deadmau5, David Guetta Celebrate EDM’s Big Night At The Grammys

‘It’s amazing for our scene to finally get the respect that I think it deserves,’ Guetta tells MTV News. By Zachary Swickey deadmau5 performs at the 2012 Grammy Awards Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images While grandparents around the world celebrated the reunion of the Beach Boys at the 54th annual Grammy Awards , fans of electronic dance music held their glow sticks high after the dubstep movement’s leader, Skrillex (24-year-old Sonny Moore), took home three Grammys out of his impressive five nominations — not to mention the live performances from David Guetta and deadmau5 during the telecast. Skrillex — who went from fronting a screamo punk band to being a digital DJ in a few short years — managed to snag awards for Best Dance Album, Best Dance Recording (for “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites”) and Best Remix (for his “Cinema” collaboration with Benny Benassi). He lost out on his other two noms, for Best New Artist (folk crooner Bon Iver took that one ) and Best Short Form Music Video (a sweeping Adele nabbed that). Check out our top 10 EDM artists of 2011! EDM’s road to the mainstream hit a high also thanks in part to the particularly awesome pairing of Lil Wayne and Chris Brown for “I Can Only Imagine” with the turntables helmed by French super-producer David Guetta, who at 44 is finally getting some Stateside love (let’s not forget his other ridiculously catchy single “Memories” with Kid Cudi and current chart-dweller “Turn Me On” with Nicki Minaj). “It’s like having a rave outside the Grammys, and I love it!” Guetta told MTV News when asked about his performance before the show. Guetta was happy the EDM community is finally getting some Grammy love, saying, “It’s really exciting, because they wanted to acknowledge electronic dance music, and I think it’s amazing for our scene to finally get the respect that I think it deserves.” An even more surprising performance came from the Foo Fighters and their electronic-music breakdown courtesy of scene icon deadmau5 (many female fans in the crowd could even be seen donning neon “mau5-hats”) for the latter half of their hit tune “Rope.” “deadmau5 is maybe the only EDM artist I know, because we did a bunch of festivals over the summer, and for whatever reason, he would be headlining over there while we were headlining over here,” Grohl told MTV News. “I guess people thought that our audiences would split, but our audiences are compatible in a way, because what he does … rocks.” deadmau5 returned the gratitude to the Foo Fighters, telling us about their performance: “It was actually really well thought out over a month or so. Dave [and the Foo Fighters] were a natural choice for me, because I love their music.” Stick with MTV News for all the news on Whitney Houston’s tribute, the Grammy red-carpet fashion , Grammy winners and more until the hangover wears off! Foo Fighters Gush Over Grammy Wins, ‘Un-Us’ EDM Performance

Dave Grohl especially excited about Best Hard Rock/Metal win for ‘White Limo’: ‘That’s kind of the coolest song we’ve ever written.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by James Montgomery Foo Fighters win Best Rock Performance at the 2012 Grammy Awards Photo: Getty Images Music’s biggest night has come and gone , with Adele and the Foo Fighters walking away with the most Grammy loot. Although Adele bested the Foos with her six Grammy wins compared to their five, the rockers owned the night in their own way, including their part in a tribute to electronic music that also featured David Guetta, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown and deadmau5 . When MTV News caught up with the band on the Grammy red carpet — when they had already won four trophies, including Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance for “White Limo,” Best Rock Song for “Walk,” Best Rock Album for Wasting Light and Best Long Form Music Video for “Foo Fighters: Back and Forth” — we chatted them up about their pre-show wins, specifically the Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance trophy, which frontman Dave Grohl had expressed earlier was the one he wanted most. “We got it!” Grohl said. “I feel so bad for the Dream Theater guy, because they actually had a metal performance, we didn’t, but it’s awesome. That’s kind of the coolest song we’ve ever written,” he said of the edgy “White Limo.” Producer Butch Vig fondly recalls his Wasting Light sessions with the Foos to MTV News. The bandmembers were very relaxed and unaffected by their wins. When we mentioned that their fourth win for Best Rock Album is now the most any rock band has won, they were completely surprised, but grateful nonetheless that they could sit back and focus more on their own performance and the EDM tribute versus the awards. “It’s kind of nice. Now we can just sit there and play and not worry about Grammys anymore,” Grohl said. “I think if we win them all, we look like di–s.” Video: Watch Highlights From The 2012 Grammy Awards Grohl said the band was amped up for their EDM performance with deadmau5 not only because he made a really “clever” remix of their hit “Rope,” but because the onstage collaboration was so unexpected. “We’re going to begin with our [version of ‘Rope’] and kind of mash up and transition into his,” Grohl said. “It’s so un-us, though, when you hear it that it’s awesome,” drummer Taylor Hawkins chimed in. Grammy Night Belongs To Adele, Foo Fighters

The night’s most-nominated artist, Kanye West, takes home four awards. By Gil Kaufman Adele accepts the award for Best Pop Solo at the 2012 Grammy Awards Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images The 54th annual Grammys were supposed to be all about the expected sweep by a titanic soul diva with pain in her heart and a voice for the ages. And while it was most certainly a good night for six-time winner Adele , the death of R&B superstar Whitney Houston on Saturday at the age of 48 cast an unmistakable shadow on the night’s events. “There is no way around this, we’ve had a death in our family,” host LL Cool J said at the top of the show, asking for a prayer in honor of Houston . “Heavenly father, we thank you for sharing our sister Whitney with us … and although she is gone too soon, we remain truly blessed to have been touched by her beautiful spirit.” With that, though, the rapper said it was time to celebrate music. Adele got the night started early with a win before the show for Best Pop Vocal Album, then quickly got in the game on the broadcast with a Best Pop Solo Performance win for “Someone Like You.” Dressed in a glittering black dress, the long-muted diva broke her silence by saying, “My life changed when I wrote this song,” then thanking her doctors for the vocal cord surgery that saved her golden instrument. Her “Rolling in the Deep” also won for Best Short Form Video. Adele’s seat didn’t get cold, as she was back up for Song of the Year for “Rolling.” She took the stage with co-writer Paul Epworth, whom she called the best producer in the world. “He brought me out of my skin to write this record,” said Adele, still chomping on gum, likely to keep her throat loose. On her way to a sweep, she also won Record of the Year for “Deep,” saying, “This is ridiculous!” and thanking radio programmers for helping make her song a major smash. In one of the most anticipated performances of the night, Adele tried to show she was (almost) all the way back by singing the intro to “Deep” a cappella in a voice as strong and resonant as we all remembered. Seemingly pushing the needle to red, she held nothing back, swooping down and rising to the peak of her abilities to offer proof, as if it were needed, that she deserved everything that came her way Sunday night. The topper was the Album of the Year honor for 21, the multiplatinum disc that made Adele a global superstar. “Thank you so much, thank you,” the weeping, ecstatic singer said, holding up the trophy and telling her absent mom, “Mum, girl did good! … This record is inspired by something that is really normal when everyone’s been through it, just a rubbish relationship … it’s been the most life-changing year.” The night’s biggest nominee, Kanye West , was a no-show at the event but took four hip-hop honors, snatching Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song and Best Rap Collaboration for “All of the Lights” from his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and sharing Best Rap Performance with Jay-Z for “Otis.” Though he missed out on the Best New Artist award, Skrillex scooped up a trio of pre-tel gramophones , including Best Dance Recording, Best Dance/Electronica Album and Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical. The Foo Fighters were rewarded early as well, nabbing four Grammys, including Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance for “White Limo,” Best Rock Song for “Walk,” Best Rock Album for Wasting Light and Best Long Form Music Video for “Foo Fighters: Back and Forth.” They also got some main-stage action with a Best Rock Performance win for “Walk.” Singer Dave Grohl said it was a great honor to win for a record tracked in his garage on analog tape. “It shows that the human element of making music is what’s most important. … It’s not about being perfect … it’s not about what goes on in a computer.” In addition to a standout performance, Chris Brown celebrated a major win when he snagged Best R&B Album for F.A.M.E. “We got one,” Brown said, thanking the Grammys for inviting him back to the show three years after a Grammy-eve assault on his ex-girlfriend Rihanna sent him into exile. Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon scored the biggest shocker of the night, besting Nicki Minaj, J. Cole, Skrillex and the Band Perry for Best New Artist. “It’s really hard to accept this award,” Vernon, who had already taken Best Alternative Music Album for his self-titled second release, said about besting the wealth of talent in the room. “When I started to make songs, I did it for the inherent reward of making songs, so I’m a little bit uncomfortable up here. But with that discomfort, I do have a sense of gratitude.” Taylor Swift is used to winning, and Sunday night was no different, as the revenge track “Mean” from Speak Now took Best Country Solo Performance and Best Country Song hours before she played a Depression-era themed version of the song. On a night when attention was turned to a treasure lost, another recently passed soul diva, Amy Winehouse , won a posthumous Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for her duet with Tony Bennett on “Body and Soul.” Jennifer Hudson paid dramatic tribute to Houston late in the show, singing a soul-stirring, gospel-tinged version of Whitney’s showstopper “I Will Always Love You,” accompanied only by piano, ending with the shout-out, “Whitney we love, we love you.” It was just one of the many standout performances during the broadcast, kicking off with rock legend Bruce Springsteen , backed by the E Street Band and a full orchestra for his new recession anthem “We Take Care of Our Own.” Bruno Mars pulled out his gold lam

Rihanna Turns Grammy Stage Into A Rave, With Coldplay Assist

Rihanna and Coldplay perform ‘Princess of China’ for the first time on TV. By John Mitchell Rihanna performs at the 2012 Grammy Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Sprawled out on the floor under a red light and accompanied at first by just a piano, Rihanna hit the stage at the 54th Grammy Awards for a dance-heavy take on her massive #1 hit “We Found Love.” The performance kicked off like a scene straight out of the thematically dark video for the track , with the Barbadian pop star leaning against a wall looking troubled under dark lighting with only a piano playing alongside her as she sang the track like a torch ballad. Looking gorgeous — and giving off a Tina Turner vibe — Rihanna rocked the blond locks she introduced recently, wearing a tight, belly-baring ensemble. The laser lights, LED screens and synths kicked up soon enough, though, and Rihanna welcomed dancers to the stage and lit into a high-energy performance of the dance smash that kept with the feel of the song, devolving into a full-on rave, with the pop star front and center. Like many other performers and presenters at the show, Rihanna took a moment to honor the late Whitney Houston , demanding the audience, “Make some noise for Whitney!” Soon, the tempo backed down and the dancers departed, leaving Rihanna onstage with just Chris Martin strumming an acoustic guitar. The pair then started into the televised debut of their Mylo Xyloto collaboration “Princess of China.” “Her bit on our record is my favorite bit. When the song came out, it sort of asked for her to be on it,” Chris Martin told MTV News of the pop princess’ involvement last fall. “And I think at this point, we have nothing to lose, and so we’ve been trying some new things and trying to break down the perceived boundaries between different types of music.” Coldplay finished things up on an upbeat not with their song “Paradise.” Stick with MTV News all for all the Grammy red-carpet fashion , Grammy winners and Grammy news until the hangover wears off! Taylor Swift Hits Stage With Civil Wars At Grammys

Swift performs her newly Grammy-winning track ‘Mean’ following a performance by her ‘Hunger Games’ soundtrack collaborators. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift performs at the 2012 Grammy Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Taylor Swift ‘s opening act for her 2012 Grammy Awards performance was her “Hunger Games” soundtrack collaborators the Civil Wars, who took the stage to perform their track “Barton Hallow.” The duo praised Swift for already winning two prizes for the night, Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance for “Mean.” “It’s our great honor to welcome a two-time winner already tonight, our friend Taylor Swift,” they said before the singer took the stage. Playing a banjo, Swift wore a baggy light-pink dress and her hair done up in a loose braid for her performance of her Grammy-winning song. Her band, also wearing vintage-style clothing, backed her surrounded by abandoned-looking relics like big wooden doors and floorboards that evoked the country twang of the track. Check out photos from the Grammys red carpet 2012. Mid-song, Swift made her way across the stage, keeping the honky-tonk going, as she sassily looked into the camera and sang the Speak Now track. As she wrapped up the performance, she earned a standing ovation, and in true Swift style, she seemed stunned by all the love radiating her way. The video for Taylor and the Civil Wars’ “Hunger Games” song “Safe & Sound” will premiere on “MTV First: Taylor Swift” on Monday at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV, followed by an exclusive chat with Swift. After Monday’s video premiere — which will also air live on MTV’s channels in Canada, Europe, Latin America, Australia, Asia and Africa — the Grammy winner will sit down with MTV News’ Sway Calloway for a 30-minute interview on MTV.com. Fans of the superstar can get in on the action by submitting questions via Twitter @MTVNews with the hashtags #AskTaylor or #MTVFirst. CMT will air “Safe & Sound” at 8 p.m. ET, the same time the music video will debut exclusively online at MTV.com, CMT.com, VH1.com and MTV’s international sites. On Tuesday morning, VH1’s “Big Morning Buzz Live” will feature the video at 10 a.m. ET/PT. The “Hunger Games” soundtrack, which also features Arcade Fire and the Decemberists, drops March 20. Kanye West Sweeps Three Early Grammys

The most nominated artist of the night, West wins Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song and Best Rap Collaboration. By Gil Kaufman Kanye West Photo: Don Arnold/ WireImage It didn’t look like Kanye West, the most nominated man at Sunday (February 12) night’s Grammys , was going to make an appearance at the show, but even before the curtain came up, he was already a big winner. West came into the night with a leading seven nominations, and though he was controversially shut out of the Album of the Year race, he pulled off a near clean sweep in hip-hop categories handed out before the show. ‘Ye scored a win in the Best Rap Album race, taking the award for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, beating out his collabo with Jay-Z on Watch the Throne, Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV, Lupe Fiasco’s Lasers and Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday. “Everybody’s working hard and he’s definitely another big artist in the game,” Tyga told MTV News’ Sway on the Grammy red carpet when news broke about the West wins. With 17 nominations for the YMCMB crew, label boss Baby didn’t have much to add about West’s win, though Weezy had plenty to say in a pre-Grammy freestyle in which he took shots at West and Jigga . West also scooped up Best Rap Song for “All of the Lights” and Best Rap Song Collaboration for that song’s hook-up with Rihanna, Fergie and Kid Cudi. In that category he beat out some other major players, including Beyonc

Whitney Houston’s Daughter Bobbi Kristina Rushed To Hospital

Eighteen-year-old daughter of Houston and Bobby Brown was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles on Sunday, according to reports. By Rob Markman Whitney Houston and her daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown Photo: Steve Granitz/ WireImage In a most dramatic turn of events it is being reported that Whitney Houston’s 18-year-old daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, was rushed to a Los Angeles hospital today, less than 24 hours after her mother was found dead in a Beverly Hills, California, hotel. According to TMZ , Bobbi Kristina, who was Houston’s only child with ex-husband Bobby Brown, was taken to Cedars-Sinai Hospital on Sunday afternoon (February 12). She was taken out on a stretcher from the Beverly Hilton, the same hotel where her mother reportedly died. Unnamed law enforcement sources confirmed to TMZ that police responded to a call for a medical emergency, but would not confirm that the person transported was Houston’s daughter. In a statement issued to MTV News the Houston family expressed their grief in this trying time. “We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Whitney. This is an unimaginable tragedy and we will miss her terribly,” the statement read. “We appreciate the outpouring of love and support from her fans and friends.” It was reported on Saturday that Bobbi Kristina got into a shouting match with police officers after she was denied entry into the fourth-floor room where her mother had died. TMZ reported she demanded to see her mother’s body, but police informed her that no one was allowed to see the body. Houston’s cousin, singer Dionne Warwick, was also turned away. Bobbi Kristina’s dad, Bobby Brown, was also distraught over the death of the pop and R&B diva. While performing a Mississippi concert with his band New Edition on Saturday night, Brown was visibly shaken but still managed to address the crowd, telling fans that their support for New Edition over the years was the only thing that allowed him to get through the show. “First of all, I want to tell you that I love you all,” he said. “Second, I would like to say, ‘I love you Whitney.’ The hardest thing for me to do is come on this stage.” MTV News’ Sway and James Montgomery will be live from the Grammys red carpet tonight starting at 5 p.m. ET to get reactions from music’s biggest stars on the death of Whitney Houston.
