Solar Responds To Skepticim About Guru’s ‘Farewell’ Letter

‘We knew there was going to have to be a statement,’ Gang Starr MC’s associate says. By Shaheem Reid Guru and Solar Photo: 4sightmedia On a tremendously tough day for Gang Starr fans, the death of the duo’s MC, Guru (real name: Keith Elam) from cancer was announced by his associate Solar early Tuesday (April 20), and included a long “farewell” letter that Solar said was written by Guru in the weeks before his death. The tone of the letter was harsh toward DJ Premier, Guru’s former partner in Gang Starr. “I do not wish my ex-DJ to have anything to do with my name, likeness, events, tributes etc. connected in anyway to my situation including any use of my name or circumstance for any reason and I have instructed my lawyers to enforce this,” the letter reads in part. “I had nothing to do with him in life for over seven years and want nothing to do with him in death. Solar has my life story and is well informed on my family situation, as well as the real reason for separating from my ex-DJ. … “The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time. And we as a team were not afraid to push the envelope. To me this is what true artists do! As men of honor we stood tall in the face of small-mindedness, greed, and ignorance. As we fought for music and integrity at the cost of not earning millions and for this I will always be happy and proud, and would like to thank the million fans who have seen us perform over the years from all over the world. The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time and is my most creative and experimental to date. I hope that our music will receive the attention it deserves as it is some of the best work I have done and represents some of the best years of my life.” In the wake of the letter, fans, journalist and even some of Guru’s peers took to the Internet to question its authenticity. People close to Guru said it just didn’t sound like him, and many questioned how he could write a letter in such a weakened medical condition. Rapper Bumpy Knuckles (also known as Freddie Foxx), who worked extensively with Gang Starr, fumed on his Twitter page : “It’s an insult that websites would post a letter from a man who has been in a coma since Feb. R U serious? Do ur homework, journalist! Please,” he wrote in part. “Guru& DJ Premier made real hip-hop 2gether. No1 will ever be able to cloud that with fake letters and phony statements. Sites shld know better.” The Roots’ ?uestlove took to Twitter as well, referencing French MC Solaar, who worked with Guru on the Jazzmatazz project. “Only Solaar I wanna hear w/Guru is the remix Primo did from France’s MC Solaar back in 92 when he KILT (flipped) Miles’ ‘So What.’ … Not trying to bring negativity into the situation. But I do NOT believe he wrote that letter. 1) he was in a coma. 2) HE WAS IN A COMA!” “Just confused,” radio personality Miss Info wrote on Tuesday. “If Solar wrote this letter in Guru’s name to push agenda, it does Guru’s legacy a disservice (and their friendship too). All that Solar did in life for Guru, he undid in his passing if the words ‘I, Guru, am writing this letter’ are untrue…” Reader Rob sounded off on MTVNews.com on Tuesday: “The Guru ‘farewell’ letter reeks of fakeness.” On Tuesday afternoon, Solar spoke with MTV News about the controversy, saying that he and Guru had prepared the statement quite some time ago. “In some ways, I’ve been prepared for this,” Solar said about Guru’s death. “We got the news that it was terminal at the beginning of the year, that the cancer wasn’t turning around. So we knew. “He died yesterday. We both had hoped he would beat it,” Solar added. “It was a very inspirational, inspiring fight we fought.” He vehemently denied that the letter was not written by Guru. “I mean, it’s ridiculous,” he said. “Guru knew this time would come. The great artist he is, us being intelligent people, we knew there was going to have to be a statement relating to this. Unfortunately, there are those who have the wicked agenda, and just can’t accept that Guru and I have handled this thing as men and not children, and this is how men of honor handle their business. He arranged his press release. I’m the repository of Guru’s life story. I recorded his life story for book and for movies. We’re not foolish. He was diagnosed with cancer well over a year ago. It’s been operations and so forth. It would be ridiculous for him to not be prepared.” At press time, representatives for DJ Premier and Guru’s family had not responded to MTV News’ requests for comment. JWoWW aka Jenni Farley’s Hard Working Bra

I try very hard to keep trash like the Jersey Shore skanks off my site, but this Jenni Farley aka JWoWW chicks boobs have gotten my attention. I’d like to talk about something else, but her busted face and thick legs leave me no choice. Here they are at some nail salon stuffed nicely into a hard working sports bra. The only good thing that will come from this show is that JWoWW is such a retarded nickname that you know that crap is going to be with her until she’s a fat orange old lady somewhere in Newark.

Audrina Patridge And Kristin Cavallari Get It On

When I say they get it on, I really mean they went shopping because there’s nothing special about these pictures of The Hills nobodies Kristin Cavallari and Audrina Patridge , they’re just trying on shoes together, but two chicks trying on shoes is better than one. Unfortunately they’re not trying on anything sexy, unless you’re one of those weirdos who’s into feet. When are they going to hit the lingerie section? Maybe try on each other panties and compare camel toes. Now THAT would be a good post, maybe next time. Enjoy. more pictures of Audrina Patridge And Kristin Cavallari here

RIP Malcolm McLaren: Punk Rock Icon, 8-Bit Music Pioneer

We lost one of music’s true innovators yesterday. While Malcolm McLaren, may not be a name on the tips of the tongues of some post-Gen-Y’ers who might consider uploading the first Britney Spears album onto their ipods as “kickin’ it old school,” it is nonetheless an important name in music history who has even recently helped in the proliferation of 8-Bit music as an art form. McLaren, who succumbed to cancer at age 64, has made an influencial stamp that is still evident, even to those who may not have known who he was. “Mad, misunderstood genius” is a status that has been thrown around quite a bit to artists whose work was either hated or loathed. McLaren definitely fit that mold. (And understandably so.) The man who has been called “The King of Punk” came from beginnings as a London-based counter-culture clothier in the early 70’s. That path had somehow quickly taken him to briefly going stateside to manage punk pioneer act The New York Dolls, to being the creative marketing force who assembled The Sex Pistols, possibly the most definitive and seminal (albeit crudely stereotypical) vision of how “Punk Rock” would later be defined. The Sex Pistols, were, perhaps the greatest example of a proverbial middle finger to what he referred to as a “karaoke culture” that dominates pop music — especially today. In essence, the Pistols were just as much a concoction of strategic marketing as any other artificial pop or “boy” band that has ever existed. Yet, McLaren seemed to revel in the idea of agitation for agitation’s sake, and the Pistols, in their brief existence, certainly left their mark with outrageous lyrics and stunts during Punk’s late 70’s heyday. (Stunts like a public record contract signing outside Buckingham Palace pictured above.) It was a sort of nihilism that, while lacking a true ethos, reveled in the idea of life’s absurdities. While Socrates compared the truth-seeking nature of philosophy to a fly constantly stinging a horse, McLaren’s art carried the vanity of being petulant youth in perpetual dissent, always devoid of any societal responsibility. Perhaps, that idea, if anything, of “not giving a f**k” was the essence of what was dubbed “Punk Rock.” Releasing music in his own right, he was an unlikely early purveyor of the genre that would become known as Hip-Hop, with early 80’s hits like “Buffalo Gals” and “Double Dutch.” Throughout his own musical career, McLaren would embrace any form of music that stood out — even Opera ! However, in recent years, his attention had turned to what is known as “Chip” or “8-Bit” Music. He became fixated on the idea of extracting sound blips and bleeps from old, abandoned video game consoles and using them as makeshift media for music that continued to be a proverbial middle finger to the “karaoke culture.” As McLaren stated in a piece he contributed to Wired in 2003 : “Karaoke and authenticity can sit well together, but it takes artistry to make that happen. When it does, the results can be explosive. Like when punk rock reclaimed rock and roll, blowing the doors off the recording industry in the process. Or when hip hop transformed turntables and records into the instruments of a revolution. Now it’s happening again. In dance clubs across Europe and America, young people are seizing the automated stuff of their world – handheld game machines, obsolete computers, anything with a sound chip – and forging a new kind of folk music for the digital age.” The idea of making due with forgotten “low-tech” objects seemed to catch on with him as being in tune with the essence of his own brand of counter-cultural leanings. Was he a genius? I’m certainly not sure. Did any stunt he ever pulled have some deeper ideological or ethical meaning? Who knows? However, he was an undeniably important link in the evolution of Rock music from the stages of Punk to New Wave to Alternative to…whatever it is we have today. I’d say that was worth an acknowledgment and a brief music history refresher. RIP. malcolmmclaren – Sex Pistols – punkrock – Britney Spears – Buckingham Palace

iPhone’s Plus+ Developer, ngmoco, Excited For Apple’s Game Center Plans

Apple announced plans today to roll out their own system-wide social gaming network across iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad called Game Center. Several of these networks already exist — i.e. Plus+, OpenFeint — each vying for the attention of developers and consumers, hoping their network catches on and becomes the de facto platform standard. Instead, it looks like Apple will take that spot. What does this mean for companies like Plus+ developer ngmoco (aka the studio behind your latest obsession, We Rule )? Besides games, ngmoco’s been focused on pushing Plus+, one of the many social gaming networks that’s popped up in a number of games, attempting to tie them together. ngmoco president Simon Jeffery is actually applauding Apple’s efforts to unify their platform. “Game Center is an exciting first-party innovation for the ecosystem that reinforces much of what plus+ has already accomplished and proven out early in its life cycle,” said Jeffery in a n e-mail statement released to me this afternoon. “It will effectively clean up the social space on the iPhone, which has become confusing and cluttered to consumers due to the number of social gaming networks vying for attention. ngmoco has anticipated this move from Apple for some time, and is happy to see a cleaner developer and consumer experience on the horizon.” Plus+ incorporates achievements and friends lists across all of ngmoco’s games and other titles. Game Center will do this, too. ngmoco was one of the first companies to try and bring the vision of Xbox Live, PlayStation Network and other unifying online services to Apple’s expanding games platforms. Here’s why Jeffery doesn’t foresee Game Center tearing down what they’ve accomplished so far. “As we demonstrated at the recent GDC [Game Developers Conference], plus+ took a strategic shift in direction a few months ago toward being a service, and less about being a set of social gaming features,” he explained, while noting the recent hire of MySpace exec. Jason Oberfest. “plus+ is all about empowering monetization and discoverability mechanisms for the development community, and we have clearly demonstrated with games like We Rule that these mechanisms work.” ngmoco’s Plus+ might have started as Xbox Live for iPhone, but that’s not the case anymore, a vision no doubt accelerated by today’s news and understanding that Apple will likely dominate the space. iPhone OS 4.0, which includes the addition of Game Center, is scheduled for a summer launch. A private beta is now available for developers. The iPad version of the OS is coming in the fall. Have something to share? Sitting on a news tip? E-mail me . You can also follow me on Twitter .
