Common Brings ‘LUV’ To Sundance

Sundance represents an opportunity to ‘[push] forward with Common as an actor and as a producer,’ the rapper tells MTV News. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Common at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival Photo: Jemal Countess/Getty Images PARK CITY, Utah — When you’re making your debut as a producer and lead actor in a feature film, it doesn’t hurt to surround yourself with stellar actors like Danny Glover, Charles S. Dutton, Dennis Haysbert and Michael K. Williams. With talent like that on your side, it’s nearly impossible not to produce good work. That’s Common ‘s hope, at least. The rapper/actor makes his first turn as a leading man in a feature film in “LUV,” the Sundance Film Festival drama about an ex-con who leaves prison and strives to mentor his troubled nephew upon release. The film represents a lot of firsts for Common: It’s his first starring role and it’s the first movie he’s ever acted in and produced to appear at Sundance. “This is something that is me,” Common told MTV News at the fest. “And it’s a part of what I want to do pushing forward with Common as an actor and as a producer.” The Chicago MC is no stranger to appearing onscreen, of course. He’s had memorable roles in movies like “Wanted” and “Terminator Salvation,” and he stars on the AMC western “Hell on Wheels.” But this is Common’s first time in an independent movie, and the differences between the indie world and the studio system became abundantly clear to him very early on. “Things are just different. But what’s still cool about it is you’re really using your artistic creativity to come together and make the best thing, because you don’t have that many resources,” he said. “You don’t have the bigger budgets, you don’t have the things that [studio films have]. You need to use total creativity to make things rise. “So this is a first for me — and it’s a great first,” he added. The 2012 Sundance Film Festival is officially under way, and the MTV Movies team is on the ground reporting on the hottest stars and the movies everyone will be talking about in the year to come. Keep it locked with MTV Movies for everything there is to know about Sundance. Oscar’s Best Song Category: Why Only Two Nominees?

Complicated voting rules shut out songs by Elton John, Lady Gaga, Mary J. Blige and Pink. By John Mitchell Blu and Linda in “Rio” Photo: 20th Century Fox Tuesday morning’s (January 24) announcement of the 2012 Oscar nominations delivered plenty of surprises. Michael Fassbender (“Shame”), Albert Brooks (“Drive”) and Charlize Theron (“Young Adult”) were overlooked in the acting categories, while Melissa McCarthy (“Bridesmaids”), Rooney Mara (“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”) and Max von Sydow (“Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close”) scored surprise nominations. But perhaps no category was more head-scratching than Best Original Song. Despite the fact that a short list of 39 tracks were eligible for nomination , only two were named — ” Man or Muppet ” from “The Muppets” and “Real in Rio” from “Rio” — leaving tunes from Elton John and Lady Gaga, Pink, will.i.am, Zooey Deschanel, Elvis Costello and Mary J. Blige shut out of the competition. Many Oscar-watchers were left wondering why the Academy would opt away from the traditional five contenders in favor of just two little-heard songs. Well, a closer look at the Oscar rule book shows it’s probably less a case of choosing to nominate only two songs than it is simply a case of a single song scoring enough points to secure a nod, and then bringing its closest competition along for the ride. Oscar nominations are arrived at using a very complicated weighted system in which members of the Academy, voting exclusively for members of their own branch (i.e. actors chose the acting nominees, directors vote for directors, etc.), rank contenders in order of preference. From there, a “magic number” is determined that relies on the number of ballots cast for a category, along with a specific mathematical equation. Ballots are tallied and contenders are eliminated through several rounds in a process that tabulates factors like first-place mentions and so on. Once a contender reaches the magic number, they are an Oscar nominee. (The folks over at EW ‘s PopWatch break down the selection steps in great detail.) So this is how the nominees are determined — with one exception: Best Original Song. In 2009, when the Academy opted to up the number of Best Picture nominees to 10 (the voting body has since altered that number), it also changed the rules for Best Original Song. As Billboard points out, members of the Academy’s music branch now “assign each song a numerical score between 1 and 10, and if no song receives an average of more than 8.25, there are no nominees. If only one song tops the threshold, as clearly happened here, the next highest vote getter secures a nomination as well.” This year’s Best Original Song category boils down to this: either Bret McKenzie’s “Man or Muppet” or “Real in Rio” by songwriting trio Sergio Mendes, Carlinhos Brown and Siedah Garrett secured a score of 8.25 or better, earning a nomination and pulling the #2 vote-getter into the fray. Simply put, members of the music branch didn’t award any other song, including John and Gaga’s duet “Hello Hello” or Blige’s “The Help” track “Living Proof,” a score high enough to secure a nomination. But lest you think that this means the category is all but locked, think again. While selecting the Oscar nominees is an intensely mathematical process, picking the winners is much easier. Once the nominations are decided, every member of the Academy can vote in each category and the nominee that receives the most votes wins. Easy enough. And since actors are the largest voting block of the Academy— and would have had nothing to do with the tracks selected to contend for Best Original Song — it’s anyone’s game. Bruce Springsteen Announces First Leg Of Wrecking Ball Tour

Stateside portion of first tour since Clarence Clemons’ death begins March 18 in Atlanta. By James Montgomery Bruce Springsteen Photo: Mike Coppola/Getty Images Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band had been teasing a lengthy run of U.S. shows in support of the upcoming Wrecking Ball album, and on Tuesday (January 24), they finally revealed the first leg of dates. Kicking off March 18 in Atlanta, the first stateside portion of the Wrecking Ball World Tour sees Bruce and the Band playing arenas in cities like Tampa, Boston, Philadelphia, East Rutherford, New Jersey — of course — New York, Detroit and Los Angeles, before coming to a close with a May 2 gig in Newark. Select dates go on sale as early as Friday. For more information, check out the Boss’s . The shows mark Springsteen’s first U.S. gigs since the death of founding E Street member Clarence Clemons last year. Much like the title of the tour implies, they’ll be playing songs from the upcoming Wrecking Ball album , which hits stores on March 6. Just last week, Springsteen premiered the first single off the album, a surging slice of Americana called “We Take Care of Our Own,” and early reports seem to indicate that the new disc may very well be a heavy, heady thing, featuring guests like Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello and Pearl Jam’s Matt Chamberlain, and tackling issues like economic injustice. Miranda Cosgrove Drops Second ‘iCarly’ Soundtrack

iCarly: iSoundtrack II features original songs from Nickelodeon cast and hits by Katy Perry, Ke$ha. By Jocelyn Vena Miranda Cosgrove Photo: MTV News Miranda Cosgrove is currently in between seasons of her hit Nickelodeon series, “iCarly,” but that doesn’t mean that fans can’t dance their butts off to some of the show’s choice tunes. On Tuesday (January 24), the teen star dropped iCarly: iSoundtrack II , and it’s certainly filled with just enough Carly musical goodness to keep everyone at bay until the next season of the show kicks off. Featuring original tunes from Cosgrove and her “iCarly” castmates, the album also includes hits like Katy Perry ‘s “Hot N Cold” and Ke$ha ‘s “Blow.” For her part, Cosgrove recorded her songs during her 2011 Dancing Crazy Tour , making the experience that much more frenzied in the best way possible. “It was kind of crazy and chaotic, because I’d have a day off and I’d be in Boston or I’d be in New York and I’d go in the studio and work on these songs,” Cosgrove told MTV News. Cosgrove recently dropped the track “Million Dollars” off the record and elaborated a bit about why she wanted to record that song. “It’s kind of about like I was in a relationship and the person meant everything to me and then — I don’t know — it’s that feeling that you have when you break up with someone and you’re kind of questioning everything,” she said. “And you don’t really know what went wrong and you really cared about the person. So I mean I just try to do songs that are different experiences I’ve been through and stuff that I think people that watch my show can relate to.” While she is looking forward to releasing this new batch of music, she certainly isn’t ruling out hitting the studio to work on some of her own tunes. “I really want to. I love music and I love going on tour,” she said. “I think touring is one of my favorite things because I get to meet all the people that watch the show and are into the music. It’s totally different than being on a little sound stage.” Are you excited for the iCarly soundtrack? Leave a comment below. Related Artists Miranda Cosgrove

Drake Wrestles Tiger, Wows Fans In South Africa

‘I went on a safari — I got tackled by a tiger!’ Drake tells MTV News of his recent trip overseas. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sam Hendrick Drake Photo: MTV News Drake ‘s Club Paradise Tour doesn’t kick off until next month, but that hasn’t stopped Drizzy from getting in some show dates. On Saturday, the Young Money soldier rocked the Bing Bar in Park City, Utah, during the Sundance Film Festival , and in December, he took a couple of dates in South Africa. During his trip, Drake learned not to underestimate his overseas fans and … to beware of tigers. “Africa was amazing, man. Africa was amazing because I went, like, OK, I’m gonna have to do Rihanna ‘What’s My Name,’ I’m gonna have to do ‘Bedrock,’ I’m gonna have to do ‘Every Girl,’ ” Drake told MTV News of his planned playlist. “I went out there and I did the music that I thought they wanted to hear and all they were screaming was, like, they wanted to hear Take Care. They wanted to hear the new stuff.” Of course, Drizzy has a ton of solo hits like “Best I Ever Had,” “Successful,” “Over” and “Find Your Love.” When you add in his high-powered collaborations with Rihanna, Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj, it all makes for a pretty impressive set list. Going into his African show dates, Drake didn’t even consider the impact that his material from the November-released Take Care would have on fans. “I started performing the new stuff and they knew it word for word,” he said. “It was incredible. It was like 5,000 people.” Apparently people aren’t the only ones to go crazy over the Toronto MC either: He has quite the effect on animals. “I went on a safari — I got tackled by a tiger!” he said. “It was crazy!” We bet!
