Venice Opener The Reluctant Fundamentalist Takes On Culture Clash

Indian-born filmmaker Mira Nair said that 9/11 formed part of the inspiration for her latest film, The Reluctant Fundamentalist , which kicked off the Venice Film Festival Wednesday evening. Just days before the attacks, Nair won the festival’s top prize, the Golden Lion, for her much praised Monsoon Wedding and she left the fabled Italian city for the Toronto International Film Festival to promote the film when the attacks happened. Like other New York residents, she was stranded in the Canadian city following the tragic event, taking her a week to get back to NYC and her husband and son. When she did make it back, she felt an “otherness” in the post-9/11 period, a theme she explores in her latest feature. “It was quite shocking when I got back because it felt like images I had seen in my part of the world, refugee camps, helicopters, a sense of war, a war zone, and it was in our backyard,” she said in Venice Wednesday as reported by A.P. “And so suddenly, (New York) became a place where people who looked like us were ‘the other.’ And that was painful, and that was also part of the inspiration to try to make this film.” Based on the novel by Mohsin Hamid, British-born musician and actor Riz Ahmed plays Changez a gifted financial analyst whose allegiance to America is questioned following the 9/11 attacks. Changez travels to the Pakistani city of Lahore re-connecting with his routes. Liev Schreiber plays a journalist who interviews him in Lahore as a kidnapping crisis rages. Kate Hudson plays his girlfriend and Kiefer Sutherland plays his former Wall Street mentor in NYC flashback scenes. “[The novel is] essentially a dialogue between East and West,” Nair said in Venice. “”We all know there has been an enormous schism, a wall between East and West, since, in this last decade. So I sought very much in the dialogue between America and the Islamic world in The Reluctant Fundamentalist to really bring some sense of bridge-making, some sense of healing, a sense of community that goes beyond the stereotypes, goes beyond the myopia, goes beyond the ignorance.” [ Source: A.P. ]

Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd: New Couple Alert?

Dancing With the Stars’ Maksim Chmerkovskiy was photographed kissing fellow pro dancer co-star Peta Murgatroyd this weekend, sparking rumors of romance. On Saturday at the Encore Beach Club in Las Vegas, Maksim was there celebrating with Peta, who won Dancing With the Stars with Donald Driver last week. That wasn’t the only time the hard-bodied pair and rumored couple were spotted together in Sin City. Witnesses have seen them together all over Vegas. And, at the opening of Chmerkovskiy’s new dance studio in Connecticut on May 23, the pair stood arm-in-arm while he whispered in her ear. Hmm … “She’s had a crush on him for a long time,” a source tells People of Peta. “They are really great together. And he is very happy. It’s early but I think this will last. They’re a great match, a good couple. She says they’re not dating but they are. Everyone knows it.” Still, at the debut of the Dance With Me studio (which Maks opened with his brother Val and fellow pro Tony Dovolani), both danced around questions . “I’m here to support Maksim,” was all Murgatroyd would say about Chmerkovskiy, who wouldn’t directly address the nature of their relationship either. “I try to keep certain things private just because – what’s a politically correct way of saying it? It’s none of anybody’s business,” he said. “It’s very intimate and personal.” Yeah. They’re totally doing the horizontal Argentine tango. [Photo: Fame/Flynet]

THG Presents: Great Moments in Celebrity-Paparazzi Fights

Justin Bieber’s alleged attack on a member of the paparazzi – who accuses him of roughing him up and leaving him in need of medical attention – is clearly BS. Can you see Justin Bieber roughing someone up? Seriously? That’s beside the point, though. Whatever happened, Biebs’ altercation is just the latest in a long string of tense run-ins between stars and the media who cover the celebrity gossip we crave. Here’s a look back at seven of the most memorable: Bald Britney Spears Attacks Paparazzi 1. Britney Spears : After a downward spiral that saw her shave her head, file for divorce and deliver her second child in the span of a year, Spears suffered a meltdown in February 2007 that saw her violently attack a paparazzo’s car with an umbrella: 2. Russell Brand : Katy Perry’s ex recently gave a whole new meaning to the term “dropped call” as he grabbed a photographer’s iPhone and flung it through a nearby window. Brand later turned himself in after a warrant was issued for his arrest. 3. Kanye West : The rapper racked up three misdemeanor charges in 2008 after he was arrested for allegedly wrestling with a photographer at LAX, grabbing his camera and smashing it on the floor. The charges were eventually dropped. 4. Alec Baldwin . The actor, whose fiery temper has led to some nasty public incidents, was actually placed under citizen’s arrest in 1995 after he allegedly punched a cameraman and broke his nose. A jury determined that he had acted in self-defense. The comedian later joked, “Since Steve Jobs died I cannot bear to see anyone use an iPhone irreverently, what I did was a tribute to his memory .” 5. Sean Penn : The two-time Oscar winner reportedly found a photographer in his hotel bedroom in China and dangled him from the ninth-floor balcony. Penn, never one to hold back, was reportedly charged with attempted murder for that charade but fled the country before authorities could nab him. 6. Lindsay Lohan : Driving over a paparazzo’s foot is just one entry on her laundry list of legal woes. Some people simply should not drive cars. 7. Bieber . Just by getting in the guy’s grill, Justin earned our respect.

Jay Leno Sued Over Sikh Mitt Romney Joke

Jay Leno is facing more than criticism over his recent joke at Mitt Romney’s expense. A Bakersfield, Calif., resident is suing him over the Sikh comedic bit. The punchline of the joke was that Romney, the very wealthy businessman and GOP presidential candidate, spends his summers in a solid gold palace. Jay pulled up a photo of India’s Harmandir Sahib, the Golden Temple of Amritsar, an extremely sacred building in the eyes of the Sikh people. Jay Leno Mitt Romney Joke There’s been a lot of outrage among Sikhs, but one man, Dr. Randeep Dhillon took his religious fervor one step further, filing a libel lawsuit against Leno. Dhillon claims Jay is responsible for encouraging hatred and ridicule of his religion and is suing for general and punitive damages. The rationale there? According to Randeep, Leno’s Mitt Romney joke “falsely portrays the holiest place in the religion instead as a vacation resort owned by a non-Sikh.” LOL. Not to encourage Randeep suing us as well, but come on dog.

Kim Kardashian Actually Does Some Good

Reluktantly, we must give kredit where kredit is due: Kim Kardashian has donated $50,000 to The Trevor Project, an organization that provides suicide prevention assistance to lesbian, gay and bisexual teens. Kim raised those funds herself during a trip to the Cantor Fitzgerald offices in NYC last September, where she actually did some work on the trading floor. “The firm lost more than 600 employees in the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001 and on the 10th anniversary of the attacks, they donated all revenues from their trades to charities around the world,” Kardashian blogged soon after her visit. “I was honored to take part!” Darn her for saying something we cannot mock. Other celebrities involved in The Trevor Project include Kevin McHale, Daniel Radcliffe, Adam Lambert and Kathy Griffin.

Lady Gaga, Nas Join ‘I Will’ 9/11 Commemoration

MTV parent company Viacom recruits DJ Pauly D, Julianne Hough and others to answer ‘What will you do to remember?’ By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga speaks in the “I Will” 9/11 Commemoration PSA Photo: MTV News All this week, Americans will be taking time out to reflect and remember the terror attacks of September 11, 2001. As part of that commemoration, MTV parent company Viacom has teamed with artists including Lady Gaga , Nas , DJ Pauly D, Julianne Hough and Drake Bell to launch a national day of service campaign that asks, “What will you do to remember?” The multiplatform public service campaign is designed to inspire Americans to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the attacks by committing to good deeds, charity or volunteer service. Working with MyGoodDeed and HandsOn Network, organizers of this year’s September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, the “I Will” campaign asks participants, “Ten years later, what will you do to remember?” Beginning on Tuesday (September 6) through Sunday, Viacom’s networks will air specially produced “I Will” public service announcements featuring artists and actors, including Gaga, Fran Drescher, Pauly D, Nas, Hough and Bell, along with Viacom employees. “We were in disbelief,” Lady Gaga says in the promo, remembering how she as a New Yorker witnessed the attacks. “We all watched the second tower fall together.” “You almost feel a sense of helplessness,” Pauly D recalls, before pledging, “I will call all my family members on that day.” In addition to airing a series of PSAs across its Viacom networks, the company’s digital properties will also support “I Will” with a widget that allows visitors to upload their personal response to the question, “What will you do on 9/11 in tribute?” “Everyone was affected by the tragic events of September 11, which claimed the lives of so many family members, friends and colleagues,” said Philippe Dauman, president and CEO of Viacom, in a statement. “A decade later, we hope that our audiences and the entire Viacom family will pause to reflect on the profound impact of that day. We are proud to join this call to action and encourage everyone to make a personal tribute.” What will you do to remember 9/11?
