‘They’re like $80 million in the hole,’ Fif jokes to MTV News about Def Jam. By Rob Markman, with reporting by James Smith 50 Cent When 50 Cent signed G-Unit artists Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo over to EMI , the plan was to set up his longtime Queens, New York, cohorts as artists who could work independently, without his help. Fif told MTV News that Banks’ The Hunger for More 2, which was released last November, was the project that set the trend. “Banks’ project is the beginning of them flying solo, flying without my assistance so much,” 50 said on the Atlanta set of Tony Yayo’s upcoming “Haters” video. In the past, Fif lent his guidance as well as his voice to his artists’ albums. Back in 2004, the G-Unit General appeared alongside Banks on “On Fire,” the first single from the Punch Line King’s platinum debut. He did the same with Yayo’s first single, “So Seductive,” the following year. “Like on all their other albums and singles, I was featured on their projects to help bring attention to it and get ’em off into the right space,” he said. “This go-around is, like, for them to go away from me and do it on their own. They’re setting up shop on their own on this project.” It’s been reported that Banks’ and Yayo’s EMI deal is structured much like an indie. Even though EMI is a major distributor, G-Unit has taken the reins when it comes to positioning both rappers in the marketplace. Even though 50 has championed G-Unit’s independence, speculation has swirled about whether Banks would sign to Def Jam where former G-Unit president Sha Money XL now resides as the Senior VP of A&R . 50, without saying it directly, shot down the notion of a Def Jam deal, citing the label’s supposed-financial woes. Recently, the legendary rap label has gone through a bit of restructuring with former head honcho L.A. Reid leaving and Barry Weiss stepping in as chairman and CEO. Regardless, Fif doesn’t seem too optimistic for a future at the label. “Well, Def Jam, I’m not even sure what that system — that system is not in a good space right now. The Situation’s got something for that. November saw the expansion of the already formidable empire of the bulging star of MTV’s “Jersey Shore” — which already included an advice book and a line of protein-infused vodka — with the release of a brand-new workout DVD that might be the perfect antidote for too much holiday indulgence and not enough GTL. The DVD is appropriately titled “The Situation Workout,” and, as Sitch told MTV News, that’s about all you really need to know. “I really think it’s just the name in itself. As soon as someone hears the name ‘Situation,’ they’re gonna kind of know that it’s gonna be good,” he said. “It’s really the first workout DVD that’s entertaining. You’re gonna get some humor out of it, and it’s not only a workout, it’s entertaining to watch.” And while you wait to develop that six-pack, you could always draw attention away from your midsection with another Situation product, “shoelery,” as in: jewelry for your shoes. According to the Situation, there’s a vast and untapped market out there for footwear bling, and with the assistance of a company called Luxury Laces, he’s hoping to tap that market. “Nobody’s got that,” he said. “I’m in the process of trying to trademark that.” Of course, in between workouts, you’ll also need to relax. According to the Post, Top officials in President Hamid Karzai’s government have repeatedly derailed corruption investigations of politically connected Afghans, according to U.S. officials who have provided Afghanistan’s authorities with wiretapping technology and other assistance in efforts to crack down on endemic graft. In recent months, the U.S. officials said, Afghan prosecutors and investigators have been ordered to cross names off case files, prevent senior officials from being placed under arrest and disregard evidence against executives of a major financial firm suspected of helping the nation’s elite move millions of dollars overseas… For the Obama administration, the ability of Afghan investigators to crack down on corruption is crucial. If American voters see Karzai’s government as hopelessly corrupt, public support for the war could plunge. Corruption also fuels the Taliban insurgency and complicates efforts to persuade ordinary Afghans to side with leaders in Kabul. What affect will or should this corruption have on the domestic policy debate over the Afghan war? I just love him to death. I kept telling him that he needs to have kids, because I think he’s going to be an amazing dad. In a promo for the Movie Awards, Ansari and Sarah Silverman get derailed while writing a script for Zac Efron. By Josh Wigler Between announcing new movies and preparing for his responsibilities as the host of the 2010 MTV Movie Awards , Aziz Ansari has little free time on his hands. But just as there’s always room for Jell-O, there’s always time for squirrels on water skis. In a new commercial promoting the awards show, Ansari seeks out the assistance of his friend and fellow comedian Sarah Silverman to help write some material to support the MTV Movie Awards , airing Sunday, June 6, at 9 p.m. ET on MTV. “We will, we will,” a distracted Silverman tells Ansari, before inviting him over to her laptop. “But look at this.” On Silverman’s computer is the one thing in the world — well, one of few things — that could possibly derail Ansari’s work ethic: an adorable video of a water-skiing squirrel. The hilarious YouTube video causes a nonstop three-day distraction for both Ansari and Silverman that doesn’t end until Zac Efron shows up at their doorstep ready for work. “I’m supposed to shoot a promo for the MTV Movie Awards, but I didn’t get a script,” he tells Ansari and Silverman. “Do you guys know what we’re doing?” Luckily for the “17 Again” star, Ansari and Silverman have put their three days of squirrel watching to good use by coming up with “a great idea” for a promotional spot — an idea that unsurprisingly involves water-skiing, Zac Efron’s head photoshopped on a squirrel and plenty of laughs.
