One Direction: A Guide To The Biggest Boy Band Around

After thousands turned out to see the British group perform on ‘Today,’ we look at who they are and how they got so big so fast. By John Mitchell One Direction Photo: Courtesy of Columbia Records On Monday morning (March 12), One Direction made their American television debut on “Today,” performing their hits “What Makes You Beautiful,” “One Thing” and “More Than This” in front of what was, according to Matt Lauer, one of the biggest crowds ever to pack the plaza — right up there with the numbers attracted by top pop acts like Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. If the throngs of screaming teenage girls left you scratching your head, wondering what all the fuss was about, it’s not your fault. These guys seem to have come out of nowhere and already have people asking, “Are One Direction the next Beatles?” Why is everyone suddenly talking about One Direction? Let’s take a look. What is One Direction? We’re glad you asked. One Direction is a five-member boy band. They are already very popular in their native U.K. (hence the Beatles comparison), where their debut album, Up All Night, has already gone double-platinum . Night is being released in the U.S. on Tuesday. Though the lead single from Night, “What Makes You Beautiful,” has only recently been added to U.S. radio, it is already a hit, with sales of 255,000 in just three weeks, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at #28 in late February, giving the boys the highest debut chart position of any U.K. act since the Spice Girls’ “Wannabe” opened at #11 in January 1997. “Beautiful,” a carefree pop ditty with an infectious chorus, bested Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” to take home the fan-voted Best British Single prize at the BRIT Awards last month. The fan frenzy around One Direction is reminiscent of the early days of Bieber Fever. When the band made its first public appearance in the U.S. at Boston’s Natick Mall on March 4, more than 5,000 screaming fans descended on the shopping center. It was a relatively peaceful scene, though, especially when compared to the riot that broke out in 2009 when the 3,000 fans who had gathered at Long Island’s Roosevelt Field Mall to see Bieber began pushing and shoving as they got word that police were canceling the event because the crowd had become too rowdy. A likely reason the band already has such a large and fervent fanbase here in the U.S. despite being new to the scene is their accessibility on YouTube, where the video for “What Makes You Beautiful” has nearly 69 million views. YouTube is also largely credited with launching Bieber. Who is in the band? The five English and Irish gents in One Direction are Niall Horan, 18, Zayn Malik, 19, Liam Payne, 18, Harry Styles, 18, and Louis Tomlinson, 20. In typical boy-band fashion, each guy has his own shtick. This morning on “Today,” we learned that Horan is the “cute little Irish one,” Malik is the “quiet and mysterious” one, Payne is “the sensible one,” Styles is “the charming one” and Tomlinson is “the funny one.” Each group member appeared on the 2010 season of the U.K. version of “The X Factor,” where they tried and failed to make the cut in the individual boys category. At the suggestion of the show’s producers, they joined forces and re-entered as a group . Together as One Direction, they ultimately finished third in the competition and were signed to “X Factor” creator Simon Cowell’s Syco Records. What’s next? The sky’s the limit. One Direction recently wrapped up a small joint tour with another boy band, Big Time Rush , and its success inspired Entertainment Weekly to run a story with a headline asking, “Are Boy Bands Officially Back?” Considering the success of the Wanted , who just wrapped their tour of the U.S. and U.K. at Dublin’s massive O2 Arena on Friday and will release their U.S. debut April 24, it’s a question many are now asking. It’s been a long time since the Backstreet Boys, ‘NSYNC and 98 Degrees ruled pop radio, and the out-of-nowhere success of the Wanted and One Direction have a lot of people wondering whether, after several years of hip-hop stars and pop divas ruling the charts, we’re in for a boy-band revival. One Direction are already booked to perform at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards on March 31 as well as on “Saturday Night Live” on April 7. The band’s December-January Up All Night tour of the U.K. sold out in minutes, prompting the band to add an Oceania leg with five dates planned across Australia and New Zealand in April. The next logical step would be a tour of the U.S., though no plans have been announced. What do you think of One Direction? Is it all just hype or will the boys be around for a while? Bobbi Kristina Plans To ‘Carry On’ Whitney Houston’s Legacy

‘We’re gonna do the singing thing. Some acting, some dancing,’ 19-year-old tells Oprah Winfrey. By Nadeska Alexis Oprah Winfrey and Bobbi Kristina Oprah’s interview Photo: OWN Oprah Winfrey’s intimate interviews with members of Whitney Houston’s family aired on OWN Sunday night. The 90-minute special , featured on “Oprah’s Next Chapter,” found Houston’s daughter Bobbi Kristina, sister-in-law/manager Patricia Houston and brother Gary Houston recounting their precious moments with the late singer. Nineteen-year-old Bobbi Kristina referred to her mother as her confidante, telling Oprah, “I have to carry on the legacy.” “We’re gonna do the singing thing. Some acting, some dancing,” Bobbi Kristina said . “It’s a lot of pressure, but she prepared me for it.” When asked about her relationship with her mother, Bobbi admitted, “I was a little rebellious, but when it came down to it, I ran to Mom. We had our arguments, we had everything, but at the end of the day, that was still my mother, my confidante, my everything.” And despite growing up with a superstar parent, she still saw Whitney simply as her mother. “I just saw her as mom. The first time I saw her as a worldwide icon was when we went on tour,” she said. “And the funeral. … She made an impact not only on a few people. She made an impact on the world. That’s when it hit me.” Bobbi Kristina had no trouble finding words to describe how she would like the world to remember her mother. “That she literally is an angel. I saw her hurt. I saw her cry. We held each other through that,” she said. “They don’t know who she was. Everything people are saying about her — all that negativity, it’s garbage. That’s not my mother. … In reality, I know who she was. Her family knows who she was.” Houston’s only child now resides in the star’s Georgia mansion, where she says she can still feel Whitney’s spirit guiding her. “I can hear her voice in spirit talking to me, [saying,] ‘Keep talking to me. I got you.’ She’s always with me. I can always feel her. I can always feel her with me,” she said. “She always asked me, ‘Do you need me?’ And I caught myself, out of nowhere, I didn’t even know I said it, I said, ‘I’ll always need you.’ ” Whitney Houston was found dead in a Beverly Hills hotel room on February 11 and she was laid to rest in her hometown of Newark, New Jersey, on February 18. She was 48 years old. Justin Bieber’s ‘Boyfriend’ Track Getting Early Buzz

One radio host gets an early listen to the Believe track, out March 26, and compares it to Justin Timberlake’s work. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Lester Cohen/ WireImage It’s still two weeks until Justin Bieber drops his single “Boyfriend,” but there’s already a lot of buzz about it online. Radio host Mick Lee at Z104.3 in Baltimore got to hear the track and has great stuff to say about it. “All I’m saying … is wow … so much different than his previous music,” he wrote on the station’s website. “Produced by Mike Posner … the best way to describe it is a mix of Justin Timberlake ‘Sexy Back’ … N Sync ‘Girlfriend’ — AND get this … he raps … best comparison is it sounds like ‘Wait’ by the Ying Yang Twins …” Bieber’s vocal producer Kuk Harrell recently spoke about the track, which is set for release on March 26, to Hollywoodlife.com , describing it as “hot.” “Now that Justin is 18, he knows what his brand is,” he said. “He knows what kind of songs are right for him. That’s how you know you are genuine artist. Justin is a genuine artist!” Harrell added that he thinks this album could help him win a Grammy, noting, “Justin is a very creative person. He has tons of ideas. When we are working together, I allow him to flush out all of those ideas. He will be an amazing producer one day.” “Boyfriend” is the lead single off Bieber’s next album, Believe , due later this year. “You can’t really expect anything from my album. It’s really, really different,” Bieber told MTV News. “And it’s new; it’s not the same thing everyone’s used to hearing right now on the radio. It’s really exciting for me, ’cause I’m able to break out of my shell and show my fans what I’m all about and show other people who might not like my music that maybe they can like my music. “I’m not trying to lose any of my young fans,” he continued. “I’m not trying to lose any of my fans, I’m just trying to gain fans, and I think that’s the best way to do it. Rather than try to grow up and lose your fans, you can get better and evolve and gain respect from more people.” Related Videos Happy Birthday, Justin Bieber! Related Artists Justin Bieber

Taylor Swift Tops Billboard 2012 Top Money Makers

Lady Gaga, Adele and Lil Wayne make top 10 By Gil Kaufman Taylor Swift Photo: Getty Images Lady Gaga , Katy Perry and Adele had huge years in 2011, with major tours, strings of hit singles, Grammy wins and #1-hogging chart-topping albums. But when Billboard magazine compiled its 2012 list of “Music’s Top 40 Money Makers” it was Taylor Swift who ruled them all. In fact, the 22-year-old country pop darling out-earned all of her fellow ladies combined. According to the magazine’s calculations, Swift earned her #1 spot on the earner’s list thanks to reported earnings of $35.7 million in the 2011 calendar year. Those earnings came from a combination of revenue from quadruple-platinum-plus the sales of Speak Now and its accompanying tour, which grossed $88.5 million in the U.S. alone. But because Swift writes her own songs, she also rolled up a big chunk of change in songwriting royalties as well. Right behind Swift was iconic rock band U2, who earned a reported $32.1 million thanks to their record-setting 360 tour — which grossed a whopping $736 million total over two years — including $50 million in merchandise sales and 1.4 million in digital track sales. Country singer Kenny Chesney was #3 with $29.8 million, followed by previous tally topper Gaga at #4 with $25.3 million. She stayed in the top 5 thanks to sales of Born This Way and its accompanying Monster Ball tour, which grossed more than $51 million. She also moved 12.7 million digital tracks. Lil Wayne rounded out the top 5 with $23.1 million, made up of 12.3 million in digital track sales, $44.7 million in tour grosses and cash from his gig as founder of Young Money Entertainment. The rest of the top 10: Sade (#6, $16.3 million), Bon Jovi (#7, $15.8), Celine Dion (#8, $14.2 million) and Jason Aldean (#9, $13.4 million). Adele rounded out the top list at #10 with $13 million, mostly from the unstoppable streak of her 21 album’s chart run,
which included sales of 6.7 million copies last year alone. The “Glee” cast were just outside the top 10 at #11 ($12.5 million), Katy Perry hit #14 (11.9 million), Britney Spears was at #16 ($10 million) and like her sisters in pop, Rihanna made it to #22 ($7.6 million) through a combination of album and single sales and touring revenue. Other notable entries: Enrique Iglesias (#23, $7.4 million), Usher (#30, $6.2 million), Foo Fighters (#31, $6 million), Justin Bieber (#35, $5.5 million), Kanye West (#39, $5.3 million) and Linkin Park (#40, $5.1 million). Billboard calculated the figures based on proprietary data from its Boxscore archives for concert grosses, Nielsen SoundScan for sales of physical and digital albums, singles and ringtone sales, and Nielsen BDS for terrestrial radio play and streaming service information. Madonna Teases ‘Girl Gone Wild’ Video

Clip for second single off MDNA features Madge getting sexy with male dancers. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna in “Girl Gone Wild” Photo: Interscope Madonna has dropped a video tease for her new single, “Girl Gone Wild.” It’s a black-and-white homage to her wild, sexy days in the ’90s. The fashion video — shot, fittingly enough, by fashion photographers Mert and Marcus, who also did the artwork for MDNA — is fast-paced and full of quick shots of Madonna grinding, smoking, looking longingly out in the distance and being her usual sexy self while clad in chains and latex. It’s intercut with scantily clad male dancers who are seen dancing, touching and kissing one another. It seems that the only girl gone wild in this clip is Madonna. No word on when the full video will drop. “GGW” is the second single off the March 26 album release and features production by Benny Benassi; it was recorded in New York and London. While the album’s first single, “Give Me All Your Luvin’,” was brighter in the way that songs early in her career were, this song is more like what fans heard during her Confessions on a Dance Floor era. “I think the majority of the record is more action-packed,” Madge teased to MTV News back in January about the highly anticipated LP. “More high-energy.” The album also features production from longtime Madonna pal William Orbit , as well as Demolition Crew, Martin Solveig, Alessandro “Alle” Benassi, Hardy “Indiigo” Muanza and Michael Malih. “With William, I didn’t really have a discussion,” Madonna said of working with Orbit. “We’ve worked on stuff for so many years that we kind of finish each other’s sentences. He knows my taste and what I like.” Related Artists Madonna

Madonna’s MDNA: Swallowing It One Pill At A Time

MTV News takes a look at why Madge’s upcoming album is a drug worth taking. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna’s MDNA Photo: Interscope Madonna wants us to dance the heartbreak away on MDNA. The record, set to drop on March 26, has some of the finest musical moments we’ve heard from the pop legend in the last few years, recalling the finer songs and themes she explored on Ray of Light and Confessions on a Dance Floor. It’s clear that Madge had her heart broken, most likely by her former hubby and British auteur, Guy Ritchie. She explores the pain of life post-divorce on many of the songs on the album, and most of the time, it works perfectly. Madonna really understands heartbreak and she understands even better how it can empower someone to be a better person. While all the buzz seems to be about “I Don’t Give A” and the bit too on-the-nose confessions she makes about her divorce (where she even sings about falling off a horse), her anger is even darker on the William Orbit-produced “Gang Bang.” Sparse at times and always punctuated by a pulsing beat, it’s incredibly hard. It’s the type of record you’d expect to hear at some after-hours club that your really edgy friend knows about. It’s about falling completely in love and falling more deeply into hate when it’s over. Serving as a pop-song revenge fantasy, Madonna sings, “And I’m going straight to hell/ And I’ve got a lot of friends there/ And if I see that b—- in Hell/ I’m gonna shoot him in the head again/ Cause I wanna see him die/ Over and over and over.” On the disco-tinged “Love Spent,” Madge sings about feeling like nothing more than a bank to a former lover (she did have one very costly breakup from Ritchie), and on the remorseful, melodic “Best Friend,” she admits, “Your picture’s off the wall, but I’m still waiting for your call/ And every man that walks through the door/ Will be compared to you.” “Superstar” is light and airy, recalling some of the singer’s highlights from the ’80s. The mid-tempo’s production, which comes courtesy of Hardy “Indiigo” Muanza, certainly helps distract from some of the sillier lyrics that have Madonna comparing her boy toy to famed dudes like Al Capone and James Dean. If anyone was wondering why she called the album MDNA, all they need to do is look to “I’m Addicted,” the super club-thumping track full of bleeping noises, spare moments and then big chugging ones, which are filled out with loopy instances. It’s about letting go and loving someone completely: “Now that your name/ Pumps like blood in my veins/ Pulsing through my body, lighting my mind/ It’s like MDNA and that’s OK.” MDNA, of course, is also known as ecstasy, giving the track the perfect metaphor for love on the dance floor. While most of the album addresses the highs and lows of falling in love, “Some Girls” is all about Madonna proclaiming her awesomeness. Another Orbit jam, it’s a crunchy, robotic, thumping anthem that puts Madonna right in the center of female empowerment. “I’m not like the rest,” she proclaims, as if anyone would ever question that. “Some girls are second best.” On the chorus, she declares, “Some girls are not like me/ I’m everything you’ve ever dreamed of/ I got you begging please.” One of the highlights is “Turn Up the Radio,” which sounds like it was born to be this summer’s feel-good anthem. It’s bright, happy and fun, all about letting go of the past. Over Martin Solveig’s sunny production, Madge sings, “It was time I opened my eyes/ I’m leaving the past behind/ Nothing’s ever what it seems/ Including this time and this crazy dream.” She’s not wrong to be that confident on this album. She’s certainly in the groove. And the album is full of strength, but it’s also her vulnerability that rounds it out. If fans thought link type=”content” id=”1678478″> “Give Me All Your Luvin’ ” and “Girl Gone Wild” are what this era is all about, they are only seeing pieces of the MDNA puzzle, that’s only completed when listening to the album from front to back. In the end, this album is a drug worth taking. Are you counting down the days to the release of MDNA ? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Madonna

Notorious B.I.G. Would Have Worked With Kanye West, Lil’ Kim Says

‘He would’ve liked his determination,’ Kim tells Sway on ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Notorious B.I.G. Photo: Getty Images Few people knew the Notorious B.I.G. like . The two shared a friendship, a working relationship and a romance, but when the Queen Bee sat down with Sway on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live,” she simply described herself as Biggie’s “biggest fan.” “I was his biggest fan, rockin’ with him. And I was shorty, I was his pride and joy. Sometimes he would say to me, ‘I feel like you’re my baby, like I birthed you,’ ” Kim said, laughing. With a bond that intimate, there are few people more qualified than Kim to speculate on whom the Brooklyn Don might have collaborated with had he not died on that fateful March night . It’s a question that fans have pondered for the past 15 years . “I think Kayne — I think he would’ve liked his determination because one thing I know about Kanye is when he wants something he will get on your nerves,” Kim speculated. Though Frank White enlisted Mobb Deep’s Havoc to produce “Last Day,” he never had a proper collaboration with the Queens duo. Kim thinks he would have liked that. “I know he was a big Mobb Deep fan. He liked Wu-Tang’s music, I’ll tell you, he liked their music despite all the craziness,” she said, alluding to the feud that existed between Big and members of the Clan. Still, Kim maintains that Biggie’s favorite was Hov. “He and Jay-Z just had this adorable friendship — it was the cutest,” she said. “They were so competitive with each other, but it was such a friendly competitiveness, and I loved it because that’s how it’s supposed to be when you like somebody.” Lil’ Kim says that she feels blessed to be connected to the late rap great. “Sometimes I still don’t believe I was part of that era,” she admitted. As their interview drew to a close, Sway posed a poignant final question: If there were anything you could say to Big right now, what would it be? “I would say he did a good job, he did a good job. He should be proud of himself. He should be very proud,” Kim replied. “He did some good things when he was here, I hope he looks at me and he’s proud. He should be proud of the kids he made and how they turned out. He should just be proud of his work … that he left here on earth.” Join MTV News as we celebrate the Notorious B.I.G’s life on the 15th anniversary of his death.
