Mystikal Says Mannie Fresh/ Birdman Rift Doesn’t Affect Him

While working on Original for Cash Money, Mystikal tells ‘RapFix Live,’ ‘What I do with Mannie is what I do with Mannie.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Mystikal and Sway Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News New Orleans has a rich hip-hop tradition, anchored mostly by Cash Money Records and Master P’s No limit label, which saw its heyday in the late ’90s and early ’00s. Mystikal is one of the few MCs who can claim a connection to both crews, but now that he is signed with Birdman what will become of his relationship with former Cash Money producer Mannie Fresh ? It’s no secret that the Cash Money CEO isn’t keen on working with his former Big Tymers groupmate, as he told XXLMag.com , but after his release from prison, Mystikal hit the studio with Fresh. “I did some hot tracks with him, when I first came home, like some mixtape kinda stuff. We just ain’t ever released it yet,” Mystikal said on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live.” “Me and Mannie, we have about five under our belt right now, so I’m just tryin’a keep it movin’,” he continued. “I got what I need from KLC, the Beats by the Pound stuff. Lord, it’s gonna be an awesome album,” he said of his upcoming Original LP. In 2010, a viral video of Mystikal freestyling to a number of Fresh beats while the two sat in the producer’s car racked up thousands of views. “The amount of hits on that is nuts, because we were just sitting in the car vibing,” Fresh told MTV News of the video while at Bonnaroo last June. “I was just going through beats, and he was rapping on it, and I’m trying to convince him [that] I think that would be his mixtape.” A few of their collaborations — like “Move Something” and “Uh Oh” — have already made their way online. As far as the rift between the #1 Stunna and Fresh, Mystikal says that has nothing to do with him. He also maintains that he is able to separate his business from the personal. “What I do with Mannie is what I do with Mannie, what I do with my company is with the company,” he said. Taylor Swift Goes Big On ‘Hunger Games’ Song ‘Eyes Open’

Track teases soundtrack album, which drops on March 20, ahead of ‘Hunger Games’ release on March 23. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift Photo: Jon Kopaloff/FilmMagic Taylor Swift ‘s other “Hunger Games” track, “Eyes Open,” has hit the ‘Net nearly a week before the official soundtrack drops. Whereas “Safe & Sound” is sparse and gloomy, Swift’s second “Hunger Games” soundtrack contribution is more epic and upbeat, at least musically. The lyrics still touch on many of the darker themes of the film, meaning that she sings about the loss of innocence and the need to stay strong in the face of adversity. “Yesterday we were just children/ Playing soldier just pretending/ Dreaming dreams with happy endings,” she sings on the track, which has been posted on Perez Hilton’s website . “In backyards battle with the wooden swords/ But now we’ve stepped into a cruel world/ Where everybody stands and keeps score.” The song is punctuated by big guitar riffs and a rock-inspired beat as Swift continues on the chorus, “Keep your eyes open/ Everybody’s waiting for you to break down/ Everybody’s watching to see the fallout/ Even when you’re sleeping, sleeping/ Keep your eyes, eyes open.” Lyrically, many of the tributes in the Hunger Games can relate to that need to be strong, but it seems to be particularly pointed at the story’s female lead, Katniss Everdeen, played by Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence, who becomes the face of revolution in the beloved franchise. The full “Hunger Games” soundtrack drops on March 20, just days before the film opens on March 23. It features a wide array of artists, including Miranda Lambert, the Civil Wars (who also appear with Swift on “Safe & Sound”), Arcade Fire, Kid Cudi and more. “I immediately read the book in, like, two days and fell in love with it,” Swift explained about her love of all things “HG” when she sat down with MTV News during her “First” last month. “I fell in love with the characters, fell in love with the world that Suzanne Collins had created. I was just so immersed in it.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Katy Perry Teases Teenage Dream Special Edition With Song Previews

Snippets of ‘Dressin’ Up’ and ‘Wide Awake’ give fans taste of the March 27 release. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection Photo: Jive is set to release Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection later this month, and in two new teases , the singer is displaying her signature sense of sass. Mid-tempo track “Wide Awake” is big and full of emotion. The song seems to pick up where her single “Part of Me” left off. While “Part” is a kiss-off, “Wide Awake” is all about the empowerment one feels after letting go of someone. “I’m wide awake, not losing any sleep/ I picked up every piece, and landed on my feet/ I’m wide awake, need nothing to complete myself,” she sings. “I’m wide awake, I am born again/ Out of the lion’s den, I don’t have to pretend/ And it’s too late, the story’s over now/ The end.” The other teased track, “Dressin’ Up,” is on the other end of the spectrum. All Katy feels on the song is sexy and sexed up. Produced by Tricky Stewart, it’s a synthy, crunchy, grinding dance song, on which she sings, “Oh boy tell me your fantasy/ Tonight’s the night/ Tonight I’m gonna come alive/ Make you forget about your nine to five/ Are you ready for your blood to rise/ Tonight’s the night I’m dressin’ up for you.” “This song is really special,” Stewart told MTV News about the track. “It definitely fits. It’s right there in what her sensibilities are as a musician and a songwriter. She doesn’t change much. She has a very keen musical taste. It’ll be really good.” The songs on the album, which drops on March 27, are an extension of 2010’s Teenage Dream, but feel fresh enough to stand on their own as well. “With Teenage Dream, the reasons why I wanted to put out this special edition, Complete Confection, is two major reasons for me: One, I’m doing it mostly for the hard-core fans because they always love all the extras,” Perry told MTV News earlier this month. “The second reason I wanted to do it is because it’s my one last push, to push that person that is on the precipice of becoming a fan,” she continued. “They’re thinking to themselves, ‘I bought four or five singles, maybe I should actually complete my album and now I should really complete my album because I’m gonna get 19 songs for a really great price.’ I think it’s like a bargain and I’m doing it for my fans.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Katy Perry Related Artists Katy Perry

‘Kony 2012’ Video Went Viral With Rihanna’s Help

‘She had been tweeted by her fans en masse, saying you’re in this video,’ Jedidiah Jenkins of Invisible Children organization tells MTV News. By Jacob Soboroff Rihanna Photo: Getty Images At noon Pacific time last Monday, Jedidiah Jenkins, a member of the nonprofit organization Invisible Children’s inner circle , saw the group’s 278th YouTube video uploaded and wasn’t sure what to expect. Jenkins had written the script to the film, the 30-minute documentary “Kony 2012,” about the Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony, and it had been a grind. “It was really the hardest movie we’ve ever made” in the nearly decade-long history of the group, he told MTV News in a phone interview from Los Angeles. The film is now the most viral video ever, with more than 70 million views on YouTube alone in the video’s first six days thanks in no small part to an army of young supporters who flexed their power by using social media to drive celebrities and friends to watch and share the video. Creating online content and distributing it with social media was nothing new for Invisible Children — the group already had 450,000 Facebook friends the night before the video was posted and they’ve used YouTube to share videos about their cause since 2006 — but the way this video spread was something the group could never have planned. Jenkins said the group posted the video at noon on Monday and that evening hosted a screening at Creative Artists Agency in Los Angeles with celebrities Kristen Bell and Jason Bateman, who took to Twitter at 9:42 p.m., immediately after watching the film. “We had a strategy to screen it at CAA with the few celebrities we know, get them in the room, make them watch it,” Jenkins said. Within the 24 hours that followed, celebrities including comedian Kelly Oxford, Ryan Seacrest, Diddy, Justin Bieber, Oprah and Steve Carrell had tweeted about the video after being notified about it by their fans thanks to a call-to-action in the documentary. Soon enough, Jenkins’ phone was ringing off the hook, including a call from Rihanna . “She had been tweeted by her fans en masse, saying you’re in this video,” Jenkins recalled. “She just kind of responded and clicked on the link that one of her fans followed. It blew her mind. She tweeted it immediately. One of her music video directors, Anthony Mandler, actually went to Uganda with me to see our programs on the ground in November. Anthony texted her. They conference called me at 11 at night and I missed the call twice, because I was at a late dinner. Three calls in a row means it’s an emergency,” so Jenkins picked up. “Anthony said, ‘Jed, I have Rihanna on the line. She wants to talk to you.’ ” Jenkins continued. He recalled the 24-year-old singer saying, “I’ve never been moved like this, I’ve never been involved. I want to go big. I want to get involved. I want this to be my thing and I want to blow this up. I want to get kids involved. I’m just responding to my fans. They’re so moved by this.” Wherever you land in the debate over the organization’s tactics and the film’s accuracy, “Kony 2012” is undeniably a social media phenomenon made possible by support from celebrities encouraged to get involved by their young fans. Even CNN’s Piers Morgan admitted he first heard about the movement from his 14-year-old son. As of press time, Invisible Children has nearly 3 million likes on Facebook, and the question remains: What’s next for this enormous group of engaged and active young people when so many of their peers are apathetic? Jenkins said the group is considering participating in a voter-registration drive as the 2012 election approaches. But he admitted that first he and his colleagues have to get caught up. “We couldn’t have ever, ever imagined that this would be the fastest viral movement in history,” he said. “We are dealing with an unprecedented amount of attention. It’s a huge amount of responsibility. It’s exhausting. We’re excited for the challenge, but it’s intimidating too.” Related Artists Rihanna

The Throne’s ‘Otis’ Maybach Now A $60,000 Work Of Art

Funds raised from car’s auction will benefit Save the Children’s efforts in East Africa. By Rob Markman The Maybach in The Throne’s video for “Otis” Photo: Universal It seems that anything Jay-Z or Kanye West touches turns to gold, even their mangled Maybach-mobile. In the most memorable scene from their 2011 “Otis” video , the Throne rode around in a one-of-a-kind Maybach, chopped and screwed to their specifications. Last week, the $350,000 remixed vehicle sold for $60,000 at Phillips de Pury & Company’s New York Contemporary Art Evening Auction. The reason for the seemingly low bid? Well, the ‘Bach isn’t exactly street-ready. The gaudy chop-shop display wasn’t for naught as the proceeds of the sale will go to Save the Children, an organization that fights battles on behalf of children around the world. “Jay-Z and Kanye West are towering figures in contemporary culture. They have greatly contributed to the artificial barriers between art, music, fashion and cinema to come down,” Simon de Pury, chairman of Phillips de Pury and Company, said in a press release . “Their video for ‘Otis’ became an instant classic. The Maybach they have transformed for it has the starring role.” DUB magazine president and co-founder Myles Kovacs estimated that the custom job cost the Throne around $150,000, but by removing the vehicle’s doors, cutting off the roof and switching the bumper and grill, Hov and Yeezy dramatically lowered the value of the car. “The thing is, the value of that car is nothing now, you couldn’t drive it on the street,” he said in an August 2011 MTV News interview . “It would start malfunctioning big time.” If you think of the “Otis” Maybach as a piece of art rather than a fully functioning car, then the $60,000 auction fetch makes more sense. If you consider where the money will be donated, then it’s a huge win. “The funds raised from auctioning off the ‘Otis’ car are greatly needed to help sustain families [in East Africa] over the next several months,” Save the Children President and CEO Carolyn Miles said in the press release. “We are grateful to Jay-Z and Kanye West for offering up pop culture history to do good for children in Africa.” Related Videos JAY Z and Kanye West: “Otis” Playlist Welcome To Jay-Z And Kanye West’s ‘Watch The Throne’ Week Related Photos Related Artists Jay-Z Kanye West

Justin Bieber’s ‘Boyfriend’ Track Is ‘Super Hip-Hop,’ Producer Says

‘Our whole goal was to make something that was hater-proof,’ Mike Posner says of the upcoming single. By James Dinh Justin Bieber Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images The anticipation for Justin Bieber’s brand-new single, “Boyfriend,” which invades radio airwaves March 26, is building. Not only is the track earning early raves from radio jocks, but also the song’s producer, Mike Posner . During an interview last week with radio DJ Bootleg Kev , the R&B supertalent dished about his studio session with the Biebster for “Boyfriend,” the lead single off the pop star’s highly anticipated album, Believe. “I have Bieber’s new single,” Posner said. “I wrote and produced that with him. And wait ’til you hear the beat; you’re going to flip. You’re going to want to play this song. Yes, it’s super hip-hop.” It was only a matter of time until the young Biebs also took his spitting skills to the forefront as Posner admits the 18-year-old superstar raps “a little eight bars” and offers some “crazy” singing afterward on the track. “That was our whole goal, was to make something that was hater-proof,” he continued. Asked about the star’s work ethic, Posner revealed his hesitation, saying, “He’s super talented. At first I didn’t know what to expect because he’s super young, but dude can write.” Baltimore radio host Mick Lee recently spoke about the track, noting the song’s major transition from Bieber’s previous material. “All I’m saying … is wow … so much different than his previous music,” he gushed on the station’s website. “The best way to describe it is a mix of Justin Timberlake ‘Sexy Back’ … ‘NSYNC ‘Girlfriend’ — And get this … he raps … best comparison is it sounds like ‘Wait’ by the Ying Yang Twins.” Are you excited for Bieber’s track “Boyfriend”? Drake, Rihanna Get Intimate In ‘Take Care’ Video Stills

Black-and-white photos show the two artists reigniting their on-screen chemistry in a ‘minimal’ way. By James Dinh Rihanna and Drake Photo: Lester Cohen/ WireImage Drake and Rihanna get close in the long-awaited clip for the MC’s single, “Take Care,” as shown in video stills that surfaced Monday (March 12). Reigniting their on-screen chemistry, the two chart-toppers are seen holding each other before a blank backdrop. Simplicity seems to be the focus, as the duo sport plain wardrobes in the black-and-white images. ThisIsRNB.com , which first leaked the images, revealed that the clip also features a “group of muscular male performers acting out tribal dance scenes” as well as shots of various animals moving in beat to the Jamie xx-produced tune. News of such a minimalistic and artsy clip isn’t all that surprising, as director Yoann Lemoine revealed to MTV News, “They seemed to be super close and that’s what I wanted for the video. Visually, it’s a very humble video. … It’s not crazy. It’s actually the most indie video I’ve done my whole life. It’s probably the most famous artists, and they were so open to a project that was so minimal.” Lemoine isn’t the only one who had a particular expectation for the visual, but also Drake himself. Back in December, Drizzy Drake admitted that he wanted the clip to be the best of his video catalog. “I want to make it perfect — the best video I’ve done to date — so I’m just taking my time,” he said. “Take Care” serves as the duo’s first video collaboration since Rihanna’s “What’s My Name?” where the pop darling takes a stroll through New York City and embarks on a flirty venture with Drake. Prodigy Crafts H.N.I.C. 3 From Mobb Deep Sessions

‘When you listen to the mixtape, you’re hearing all the songs that didn’t make the album that’s about to come out,’ Prodigy tells Mixtape Daily . By Rob Markman, with reporting by Ade Mangum Prodigy Photo: MTV News Mixtape Daily: Main Pick Mixtape : H.N.I.C. 3 Headliner : Prodigy Representing : Queens, New York Real Spit: : In the studio, Mobb Deep is all work and no play. For the group’s upcoming full-length album , Prodigy claims to have recorded a ton of songs — way more than an album’s worth of material. Rather than let them go to waste, Prodigy decided to gift-wrap 26 of those tracks and package them as his latest mixtape, H.N.I.C. 3 . “The process of recording the H.N.I.C. 3 mixtape, it’s basically when I’m working on an album, I’m working on hundreds of songs,” Prodigy told Mixtape Daily . “Mobb Deep, that’s just how we work: thousands and thousands of songs. When you listen to the mixtape, you’re hearing all the songs that didn’t make the album that’s about to come out, but it’s still good enough for representing Prodigy, representing H.N.I.C. , representing Infamous.” With a bulk of the production provided by Mobb Deep’s Havoc, Prodigy goes on a lyrical tear. The Queens MC balances out his features well. French Montana, Waka Flocka Flame, Cory Gunz and Lady Luck all show up to assist, but Pee remains the “Head N—a in Charge” throughout. On “That’s Nasty,” Prodigy shows flashes of the young version of himself that threatened to “Stab your brain with your nose bone” on his mid-’90s classic “Shook Ones Pt. II.” Over the bluesy Havoc-produced track, he starts, “Blood dribbling, while I stand back giggling/ Brass knuckles on my fingers and pain tingling.” The murderous theme carries throughout. On “Slaughterhouse,” Prodigy imagines bringing death to a government cooperative who takes the stand in court, and on “Make a Hole,” he recounts his days in jail, writing rhymes that he was unable to record. Now that he’s home, however, Prodigy doesn’t seem to be letting an opportunity pass him by. Maybe the thousands of songs he says he has in the stash is an exaggeration, but no matter the number, they all seem to be potent. Joints to Check For

Kid Cudi Says WZRD Success Proves There’s ‘Method To My Madness’

Cudi tells MTV News joint project’s #3 chart debut is the best response to ‘naysayers and people that didn’t really believe in it.’ By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Kid Cudi Photo: MTV News To call Kid Cudi ‘s WZRD’s a passion project would be an understatement of downright sorcerous proportions. From the moment he and producer/bandmate Dot da Genius conceived the idea of making a rock record — which recently inspired a spate of irate tweets accusing his label of failing to support said record — Cudi hasn’t exactly been shy about expressing his feelings about the band, its self-titled album or the success they’ve had in spite of pretty much everything. “We were recording the last Man on the Moon album at Cudi’s house, and we just finished ‘Trapped in my Mind,’ which is the last song on the album,” Dot explained to MTV News last week. “Cudi wanted to implement guitar. So we got a guitar in the building, he picked it up, started playing and fell in love immediately. And, like a week later, I went back to his house and he was like, ‘Yo, we got to do this.’ ” “I was like, ‘Let’s start a band,’ ” Cudi laughed. ” ‘It’s going to be called WZRD and it’s going to be awesome and it’s going to sell 70,000-plus records its first week, with no promo.’ ” And, yes, that last jab is pretty telling. Because though Cudi backtracked a bit on his previous assessments of Universal Republic’s promotional efforts for WZRD, he’s still clearly enjoying proving everyone wrong. And those first-week sales figures (and #3 debut, the highest of any new album last week ) are only adding to that enjoyment. “I think it definitely proves a point, that there was a method to my madness, that the kids are out there and they want the music. It’s just like a that’s-what-I-f—ing thought -type of thing,” he said. “Not just to the label or whatever — I’m not going to say the label had no faith in the project — just kind of to the naysayers and people that didn’t really believe in it. “It’s not Man on the Moon numbers, but, sh– man, it’s more than we thought,” he continued. “To debut at #3 on the charts, that’s dope, that’s some Man on the Moon sh–. I debuted #3 last album and #4 on the first album, so, you know, it’s dope.” What do you think of the WZRD album? Share your reviews in the comments! Related Artists Kid Cudi
