U2’s Edge And MTV Spotlight Homeless Youth In Documentary ‘The Break’

Program executive produced by U2 guitarist airs on MTV March 2 at 8 p.m. By MTV News Staff U2 guitarist the Edge has addressed many social issues through music. He tackles a new epidemic — the growing number of homeless youth — in the MTV documentary “The Break,” for which he serves as executive producer. “The Break” premieres Friday, March 2, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Today, over 1.5 million youth in America have found themselves living in various states of homelessness stemming from all sorts of circumstances. “The Break” introduces viewers to three young people who refuse to give in to the despair and overwhelming weight that landing on the outskirts of society has placed upon them. The documentary delves deep into the journeys of these three young individuals as they take steps to rebuild their lives once they are provided with the tools and guidance necessary to emerge out of homelessness and rejoin society. First, viewers will meet Nancy, a 20-year-old woman who was involved in abusive relationships and has been homeless for two years. Nancy will need to regain her independence and change the behavior that has held her back throughout her life. Then viewers will be introduced to Rob, a talented drummer who came to New York with dreams of becoming a star. After a downward spiral, Rob will have to clean up his act in order to get a fresh start and rebuild his life. Lastly, Ava ran away from her conservative home after clashing with her family over her lesbian lifestyle. With the opportunity to receive training and experience, the academically gifted young woman will be inspired to pursue her dream of becoming a police detective. Providing the trio with support is Anne Mahlum, the founder and CEO of the nonprofit Back on My Feet. The organization uses running as a vehicle to promote the self-sufficiency of the homeless population, providing them with support and resources to help them get closer to their goals. Back on My Feet helps Ava, Nancy and Rob finally have access to the opportunities to create functional, healthy lifestyles. In addition to producing the program, the Edge also wrote the original song “No Home Like Place” for the documentary. Related Artists U2

NBA All-Star Weekend Goes ‘Bananas’

‘A lot of people take this situation for granted — I don’t,’ celebrity MVP Kevin Hart says of his win at Orlando game. By Rob Markman Nicki Minaj performs at the 2012 NBA All-Star Game Photo: Getty Images ORLANDO, Florida — The stars weren’t just on the court Sunday night during the NBA 2012 All-Star Game in Orlando as music and Hollywood’s brightest came out to watch the Eastern ballers battle against the Western stars. Before the big game, some of our favorites walked the red carpet and talked b-ball with MTV News. “Bananas” is how actor Pooch Hall described NBA All-Star Weekend in Orlando. Comedian Kevin Hart had a few highlights, but none bigger than when he won the MVP award for Friday’s celebrity all-star game. Hart led his team to victory by scoring eight points and six assists. “I played a lot this year. I knew I was going to be playing in the celebrity game. A lot of people take this situation for granted — I don’t,” he told MTV News in jest. “What I did was I did a lot of weight training, a lot of cardio. It paid off — my endurance was where it was supposed to be. I played 38 minutes, which is unheard of in a celebrity game.” Hart’s celebrity teammate Vinny Guadagnino from MTV’s “Jersey Shore” didn’t fare as well on the stat sheet, but enjoyed the weekend all the same. “It’s my first All-Star Game, going for the East, New York, all day,” he said. Another NYC native, Michael Rapaport, wasn’t rooting for a hometown hero in the ASG. He was actually hoping that Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard would come up big and have a great outing. But it didn’t happen. Instead Dwight finished with nine points for the losing Eastern Conference All-Star squad. It was a fun but highly contested game that was decided in the final seconds. Pooch Hall just hoped that no one got hurt. Unfortunately though, L.A. Lakers guard Kobe Bryant suffered a broken nose after he was fouled hard by Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade. Still, there didn’t seem to be any hard feelings throughout the entire weekend. “For me, All-Star is about having fun, and you see all these guys who are friends hanging out and having a good time, so it makes it great,” LaLa Vasquez Anthony said. Justin Bieber’s Top 18 Moments Kicks Off!

Oh, Baby! Before Bieber celebrates his 18th birthday on Thursday, we’re counting down his best moments so far starting with #18 to #14. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: FilmMagic As Justin Bieber gears up for his 18th birthday this week, we at MTV News decided we’d help our guy celebrate the milestone by looking back on 18 of his greatest moments so far. Whether he’s dazzling us with killer performances, topping the box office and the Billboard charts or just dropping yet another memorable music video, the Biebs has kept us talking since he first rose to super fame way back in 2009. Of course, actually narrowing down all of those moments was no easy task. Our list had to include career successes as well as personal achievements, and the pop star has had no shortage of either. But we put our heads together for the Beliebers. We’ll celebrate every day leading up to the final reveal on Justin’s big day, Thursday, March 1. What will be the #1 moment? You’ll have to keep it locked at MTVNews.com! 18. The 2012 Oscars No, “Never Say Never” wasn’t nominated for an Oscar, but Justin still managed to snag a few headlines at this year’s show. Bieber popped up in the show’s opener with host Billy Crystal in a sketch that paid homage to Woody Allen’s “Midnight in Paris.” Dressed up in formal wear, Bieber shared what seemed to be longing glances with Crystal. The singer also showed his flair for comedy, giving more proof that he’s a true triple threat. 17. Bieber’s Love Life Teen superstar Bieber dating Disney princess Selena Gomez has sparked lots of headlines. Whether they’re walking arm-in-arm down a red carpet or sharing some alone time at, yes, the Staples Center for a “Titanic” screening, this twosome is pretty adorable. Selena has always been the mature one in this relationship — she turns 20 in July — so it might take some pressure off having Justin join in her adulthood. 16. Bieber’s Bowling Party Just as he was getting ready to drop his 2010 album My World 2.0, Nick Cannon challenged Justin to a bowling match . MTV News was on hand at Lucky Strike in New York City as the Biebs tried to beat Cannon. Tons of adoring fans also showed up to cheer on the floppy-haired star. In the end, despite Nick’s big pre-game talk, it was Bieber who won. And Beliebers can take probably take credit for helping him to victory! 15. Justin and his Johnson Hit 2011 VMAs When Bieber walked the VMA red carpet last year, he brought along a very special date. No, not Selena, who was MTV’s red-carpet co-host, but his pet snake, Johnson. (The metaphor was not lost on anyone.) Justin actually seemed to creep out his lady when he unveiled the creepy crawler, and we couldn’t stop talking about it. 14. Someday Perfume Launch Nobody launches a fragrance like Bieber: The Canadian singer took over Macy’s Herald Square in NYC last June to debut his first perfume, Someday . The iconic department store was filled mostly with female fans hoping to get spritzed by the star, and we found out he cares a lot about how they smell. “I just think that what we decided to do — making the fragrance for females, not getting a cologne for males — I said it before and I’ll say it again, I’m more concerned about how girls smell ’cause I’m a guy,” Justin explained to MTV News. “And I know what smells good and I know what I like, so girls should know if [I like] it, then other guys are going to like it.” Share your birthday wishes for Justin and weigh in on the top 18 moments on our Facebook page! Stick with MTV News all week as we count down Justin Bieber ‘s 18 greatest moments leading up to his 18th birthday. On Thursday, March 1 — the teen star’s official big day — we will reveal the #1 greatest moment in his career so far. Plus, stay tuned for even more Bieber as we celebrate the milestone! Esperanza Spalding Dazzles With Oscar Performance

Singer who beat Justin Bieber at 2011 Grammys sings moving version of ‘What a Wonderful World’ during In Memoriam tribute. By Jason Kaufman Esperanza Spalding performs at the 84th annual Academy Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Who was that woman singing that beautiful rendition of “What a Wonderful World” during the 2012 Oscars In Memoriam tribute? None other than the woman who broke Justin Bieber’s heart last winter: Esperanza Spalding . Last year, Spalding beat out sure bets like Bieber, Florence and the Machine and Drake when she won the Best New Artist prize at the 2011 Grammy Awards . Spalding’s biggest claim to fame since the win had been when her Wikipedia page was attacked by rabid Bieber fans following her victory. Since last February, Spalding has managed to fly under the radar. This March she plans to get back on the scene and release her new album, Radio Music Society, her follow-up to Chamber Music Society, the 2010 album that brought her to national attention at the Grammys last year. But before that came a haunting showcase. Spalding’s beautiful take on the Louis Armstrong standard was the perfect accompaniment to a moving In Memoriam tribute . Spalding stood in front of a choir as her voice lifted in the Kodak Theatre while the names and faces of Hollywood legends lost were projected in stark black and white behind her. It was a performance that allowed millions to see what Grammy voters had already seen in her last year. Spalding’s Grammy victory was particularly hard on Bieber , who spoke to MTV News shortly after the loss. “I had no clue what was going to happen; I worked really hard these past few years, and you know, I’m not going to lie — I was disappointed,” Bieber told MTV News at the Staples Center in Los Angeles last year. “But, you know, I’m gonna come back [next year] and we’ll take a few home. … I’m inspired to work harder than I did last year. It’s going to be hard, but I’m going to try.” The MTV Movies team has the 2012 Oscars covered! Whitney Houston, Elizabeth Taylor Remembered At Oscars

‘In Memoriam’ montage also pays tribute to Steve Jobs, Sidney Lumet, Jane Russell and more fallen stars. By Ryan J. Downey Whitney Houston honored at the 84th Annual Academy Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Billy Crystal introduced this year’s “In Memoriam” montage with personal, heartfelt words about two Academy Awards producers who passed away in 2011, one of whom was Laura Ziskin, who produced on films like “Spider-Man” and “As Good as It Gets.” Esperanza Spalding , backed by the Southern California Children’s Choir, sang a restrained and powerful version of “What a Wonderful World” as the clips played. The audience was asked to hold their applause until after the montage concluded, which they respectfully abided by. This prevented the morbid “applause-meter” phenomenon of years past, which seemed to unwittingly measure one fallen industry person’s popularity against another. The montage included a number of producers, costume designers, sound technicians and other departed industry folks, in addition to writers, directors and film stars. Among those honored were Whitney Houston and Apple co-founder Steve Jobs , who was awarded a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammy Special Merit Awards ceremony held in Los Angeles earlier this month. The montage also included Jane Russell (who died shortly after last year’s Academy Awards), Farley Granger (who starred in two Alfred Hitchcock films, including “Strangers on a Train”), Hal Kanter, Jackie Cooper (the former child actor who also famously played newspaper boss to Christopher’s Reeve’s “Superman”), Sidney Lumet (director of classic movies like “Serpico,” “Network” and “Twelve Angry Men”) and Oscar winner Cliff Robertson (best known to modern audiences as Spider-Man’s Uncle Ben). The “In Memoriam” at the 84th annual Academy Awards closed with a clip of Elizabeth Taylor as “Cleopatra.” The MTV Movies team has the 2012 Oscars covered! ‘I’m here to get you the 18-24 demographic,’ Biebs jokes to Billy Crystal during the Academy Awards opener. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber appears in a “Midnight in Paris” parody at the 2012 Oscars Photo: ABC Billy Crystal knows how to get the kids to watch the Academy Awards. When he wasn’t appearing in parody scenes from Oscar-nominated films at the opening of Sunday’s (February 26) show, he was taking a second to lock in the tween viewership, with a good dose of Holocaust-related humor for added measure. For his parody of the Woody Allen flick “Midnight in Paris,” a tux-wearing Justin Bieber rolled up to the Academy Awards host, who was sitting on a stoop. “Come here, come here,” he shouted to Crystal. “What’s up? I’m here to get you the 18-24 demographic. So how long do you want me to sit here for?” “A couple seconds, I think, will do it,” Crystal said. The two then exchanged some awkward, lingering glances waiting out the appropriate amount of time before they could move on to the next part of their gag, which, of course, focused on Hitler and the Holocaust. “So what are you going to do now?” Crystal inquired. Bieber replied, “We’re gonna go hang out with Hemingway and Fitzgerald.” That “we’re” he was referring to was Bieber and Rat Packer Sammy Davis Jr. Crystal, done up as Davis Jr., added, “And then we’re gonna go kill Hitler. Billy, is Biebs the young Sinatra, or am I nuts?” “Oh Sammy, stop it!” Bieber laughed, before pulling off. The opening sketch also included homages to “The Artist,” “The Help,” “Moneyball” and “The Descendants,” to name a few, with appearances by nominees including George Clooney and Jonah Hill. After the sketch closed out, Crystal hit the stage for a musical number. The MTV Movies team has the 2012 Oscars covered! Taylor Swift Gets Prom Invitation From New Jersey Teen

Kevin McGuire is in treatment for leukemia, and his sister is trying to score him a date with Swift. By Gil Kaufman Taylor Swift Photo: Getty Images Taylor Swift has a closet full of sparkly, flowing dresses that would be the envy of any girl searching for just the right look for prom. But the singer who spent her prime prom years touring the world has mostly had to assuage her high school dance jones with a headlining gig on MTV’s 2008 show “Once Upon a Prom.” But now, instead of sharing her big night with 40 dates and the cameras, Swift has gotten an invitation from a Somerdale, New Jersey, high school senior who is hoping she’ll make his dreams come true. According to ABC News affiliate WPVI , 18-year-old Sterling High School football player Kevin McGuire’s sister has started an Internet petition on his behalf asking the country-pop superstar to stand by her brother’s side. McGuire, who is receiving treatment for a relapse of the leukemia he was diagnosed with five years ago, is getting dating assistance from his big sister, Tori, who decided to try to lift his spirits after he fretted that he might not be able to get a date once his hair fell out from chemotherapy treatments. “I said, ‘What if I got Taylor Swift to go to the prom with you?’ ” she said she asked her brother. “His eyes lit up for the first time since he was diagnosed.” As a bonus, the prom falls on Kevin’s birthday. So Tori set up the “Taylor Swift Take Kevin McGuire to Prom!” Facebook site , which as of Friday (February 24) morning had more than 77,000 followers. “All throughout Kevin’s treatment he kept his character intact, remained playing basketball, and even started varsity football as a freshman,” she wrote on the Facebook page. “Kevin is known throughout the community as the High school’s ‘real life SUPER MAN!’ Tragically, Kevin had a relapse, and is now fighting cancer for the second time. Kevin is the kindest, most noble 18 year old a person could even fathom meeting, and throughout his ups and downs Kevin never even questioned ‘why me?’ Nothing, and I mean NOTHING brightens Kevin’s day more than Taylor Swift. Kevin DESERVES more than anyone a special event in his life. And the one thing he wants is to GO TO PROM WITH TAYLOR SWIFT! Let’s make this happen people! TAYLOR PLEASE GO TO PROM WITH KEVIN!!!!!! NO ONE DESERVES IT MORE!” A Twitter hashtag, #teamkevin , has also become a trending topic, with a number of celebrities hopping on the bandwagon, including Perez Hilton, Travie McCoy, reality star Teresa Giudice and sports giants including Michael Vick, Alex Rodriguez, Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith. Swift’s spokesperson could not be reached for comment at press time and the singer had not yet reacted to the invite on her Twitter feed. But many Facebook friends have weighed in on the latest public request for a celeb to accompany a civilian to a public event, including Bernadette Scullin, who wrote, “May your dreams come true!” and Cecelia Denny, who joked, “C’mon Taylor, don’t be ‘MEAN!’ ” Do you think Taylor Swift will take Kevin McGuire to prom? Taylor Swift Invites New Jersey Teen To ACM Awards

Country superstar declines Kevin McGuire’s prom invitation on Facebook — but she has a better idea. By Ryan J. Downey Taylor Swift at the 2011 Academy of Country Music awards Photo: Getty Images Taylor Swift has asked a fan to be her date to an awards show, and it all started on Facebook. Less than 24 hours after the sister of a leukemia-stricken New Jersey teen made a plea to the country star in an online video, Swift responded via her official Facebook page. “Kevin, I’m so sorry but I won’t be able to make it to your prom,” she wrote. “But I was wondering, the ACM Awards are coming up… Would you be my date?” Swift’s camp confirmed to MTV News that the Facebook post is legit. Kevin McGuire, an 18-year-old high school football star, has his sister to thank for the invitation. Looking for ways to support her brother as he underwent treatment for a relapse of the disease he was diagnosed with five years ago, Tori McGuire set up the “Taylor Swift Take Kevin McGuire to Prom!” Facebook page, which had nearly 100,000 followers at press time. The Twitter hashtag #TeamKevin had gotten the attention of a number of celebrities, including Perez Hilton, Travie McCoy, Michael Vick and Troy Aikman. Kevin DESERVES more than anyone a special event in his life.” Comments quickly flooded Swift’s post and new remarks appeared on McGuire’s Facebook page as well. “Congrats! The ACMs are way better than the prom!” wrote Connie Spross, a supporter. The 47th annual Academy of Country Music Awards are scheduled to take place Sunday, April 1, in Nashville. Swift is nominated for several awards, including Entertainer of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year and Video of the Year. What do you think of Taylor’s response to Kevin? Nicki Minaj Toasts Her Hottest MCs Ranking On ‘Roman Reloaded’

‘Hottest MCs top five/ You need money, I got mines,’ Nicki Minaj raps on upcoming album’s title track. By Rob Markman Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News / Getty Images Nicki Minaj let off another shot Thursday night (February 23). We’re still more than a month out from Nicki’s April 3 release date for Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, but the Young Money beauty is continuing to release new music at a manic pace. First, there was the schizophrenic “Roman in Moscow.” Then, the tongue-in-cheek “Stupid Hoe.” Nick then chose the Grammy Awards to debut her, um, spirited “Roman Holiday” single, and on Valentine’s Day, she dropped the RedOne-produced pop affair “Starships.” On Thursday, Minaj gave New York’s Hot 97 DJ Funk Master Flex the green light to premiere her latest single, “Roman Reloaded,” featuring Lil Wayne. “I guess I went commercial, just shot a commercial/ When I flew to the set, though, I ain’t fly commercial,” Nicki raps on the kinetic track. Flex — who is known to brag and boast when he plays an exclusive record — dropped his signature bomb sound effect countless times before he got past Minaj’s opening bars. The veteran DJ taunted his competitors for several minutes with the exclusive before playing the record in its entirety. “Roman Reloaded” seems to be a return to the hard-core rap style Nicki first entered the game with on mixtapes like Beam Me Up Scotty. Not only does the reigning rap queen throw shots at other rap chicks, she puts all her accomplishments on full display shouting out Mattel and their commemorative Nicki Minaj Barbie doll and toasting her inclusion on MTV News’ Hottest MCs in the Game VII list. On Sunday, during a half-hour special on MTV2, the YMCMB queen was announced as the #4 Hottest MC , and she must have hit the vocal booth soon after to lay the vocals. “Hottest MCs top five/ You need money, I got mines,” she spit with an unwavering confidence. It’s all wrapped up with a simple-but-menacing hook. “Bang-ba-bang-bang, my clique bangs,” she raps in between her cocky verses. To cap it all off, YM boss Lil Wayne jumps on the drum-driven street hit with free-associative rhymes about popping pills and sexing groupies. How the title track will fit on Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded remains to be seen, but as a standalone, it proves that when it comes to simply spewing rap bars, Nicki Minaj is still the queen bee. Bieber’s Far East Movement collabo drops next week, followed by his first Believe single in March. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: James Devaney/ Getty Images Fans who want to hear some new music from Justin Bieber won’t have to wait much longer. The singer has revealed that he’s set to drop not one but two singles in the very near future. First off, Bieber’s collaboration with Far East Movement , which also features Party Rockers LMFAO, drops on Tuesday. The Twitter announcement for the release included the hashtag “#LiveMyLife,” perhaps a hint as to the name of the song. The song’s producer, RedOne, recently spoke to MTV News about the track. “I did a few songs with Far East Movement, and one of the songs … to me, it’s a smash,” he said. “And Justin sang the chorus. It’s a really good song, and I think people are gonna dance like crazy to it.” In addition to the release, Bieber revealed that his first single off his forthcoming album Believe will drop in March. “And u guys keep asking. so yeah. my single is NEXT MONTH> #BELIEVE,” he wrote. Little else is know about the song, but given the caliber of talent he’s been recording with for the album of the same name, it’s certain to be something his Beliebers will look forward to. For the album, he’s hooked up with everyone from Pharrell and Rodney Jerkins to Drake, Lil Wayne, Timbaland and will.i.am. “The only conversation we’ve had about Justin’s album that we’re about to do is it’s really important that it’s the proper transition, because we’ve seen him [with] ‘Baby,’ now we’re watching him grow up,” vocal producer Kuk Harrell told us. “And we can’t just throw him into the adult game right away. It has to be the proper transition. There’s a record in between.” It’s an exciting time for Bieber. As he continues to up his professional game, he’s also about to celebrate a personal milestone: The teen star will turn 18 on March 1.
