Did Katy Perry Send A Grammy Message To Russell Brand?

New single ‘Part of Me,’ which Perry debuted at awards show, has some pretty pointed references to her ex-husband. By Kara Warner Katy Perry performs at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images Although Katy Perry has yet to speak out publicly about her split from husband Russell Brand , she sent a pretty clear message out about her post-breakup emotions via Sundays night’s Grammy performance of new single “Part of Me.” The midtempo pop song — Perry’s next single — features several key phrases that speak to her relationship with Brand and the apparent emotional ups and downs she suffered along the way. “Days like this I want to drive away/ Pack bags and watch your shadow fade/ You chewed me up and spit me out like I was poison in your mouth/ You took my life, you drank me down/ But that was then and this is now.” Perry’s message in the song is one of empowerment and moving on, with lyrics like “This is the part of me that you’re never gonna ever take away from me,” “You’re not going to break my soul” and “Look at me, I’m a sparkling firework, a dancing flame/ You’ll never put me out again, I’m glowing.” She briefly touches on the ever-present public attention she receives, wanting to throw away her phone and trying to discover who her real friends are. Perry’s most intense lyrics accuse a former lover of deception and a lost innocence, the most obvious Russell reference being a statement about her wedding band: “You can keep the diamond ring, it don’t mean nothing anyway/ In fact, you can keep everything — except for me.” This isn’t the first time Perry has taken to songwriting to express feelings over a public breakup. The Teenage Dream track “Circle the Drain” reportedly presented a powerful picture of her rocky relationship with “Gym Glass Heroes” frontman Travie McCoy: “You fall asleep during foreplay/ ‘Cause the pills you take/ Are more your forte/ I’m not sticking around to watch you go down/ Wanna be your lover/ Not your f—ing mother/ Can’t be your savior/ I don’t have the power/ I’m not gonna stay and watch you circle the drain.” Stick with MTV News all for all the Grammy red-carpet fashion , Grammy winners and performance recaps until the hangover wears off! Whitney Houston’s Final Days

While the cause of her death is still unclear, details emerge about how the pop legend spent her last few days. By Gil Kaufman Whitney Houston and Kelly Price perform in Los Angeles last Thursday Photo: Gabriel Olsen/FilmMagic The circumstances behind Whitney Houston ‘s death are still murky, but details about the legendary singer’s final 72 hours provide a conflicting view of how she spent her last days. Houston died on Saturday at the age of 48, with the most recent reports suggesting that she may have succumbed to a combination of prescription drugs and alcohol , and not as a result of drowning in her hotel bathtub as initially thought. Houston had kept a relatively low profile recently, emerging sporadically in late 2011 to promote her role in the upcoming film, “Sparkle,” in which she plays singer Jordin Sparks’ mother. The remake of a 1976 film about talented young musicians struggling with addiction — a story Houston was sadly familiar with in her own life — is slated for release in August. It was Houston’s first major film role in 16 years and was to be a precursor to her expected role in “Waiting to Exhale 2.” As investigators try to piece together what killed the singer, a clearer picture is emerging of how Houston spent her final days. February 7 : According to TMZ , Houston paid the second of two recent visits to a Beverly Hills doctor, though it has not yet been determined what kind of physician she saw. February 9 : Houston dropped in on a pre-Grammys party in support of her old friend and R&B singer Kelly Price , who told MTV News her old pal seemed just fine. “We were talking about the kids, she was telling me how proud of me she was for doing this record, doing it independently … and singing the truth,” said Price, dismissing rumors that Whitney was partying heavily that night. “I was still at my hotel getting my hair curled and they called me and said, ‘Whitney’s there!’ She beat me to my own party,” said Price, who performed a gospel duet with Houston that night in what turned out to be Whitney’s final stage appearance . “She strolled down the red carpet, she smiled, she interviewed. She went down to the VIP area and she waited for me. … My friend has had some troubles and challenges down throughout the years, but you have to judge a moment by the moment. You can’t just automatically assume that something else happened. … She was happy that night.” February 10 : Though she had no official appearances on the day before her death, witnesses told TMZ that the singer had “partied heavily” with friends at the Beverly Hilton Hotel that night. The boisterous group reportedly drew stares at the hotel bar packed with other Grammy revelers. The site also claimed that Bobbi Kristina, Houston’s 18-year-old daughter with Bobby Brown, allegedly fell asleep in a bathtub in the same hotel less than 24 hours before her mother’s demise. February 11 : Hours before she was reportedly scheduled to attend mentor Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy bash, news broke that Houston was found dead in the bathtub of her Beverly Hilton Hotel room by members of her staff. CPR was attempted and did not work, and the 48-year-old singer was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. Police found no evidence of foul play and are currently awaiting toxicology reports. February 12 : LL Cool J leads a night of tributes to Houston at the 54th annual Grammy Awards, culminating in a stirring rendition of Whitney’s signature cover song, “I Will Always Love You,” by Jennifer Hudson . February 13 : posts a report containing photos of what they claim are the room-service trays ordered by Houston just before her death. They show several meals, as well as a Heineken can and an empty champagne glass, which suggests that she may have had several drinks on top of whatever prescription drugs she ingested before getting into the bathtub. (There is no proof, though, from the pictures that Houston alone consumed the drinks.) Share your condolences with Whitney’s family and friends on our Facebook page. Grammy Ratings Up Thanks To Adele, Whitney Houston Tribute

Preliminary ratings put Sunday’s show as second highest-rated Grammys ever. By Gil Kaufman Jennifer Hudson performs a tribute to Whitney Houston at the Grammys on Sunday Photo: Robyn Beck/AFP/Getty Images Sunday night’s 54th annual Grammy Awards were a ratings smash thanks to the televised return of the night’s big winner, Adele , as well as a thrilling tribute to Whitney Houston by singer Jennifer Hudson . In fact, the performance-packed three-and-a-half broadcast scored the second-highest rating in history for the show, second only to the 1984 eight-trophy coronation of Michael Jackson for his landmark Thriller album. According to preliminary ratings from Nielsen that combine live viewing with DVR figures, 39.9 million viewers tuned in to the show, putting the telecast behind the 51.67 million who watched the 1984 program. The dramatic ratings uptick followed two years in which the numbers were clustered in the 25 million to 26 million range after what Billboard reported were five years of low-20-million numbers. The show boasted a 14.1 rating among adults 18-49, a 41 percent increase in that demo over last year and the best ratings returns since 1990. Those viewers were rewarded with a diverse roster of performers that ranged from rock icon Paul McCartney performing twice, to the Foo Fighters , a tribute to electronic dance music , Taylor Swift , Nicki Minaj , Chris Brown and Rihanna . The night’s emotional highlight was a stirring tribute to Houston — who died Saturday at the age of 48 — by Hudson, who performed Whitney’s most iconic song, a cover of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You.” The other major buzz moment was the return to the stage of Adele, who sang at a major industry event for the first time on Sunday after career-saving vocal-cord surgery last November. Nicki Minaj Calls Grammy Performance Roman’s ‘Coming-Out Party’

‘I’ve been writing this story for a long time,’ rapper tells Ryan Seacrest of her alter ego Roman Zolanski. By Jocelyn Vena Nicki Minaj performs at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Nicki Minaj nearly stole the show at the 2012 Grammy Awards when she performed her frenetic Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded track, “Roman Holiday.” Rife with religious symbolism, the performance welcomed her alter-ego Roman Zolanski to the Grammy stage for the first time. On Monday (February 13), Minaj called into Ryan Seacrest’s radio show to give her take on the red-hot performance. “Well, [that religious character I walked the carpet with] is a major part of the story and the movie that I’m writing about one of my alter egos; his name is Roman,” she said. “Basically, the religious figure is there because he was called on by Roman’s mom [Martha] to rehabilitate him. I wasn’t going to do the red carpet, so you know I was backstage prepared … my people wanted me to do it. I had this amazing robe made for me by Versace sent from Milan and I said, ‘I have to wear this.’ They were so generous, and I was going to originally wear it in the performance, but then when I got it, it was a little heavy for the performance. “I had this vision for Roman. I had this vision for him to be sort of exorcised … people around tell him he’s not good enough because he’s not normal. So his mother is scared and the people around him are afraid. He wanted to show that not only is he amazing, but he’s never going to be exorcised, even when they throw holy water on him, he still rises above.” In fact, when MTV News caught up with Minaj in late 2011, she shared the origins of this particular plotline. “Well, he was there [in Moscow] secretly because [alter ego] Martha wanted him to go there,” she said. “So they put him in this thing with monks and nuns; they were trying to rehabilitate him.” Minaj told Seacrest that she feels the performance, choreographed by Laurieann Gibson and directed by Hype Williams, was a success. “It’s funny because it was the most comfortable I’ve been in my entire life,” she said. “The Grammys chose ‘Roman Holiday.’ They heard ‘Roman Holiday’ and I could not play them another record after that. I have to stay true to what I’m doing … my fanbase, they understand every single thing. Roman was created two years ago. I’ve been writing the story for a long time and yesterday was his coming-out party. It just was very literal and streamlined if you know who Roman is and if you don’t know the Roman character, you have to digest it. While she has no plans to recreate that Grammy performance, she has made it clear several times to MTV News that this April will kick off the era of Roman. In a previous interview with Minaj, she explained that Roman is definitely her favorite alter-ego. “[He’s] bad. That’s why I like Roman,” she said. “I think I started liking Roman more because everybody else starting like Roman, so he became my favorite. People are expecting him to do some real craziness on the next album.” The over-the-top spectacle was, in part, inspired by her Super Bowl performance with Madonna. “Meeting Madonna changed my life. This performance was it, and this is the first performance I’m proud of in my whole life. Madonna was the first person in history who was able to make me change my wig,” she said of the Queen of Pop’s undeniable influence over her. “When you see her vision, it’s like, ‘Oh, OK. If someone this talented and this rich is still giving it this much [then I should too].’ ” And, she explained that she cares so much for Madge as an artist that she felt “disappointment” over M.I.A.’s headline-grabbing middle finger salute . “Even though I’m a coo-coo lady too, I would never be able to do it off the strength of Madonna,” she said. “We’re kind of all firecrackers.” What did you think of Nicki’s alter ego Roman? Whitney Houston Remembered By ‘Waiting To Exhale’ Co-Stars

Houston’s talents were ‘undeniable and vast,’ actress Angela Bassett says in statement. By Kevin P. Sullivan Angela Bassett, Whitney Houston, Lela Rochon and Loretta Devine in “Waiting to Exhale” Photo: 20th Century Fox In the days since her tragic death, there has been an outpouring for Whitney Houston from the music industry, but those who worked with Houston on feature films have also spoken out about her passing. Houston starred in 1995’s “Waiting to Exhale” alongside Angela Bassett , Loretta Devine and Lela Rochon . The film, directed by Academy Award-winning actor Forest Whitaker, was based on Terry McMillan’s book and marked Houston’s second starring role in a film after Bassett, Devine and McMillan spoke publicly about Houston’s death, each expressing their deep sadness at the loss. “I am so thankful to have been enveloped by the warmth of Whitney’s great talents. They were undeniable and vast,” Bassett said in a statement. “Whatever her burdens, she has at last laid them down and picked up instead a crown. For truly, she was and will ever be for us — who were so captivated by her strengths — unparalleled.” Both Devine and McMillan referenced the developing sequel the group was to collaborate on, “Getting to Happy,” in their comments about Houston’s death. McMillan, however, insisted over Twitter that now was not the time to talk about the status of the sequel. “I am not thinking about the damn movie,” she said. “So please, don’t ask.” The author said that she had been afraid this would happen and stated, “I’m sad, hurt and angry. Because I did not want to see her leave us. Period.” Houston’s “Waiting to Exhale” co-star Devine worked with the singer on several occasion and had expressed hope about working together again. “I am overwhelmed. I cannot wrap my mind around this. I missed the chance to see her at a party this past Thursday and when we spoke last she had just finished ‘Sparkle’ and she told me how excited she was to start production on ‘Waiting to Exhale 2’ with Angela, Lela and myself,” Devine said. “My prayers go out to her family and I am so honored for the time I spent working with her on ‘Waiting to Exhale,’ ‘The Preacher’s Wife’ and on ‘Boston Public.’ I love you, Whitney, and I will miss your easy laugh.” Share your condolences with Whitney’s family and friends on our Facebook page. Wale’s Ambition Makes Him #10 Hottest MC In The Game!

Mr. Folarin’s tireless work ethic and an assist from Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group lands him a spot on MTV News’ Hottest VII list. By Nadeska Alexis Wale Photo: Getty Images Wale’s sophomore LP, Ambition, debuted at #2 on the albums chart in November, and the title couldn’t have been more appropriate. The Washington D.C. rapper reinvented himself in 2011, claiming a new space in the hip-hop stratosphere after a sound, but commercially disappointing, debut two years earlier. Wale’s tireless work ethic, along with a deal from Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group, were the keys to his success and his #10 slot on MTV News’ Hottest MCs in the Game VII list. After releasing Attention Deficit in 2009, Wale parted ways with Interscope Records and decided to continue on his mixtape grind. In August 2010, he dropped More About Nothing, the second installation of his “Seinfeld”-themed series. And if Wale was putting out feelers for his fanbase, it worked. The mixtape became a worldwide trending topic on Twitter, and pulled in 100,000 downloads in a matter of hours. Fans weren’t the only ones paying attention though. Rick Ross, in the midst of constructing his MM Group empire, also took notice. Want to Join the Debate? Just Hit us on Twitter using the hashtag #HottestMC! By February 2011, Wale was officially signed to MMG under the Warner Bros. umbrella. With the release of Maybach Music’s Self Made Vol. 1 compilation last summer, Wale demonstrated his ability to deliver bangers on hits like “600 Benz,” and from there his star only continued to rise. “Wale really touched on a broad scale, when it comes to an audience, it’s hard to dispute that,” said Yomi Desalu, MTV’s senior director of music and talent programming strategy. The criteria to be considered a Hottest MC are based on a combination of impact, buzz, sales, lyrics, swag and the intangibles. Mr. Folarin pretty much touched on them all. He performed with the Maybach crew on shows like “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” finally getting his mainstream shine. With the right support system behind him, Wale began to prep his sophomore album, but he teased it with another excellent mixtape, The Eleven One Theory, in August 2011. In addition to proving that he was still a very talented lyricist, singles like “Bait” reinforced the fact that he’d finally found a sound that would appeal to a wider audience. By the time November 1 rolled around, Wale had built plenty of anticipation for his second album. Thanks in part to Rick Ross — who demonstrated his uncanny talent for branding in 2011 — #Ambition took on a life of its own in the world of social media, with its inspirational undertones. Lead single “Lotus Flower Bomb,” plus the Kid Cudi-assisted “Focused” , “Slight Work” (featuring Big Sean) and, of course, the title track “Ambition” (featuring Meek Mill and Ross) struck just the right balance between Wale’s sometimes-dense rhymes and radio-friendly numbers. “Lotus Flower Bomb is a #1 record and Wale’s album was very balanced and diverse,” MTV Jams’ Tuma Basa noted. In the post-release madness, Wale appeared alongside Rick Ross on the cover of Billboard , dropped verses on the Bawse’s Rich Forever mixtape and even recruited Chris Brown to direct the visuals for “Slight Work.” After shaking off the disappointment of his debut album and surviving the dreaded sophomore slump, things are only looking up for Wale. Tune in to MTV2 on Sunday, February 19, at 10 p.m. ET/PT to catch ” MTV2 Presents: Yo! MTV Raps Classic Cuts ,” then watch “Hottest MCs in the Game VII” immediately after at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT before capping the night off with ” Sucker Free Certified ” at 11 p.m. ET/PT. Taylor Swift’s Finest ‘First’ Moments

Swift premieres her ‘Hunger Games’ video ‘Safe & Sound’ on ‘MTV First: Taylor Swift’ Monday (February 13), followed by an exclusive chat. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift Photo: MTV News Taylor Swift will sit down with MTV News’ Sway Calloway on Monday (February 13) for “MTV First: Taylor Swift,” during which she will premiere her video for “Safe & Sound,” followed by an exclusive 30-minute chat. Swift isn’t new at getting the “First” treatment. In May 2011, she sat down with Sway for “MTV First” to premiere her video for “The Story of Us.” During their interview, Swift got personal, even sharing what she loves to do most in her hometown of Nashville, among other things. Before Monday’s latest installment of “MTV First” with Ms. Swift, MTV News is taking a look back at her finest revelations from the May 2011 episode. What does Taylor like to do in Nashville? “Nashville … you want to go to Hillsboro Village ’cause it’s really cute — this little bohemian shopping district. It’s walking distance from my place. There’s this coffee place, Fido, that I love. There’s a restaurant called City House that’s really cool,” she said. “I love the grocery store. The grocery store’s one of my favorite places.” Where’s the weirdest place she’s ever written a song? “The weirdest place I have ever written a song is probably in an airport, and I got an idea so fast that I just had to run to the bathroom at the airport, grab a paper towel and write lyrics on the paper towel,” she said. “I still have it. I still have it in a box in my room.” What place in time would Taylor most want to travel to if she could? “I would want to see, probably, New York City around the turn of the century,” she said. ” ‘Cause, you know, it looks drastically different now than how it probably looked back then, and I just think that would be really exciting.” So, how much do Sway and Swift like each other? “That was a wonderful, wonderful experience,” she said of meeting Sway for the first time in 2008 for the MTV special “Once Upon a Prom.” From there, the pair relived all their greatest interview moments — including chats on red carpets for shows like the VMAs and the Grammy Awards . The gentlemanly Sway later handed her flowers. And so it seems there’s no lack of love there. Come Monday night, expect Sway and Taylor to make more memories, and you never know what interesting insider tidbits Swift will share. “Safe & Sound” is the lead single off the “Hunger Games” soundtrack and features the Civil Wars. Following Monday’s video premiere — which will also air live on MTV’s channels in Canada, Europe, Latin America, Australia, Asia and Africa — the Grammy-nominated singer will sit down with Sway for a 30-minute interview on MTV.com. Fans of the superstar can get in on the action by submitting questions via Twitter @MTVNews with the hashtags #AskTaylor or #MTVFirst. CMT will air “Safe & Sound” at 8 p.m. ET, the same time the music video will debut exclusively online at MTV.com, CMT.com, VH1.com and MTV’s international sites. On Tuesday morning, VH1’s “Big Morning Buzz Live” will feature the video at 10 a.m. ET/PT. The “Hunger Games” soundtrack, which also features Arcade Fire and the Decemberists, drops March 20. The movie hits theaters on March 23. Whitney Houston’s Death: Prescription Drugs And Alcohol, Report Says

TMZ says Coroner’s officials have told icon’s family she likely died from drugs and alcohol; daughter Bobbi Kristina released from hospital. By Jocelyn Vena Whitney Houston Photo: Epsilon/ Getty Images On Sunday night, the life and impressive career of Whitney Houston was celebrated at the 2012 Grammy Awards , with everyone from Bruno Mars to host LL Cool J and Jennifer Hudson recalling the immense talent of the late icon. Since her passing on Saturday, more reports have surfaced about what might have contributed to her death . After initial speculation that she might have drowned in the bathtub of her Beverly Hills hotel room, a new TMZ report suggests that prescription drugs and alcohol might have played a bigger part in her death than originally believed. Sources tell the site that L.A. County Coroner’s officials have told Houston’s family that despite earlier drowning reports, it’s likely she died of a combination of Xanax, other prescription drugs and alcohol. There wasn’t enough water in her lungs to suggest that drowning played a part, the report says, and she might have died before her head was submerged in water. Her body was reportedly found by her aunt, Mary Jones, who entered the bathroom to check on the singer. Houston’s body will be flown to Atlanta once it is released from the coroner’s office, sources said. Meanwhile, Houston’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina , has been released from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after being treated for a stressed-induced panic attack shortly after her mother’s death. Since Houston’s passing, Bobbi Kristina’s father, Bobby Brown, has flown to L.A. to be with his daughter, E! News reports. According to a People.com eyewitness, when he landed in L.A., “Bobby had a blank stare and looked exhausted … His friends seemed concerned about him and they surrounded him as they walked through the airport.” He had been on tour with New Edition when he left the trek to join Bobbi Kristina. Sunday’s hospitalization allegedly wasn’t the only health scare for the 18-year-old over Grammy weekend. TMZ reports that she had fallen asleep in the bathtub Friday at the same hotel where her mother was found dead the next day. Bobbi Kristina’s friends reportedly called security to unlock the door and help them remove her from the tub. Share your condolences with Whitney’s family and friends on our Facebook page. Nicki Minaj’s Grammy Spectacle Draws Mixed Reaction

Twitter followers debate about the performance, while one hip-hop expert tells MTV News it signals Minaj’s ‘push for pop.’ By Rob Markman Nicki Minaj performs at the 2012 Grammy Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Nicki Minaj’s Grammy performance Sunday night (February 12) was spirited, to say the least. Beginning her set with the “Exorcism of Roman” mini-movie, Minaj unleashed her alter ego onstage in a horror-themed backdrop and debuted her “Roman Holiday” single. It was the most elaborate of the night’s Grammy performances and has everyone talking. AllHipHop.com founder Chuck Creekmur thinks the performance will be among the most-talked-about tomorrow. “I definitely felt like she was reaching out to the mainstream with this performance, trying to make that full leap into the pop world,” he told MTV News. “She’ll definitely have people talking. Obviously, we’ve seen this before with Madonna and Lady Gaga — especially Gaga.” Video: Watch Highlights From The 2012 Grammy Awards Nicki’s fanatic following on Twitter was in full support of Minaj’s display. “@NICKIMINAJ that is a monumental M4L for you and us. I’m in love with your performance,” @SlickerGuy tweeted. Others weren’t as turned on by the Harajuku Barbie’s set. “Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj, I’m all about expression, but it has gone overboard. Love Adele cause her focus is on music, not controversy,” @thekatiestevens wrote. “I liked Nicki Minaj’s performance. Too many people be sipping on that hater aid! Hahaha,” @_lookslikeali wrote, responding to all the negative comments. While he did praise her for pushing the envelope, Creekmur thought Minaj was slowly shifting out of the hip-hop universe for poppier pastures. “One part theater and one part music — it just felt very much like she almost abandoning her hip-hop roots and really making a push for pop,” he said. “Not necessarily in a bad way, but definitely a concerted effort; when you’re making the leap and you know you’re not coming back.” Stick with MTV News for all the news on Whitney Houston’s tribute, the Grammy red-carpet fashion , Grammy winners and more until the hangover wears off!
