Billy Corgan Explains Relationship With Jessica Simpson

Smashing Pumpkins frontman doesn’t say whether he’s dating Simpson, but they collaborated on TV-show theme song. By Jocelyn Vena Smashing Pumpkin’s Billy Corgan Photo: MTV News Recently, tabloids and gossip blogs have been speculating on whether Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan and pop star Jessica Simpson are an item. The two were spotted in December, and last month of the pair working together in the studio. On Thursday, Corgan opened up to The Chicago Tribune about the reason behind the pairing: Simpson apparently wanted the alt-rock titan to help her write the theme song for “The Price of Beauty,” her forthcoming VH1 show about cultural ideas of attractiveness. “She asked me to help her out on the theme song for her new TV show,” Corgan said. “[The show] has an interesting concept. She goes around the world to show how different people perceive beauty. In some cultures, bigger is better. In some, smaller is better. It’s interesting.” Simpson has dabbled in both the pop and country worlds musically, but it seems that Corgan has been helping her explore her inner rock god. “I ended up writing part of [the theme song],” he told the paper. “It has a little bit of an alternative-rock edge, but it’s still very poppy.” While Corgan was clear about his musical collaborations with Simpson, he was vague about his possible romantic involvement with the pop singer. But he was forthcoming on what it was like to be a focus point of tabloid culture: “The stuff that I’ve seen doesn’t have any bearing to the reality that I’m in,” he said. “It’s like being in a cartoon. It has nothing to do with what’s really going on or how I feel.” Corgan is currently working on the Pumpkins’ Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, a planned 44-track collection he’s gradually releasing over the course of three years via free download from his Web site. Fabolous Back In The Mixtape Game With No Competition 2

‘I don’t see anybody who could even be competition for me,’ Loso tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Fabolous Photo: Def Jam This Week’s Main Pick Street Kings : Fabolous and DJ Drama Holding It Down For : Hip-Hop’s Elite Mixtape Album : The Funeral Service: There Is No Competition 2 Real Spit : “Somebody was saying to me how ‘you killed the game this year. There was really no competition for you,’ ” Fabolous said of his muse for making his latest mixtape. ” The Funeral Service, the title of the mixtape is There Is No Competition, so I played off that like the competition is all dead to me. I don’t see anybody who could even be competition for me. I bump into a lot of people — I’m not gonna drop nobody’s name — but they say, ‘Just stay where you’re at. You’re in a perfect lane. Nobody can do what you do right now as far as being a lyrical dude and one of the guys that all the R&B artists run to to get on joints. It works for you.’ My lane is my lane. As an artist, I think I’ve evolved in my lane too.” Certainly 2009 was a banner year for the Brooklyn bandit. His Loso ways spawned hit records, got critical acclaim and sold well during a SoundScan recession. He also was named one of the Hottest MCs in the Game by the MTV Hip-Hop Brain Trust and probably did more shows in different markets than he’s ever done. So yeah, when he says nobody can compete, he feels it. Loso decided to trumpet his status with a new mixtape after seeing the underground scene make a great resurgence in 2009, with cats like Lupe Fiasco, Lloyd Banks, Cam’ron, Lil Wayne and Drake putting out acclaimed unofficial product. “Those bodies of work, [the artists] are starting to approach them the same way they are making an album,” Fab, standing in Benta’s Funeral Home in Harlem, described. “The mixtape game was becoming a little saturated to me. When I saw Wayne, I told him No Ceilings was dope and he helped show that there is still that pull for the mixtape game. If you put out a good body of work, people are going to go to it. “I had stopped doing the mixtapes because I felt we lost that,” he added. “Between DJs slopping together tapes just to make tapes and some artists really just putting two or three [new] songs together and a bunch of old songs and throwing a mixtape out. Certain DJs making unofficial tapes where they are just grabbing leaked stuff or taking stuff and putting it over other beats. I thought the game got saturated, but in ’09 and recently at the top of ’10, you seen Cam drop joints. Wayne dropped a joint, of course, Drake’s mixtape being infamous for being one of the best ones for ’09. It put the fuel back in me to do the mixtape thing. I was focused on a whole ‘nother agenda. Just having so many shows took my mind off of it.” Fab’s tape is a mixture of original songs and songs done over other MCs beats. Some of the tracks you’ll recognize on the tape are “Say Something,” “Popular Demand,” “Roger That,” “Cigar Music,” and the Swizz Beatz and Shyne collaboration “Shyne.” Joints To Check For

Justin Timberlake Isn’t ‘Running From’ Next Solo Album

‘I find that when [inspiration] comes up … it comes up like a freight train,’ singer says of ideas for new music. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Tim Kash Justin Timberlake Photo: MTV News At his latest William Rast fashion show, Justin Timberlake admitted there is a “blatant correlation” between music and fashion — however, for the time being, Timberlake is more focused on the clothes and less worried about putting out new music. He hasn’t put out a solo album since 2006’s FutureSex/LoveSounds, but he said he isn’t going to force the tunes out. “You know, music is … music exploration, I find that when it comes up … it comes up like a freight train,” he said. “So when it does, I definitely won’t run from it.” However, the bottom line is that Timberlake has no plans to release his own new music anytime soon. In addition to his fashion empire, he’s also busy promoting acts on his Tennman label, like Esm

LMFAO’s Sky Blu Was Other Man In Mitt Romney’s Plane Fight

Party rocker says the former Massachusetts governor started the scuffle. By Gil Kaufman LMFAO’s Sky Blu (file) Photo: Steven Lawton/ FilmMagic To date, the only party the members of LMFAO appear to support is the one that starts with shots and ends with being passed out on the floor in a heap of spandex neon tights and bikini tops. But group member Sky Blu made news on Monday for getting into a scuffle with former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. When news first broke that Romney had gotten in a fight on a plane, the identity of the other man wasn’t revealed. On Thursday, however, TMZ reported that it was none other than Sky (born Skyler Gordy), half of the “Party Rock” duo. According to the site, Blu claims that despite initial reports that he became “physically violent” first after Romney asked him to put his seat up, it was the former Massachusetts governor who started things. After hanging with MTV News’ Sway in Vancouver at the Winter Olympics over the weekend, LMFAO boarded a flight to Los Angeles. And according to Blu’s account of the incident in a video posted on TMZ , he was tired, put his new “Party Rock” jacket over his face and leaned his coach seat back while the plane was still on the ground. That’s when Romney began yelling at him to put the seat upright. “I’m trying to just adjust myself so I can go to sleep,” Blu said. “I just hear this guy, he’s, ‘Sir, sir, put your seat up!’ I thought it was a flight attendant at first … and he says again, ‘Sir, put your seat up!’ A little louder and more angry towards me.” If Romney had asked nicely, Blu said he might have put his seat up, but since he was so rude … Well, next thing you know, Blu said Romney reached out and put his hand on his shoulder and asked him again to put his seat up. Blu said he knocked Romney’s hand away, thinking nothing of it. “His wife screams. … They’re getting loud, so then the flight attendant comes over, and I try to get louder than them to plead my case. ‘No, the man assaulted me! I was protecting myself!’ I might have thrown a few cuss words in there.” In the video, air marshals are seen escorting Blu off the plane. He said they diffused the situation and though the police detained him for a minute, he was not arrested but given a ticket for the next flight out. “I have no hard feelings toward him,” Blu said. “I’m sure he’s a good dude.” And while Blu, an avowed Democrat, said he would not vote for Romney, he admitted he might get a drink with the Mormon politician … if he drinks. Spokespeople for LMFAO and Romney could not be reached for comment at press time. Related Videos This Week’s Biggest News Related Artists Lmfao

Jay-Z: President Obama Was Playing The Blueprint When I Called Him

‘I’ve been invited to the White House a couple of times,’ Hov tells the BBC. By Jayson Rodriguez Jay-Z Photo: Gareth Cattermole/ Getty Images Jay-Z has dropped Barack Obama’s name in his rhymes, and Obama referenced Jay’s lyrics when he dusted his shoulder off during a campaign appearance before he ascended to the White House. But it turns out the pair have more than just a passing appreciation for rhetorical flourishes. In an interview with Jonathan Ross airing on the BBC Friday (February 19), Jay-Z revealed that the president has invited the rapper to the White House a number of times since Obama’s inauguration. “I’ve been invited to the White House a couple of times,” Hov told Ross , although he said he hasn’t taken up the president on the offer just yet. “Hopefully we’ll keep him in for eight years, so I’ll have time to get there.” The Brooklyn MC was an avid supporter of Obama during the presidential campaign and referenced him in a series of lyrics, most notably for Young Jeezy’s hit “My President.” “Rosa Parks sat so Martin Luther could walk/ Martin Luther walked so Barack Obama could run/ Barack Obama ran so all the children could fly,” he raps on the track. “So I’mma spread my wings/ You could meet me in the sky.” “It’s just the progression. … You sat, you walked, you ran, you ran to fly,” Jay told MTV News about his Obama rhyme last year on the eve of the inauguration. “You know, just the progression and how far we’ve come as a nation. It feels good to say that, ’cause I never had that type of feeling to say ‘as a nation,’ like I was part of the American dream. And I believe a lot of people didn’t feel like a part of the American process for so long.” Although Obama has professed a love for an eclectic playlist of music that includes Stevie Wonder and Bob Dylan, he also said he is a fan of Jay-Z. Jay-Z confirmed Obama’s admiration when he told Ross the president was playing one of the rapper’s albums when answered a phone call from Hov. “Barack loves hip-hop,” Jay said. “When I called him he was playing [The] Blueprint in the gym.” Related Artists Jay-Z

Jay-Z Wants To Shoot Two More Videos From Blueprint 3

However, he says he probably will not film one for ‘Stranded (Haiti Mon Amour).’ By Shaheem Reid Jay-Z Photo: MTV News “On to the Next One” is Jay-Z ‘s current single, but that doesn’t mean he’s ready to move past his latest hit LP, The Blueprint 3. Hov said he’s thinking about two more videos from his opus. “I wanna shoot ‘Venus vs. Mars,’ ” he told MTV News last weekend in Dallas. “I may shoot two — I shot ‘Run This Town’ [and ‘D.O.A. (Death of Auto Tune)’] , I been shooting two at the same time. I’ll probably shoot ‘Venus’ and maybe ‘A Star Is Born.’ But I definitely wanna shoot ‘Venus’ — I got an amazing concept in my mind.” However, he said he doesn’t think he’ll shoot a clip for “Stranded (Haiti Mon Amour),” which he, Rihanna and members of U2 performed during MTV’s “Hope for Haiti Now” telethon. “I don’t think there will be a video,” he explained. “The number is ridiculous as far as the [money generated by the Hope For Haiti Now ] album . I’m excited about the whole effort we put into the telethon. I don’t think it’s entertainment, I think it’s a real thing. It’s helping real people through a real tough time, and we’ll just move on from there.” While out in Dallas for the NBA All-Star Game, Jay also told MTV News that he wasn’t sure when a new album is coming, but he did have one song for it already. “I don’t know,” he said. “I didn’t really start yet. I got a couple of scraps and I got a couple of ideas. I didn’t really go into the studio yet. I’ve been toying with ideas and direction and things like that. “I got one crazy record,” he added. “To be honest with you, it’s crazy. I got one and we’ll build from there. Whether it comes out this year or next year, it depends on the music and how it’s coming out. I don’t really have any dates.” Related Artists Jay-Z

Jermaine Dupri Says New Janet Jackson Song Is ‘A Good Record’

‘Y’all haven’t heard her sound like this in a long time,’ producer says of Jackson’s tune for the ‘Why Did I Get Married Too?’ soundtrack. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Shaheem Reid Janet Jackson and Jermaine Dupri Photo: Jim Spellman/ WireImage Jermaine Dupri recently told MTV News he had produced a new Janet Jackson song for the upcoming Tyler Perry film in which the singer also stars, “Why Did I Get Married Too?” According to the So So Def boss, the track is slated to be the first single from the movie’s soundtrack — the film is scheduled to arrive in theaters April 2. “I watched the movie with [Jackson and Perry] and it’s incredible,” Dupri said. “I’m not married but married people go through what I seen in this movie. I think Tyler hit it on the head again. But the song is perfect for the movie and it’s a good record.” The producer was tight-lipped about the track, only revealing that the title was “Nothing.” He promised, however, that the song will showcase a Jackson that fans haven’t seen in a while. “I can say this — y’all haven’t heard her sound like this in a long time,” he teased. Jackson is currently working on her next album, one that Rodney Jerkins told MTV News would be more emotional that her past efforts. “You gotta understand, she lost her brother,” Jerkins said. “She was in a relationship for seven years [with Jermaine Dupri] that’s over now. There’s things that she told me that I didn’t even realize. You know, certain [things] like self-esteem that I didn’t even realize that she dealt with for years that, you know. … She’s working on her book and she’ll deal with that in her book, but also in songs, certain songs we’re dealing with that head on. And sometimes it can be a touchy subject for us to even go into, and I kinda had to persuade her, ‘Let’s just go, let’s talk about that.’ And she’s been doing it, and she’s a pro about it.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Why Did I Get Married Too?” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Paramore’s ‘The Only Exception’ Director ‘Super Proud’ Of Video

‘This video turned out so perfect,’ director Brandon Chesbro says of the clip. By Kyle Anderson Paramore’s Hayley Williams Photo: Warner Music Group The new video for Paramore ‘s latest single “The Only Exception” — which premiered on the band’s Web site on Wednesday (February 17) — is by far the most visually interesting and complex clip the group has ever produced. So it’s a little bit surprising to find out that the video’s director, photographer Brandon Chesbro, counts “The Only Exception” as his first foray into music-video direction. “I’ve been working with [Paramore] for two years, but this is my first music video for anybody,” Chesbro told MTV News on the phone from Australia, where he is currently on tour with the band. “I went to film school, so I was prepared for all the cameras and gear, but it was still pretty intimidating.” Chesbro has worked closely with the band before, shooting the documentary “40 Days of Riot! ” that appeared on the group’s “The Final Riot!” DVD and filming a doc chronicling the making of the group’s latest effort Brand New Eyes. But the plan for him to helm a video has been in the works for a while. “I didn’t want to do ‘Ignorance’ because it was the first single and it was too big and important,” he explained. “When I heard the idea and the concept for ‘Brick by Boring Brick,’ I said I didn’t want to do that because it was going to be blue screen and really scary.” Despite the complexity of the video, the whole process was remarkably efficient. “They asked me to do ‘Exception’ in December, and I’ve been working on ideas and storyboards since then — but the whole production only took four days,” he explained. “We built the set, got all the props, shot it, edited it and wrapped it up. Usually you take a few weeks to edit, but I knew exactly what Hayley and I wanted, so it was a crazy-insane-simple-perfect process.” Casting was also straightforward. The guy playing Hayley’s dad in the clip is her actual dad and the guy who shares the couch with Williams is a friend of the director. Roadblocks were few and far between, but a huge snowstorm in Nashville nearly derailed the shoot because the rest of the band couldn’t get to Los Angeles, where Chesbro and Williams had already set up shop. “We ended up having to change the schedule around, and for a while we didn’t think they would make it, but it turned out fine,” he said. Chesbro is most proud of the clip’s key scene: an overhead shot of Williams laying down on a pile of Valentine’s Day cards that were made by fans of the band. Williams dreamed up the shot and tapped the fans to contribute cards. “In two days we got 500 cards,” he said. “The band has crazy fans. All those cards are so detailed — these kids spent serious time on these cards. That’s my favorite shot of the whole video. It was the first thing we shot and I thought that if something falls apart and we only have that one shot, that could be the video all by itself and it’d be perfect.” While on the road with the band, he’s stockpiling footage for a yet-to-be-determined video project. “I don’t know if we’re necessarily working on a DVD, but we like to have a lot of content,” Chesbro said. “We have two ideas that we’re playing around with, so we’re just stockpiling footage right now.” In the meantime, will we see his director’s credit appearing more frequently? “I’d really like to do more videos now,” he said. “This video turned out so perfect that I’m worried nothing else will turn out as good. But if this is my only video, I was super proud to be a part of it.” Related Videos MTV News RAW: Paramore Related Photos MTV Unplugged: Paramore Related Artists Paramore
