Lil Wayne Treats Hometown Fans To Surprise Appearances By Drake, Chris Paul

Weezy, Nicki Minaj soak up the love at New Orleans Arena. By Akshay Bhansali Lil Wayne performs in New Orleans on Thursday Photo: Akshay Bhansali/ MTV News “It’s good to be home, New Orleans,” hometown hero Lil Wayne told the audience after taking the stage at Hornets Arena in the Crescent City. And the sold-out crowd of his birthplace loved him for it. All of Weezy’s I Am Still Music tourmates hit the stage on Thursday night, including Porcelain Black, Mix Master Mike & Travis Barker, and Ricky Rozay Ross, with an appearance by buddy DJ Khaled, each giving it their all, and the crowd was with them ever step of the way. After launching into the first quarter of his performance, “A Milli” and “Got Money” (with fellow Nola MC Mack Maine), Wayne gave the city another series of nods. Before getting into “Go DJ,” Wayne called out to DJ 45, “We in my hometown! You got some bounce for me?” And later, in his homage to fallen hip-hop icons, Wayne called out, “And if you from New Orleans, put your hands up for Soulja Slim,” paying his respect to the late rap star. Nicki Minaj had the audience in a frenzy when, instead of her typical move of choosing an audience member to give a lap dance to, she asked the audience, “So, y’all are Hornets fans? Usually I invite someone from the audience onstage. But today, there’s someone special.” The decibel level in the arena rose exponentially as Chris Paul seemed not too displeased at handling the honors for the night. The famed Hornets point guard sat down with a smile as Nicki did … well, what Nicki does. Young Money was on full display when Jae Millz, Gudda Gudda and Mack Maine joined Wayne for “Every Girl.” Ace Hood came out to perform “Hustle Hard,” his single with Wayne. Lil Chuckee, Lil Twist, Gudda, Mack and Millz came out for “Bedrock,” and Birdman graced the stage for a fiery set of “Fire Flame (Remix).” Then Wayne pulled out his final surprise of the night: bringing out Drake for “Miss Me” and “Forever.” Dreezy relished the chance to speak to his New Orleans fans and once more quell any rumors that he was leaving the Young Money family . “I wanna say one very important thing to you before I go,” Drake said. “I wanna let you know that New Orleans was truly the birthplace of my career. Y’all were the first people to f— with my music, and I recognize that. And just know that I’m Young Money forever, and this is my mother—-ing brother, and I love you, man,” he said turning to Wayne. And just to make sure fans knew when to expect that Carter IV album , Weezy made the audience repeat the date back to him. May 16 it is! Rihanna Sings "California King Bed" on American Idol

Rihanna changed up her look yet again last night on American Idol, going back to long red curly locks after a week or so of wearing her hair much, much shorter. The 23-year-old singer showed her latest look as she performed her new single, “California King Bed” live. She started the song softly, tantalizing fans. As her dancers pulled down white draping onto the stage floor and into the crowd, Rihanna was eventually revealed and really ramped up the performance. She even threw in some air guitar as the audience went wild, earning her a standing O. Watch her performance from the American Idol results show here: Rihanna – California King Bed (American Idol)

American Idol Producer: Pia Toscano "Never the Frontrunner"

The American Idol judges were shocked that Pia Toscano was ousted on last week’s results show, and some fans are petitioning to bring her back. Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, however, is not up in arms. “I know the [voting] results, so I know she was never a frontrunner,” Lythgoe said . “The fact of the matter, it appears, is that Pia didn’t connect with the audience as much as maybe we think she did. And she wasn’t voted through.” To be fair, Nigel isn’t anti-Pia, he’s just stating facts . Nigel, who also produces and judges So You Think You Can Dance , did say that Idol could consider changing the voting format next year to mirror SYTYCD . On that show, America determines the bottom three, but the judges decide who leaves. That is ultimately a call for Idol creator Simon Fuller, Lythgoe said. What do you think? Would you rather have Steven, Randy and J. Lo make that call in order to prevent another shocking result like we saw last Thursday? Or, would stripping America of its final say actually hurt the format?

Pia Toscano Eliminated In ‘American Idol’ Shocker

Stefano Langone and Jacob Lusk join onetime front-runner in the bottom three. By Gil Kaufman Pia Toscano Photo: FOX All sense of logic was officially thrown out the window on “American Idol” on Thursday night’s (April 7) elimination show. With two of the season’s leading contenders in the bottom three — after last week’s shocking near-miss for Paul McDonald — there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the voting patterns on the 10th season of the show. When the dust settled, those confounding voters served up one of the biggest early elimination bombshells in recent “Idol” history, sending home the woman many had pegged as a potential winner, or at least top finisher, Pia Toscano. The comely singer who had charmed the judges with her professional, powerful performances, camera-ready looks and diva-in-the-making potential hit the bottom three for the first, and last, time on Thursday night in a vote that confounded and angered the judging panel. As host Ryan Seacrest broke the bad news, judge Randy Jackson — perhaps sensing that he pulled his save too early two weeks ago when bearded bass player Casey Abrams was spared — grabbed his head and mouthed “no, no” and, as the camera cut away, maybe something a bit stronger, while Toscano smiled politely and took the news like a pro. “I’m good,” Toscano smiled when Seacrest asked how she was doing. Judge Jennifer Lopez broke into tears, saying, “I have no idea. I have no idea what just happened here. I’m shocked, I’m angry. I don’t even know what to say.” “They’re wrong, I don’t know what happened with this,” a dumbfounded Steven Tyler added, as Jackson admitted that he never gets mad on the show and was officially steamed at Toscano’s elimination. It was not shaping up like this earlier in the hour. Casey Abrams, Stefano Langone and Lauren Alaina were first up in the elimination circle, with Abrams skating after his CCR bass-plucking performance, Alaina safe after biting off a big chunk with “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” leaving Langone to shuffle to the bottom three again after a lackluster “When a Man Loves a Woman.” From early indications, it seemed like it was Langone who was going to be leaving. The second group featured Paul McDonald, Toscano and Scotty McCreery . McDonald rocked Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues,” while Pia went uptempo with Tina Turner’s “River Deep, Mountain High” and McCreery did Elvis’ “It’s Alright Mama.” McCreery and McDonald will live to sing another day, while nobody saw it coming when Toscano made her first visit to the bottom three. The next trio up was James Durbin, Haley Reinhart and Jacob Lusk. While rocker Durbin took a chance with the gentle ballad “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” and Reinhart hit “Piece of My Heart” with gusto, Lusk seemed to stumble with “Man in the Mirror.” Durbin was safe again, as was Reinhart, while Lusk also made his maiden voyage to the bottom. He, too, seemed like the likely one to be sent packing at show’s end. But first to be waved back to safety was Lusk, who survived despite a shaky performance and a strange warning to America that if he was eliminated it would be because the country couldn’t look itself in the mirror (whatever that means). Though eliminated contestants haven’t been given a chance to sing their way off this year, Seacrest made an exception and let Toscano reprise her heartbreaking cover of the Pretenders’ “I’ll Stand by You,” as the remaining eight wiped their eyes and the audience gave Pia a standing ovation while she broke down in tears at song’s end. Perhaps sensing that one of the leading lights of the show had been dimmed and the audience might wane in the coming weeks, Seacrest ended the show with the plea: “We need you. Stay with us this season.” The show also featured season-four finalist and Tony nominee Constantine Maroulis stopping by to visit the kids and sing a brooding rock version of the classic ballad “Unchained Melody.” But, aside from Pia’s exit, the night’s biggest WTF moment was when Rock Hall of Famer and shirt-allergic punk godfather Iggy Pop shimmed all over the stage to “Real Wild Child.” What did you think of tonight’s elimination? Did Pia deserve to go home? Let us know in the comments. Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. ‘Source Code’ Requires A ‘Leap Of Faith,’ Director Says

Duncan Jones says if moviegoers can suspend disbelief, they’ll ‘go with it and enjoy the ride.’ By Kara Warner Michelle Monaghan and Jake Gyllenhaal in “Source Code” Photo: Summit Entertainment In most cases, when we travel to the theater or sit down to watch movies, we’re looking to be swept up by a great story, transported to other realms and just plain entertained. In doing so, however, there is an element of suspended disbelief that both filmmakers and audiences alike rely on in order to fully immerse themselves in a story. And while the upcoming thriller “Source Code” is based in present-day reality, there are several elements that draw on the sci-fi and fantastical genres and, as such, rely on the audience to suspend disbelief a bit. When MTV News caught up with director Duncan Jones recently, we asked him to explain his strategy for presenting audiences with challenging ideas without making them too convoluted or confusing. “Ben Ripley wrote the script, and I thought it was terrific,” Jones said. “I thought, ‘There are some heady ideas here,’ and I think he’s done a really good job of balancing what the audience needs to know and giving the audience enough rules that if you just invite them to take a leap of faith you’ll go with it and you can enjoy the ride.” Jones went on to say that the one element they added to Ripley’s story of traveling into people’s brains during the last eight minutes of their lives was humor. “I think one of the things we were able to do is lighten the tone, inject some humor into it so the audience is able to make that leap of faith and say, ‘I understand you, I trust these rules you’ve set up, let’s just see how the story goes.’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “Source Code.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Lil Wayne Renews His Love For New York At Long Island Shows

Closing the second night of the I Am Still Music stop at Nassau Coliseum, Weezy gives a shout out to his Rikers COs. By Rahman Dukes Lil Wayne performs in Long Island on Monday Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage UNIONDALE, New York — It’s been roughly two weeks since Lil Wayne returned to the big stage with his I Am Still Music Tour . He’s been tearing up venues across the country in the days that followed, but there was something sentimental about his two nights of sold-out shows at Long Island’s Nassau Coliseum. After all, just a few months ago, a little more than 20 miles away, Wayne was doing hard time at Rikers Island , serving a one-year prison sentence on weapons charges stemming from the 2007 arrest that followed his show at New York’s Beacon Theatre. On Monday night, Wayne exchanged the 8-foot cell he was housed in at the Eric M. Taylor Center for a hockey arena and thanked fans for their support during his down time. “A few months ago, I was stuck in this island,” Wayne told to the audience. “This place called Rikers Island. It was people like Drake and people like y’all who made me feel like I was in a paradise of love. Shout out to the COs I’m cool with, but tell the warden to kiss my ass.” But in reality, Weezy showed no signs of bitterness towards the state he unwillingly called home for the majority of 2010. The larger-than-life MC appeared on stage sporting a blue and orange New York Knicks cap, his signature polo shirt and black leather pants. Wayne closed out his New York run backed by a live band, unearthing a catalog of smash hits including “Mrs. Officer,” “Go DJ” and “Got Money” as well as mixtape cuts such as “I’m Single” and “Bill Gates.” With appearances by Lil Twist, Mack Maine, Shanell and Nicki Minaj, Weezy continued to make the point that his Young Money movement was reminiscent of previous rap powerhouse cliques who made their marks in the hip-hop game. “Remember how Diddy had his artists? And Jay had Roc-a-fella, and Baby had all his artists?” Wayne asked. “Well, I have all my artists.” Halfway through his set, Wayne introduced Minaj, and the Queens MC ripped through her own records for her hometown crowd. Nicki ignited the audience with hits “Roman’s Revenge” to “Did It on ‘Em” to the celebratory “Right Through Me” anthem, for which she donned a wedding dress. And as she assisted Wayne on “Roger That” he appeared to be stunned by Nicki’s tight, ripped-up jeans. “Make some noise for the best rapper aliiive,” Nicki yelled at the crowd, referring to Wayne as she exited the stage. “Make some noise for them pants!” Wayne shot back. Preceeding Wayne’s set, Rick Ross also ignited the coliseum with his array of hits and a surprise guest appearance by close friend DJ Khaled, who joined him for “We Takin’ Over.” Khaled also showed his New York support wearing a New York Yankees clubhouse jacket. The show had emotional moments in between songs too. Wayne took time to send prayers for earthquake victims in Japan and acknowledged members of the military in the audience who came out to support the MC in their uniforms. “We got a couple soldiers in here; make some noise for these men,” Wayne said, removing his tinted shades as the house lights spotlighted the warriors. On the night of his arrest years ago, Weezy vowed to never return to the Big Apple. But judging by the diamond-studded grin he flashed throughout the night as the crowd chanted “Weezy’s Home,” it’s a safe assumption that the MC was happy to be back in New York. “New York always showed us love,” said Birdman, sitting in his tour bus following the show. “It was just unfortunate he had to come out here and do time. But the people always showed us mad love. New York is probably one of our biggest markets. They always supported us, and we always showed them love.” Related Photos Lil Wayne Brings ‘I Am Still Music’ Tour To New York Related Artists Lil Wayne
