Ashley Judd: "Obama’s Kentucky Candidate" Slammed By Mitch McConnell in New Ad

U.S. Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is clearly worried about running for reelection in 2014 against actress / Democratic activist Ashley Judd. He’s posted ANOTHER ad attacking her and she’s not even running yet! Ashley Judd Attack Ad – Obama’s Kentucky Candidate McConnell’s ad goes after Judd and three other possible Democratic challengers pretty hard, labeling them collectively “ Obama’s Kentucky Candidate .” The premise is that Obama is holding some sort of town hall meeting to pick Sen. McConnell’s opponent, and he goes from one person to the next. The video editing is clever and the result is humorous, no doubt. First up is Ed Marksberry, a former congressional candidate, then former U.S. Ambassador to Sweden Matthew Barzun, followed by Ashley Judd. Then President Obama calls on “the young lady with the pink, white blouse right there…. Wait until the microphone comes up introduce yourself.” Next thing you know, there’s Judd at the podium at last year’s Democratic convention, saying, “From the Volunteer State, I proudly stand to nominate … “ “Whoa, whoa, whoa,” goes Obama in the reaction shot, cut to make it appear as if he disapproves of the fact that she’s actually a resident of Tennessee. The 44-year-old was a 2012 Democratic National Convention delegate from the Volunteer State, not from Kentucky, where she was born and raised. The ad goes on to make it abundantly clear that possible Senate candidate Ashley Judd is not a Kentucky resident and is close with Barack Obama. Kentucky went big for Mitt Romney last fall, so it’s not a bad strategy … but it begs the question: Why is McConnell running this ad so early, if at all? Why did he run the previous ad attacking her alone , when she hasn’t even said if she’s running in an election that takes place 21 months from now? Well, only 17 percent of Bluegrass State voters said they would be sure to support McConnell – the GOP’s highest-ranking U.S. Senator – in 2014. Even in a conservative state, he is LITERALLY the least popular member of the entire Senate, a walking embodiment of partisan gridlock and obstruction. It’s possible that leaves an opening for Judd. Al Cross, associate professor of journalism at the University of Kentucky and political columnist, writes: “It’s safe to say that if she ran, she could put in big money, raise a lot more and perhaps put McConnell under unprecedented scrutiny at a time when he’s not all that popular.” In short, expect more ads like this … for the next two years.

Ashley Judd Divorce to Clear Path For Senate Run?

News that Ashley Judd and Dario Franchitti , her race car driver husband of 11 years, are divorcing has only fueled speculation over her possible U.S. Senate bid. While conventional wisdom would suggest that a sad personal matter might shelve plans to run for public office, some say in Judd’s case it makes it more likely. Kentucky Democrats want her to run , saying the eighth-generation Kentucky native is an ideal candidate to take on GOP Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in 2014. The politically active actress was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention this summer, so Sen. Ashley Judd is not a totally crazy concept. Her impending divorce, while upsetting, may mean it’s more likely she’ll try, not less. Her husband is Scottish, and the couple also lived part-time in Scotland, which is inconvenient and not exactly a political asset when running in Kentucky. Now she can bill herself as making a clean sweep of things, including non-Kentucky residencies, and say she’s coming home to the place she belongs. Despite his powerful Senate post, McConnell is also vulnerable. A recent Courier-Journal Bluegrass poll found that only 17 percent of voters said they’d vote for him. Meanwhile, 34 percent said they would vote against him, and 44 percent said they would wait to see who McConnell runs against. So the door is open. Also, there’s the increasing possibility that Republican McConnell will face a primary challenge from a right-wing Tea Party candidate, and lose. Judd against a far-right candidate with less name recognition and establishment power begins to sound like an even more winnable race for Dems. Not that she doesn’t have weaknesses, not the least of which being a Hollywood celebrity in a state where that couldn’t matter less to the average voter. The same star power and visibility it affords her can also hamper her, in other words, along with various liberal positions in a relatively conservative state. What do you think? Would Ashley Judd make a good U.S. Senator?

Ashley Judd and Dario Franchitti: It’s Over!

Dario Franchitti and Ashley Judd are calling it quits after 10 years of marriage. The former couple said in a statement announcing their plans to divorce: “We have mutually decided to end our marriage . We’ll always be family and cherish our relationship based on the special love, integrity, and respect we have always enjoyed.” Ashley Judd, 44, and Dario Franchitti, 39, driver tied the knot in a highly private ceremony in Scotland in 2001 after being engaged for two years before that. Racecar driver Franchitti competes in the IndyCar Series where he was 2007 champion, and he even won the rain-shortened 2007 Indianapolis 500. Judd’s acting credits are well known, but is a run for office in her future? She’s been talked about as a possible 2014 Senate candidate in Kentucky, where Democrats want her to challenge GOP Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Peter O’Toole’s Drunkest Hits (Cont’d)

The fun never ends: “When filming 1960’s Kidnapped , he became friends with the Australian actor Peter Finch, also a fond boozer. When they were refused a drink after closing time during a session at an Irish pub, they wrote a cheque to buy the pub so they could have another drink. Having sobered up the next day, they rushed back to cancel their purchase. They ended up befriending the landlord, even attending his funeral. While sobbing as the casket was lowered, the pair soon realised they were at the wrong funeral. Their pal was being buried 100 yards away.” [ The Independent ]

REVIEW: Farewell, My Queen Moves Slowly, But It’s Got Sensuousness on Its Side

Snoozy but sumptuous, Benoît Jacquot’s quasi-historical drama Farewell, My Queen isn’t going to set the world aflame: The experience of watching it is something like lounging on a satin divan, being fanned lazily with a bouquet of ostrich plumes. But maybe that’s part of what you want in a picture about the last days of Marie Antoinette’s rule: The languorousness of Farewell, My Queen recalls the last days of summer, though in this case the air is quivering not with the chirping of crickets but with a whisper of foreboding. The picture coasts along quite nicely on the strength of its contemplative sensuality, its macaron colors, and the exquisite beauty of its three chief actresses, Léa Seydoux, Virginie Ledoyen and Diane Kruger. Oh, and there’s nudity in it too, not to mention lesbian undertones – or are they overtones? I knew that would get your attention. Kruger plays Marie Antoinette, and in our first glimpse of her, she’s just awakened from what must have been a hell of a beauty sleep: Bedecked in a cream-colored nightie and sitting up in her bed at Versailles, she looks fresh and creamy and glowing, like a prized blond peach. One of her servants, the quiet but astute Sidonie Laborde (Seydoux), has come to read to her. Shall it be a novel or a fashion magazine today? It quickly becomes clear that Sidonie harbors a special fondness for her mistress and seeks to protect her from the gossip of the court — or worse. Meanwhile, the queen lavishes attention and worry on her own special favorite, the regal and somewhat icy Gabrielle de Polignac (Ledoyen). Sidonie hopes that someday the queen will single her out; but her hopes are dashed when she learns that her mistress has a special task in mind for her, one that could demand the ultimate sacrifice. There are men in Farewell, My Queen : Xavier Beauvois plays Louis XVI, and Michel Robin appears as his historiographer. But really, who cares about them? The picture also gives an appropriate sense of the court’s decadence while being only marginally tolerant of the queen’s taste for expensive finery: I suspect that Farewell, My Queen is the movie that many of the detractors of Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette wanted that picture to be. Coppola didn’t want to punish her heroine, and her refusal to bow to that kind of moralism turned off plenty of people who thought the movie should have been more politically astute. But Farewell, My Queen — which was based on the novel by Chantal Thomas — is in its own way sympathetic to the ill-fated ruler. One servant claims to understand why Marie Antoinette spends hours staring at her accumulated luxury goods: “That’s how she forgets she’s queen.” She also longs for love, and her ardor for Gabrielle appears to skim lightly over any perceived impropriety of feelings or behavior. Her desire is only partly carnal; it seems that Gabrielle is a kind of sisterly twin to her. Seydoux’s Sidonie registers all of this not with pouty disappointment but with greater resolve, and, ultimately, a resignation that’s a kind of victory. Meanwhile, she’s the most overtly sensuous of the three: Kruger’s beauty is fine-grained and luminous, and Ledoyen’s is cool as pink marble, but Seydoux has both brains and a thumping pulse. The picture’s painterly production design and cinematography (by Katia Wyszkop and Romain Winding, respectively) ensure that everything is gorgeous to look at, but Jacquot never lets the picture slide into total sterility – even the sight of Seydoux scratching her mosquito bites is vaguely libidinous. Farewell, My Queen may move along at a stately pace, and it may not cut very deep. But even if it’s essentially little more than a pretty porcelain figurine, it’s one that at least nods to the glow and warmth of real flesh. Follow Stephanie Zacharek on Twitter . Ashley Judd Defends Appearance, Rails Against Society’s "Hatred of Women"

Combating critics of her appearance once again, Ashley Judd went off on the sexualization, objectification and hatred of women she perceives in society. Stories about Judd’s puffy face , caused by the medication she had been taking for a sinus infection, gave way to plastic surgery rumors in recent weeks. Rumors that did not sit well with the Missing star, who is assailing critics left and right over this “sad commentary” on our obsession with appearance. “I think it’s hatred of women that invites the criticism,” the actress told NBC. Ashley Judd Interview “I think it’s the objectification of girls and this hypersexualization of our society. It doesn’t have anything to do with me, really, and how I look.” Judd says the reaction to her appearance was as swift as it was negative. “There was no presumption of goodwill,” she says, and that’s what pushed her over the edge. “The conversation went straight to, ‘Oh my gosh.'” Particularly galling, besides the “nasty, vitriolic and gloating tone,” she added, was the speculation that the 43-year-old had plastic surgery. “I started to catch the double bind where, you know, my face looks puffy, ‘She’s had work done,’ you know?” Judd says, noting the irony. “Then, look at the same image in a different interpretation by a separate set of people is, ‘Oh, come on, she doesn’t even have any wrinkles at all, she’s clearly had work.'” “So, I look bad, I’ve had work. I look too good, I’ve had work.” Judd said she decided to address this incident “because the conversation was pointedly nasty, gendered, and misogynistic and embodies what all girls and women in modern culture, to a greater or lesser degree, endure every day.” This happens “in ways both outrageous and subtle,” she says. Do you agree?
