onstage. He was soon followed by Taboo and Fergie. A billowing cloud of smoke enshrouded the stage as Will.I.Am joined his mates, complete with a “Phantom of the Opera”-like mask. “Let’s get it started,” Fergie sang, as lights radiated from the stage into the crowd. “Let’s get it started in here.” The onetime Eazy-E prot

T-Pain, Snoop Dogg, Rick Ross ‘Re-Create’ Atlanta Block Party In ‘Freaknik’

Cartoon premieres March 7 at 11:30 p.m. on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. By Hillary Crosley “Freaknik: The Musical” Photo: Adult Swim T-Pain has a cartoon on the way called “Freaknik: The Musical,” but it’s probably not for kids. The show, airing March 7 on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, will be an hour-long extravaganza detailing a group’s quest to “successfully resurrect the spirit of Freaknik … the biggest spring-break party known to man.” On Wednesday morning (February 24), T-Pain tweeted a trailer including castmembers like Rick Ross and Snoop Dogg discussing the show and remembering their experiences at the original Freaknik. “Back in the ’90s, Freaknik was Atlanta’s version of the ultimate block party. It was Mardi Gras meets spring break, at your crazy cousin’s bachelor party, and anything could happen,” T-Pain said in a statement last month. “A decade later, I’m bringing it back for people like me, who didn’t get to experience it the first time around. We’ve re-created Freaknik’s vibe and energy with amazing animation, new music and an all-star cast of characters.” The Adult Swim cartoon has long been in the works, and T-Pain has recruited everyone from comedians Andy Samberg, Bill Hader and Charlie Murphy to musicians Cee-Lo, Big Boi and George Clinton to lend their voices to the show. Still, with all the good-time nostalgia flying around, some participants like Rick Ross had to be coaxed into joining the “Freaknik” cast. “If it was for anybody else, I wouldn’t even be part of a cartoon,” Ross said. “But because of what Pain told me, he told me we’re doing it uncut, we’re doing it. It turned out to be fun, man, so it’s me, Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne, the list goes on.” Others were more than happy to relive the glory. “I was at the first Freaknik back when it first started in, like, the early ’90s, when it was poppin’. … I was a young rapper, selling CDs and tapes and posters,” Snoop Dogg recalled with a smile. Pain isn’t the first hip-hop star to team up with Cartoon Network. In 2006, Outkast’s Andre 3000 produced “Class of 3000,” an animated series set in Atlanta’s Westley School of Performing Arts. And Danger Mouse and MF Doom released an album and EP — 2005’s The Mouse and the Mask and ’06’s Occult Hymn — that featured beats taken from Adult Swim programming (and more than a few cameos by Adult Swim stars). “Freaknik: The Musical” premieres March 7 at 11:30 p.m. on Cartoon Network. Kanye West’s Greatest Blog Moments

‘Why won’t you let me be great?,’ ‘South Park’ and more all-caps greatness. By Kyle Anderson Kanye West Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Even when he decided to lay low following his interruption of Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the 2009 Video Music Awards, Kanye West has remained connected to his fans and admirers via his blog . In between posts about video premieres, friends’ songs, and looks, books and anything else he’s excited about, Kanye has populated his blog with delightfully sprawling rants about whatever happened to be bothering him on any given day. He has also often responded to criticism in this way, constructing long diatribes that, because they are almost always published in all capital letters, can come across as the rantings of a madman. Kanye launched his long-promised new blog, KanyeWest.com , on Wednesday (February 24), and although at press time it only featured a provocative photo of his girlfriend Amber Rose and his new “Coldest Winter” video (and its relation to his Kanye University site , which includes his blog, remains unclear at press time), it feels like a good time to roll out our favorite Kanye blog moments.

Waka Flocka Flame: ‘I’m Not Into Being Lyrical’

‘I know words — I’m just trying to get crunk,’ MC says. By Shaheem Reid Waka Flocka Flame Photo: MTV News Waka Flocka Flame knows how to ignite controversy. He recently called up to DJ Whoo Kid’s radio and gave his take on microphone wordplay. “I don’t got no lyrics,” Flocka told Whoo Kid and the DJ’s special guest co-host, the staff of XXL magazine. “The n—as who they say is lyrical, they ain’t got no shows … that ain’t finnin’ to get you no money.” Flocka, who has nearly recovered from a robbery in which he was shot last month, stopped by the MTV News offices Tuesday (February 22) and clarified his statements. “They twist that around … I just said personally, me, I’m not into being lyrical,” Waka explained. “I read all the time. I know words. I’m just trying to get crunk. I’m not trying to be off the dome, do a million words in five minutes — I’m not into that. If I’m getting crunk, I’ll start your party. If you got the lyrics, that’s cool. I’m not blocking your party. People say, ‘Go listen to such and such. Get some knowledge.’ I’m like, ‘You wasn’t even born when that person was rocking.’ That’s how it goes. I like lyrical people. You gotta like other music — but me personally, I’m not into that.” “He’s bringing a very na

Lil Jon’s Crunk Rock Features R. Kelly, Game, LMFAO, More

‘It’s literally from one extreme to another,’ Atlanta producer/MC says of sound of upcoming album. By Hillary Crosley Lil Jon Photo: Jason LaVeris/ FilmMagic Lil Jon has announced his long-delayed album Crunk Rock will hit shelves June 8. The album’s release was hampered by a split with his former label TVT Records and the label’s subsequent shuttering. However, the veteran producer/rapper and King of Crunk is back on track through a record deal with Universal Republic. Lil Jon told MTV News that over the last four years of starts and stops, he’s worked with a bevy of artists and during the course of production, his album’s theme began to change. “When I started out doing Crunk Rock I went in [the studio] with lots of different musicians, producers and artists and we did some good things,” he explained. “But as time went on and I started to DJ again and be in the clubs, Crunk Rock took on a different meaning — this is a lifestyle. It’s not all about rock. ‘Crunk rock’ means having a lot of energy, live your life to the fullest, party like a rock star, you not gonna let nobody tell you you can’t do nothing — that’s what ‘crunk rock’ means. On the album you have all kinds of songs representing that [idea] — we have songs with rock guitars but it’s not all about rock music, it’s living the crunk-rock life.” Now artists like The Game, Pitbull, Soulja Boy Tell’em, Ying Yang Twins, R. Kelly, LMFAO, Elephant Man, David Guetta and 3OH!3 are featured on the album. The list of collaborators may look relatively disparate, but to Lil Jon it’s perfect. “There’s so many different kinds of records on [ Crunk Rock ],” Lil Jon said. “It’s really fun to try to take care of all those types of different audiences. After I started DJing again and being in the clubs and traveling the world, I learned to appreciate my fanbase more and my reach. Putting an album together you can make everybody happy and give everybody something.” The Atlanta native said he intends to release several multi-genre singles simultaneously, including perhaps his collaboration with R. Kelly, “Miss Chocolate,” to follow the unofficial first single “Give It All U Got” that leaked late last year. “I’ve got a bunch of different types of records, so we’re going to release a couple at a time so I can touch different people and the records aren’t overlapping each other,” he explained. “It [will be] like I released three singles at once as a first single.” Ultimately, the purveyor of crunk is just excited to finally release his work. “I really can’t wait until the world gets to hear the album in its entirety, digest it and say, ‘Wow, this is the first hip-hop artist I’ve heard to really do some different sh–,” Lil Jon said. “To go from ghetto southwest Atlanta to f—ing Paris, France, to do some sh– with David Guetta, it’s literally from one extreme to another.” Related Artists Lil Jon R. Nicki Minaj Isn’t ‘Rushing’ Her Debut Album

‘I’d love to put an album out this year, but I don’t believe in rushing things,’ Young Money MC says. By Shaheem Reid Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News Nicki Minaj ‘s latest string of guest appearances have garnered her plenty of attention — actress Michelle Trachtenberg even posted a vlog of herself singing Nick’s verse to Robin Thicke’s “Shakin’ it 4 Daddy.” The blogs are also buzzing about her verse (and Freddy Krueger look) in the Ludacris “My Chick Bad” video, as well as her appearance in the Mariah Carey “Up Out My Face” clip. Will these famous collaborators return the favor and jump on Minaj’s debut LP? “I’m sure they will. You know what’s funny — I thinking I’m gonna have more features than I even wanna put on my album,” she told MTV News recently. “I’ve gotten great feedback from artists I look up to and never thought I’d work with. They’re already in line to be on the project. But it’s like, ‘Do I want to put out a debut album with a 1,000 features on it or do I wanna finally showcase Nicki?’ I’m not worried about features at all because I’ve been blessed to come in the game and work with top-notch artists from the inception of my career.” Those guest appearances and her verses on the Young Money album will have to tide her fans over for the time being — she’s just getting around to recording her album. “I’m the very beginning stage of the recording process of my album,” she explained. “I have songs that where I am now, they aren’t a great representation of me to where I’m at musically. I wanna start from scratch but I do have my single and it’ll be out. It’s gonna be ‘Massive Attack.’ “With the album, just like with my mixtape, I never like to rush it,” she added. “With the album, I think it’s more important that people get accustomed to seeing a female rapper again. Before I drop an album, people need to come out and see. People don’t even know what a female rapper does. We’re so not used to seeing it. It’s nonexistent in categories. We don’t get nominated. I need to work [the people] up to accepting a female rapper again and accepting my style and all of that — then the album will come. Honestly, I’d love to put an album out this year, but I don’t believe in rushing things either. We’ll see.” Related Artists Nicki Minaj

Ke$ha Teaches Boys A Lesson (Or Four) In ‘Blah Blah Blah’ Video

She is joined by 3OH!3 in her sassy new clip. By Jocelyn Vena Ke$ha in her “Blah Blah Blah” video Photo: Sony Music While quite a few boys take a liking to Ke$ha , they aren’t always the kinds of guys she’d like to spend time with. And as she makes her way to the bar in the new video for “Blah Blah Blah,” which premiered online Tuesday, she’s already being bothered by one of those unworthy dudes. The video is a rulebook for the right and (mostly) wrong ways to approach the sassy pop star. Lesson #1: If Ke$ha is playing pool and you think that is the right time to flirt with her, she will duct-tape your mouth. Lesson #2: If Ke$ha is busy at the arcade and you think that might be a better time to start a conversation with her, she will eventually just push you and your advances away. Lesson #3: If you think playing acoustic guitar for the singer is the right move to impress her, you’re wrong again. When Ke$ha isn’t teaching boys a lesson or three, she’s singing in a bowling alley, texting her pals about the lack of good men in the world and letting the boys of 3OH!3 put their two cents in about the do’s and don’ts of relationships. Ke$ha, however, teaches the most important lesson of all (#4, for those keeping count) back at the bowling alley, when a man comes over to talk to her. She eventually loses her interest when his toupee falls off. The video’s bottom line: Ke$ha just doesn’t have time for fake guys or their fake hair. Related Artists Ke$ha

Yung Berg Denies Being Robbed

‘I’m fine; I’m good,’ rapper says in video blog dispelling rumors that he was beaten and robbed in L.A. By Jayson Rodriguez Yung Berg Photo: Neilson Barnard/ Getty Images “Sexy Can I” rapper Yung Berg has taken to Twitter and YouTube to dispel rumors that he was beaten and robbed at gunpoint in Los Angeles last weekend. On Wednesday morning (February 24), TMZ reported that the Chicago-born lyricist was “violently beaten” during a house party after four assailants entered the premises. The gossip site said that Berg and another person were attacked, and the suspects made away with $10,000 in chase and jewelry. But police told MTV News on Wednesday that there was no police report on file that mentioned the rapper (born Christian Ward). Berg himself denied the report on Wednesday afternoon (February 24) in a two-minute video blog he posted on YouTube . The rapper looked directly into the camera and displayed no traces of having been assaulted. “I’m fine; I’m good,” he said. “There’s nothing wrong with nobody. I’m still gorgeous. I love you Mom, thanks you for these good genes.” Young Berg’s reps had not responded at press time to an inquiry made by MTV News, but TMZ reported that a rep for the rapper indicated he wasn’t even in California when the crime was allegedly committed. Instead, Berg was in Las Vegas, and in the YouTube clip he says he’s been there recording music. News of the alleged incident made #YungBergsChain one of the top trending topics on Twitter and Yung Berg became a top Google search term. “Shout out to TMZ,” Berg said in his video. “Thank you for the free promo and publicity — it’s just not the right publicity. I wish I was talking about the album or the mixtape.” The rapper has been subject to numerous robbery hoaxes after reported altercations occurred between the upstart artist and Detroit underground act Trick Trick, and after a separate incident involving Maino. But Berg urged his Twitter followers to dismiss the latest rumors. “PLEASE BELIEVE HALF OF WHAT U SEE,” he wrote in all caps. “AND NONE OF WAT U HEAR!!!! : )” Related Artists Yung Berg
