Lil Wayne More Than Answers Mac Miller’s ‘Question’

‘I wanted to make sure I got Wayne on something that was heartfelt,’ Mac tells MTV News of Macadelic standout. By Rob Markman Mac Miller Photo: MTV News Mac Miller hasn’t been around very long, but his ever-growing catalog has a lot of noteworthy tunes. The gold-selling “Donald Trump” is a crowd-pleaser at shows, as is his jump-up-and-down party-starter “Knock, Knock.” But Mac’s recent Lil Wayne collaboration “The Question” already ranks right up there for him. “This is one of my favorite records that I’ve ever done,” Mac told MTV News of the Macadelic standout. Miller surprised fans when he released Macadelic last week. It wasn’t the quality of songs that stood out — Mac’s fans have come to expect the best from the Pittsburgh MC — instead it was Macadelic ‘s features that stood out to many. With a guest list that includes Kendrick Lamar, Sir Michael Rocks, Casey Veggies, Juicy J and Cam’ron, it was Weezy’s multiplatinum name that made folks do a double-take. Getting Weezy on your mixtape is a no-brainer for any MC with enough clout to pull it off, but Miller didn’t want to get the Young Money boss on just any old track. To him, “The Question” was special. “This song is a real meaningful song to me, man, and I wanted to make sure I got Wayne on something that was heartfelt,” he said. “I got him on a record that I was saying something and not just talkin’ sh–, so this record right here really kinda deals with a question that I’ve been goin’ through in my own head.” “Sometimes I wonder who the f— I am,” Mac spits to start the record off. The 20-year old MC then goes on to ponder his place in the world over a slow-rolling track produced by Wally West and ID Labs. “I feel like in a lot of people’s lives, at a certain point, you kind of just look in the mirror and try and think about who I am as a person and what am I supposed to do here, what am I doin’ with my time,” he explained. Often, Mac is criticized for releasing strictly party records, but on “The Question” he adds some depth to his catalog. Weezy, however, took a different approach, opening his rhyme while sitting in his Bentley, thinking about the plethora of women he has at his disposal. From there, Tunechi goes on about his machine gun, which he claims to treat like an infant, and, of course, his smoke. It’s classic Weezy. “Wayne came in and just killed the verse on the song,” Mac exclaimed. “It was perfect to hear him like that.” What do you think of Mac Miller and Lil Wayne’s “The Question”? Steve Angello Proves ‘Size’ Matters As Miami Music Week Wraps

Size Records label head packs his lineup with all-star beatsmiths like Max Vangeli, AN21 and Junior Sanchez at closing show. By Sam Hendrick and Akshay Bhansali Tim Mason performs at the Fountainbleu in Miami on Sunday Photo: MTV News MIAMI — As Miami Music Week wrapped up, MTV News went back to where it all began, heading again to the Fontainebleau on Sunday for another massive record-label showcase. Swedish House Mafia stalwart Steve Angello , joined by the brigade of ferocious all-stars that make up his Size Records, took over the same stage that deadmau5 and his Mau5trap crew owned just a day before. But while the Mau5strap set inspired fans through experimental sonic patterns, Size came with one mission in mind: To lay down banger after banger, many of them Beatport.com -charting hits produced by members of the Size team. The third edition of the always highly anticipated Size Records party featured proven beatsmiths — some EDM vets, some newcomers. Indeed, Angello presided over a staggering lineup that included Max Vangeli, AN21, Junior Sanchez, Third Party, Tim Mason, Qulinez and Wayne & Woods. Size newbies Wayne & Woods kicked off the night. The duo were followed by Qulinez, who delivered an impressive set highlighted by their smoldering bomb “Troll.” Tim Mason pleased the crowd by covering hit singles “The Moment” and “Anima”; Third Party took over from him with a strong set that featured their 2011 smash “Duel” and their newest single, “Feel.” Feeling a bit of hometown nostalgia, MTV News was excited to see the return of legendary New York house icon Junior Sanchez to the Size closing party. The Brobot boss kept the hands in the air for virtually his entire set, playing recent anthems like Otto Knows’ “Million Voices” and the Dirty South/ Usual Suspect collabo “Walking Alone.” Junior also drew smiles from the crowd with his unique blend of Jay-Z and Kanye’s “N—as in Paris” and Swedish producer Avicii’s “Levels,” a mash that was appropriately titled “N—as in Sweden.” Coming on last (but certainly not least) on the long list of talented openers were Max Vangeli and AN21, who were greeted with the energy one might expect for two of Size’s original signees. Showing no signs of nerves, the pair put on a set fit to introduce their label’s frontman. They doled out heavy party tracks like Dada Life’s “Kick out the Epic Mother—-er”. Sir Steve finally hit the decks, and partygoers at the Fontainebleau bum-rushed the stage, eager to rock out with the Size boss. And Angello obliged, unleashing track after track by tapping his SHM arsenal and much more. Fans danced in fits to Swedish House Mafia’s “Greyhound”; Michael Calfan’s “Resurrection” fused with Cold Play’s “Paradise”; and Nari & Milani “Atom,” among other hits. Angello just smiled, seemingly well aware of the euphoric chaos he was creating. Unfortunately, Angello was forced to cut his set short at around 11:30 p.m. Still, what fans will probably remember is that the Size guys came correct this year, laying down the perfect ending to Miami Music Week. Miley Cyrus, Liam Hemsworth Not Engaged

‘I’m not engaged. I’ve worn this same ring on this finger since November!’ Cyrus tweeted on Monday in response to rumors. By Christina Garibaldi Miley Cyrus at her Pilates class in Beverly Hills Photo: Splash News Miley Cyrus is putting those engagement rumors to rest. On Monday (March 26), the Internet was abuzz that Cyrus and her “Hunger Games” star boyfriend Liam Hemsworth were going to tie the knot after photos surfaced of her wearing a large sparkler on her ring finger. I’m not engaged. I’ve worn this same ring on this finger since November! People just wanna find something to tal about! It’s a topaz people! — Miley Ray Cyrus (@MileyCyrus) March 26, 2012 But Cyrus took to Twitter on Monday to shoot down the rumors, saying, “I’m not engaged. I’ve worn this same ring on this finger since November! People just wanna find something to [talk] about! It’s a topaz people!” Speculation began last week after Cyrus tweeted a photo of her new manicure and the ring. Most recently, she was spotted sporting the large stone on Saturday as the two posed for pictures on the red carpet at Muhammad Ali’s Celebrity Fight Night XVVIII in Phoenix. Even though they won’t be planning a wedding anytime soon, the couple, who have been dating on and off since 2009, have a lot to be excited about. “The Hunger Games” had the third-biggest opening weekend of all time, beating out all of the “Twilight Saga” movies when it raked in $155 million. Hemsworth and Cyrus will next be seen together on an upcoming episode of MTV’s “Punk’d,” where the former “Hannah Montana” star tells her boyfriend that two naked people have locked themselves in her car, a prank Hemsworth doesn’t seem to be too fond of. “I knew she was doing the show. I honestly thought she had enough respect for me not to do me, and she got me really good,” Hemsworth recently told Ellen DeGeneres. “Your girlfriend comes running around and she’s yelling hysterically and you see two naked people in your car… I think my instincts were pretty right.” Related Artists Miley Cyrus

‘Hunger Games’ Rakes In $155 Million At Box Office

‘Games’ had third-highest opening ever, beating out all ‘Twilight Saga’ movie openings and every non-sequel ever made. By Ryan J. Downey Josh Hutcherson in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate Much like Katniss Everdeen herself, “The Hunger Games” ‘ aim was true. When it comes to box-office records, it’s hard to keep a good book down. “The Hunger Games” beat all of the “Twilight Saga” movies and every single non-sequel ever with the third-biggest opening weekend of all time. The big-screen adaptation of the first novel in the massively popular young adult trilogy collected $155 million domestically, a figure that was just $3.4 million less than “The Dark Knight” opening in 2008. (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” is still #1 with $169.1 million). Audiences gave the movie a CinemaScore of “A.” “The Hunger Games” collected an estimated $19.7 million in midnight screenings alone. Librarians, academics and bookworms of all stripes should note that all of the movies in the top five “all-time” list are based on some sort of printed source material. “Potter,” “Dark Knight,” “Hunger Games,” “Spider-Man 3” ($151 million) and “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” ($142 million) were, of course, all drawn from either novels or long-running comic book characters. “The Hunger Games” made another $59.3 million overseas, which is about on par with the debuts of the opening installments in both the “Twilight” and “Harry Potter” franchises. The next installment in author Suzanne Collins’ trilogy, “Catching Fire,” will see its film adaptation arrive in November of next year. But “Hunger Games” star Jennifer Lawrence will be back in theaters well before that. The 21-year-old Oscar nominee’s new horror flick, “House at the End of the Street,” is due September 21. MTV News will exclusively unveil the full trailer for the movie online this Thursday morning. The latest from “Hush” director Mark Tonderai will see Lawrence in a role much different than skilled archer Katniss Everdeen, as she’ll play a high school student who gets tangled up with a guy who has very dark secrets. “House” had an estimated production budget of $7 million for Relativity Media, which is standard issue for the genre. That’s quite a bit less than the $78 million Lionsgate spent on “The Hunger Games,” but the indie studio surely isn’t sweating that number: It’s already the biggest movie on record for the home of the “Saw” franchise. “The Hunger Games” had an 85 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes at press time, which is exactly the same as last weekend’s #1 film, “21 Jump Street.” The comedically driven movie version of the earnest late ’80s TV drama about cops who went undercover in high schools was #2 this week with $21.3 million, for a total of $71 million. “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax,” which enjoyed the eighth-highest debut for an animated movie earlier this month, was #3 with $13.1 million and a $177.3 million total. “John Carter” was #4 with $5 million for a $62.3 million total, and “Act of Valor” rounded out the top five with $2 million for a $66 million total. Although those totals are similar, “John Carter” carried a reported production budget of $250 million while “Valor” was made for $12 million. Steve Aoki Brings The Heat To Miami’s Ice Palace

Dim Mak chairman had help from EDM pals Datsik and Alan Strovich as he powered through a set loaded with new gems. By Nicholas Philippou Steve Aoki performs at Ice Palace in Miami on Saturday Photo: Luis Duran/ othersidesounds MIAMI — The Steve Aoki Experience hit Ice Palace in downtown Miami a little after 3:30 a.m. in the early Saturday hours, and the Dim Mak chairman didn’t disappoint. He powered through a set loaded with new music and the madness that fans have come to love from his live shows. In the lead-up to his Ultra Music Festival show slated for Sunday (March 25), Aoki treated the Ice Palace crowd to champagne showers and shots of Grey Goose. He also brought along some very special friends: Datsik, who’ll hit the road this summer on Dim Mak Records’ Deadmeat Tour ; and Alan Strovich, who recently finished a dramatic dubstep remix of “Ladi Dadi.” (One of Aoki’s biggest tracks, his 2011 “Ladi” features singer Wynter Gordon.) Many of the tracks Aoki played on Saturday were from Dim Mak’s Miami Winter Music Conference sampler, which dropped 10 days ago on Beatport . Those included the banging new gems “Dance” from Spencer & Hill and Dirtyloud; “Turn Up the Volume” with Joachim Garraud and Autoerotique; and Aoki’s smash tag-team with Ti

deadmau5 Baits Miami Music Fans With Ear-Bending Set

The poolside Mau5trap party kicked off Saturday night with assists from Feed Me, Moguai, Steve Duda and Frederik. By Sam Hendrick deadmau5 performs at Fontainebleau in Miami on Saturday Photo: Sam Hendrick/ MTV News MIAMI — Another day, another party. A slightly sunburned MTV News crew hit the highly anticipated Mau5trap pool party at the Fontainebleau on Saturday night, where we found Mau5heads had come out in full force to support the boss himself, deadmau5 , and his cohorts during a poolside set. Don’t be fooled, however, it’s Miami Music Week and this wasn’t your parents’ pool party: Fontainebleau boasts a pool deck that would make most of your favorite Vegas hotspots look like the neighborhood YMCA. Add a DJ booth inlaid within a colossal LED wall, and you’ve set the scene for the Mau5trap Records party headlined by deadmau5, with support from labelmates Feed Me, Moguai, Steve Duda and Frederik. Frederik and Duda started strong, warming up the crowd for Moguai. The German producer/DJ introduced himself with his remix of Fatboy Slim’s “Ya Mama” and an electro rendition of the Nena classic “99 Red Balloons.” Keeping consistent with the heavy synths of the signature Mau5trap sound, Moguai passed the torch to Feed Me, who continued to bring up the energy of the evening. The U.K. outfit mellowed out dirty riffs of songs like “Green Bottle” with the soothing vocals of Lindsay on “Embers.” In fact, one fan was so moved by Feed Me’s transition that he started a solo splash-fight in the football field-size pool … perhaps in search of deeper enlightenment? After a proper warm-up, it seemed only fitting that deadmau5 would take the stage to end the night with a bang. But from the start, it seemed clear he had another agenda. The man born Joel Zimmerman followed a long intro of experimental drum loops with a Mau5y version of Milo’s “Dr. Pressure” and 2 Live Crew’s “Shake That Ass Bitch,” signaling he wouldn’t be mixing his typical set. Instead, for the next hour, he took the audience on a tour of the inner workings of his creative mind and treated them to a showcase of his Ableton mastery. Those who came to rage with the mau5 may have been left staring at a half-full bottle of Grey Goose, but judging from the vibe of Zimmerman’s set (and recent style postings on his SoundCloud page), the DJ/producer is obviously in a different place than he was in his “Ghost” days (although did play the track for partygoers at the end of the night). Swedish House Mafia’s Fiery Masquerade Motel Welcomes 10,000 Guests

EDM trio kick off explosive two-day fest at Miami Music Week with help from heavy-hitting openers like Thomas Gold and Calvin Harris. By Akshay Bhansali Fans at Ultra Music Festival 2012 Photo: Getty Images MIAMI — On Friday, Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso and Steve Angello — the trio also known as Swedish House Mafia — gave fans at Miami Music Week an event to remember. Their two-hour-plus spectacle at Grand Central Park featured stadium-style house music with a backdrop of pyrotechnics and fireworks. Add to that the dazzling graphics bouncing off five enormous LED screens, and it was clear that SHM had accomplished an impressive high mark that won’t be easy match on Saturday night (March 24), when the event kicks off its second day. MTV News caught up with the Swedes just before their set and they talked to us about the long road to their massively successful Masquerade Motel mini-festival. “We’ve done it again,” Angello raved. “For [us], to go out there and enjoy our own party, which is something like this [in scale], it’s amazing to be here.” Last year’s tented, single-day Masquerade party on South Beach “was amazing,” Angello added, “And the year before that was amazing; we’ve come a very long way.” Lined with palm trees, tall office buildings and residential apartments, Grand Central Park had the vibe of being isolated from the rest of Miami, and that made a party filled with 10,000 SHM fans feel intimate. But before the trio even took the stage, a spectacular lineup of opening acts did more than warm up the crowd. Asked about the all-stars preceding them, Seb, Ax and Steve beamed with pride. “We have NO_ID,” Axwell said of the Dutch duo newly signed to his Axtone Records imprint. “We just think that they have a really interesting sound, which is kind of like chunky-groovy-sexy house, so it complements what we are doing very well. Otto Knows is also here. “[Otto is] a young kid from Sweden, one of my really close friends,” Ingrosso chimed in. “He’s like my little brother. We are starting to make music and he just released his first single ever. “Thomas Gold is here,” Axwell added. “Alesso, a guy called Calvin Harris . “Yeah, I don’t know if you know him,” Ingrosso chuckled with a knowing nod to Harris’ accolades on the EDM scene and, most recently, for his work with Rihanna. “Yeah, he’s another guy we found,” Angello joked. “No, Rihanna found him!” Axwell laughed. “He’s always been very interesting and doing creative stuff. By the time the Swedes took their positions behind the decks, it was clear 10,000 screaming fans were ready to take the party to the next level. Just as they’ve done on their last two Stateside Masquerades, they launched into the organ-laden edit of Ax & Sebastian’s “Together”; they followed that with latest hit single, “Greyhound,” marking the song’s drop with a fireworks display. What followed was a clever series of mixes of some of the most popular anthems of the last six months. Among them were Axwell’s edit of Michael Calfan’s “Resurrection” mixed into Fedde Le Grand’s remix of “Paradise,” and “Antidote,” which was given a pyro burst. The crowd went mental when Dirty South and Usual Suspects’ “Walking Alone” was blended perfectly with SHM’s “Miami 2 Ibiza” “That’s right, Miami, it is straight appreciation for ‘Miami 2 Ibiza,’ ” Ax told the crowd. “We realize that are a lot of parties this week and we definitely feel honored that you’ve come to us this week!” SHM also treated fans to set staples, including “Troll” ; Nari & Milani’s “Atom”; Ingrosso, Alesso and Ryan Tedder’s “Calling (Lose My Mind)”; Deniz Koyu’s remix of “Dangerous”; and SHM’s remix of Coldplay’s “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall.” “Are you making new friends?” Axwell asked the partygoers. “Maybe some from the opposite gender? Maybe falling in love? For sure, we are falling love. The Swedish House Mafia loves you guys. Thank you for coming down!” But one of the most unexpected gems of the night came at the very end, when fans got to hear a cook-up Axwell told MTV News in our pre-set chat that he couldn’t wait to play: The SHM/Laidback Luke collabo “Leave the World Behind” (featuring Deborah Cox) was merged with Knife Party’s remix of Porter Robinson’s “Unison.” That mashup was received with a roar from the crowd as the high-energy dance party became another one for the books. NO_ID, Third Party and AN21 join Alesso and Calvin Harris as openers for Swedish House Mafia on the second (and final) day of the Masquerade Motel on Saturday. Madonna: Does The Queen Still Wear The Crown?

Above the Buzz weighs Madge’s MDNA against the recent releases of the new millennium’s biggest pop princesses. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna Photo: Getty Images There’s a reason she’s called the Queen of Pop. Madonna ‘s managed to write and rewrite the pop playbook over and over (and over) again for three decades. She’s captivated and empowered young women to grow up to become whatever it is they want to be. (I’m one of them.) When others have come and gone, Madonna has remained relevant. She’s influenced others and, yes, even herself (see her new video for “Girl Gone Wild” ). With her latest album release, MDNA, just days away from dropping, the big question that some might be wondering is: Does she still have it? Can she still make an album that breaks ground, sets trends and sounds uniquely like Madonna? Well, yes. Like Madonna albums before it, MDNA seeks to explore just how imperfect love is and the cruelty of heartbreak. There’s no sign of Dr. Luke, Ryan Tedder, Tricky Stewart, The-Dream, Max Martin or any other producers this generation of pop princesses call upon when they need that perfect Top 40 club banger. If Madge had called on those guys, well, that would have been reductive . Over the last 12 months, seemingly every one of today’s pre-eminent female singers has released new music, and all of it has been dance music (well, not Adele). So, now it seems as good a time as any for Madonna to capitalize and redirect the conversation to her, because when it comes to dance pop, it all comes back to her anyway. Larry Rudolph explained last year that he felt that Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale was her Ray of Light, recalling Madonna’s fan-cherished 1998 album, on which she explored trippy electronica with the help of William Orbit . (Orbit, as it turns out, is back for more on MDNA. ) But can anything really be Ray ? FF relied on the electronic sounds of Ray to reclaim Brit’s place on the dance floor but never delved into the lyrical depths that Madge’s album did. Then there was Lady Gaga and Born This Way. Its lead single certainly paid homage to Madge’s own “Express Yourself,” and the dark and industrial sound that made up much of BTW harked back to the sounds that Madonna has explored throughout her career. Her influence was certainly felt as Gaga sang about sex and love in different languages over grinding beats. But, Gaga and her team seemed to take too many on-the-nose cues from her kindred pop spirit. Madonna’s influence on pop is no better boiled down to these two women and their music. They show the two sides of the singer: the light-hearted, glitter-wearing disco queen and the late-night, politically minded party vixen. However, Madonna’s desire to always push sexual boundaries certainly showed up on Rihanna’s Talk That Talk, where she very openly sang about all the ways her boy can make her happy. Interestingly enough, both women have songs about birthdays (Rihanna with “Birthday Cake” and M with “B-Day Song”) where they both use a euphemism about licking the icing off. We hope no further explanation is needed about that. So how does MDNA stack up to these girls’ work? Quite well, actually. Aggressive at times and vulnerable at others, it proves that Madge still has it. She can still party with the best of them. And, for that, we’re all thankful. Do you think Madonna still has it? Justin Bieber Ripe For Spoofing, ‘Stevie TV’ Star Says

‘Guys are like, ‘I don’t know what it is, but you’re really hot,’ comedian Stevie Ryan says of playing the teen superstar on VH1 show. By Christina Garibaldi Justin Bieber Photo: Barry King/ FilmMagic Stevie Ryan may make fun of Justin Bieber on her new VH1 show “Stevie TV,” but the actress and the pop star actually have something cool in common: They were both discovered on YouTube. Ryan began her career impersonating celebrities and creating her own characters on her YouTube channel and instantly became an Internet star. Now the 26-year-old comedian gets to do her routines on VH1, portraying some of today’s biggest celebs and reality TV stars. “It’s just a female’s perspective on pop culture, really, at least that’s the way I think about it,” Ryan told MTV News on Tuesday. “It’s really just kind of making fun of pop culture, what’s happening in it, just making fun of these celebrities that are rewarded for bad behavior.” So far on “Stevie TV,” Ryan has created a music video that mocks Katy Perry ‘s “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F),” gotten into character as Lady Gaga and done some cross-dressing to get into one of her favorite roles, Justin Bieber. Ryan explained that Bieber has been the most fun to play “because I always tell everybody how guys and girls always like me when I’m Justin Bieber. … Girls are like, ‘You’re so cute, like, are you really a girl ?’ And then guys are like, ‘I don’t know what it is, but you’re really hot.’ But I really like playing everybody,” she laughed. And though she may poke fun at celebrities, Ryan said she’s really a fan of most of the stars … except maybe one. “I just thought, ‘What a great way to kind of show that this is what the younger generation is growing up with, that who little girls like, is Kim Kardashian,’ ” Ryan said. “It’s just observing these weird behaviors and finding a place for them that makes sense because you can always make fun of Kim Kardashian — she has a big butt, she made a sex tape — but at the same time you have to step back and look at the big picture; people are actually wanting to be like this.” As for future episodes, Ryan really wants to impersonate a certain Young Money rapper. “I would like to do Nicki Minaj,” Ryan revealed. “There’s nothing that I want to make fun of about her, because I’m obsessed with her and I really, really love her.” Asked if she’s gotten any backlash yet for the sometimes harsh jokes on her show, Ryan said she hasn’t, but she’s ready if it comes her way. “It hasn’t happened before and I’d give a flying f— about what any of them have to say,” Ryan said. “Because I’m just doing my job just like they are and so whatever, if anyone has anything to say, bring it!” “Stevie TV” airs Sundays at 11 p.m. ET on VH1.
