When Michael Rapaport ‘s documentary lens captured the behind-the-scenes drama between members of iconic rap group A Tribe Called Quest , his subjects took to the media to voice their discontent. But by the time Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest premiered at Sundance, Tribeca, and won the Audience Award at the L.A. Film Fest , Rapaport had earned all but one Tribe member’s public support.

First of four three-day festivals also features the Flaming Lips. By Mary J. DiMeglio Dave Matthews performs at the Caravan festival in Atlantic City on June 24, 2011 Photo: Getty Images ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey — For the first stop on its traveling roadshow, the Dave Matthews Band Caravan brought a rootsy collection of friends to dusty Bader Field on Friday. And even after a career-spanning set that included “Don’t Drink the Water,” “Satellite” and “Why I Am,” DMB still have plenty of hits to draw from for the next two headlining performances of their inaugural three-day festival. Matthews gave nods to almost all of the day’s supporting acts, mentioning Delta Spirit, Carolina Chocolate Drops and The Head & The Heart, and saying, “It was a pleasure to share the stage with Ray Lamontagne.” David Ryan Harris, who played Friday afternoon, joined the band for perennial crowd favorite “Jimi Thing” from their 1994 debut, Under the Table and Dreaming. Grammy-winning saxophonist Jeff Coffin proved his chops early, tearing into “You Might Die Trying.” Coffin has played with DMB since LeRoi Moore’s 2008 ATV accident and death. His Mu’tet ensemble was one of the first acts of the day. Also pulling double duty was guitarist Tim Reynolds, first appearing in the afternoon with TR3. Reynolds will also join Matthews for an acoustic set Saturday afternoon (June 25). A memorable aspect of any DMB show is the quirky frontman’s non sequiturs, and Friday night was no exception. Matthews shared these gems: “Facial hair is so transformative” and “Too much morphine will make you constipated,” after debuting a version of “Buena” by ’90s alt-rockers Morphine. Matthews unleashed his impressive wail on “Grey Street,” and the show took a romantic turn when the band followed “Crash” with “You and Me” and “Shake Me Like A Monkey.” Returning from a break, Matthews warned, “I think we might f— it up, but we’re gonna try anyway,” before his acoustic adaptation of Procol Harum’s 1967 classic “A Whiter Shade of Pale.” Another cover closed out the set, as the band stunned the audience by playing Led Zeppelin’s “Good Times Bad Times” for the first time ever in concert. Though not exactly channeling Robert Plant, Matthews did sound oddly unlike himself on the vocals, in a rendition highlighted by a deft guitar solo. And though, rather than returning for a second encore, the band ended 30 minutes shy of their scheduled 11 p.m. ending time, most in the audience, anticipating another two long days capped by three-hour DMB sets, seemed relieved to be shuffling off the grounds. Previously that evening, the Flaming Lips proved it’s never too early for them to bring the weird. Flanked by sunglass-wearing, bopping Dorothys, Scarecrows, Tin Men and Cowardly Lions, they shared their ultra-psychedelic take on Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon , playing the album in its entirety, interspersed with choice selections from “The Wizard of Oz.” Those looking for something lighter found instrumental jam band Lotus keeping it groovy as the sun set. An ocean breeze brought welcome relief from the hot and humid day as seagulls cruised overhead. O.A.R., Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley and Thievery Corporation join the caravan Saturday, while Sunday’s festivities will feature David Gray, Dr. Dog, Bassnectar and Michael Franti with Spearhead. The party travels to Chicago in July, returns to the East Coast in August for a weekend at New York’s Governors Island and wraps up at The Gorge in Washington in early September. Blake Lively appeared on Today this morning to promote Green Lantern and kind of addressed those pesky rumors flying around those sexy photos. The ALLEGED Blake Lively nude pictures surfaced about two weeks ago, promoting a response from her rep, who claimed that they are “100 percent fake.” One hacker begs to differ , but between that and photos of Blake hanging out with Leonardo DiCaprio, there’s a whole lot of Lively gossip these days! How does the actress handle all the scrutiny? “You know, getting into this business, [it’s] what comes into it,” Blake told Today . “You do it for the art, for the wonderful work that we get to do.” “Otherwise, you keep your head down, you keep to yourself.” Blake also discussed her new movie Green Lantern , which co-stars Ryan Reynolds, and how her character, Carol, gets to keep him in line. “Having someone like Ryan Reynolds, you’re hard-pressed to find someone who’s as witty and more charming than him,” she said. The movie opens this Friday.
Every now and then, The View panelists actually engage in an interesting discussion. Such was the case when the topic of Tracy Morgan, his recent anti-gay rant on stage and subsequent apology came up this week on the talk show. Whoopi Goldberg didn’t defend Morgan’s specific outburst, but did speak from experience as a comedian when she said this stuff just happens occasionally on stage: “Sometimes we step in it and it’s bad, and this is one of those times… when a comic has gone over the line and realized it. Not just because people told him, but because he realized it.” Whoopi Goldberg Defends Tracy Morgan Sherri Shepherd, who recurs opposite Morgan on 30 Rock as his character’s wife, said a working actor must also represent his show at all times. And Elisabeth Hasselbeck actually chimed in with a good question: Do the standards for a comedian change in this Internet age, when he/she must be aware that his/her audience expands beyond those in the audience? Should it?
Teen sensation made a surprise appearance to accept Best Jaw Dropping Moment prize. By Aly Semigran, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Justin Bieber backstage at the 2011 Movie Awards Photo: MTV News Talk about a jaw-dropping moment. Justin Bieber, who was not scheduled to appear at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards , dropped in unexpectedly to claim his Golden Popcorn in the Best Jaw Dropping Moment category for his 3-D concert spectacular “Never Say Never.” “It feels great. I’m so blessed,” Bieber told MTV News backstage. “I’m so glad to be back here and to have so many great fans. It’s a great night.” “Never Say Never” was a career-defining moment for Bieber and he’s fully aware of that fact. “It was great. It was my first time performing at Madison Square Garden and just being there and having that experience, I’m glad that I got to just have that experience. It was great.” After opening the envelope to reveal Bieber had bested his fellow nominees (which included did-that-just-happen scenes from “127 Hours,” “Black Swan,” “Inception” and “Jackass 3D”), “30 Minutes or Less” co-stars Danny McBride, Nick Swardson and Aziz Ansari were about to be in for an even bigger surprise than the upset victory itself. Ansari — who dressed up as Jaden Smith from “The Karate Kid,” only to discover Will Smith’s son wouldn’t be attending — cried after revealing Bieber’s name, “He’s not here! He’s not here!” The “Parks and Recreation” star then joked that the singing sensation wouldn’t be able to accept his first MTV Movie Award because, “He’s too busy burning a huge pile of cash in a private jet while he’s Skyping with Jaden Smith and Selena Gomez!” But apparently Bieber wasn’t too busy, as the 17-year-old (whose girlfriend, Selena Gomez , was in the audience) suddenly appeared from offstage wearing a “Miami Vice”-like outfit that included a blue blazer, white pants and sunglasses, causing the audience to erupt in the kind of screams that seem to follow him everywhere. After greeting the presenters, Bieber, who stood in the swirling stage fog, took to the microphone and told the crowd, “Thank you so much,” explaining that he showed up to the MTV Movie Awards because, “I couldn’t let down my fans.” Bieber went on to thank “Never Say Never” director Jon Chu, as well as his manager Scooter Braun, his family and, once again, his ever-supportive fans. “I love you!” he yelled before making a peace sign, which he signed off with a kiss. In a curious but pleasant development, a latecomer to the Cannes competition lineup, announced just a week before the festival began, has suddenly become a possible front-runner for the Palme d’Or. Michel Hazanavicius’ The Artist, a silent film shot in Hollywood in black-and-white, screened this morning, and its sly charms seemed to win over a sizable portion of the audience — including me.
