Irrigation May Reduce Climate Change. Not Good News.

Image credit: GenBug (Creative Commons) With all the evidence of human-induced global warming , you’d think it would be good news that some of our activities, like releasing aerosols for example, are also helping to cool the atmosphere. Unfortunately, often the opposite is true. This is starkly illustrated by a new study showing the regional cooling effects of mass irri… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Blast from Past: Dick Cavett ‘Genuinely Ashamed’ of Americans for Opposing the Mosque

In Monday’s “Best of the Web Today” compilation , the Wall Street Journal’s James Taranto highlighted a New York Times online column posted Friday, from “superannuated erstwhile TV host Dick Cavett,” who “reports that the mosque controversy brought back childhood memories.” Cavett recalled World War II when he “heard an uncle of mine endorse a sentiment attributed to our Admiral ‘Bull’ Halsey: ‘If I met a pregnant Japanese woman, I’d kick her in the belly.’”          In the post provocatively titled “ Real Americans, Please Stand Up ,” as if those who disagree with him are not “real” Americans – at least they aren’t to the New York Times editors — Cavett then equated feticide with peaceful opposition to the mosque near Ground Zero: These are not proud moments in my heritage. But now, I’m genuinely ashamed of us. How sad this whole mosque business is. It doesn’t take much, it seems, to lift the lid and let our home-grown racism and bigotry overflow. We have collectively taken a pratfall on a moral whoopee cushion. Later he denigrated mosque critics as he derided “airborne sludge” from Rush Limbaugh: A heyday is being had by a posse of the cheesiest Republican politicos (Lazio, Palin, quick-change artist  John McCain and, of course, the self-anointed St. Joan of 9/11, R. Giuliani). Balanced, of course by plenty of cheesy Democrats. And of course Rush L. dependably pollutes the atmosphere with his particular brand of airborne sludge.

Scrubbing CO2 From Atmosphere Could Be A Centuries-Long Commitment

photo: Sarah McD via flickr Regardless of what methods are used, from hard geoengineering artificial CO2 scrubbers to softer methods like reforestation projects , actively removing carbon from the atmosphere will likely require a decades or centuries-long commitment if it is to really reverse global wa… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Woman Builds Home From 747 Airplane

Wow, how “green” of her. I wonder how much carbon she added to the atmosphere with that twin engine helicopter dragging all those pieces up to her site? Quite true its not green, but its still damn cool. Video after the jump here: http://kaktusjack.com/2010/woman-builds-home-from-747-airplane/ added by: Kaktus_Jack

Australia Open-Sourcing Ocean Data With New Integrated Marine Information System

Photo via kevwhelan The common estimate is that humans have explored only 95% of the world’s oceans. Considering they cover about 75% of the planet’s surface and hold vast amounts of flora and fauna, yet is incredibly fragile and suffering terribly from abuse by humans and changes in the chemistry of our atmosphere, it’s no wonder that researchers want to collect as much data as possible into one place so that we can better understand this watery resource. Australia – home of such marine treasures as the Great Barrier Reef – appreciates the importance of this task and has p… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Boston ended Lakers’ 9-0 home court streak in the playoffs, series now tied at 1-1

Series is now tied at 1-1, Rajon Rondo did everything on the court while Ray Allen fired basket after basket around the 3 point area. Allen scored game the high with 32 points, displaying his prowess in 3 point shooting. Hitting 8 out of 11 from beyond the three point line. Rajon Rondo finished the game with a triple-double 19 points, 10 assists and 12 rebounds to end Lakers’ 9-0 home games winning streak in the post-season. “An entire team effort,” Rondo said. “Ray carried us through the first half. Second half, we got in a little slump but we stuck with it, stayed together and got a victory.” Kobe Bryant had 21 points and his playing minutes were just limited to 34 minutes due to foul trouble. He got his fifth personal foul at the start of fourth quarter. Pau Gasol had 25 points and grabbed eight boards for the Lakers, and Andrew Bynum added 21 points with 7 blocks. Boston’s dynamic guards dictated the tempo of the game, making the Lakers lose their first home loss throughout the post-season. The game tied 11 times throughout the game, and lead changed 22 times down the stretch. Rondo’s layup at the 3:20 mark in the fourth period changed the complexion of the game. That layup gave Celtics a boost that made them pull away. Kevin Garnett then hit a jumper after another possession of sticky defense. Rajon Rondo hit another jumper to give Celtics a 5 point lead, 95-90. Lakers fell short down the stretch. This game is tough to swallow for the Lakers after coming in with all the momentum following a decisive victory in Game 1 Thursday. “Everyone was just pissed off,” said Bynum of the atmosphere in the locker room following the Lakers first home loss this postseason. “The coaching staff told us that this might be the last time we play here. I think that woke everybody up.” The defending champs will now have to make their adjustments as they head on the road. This postseason, the Lakers sport a 4-4 road record. They need to steal one road game to atleast even up the series. Games 3 and 4 will be in Boston. And return home in Game 5. “There’s no doubt it’s a blow to use to lose the homecourt,” Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. “But we anticipated this might happen, and we’re just going to have to go pick it up.” Game 3 will be on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, 9PM ET at TD Garden, Boston, MA More Info.. Air Force’s Falcon Hypersonic Glider Disappears Mysteriously

The Air Force's Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2—designed to attack global targets at Mach 20—has disappeared nine minutes into its first test flight, just after separating from its booster. Contact was lost, and it hasn't been found yet. The Falcon was supposed to splash down in the Pacific Ocean after a 30-minute, 4,100-nautical-mile test flight. Not to be confused with the unmanned X-37B space shuttle—which launched on April 22—the Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2 blasted off last week from the Vandenberg Air Force Base on a Minotaur IV rocket. Instead of completing its flight, however, the Air Force lost all contact with the aircraft. According to DARPA's Johanna Spangenberg Jones: Preliminary review of data indicates the HTV-2 achieved controlled flight within the atmosphere at over Mach 20. Then contact with HTV-2 was lost. This was our first flight (all others were done in wind tunnels and simulations) so although of course we would like to have everything go perfectly, we still gathered data and can use findings for the next flight, scheduled currently for early 2011. Just that: The telemetry data signal vanished, and the aircraft is nowhere to be found. Being a semi-secret project, nothing else has been disclosed. The only logical explanations are 1) a massive structural failure, 2) Nazi UFOs or 3) somebody lost it in a beer garden. I will pick number two for the time being. The hypersonic glider is built by Lockheed Martin under a DARPA program. It's designed to launch conventional weapons against any target in the planet in just one hour. This capability makes it a perfect substitute for Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles. Unlike ICBMs loaded with conventional heads, the plane can't be mistaken with a nuclear missile, so it won't make other nuclear powers to hit the red button. Maybe. http://gizmodo.com/5526308/air-forces-falcon-hypersonic-glider-disappears-myster… added by: pjacobs51

Joan Rivers at Tribeca: ‘I Was Never the Pretty One’

Maybe it was the rain. On a night when the Tribeca Film Festival’s packed hometown premiere of the documentary Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work glowed with the promise of its post-screening conversation between Rivers and her catty confidante Rex Reed, the atmosphere was overtaken by a more subdued, contemplative mood between the pair. At least until the point when Rivers called out that 88-year-old “bitch” Betty White.
