Asher Roth, Kendra Wilkinson, Kelly Osbourne Look Back, On ‘When I Was 17’

The stars reminisce about tattoos, cemetery scares and singing careers. By Dan Schenek Asher Roth appears on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV News When Asher Roth was 17, he remembered being a car-less “white boy wannabe.” The lively artist developed a fan base while attending college with the help of social-networking websites, and arrived on the mainstream hip-hop scene with a slew of mixtapes. Almost overnight, he found himself with a record deal and a full studio album, Asleep in the Bread Aisle. “In high school, I ended up finding my home with kids who had one common interest, and that’s hip-hop music,” Roth said on the latest episode of “When I Was 17,” which premiered Saturday at 11 a.m. “We’d be carrying boom boxes around in our book bags like we were straight out of the ’80s,” Roth’s friend Brian recalled. “We started meeting regularly around school.” Before hanging with Hef, former “Girl Next Door” Kendra Wilkinson remembers eyeing her high school soccer coach. “Soccer was my love,” the California girl said. “I had a huge crush on my soccer coach. He was like the hottest thing to ever exist … I would totally flirt with him. I would wear shorter shorts than the other girls on purpose.” Holly Madison and Bridget Marquardt said Wilkinson would act like she didn’t know what she was doing on the soccer field to get more attention from the studly coach. “I loved just having my soccer coach just yelling at me. It turned me on,” Wilkinson said. Kendra also reminisces about how she was freaked out when seeing windmills turning with no wind and hearing a crying baby at a cemetery. On the show, MTV reality-show vet Kelly Osbourne also looks back at her time in an American school and her first tattoo experience. “For me, it’s really the idea of having a tattoo than actually having it because once you have it, you’re like, ‘alright, ugly.’ Kelly’s first impressions of the American school system were also unique. “In England, I just went to school,” she said. “In America, I had to figure out if I was a jock, a nerd, a cheerleader — there are social groups for everything.” “When I Was 17” airs Saturdays at 11 a.m. on MTV. Kendra Wilkinson Recalls Flirting With Coach On ‘When I Was 17’

The reality-TV bombshell looks back at her high school soccer career on the latest episode, premiering Saturday at 11 a.m. By Mawuse Ziegbe Kendra Wilkinson appears on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV News Kendra Wilkinson has made her mark as a bubbly tomboy-ish sexpot, graduating from Hugh Hefner’s trio of girlfriends to the wife of NFL player Hank Baskett. It appears the giggly star of the E! reality series “Kendra,” which delves into her life as a party-girl-turned-homemaker and mom, got an early start mixing her love life with sports. “Soccer was my love. I had a huge crush on my soccer coach. He was like the hottest thing to ever exist,” Wilkinson says on the latest episode of “When I Was 17,” premiering Saturday at 11 a.m. Wilkinson admits she went to extra lengths to get the attention of her extra-hot coach, including altering her uniform to show off her gams. “I would totally flirt with him. I would wear shorter shorts than the other girls on purpose.” Wilkinson’s brazenness didn’t end with hiked-up shorts. The starlet, who first made a pop-culture splash as regular on “The Girls Next Door,” cavorting about the fabled Playboy Mansion with Hefner and his other girlfriends, Holly Madison and Bridget Marquardt, says she would pretend to suck at soccer to get more face time with her swoonworthy coach. “We would have to run, and I would purposely be the last because he would be there behind me going, ‘C’mon Kendra, c’mon!’ ” Wilkinson remembers. “I just loved that. I loved just having my soccer coach just yelling at me. It turned me on.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Kendra Wilkinson, Asher Roth and Kelly Osbourne — premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. B.o.B Says All City Chess Club Side Project Is ‘Fun And Creative’

Supergroup also includes Lupe Fiasco, Asher Roth, J. Cole, Charles Hamilton, the Cool Kids, Diggy Simmons, Wale and Blu. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Steven Roberts B.o.B Photo: MTV News Last month, Lupe Fiasco introduced a new super crew via Twitter when he sent a dispatch about the All City Chess Club. The Chicago lyricist wrote that the members included himself, B.o.B , Asher Roth , J. Cole, Charles Hamilton, the Cool Kids, Diggy Simmons, Wale and indie rapper Blu. B.o.B told MTV News that the members are already brainstorming ideas. “The All City Chess Club is something that Lupe had the idea about, and me and Charles Hamilton were at a show, and he came up with the idea and talked to us about it, and we were down,” B.o.B said of the group’s genesis. “I feel like the respect level is mutual with all of us. And I’ve already done songs with Charles Hamilton, Lupe and Asher Roth. Basically, the whole concept of it is to have a project, a freelance project, that’s something fun and creative.” So far, nothing is concrete, and Lupe, Cole, Roth, the Cool Kids, Blu and Wale are all working on their own albums, while Hamilton is looking to resurrect his dormant career and Diggy Simmons is just introducing himself as an artist. The majority of the members are alumni of XXL ‘s Freshmen 10 lists. Roth, B.o.B. Blu, Wale and Hamilton graced the cover in ’09, while Cole was a part of the group that landed on the cover this year. Asher Roth Talks Working With ‘Genius’ Pharrell On Next Album

Plus: Game asks for DJ Skee’s assitance on The Red Room, in Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Matt Elias Asher Roth Photo: SRC/Universal Celebrity Favorites There’s a method to Asher Roth’s madness. He rapped over beats from the likes of the RZA, Q-Tip and J. Dilla on his mixtape Seared Foie Gras With Quince and Cranberry because you might hear him flow over original tracks by those super producers on his next album. One dude who is definitely working on Roth’s upcoming LP is Pharrell Williams — and Skateboard P might even serve as executive producer on the project. “We linked up in Miami,” Roth said of the Williams sessions. “Very good chemistry as far as creating music. We was down there while it was all snowy in New York. We had a blast. I think we have some really beautiful music for warm weather. “He really is a genius,” Roth gushed. “Working with him, it’s really fast. We wound up doing 12 records in 12 days, which is really good numbers. It’s quick. He gets an idea and he harnesses that idea really quick. It’s cool when someone like me gets to step into the studio with him. I feel it’s probably different vibes. … I feel like it’s different vibes. Even though he works with everyone from Britney to the Clipse, he can do that because he stays in his lane. He stays true to himself. He’s got a very real sound he’s harnessed with the Neptunes stuff; he’s got a real sound he’s harnessed with N.E.R.D. We wrote 12 different records. We didn’t try to write one record 12 times — we have stuff all over the map, from live drums that are going to incorporate itself well into a live show … I’m excited for you guys to hear that stuff.” The Streets Is Talking: News and Notes From the Underground Game’s new mixtape The Red Room is set to drop very soon, but there has been a slight change in the lineup — instead of making the mixtape a Gangsta Grillz and putting it out with DJ Drama, Game said he secured the services of DJ Skee. “I immediately called Skee, but he was in Toronto,” Game said about reaching out to Skee once he and Drama amicably agreed to part ways on the project. “He got back, came in and then the tape took a turn left, man. But it’s all good, man, ’cause me and Skee got history. Skee’s at home right now just going in working on it to get it out to the people ASAP. So there ain’t no love lost to Drama, I talk to him. He asked me if there wasn’t gonna be anymore G-Unit disses on the tape and I was like, ‘Not really,’ but I reserve the right to do whatever I want. So it’s probably best that I use Skee.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .

Asher Roth Serves Up ‘Positive’ Message On Seared Foie Gras Mixtape

‘Hopefully, I’mma stick around for a decade and be a voice of the next 10 years,’ Roth tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Asher Roth Photo: SRC/Universal This Week’s Main Pick Mixtape Maven : Asher Roth Holding It Down For : The Big Apple? He just moved to NYC Mixtape : Seared Foie Gras with Quince and Cranberry Real Spit : Asher Roth is in it for the long haul. He’s not just trying to make a quick dollar and skate — although there are aspects to the game that frustrate him. “I don’t wanna be one of those dudes that’s just like one, two three years, and I’m out,” Roth said, sitting in one of his favorite eateries, Hotel Griffou. “Make a quick dollar. ‘Let me go invest this in real estate.’ I see the opportunity to affect lives in a positive way. I see these 13-year old kids that get a hold of me and be like, ‘Yo, you changed my life.’ Am I 100 percent fulfilled? No. Not even remotely yet. But that’s a good thing. Hopefully, I’mma stick around for a decade and be a voice of the next 10 years. So when people look back, they said I actually added something instead of putting a pop song out that was popular.” Roth, for the most part, raps over beats that are already out there on the tape. He gives props to each producer by noting who the beat is “served by” on the track list. As for that far-out title, he said he tried the delicacy before knowing that foie gras was actually force-fed duck liver. Joints to Check For

Asher Roth Makes His NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Pick

While the MC says ‘America’s team is Butler,’ he ends up siding with the charmed Michigan State Spartans. By Steven Roberts Asher Roth Photo: MTV News It’s safe to say that no one aced their bracket in this year’s upset-heavy NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. A few weeks back, Asher Roth invited a few celebs pals , including Taylor Swift and Devin the Dude, and hundreds of other bracketologists to compete in his Asher Roth’s 2010 NCAA Tournament Pick ‘Em League . Everyone thought they had the inside track on who would be cutting down the net in Indianapolis. Fast-forward a couple of weeks and a dozen upsets later, and we find Duke, Michigan State, West Virginia and Butler in the Final Four. MTV News recently caught up with a humbled Asher, who partnered with the sports-clothing company No Mas for the league, to see who he thought would win the big dance. “You know what? America’s team is Butler,” Roth said. “I hate Duke. I’m sorry. Go ahead and hate me, but I hate Duke. I can’t get down. To me, that’s just the easy way out. Michigan State just seems to have the charm with them, so you know what? I’m going to go ahead and say — well, West Virginia too, man.” Asher eventually decided on the Michigan State Spartans. He said the team out of East Lansing would surprise hoops fans and continue to play solid basketball, despite losing point guard Kalin Lucas to an injury. Roth did admit that he might not be the right guy to ask, however. “My bracket’s a mess, so you don’t even want to ask me about that,” he said. “I went wrong. I thought Kentucky was going to hold us down, all of the freshmen. I thought all of the freshmen were going to do it, even though DeMarcus Cousins is not a freshman. There’s no way that kid is a freshman.” Which team is your pick to win the national championship? Was your bracket as big a mess as Asher’s? Let us know in the comments below!
