Lil Wayne Proves It’s Still Wayne’s World As #5 Hottest MC

The Martian’s double-platinum album and star-studded YMCMB roster land him firmly on MTV News’ Hottest MCs in the Game VII list. By MTV News staff Lil Wayne Photo: Getty Images On Tha Carter IV, Lil Wayne raps about his “Nightmares of the Bottom.” While the sentiment revealed a humbler side of Tunechi, the Martian reached astronomical heights in 2011 and lands in the top half of MTV News’ Hottest MCs in the Game VII list. But Weezy’s winning year was even more impressive when you consider that the Cash Money soldier spent most of 2010 behind bars . With little time to prepare, Wayne hit 2011 hard beginning with the smash rap single (and Carter IV lead track) “6 Foot 7 Foot.” As with many albums, C4 saw a ton of delays, but Weezy made up for things with his Sorry 4 the Wait mixtape . When the fourth installment of the Carter series finally arrived on August 28 (after a show-closing VMA performance), Wayne moved 964,000 copies in a single week, just barely missing the platinum-in-a-week mark he hit with 2008’s Carter III. Want to join the debate? Just hit us on Twitter using the hashtag #HottestMC! “Wayne had a strong year; almost a million in a week doesn’t lie,” said Yomi Desalu, MTV’s senior director of music and talent. “He’s definitely remained relevant for the whole year and once he came out, he hit the ground running.” HOT STREAK Album: Tha Carter IV Selected Mixtapes: Sorry 4 the Wait Singles: “How to Love,” “She Will” (featuring Drake), “Mirror” (featuring Bruno Mars) Street Bangers: “6 Foot 7 Foot” (featuring Cory Gunz), “John” (featuring Rick Ross) Key Guest Appearances: Kelly Rowland’s “Motivation,” B.o.B’s “Strange Clouds,” Ace Hood’s “Hustle Hard” (remix), Drake’s “The Motto” Meteoric Metrics: Wayne’s #1 Carter IV moved 964,000 copies in its first week and has been certified double-platinum by the RIAA Business Ventures: Young Money CEO continued to clock dollars off record sales from Drake and Nicki Minaj; launched Trukfit clothing line Tours: I Am Still Music run took Wayne across three continents and raked in $47 million Monumental Moment: Hours after closing out the MTV VMAs in August, Tunechi released Tha Carter IV, earning a platinum plaque in just 14 days. Forecast: Wayne should continue to dominate in 2012. YM president Mack Maine predicted that Weezy will drop sequels to Rebirth and I Am Not a Human Being, and Tha Carter V is always a possibility. “I think that’s an understatement, that he remained relevant. I think that he maintained his dominance,” said Rob Markman, MTV News’ senior hip-hop writer. When we talk about Wayne, nobody [has] sold a million in a week — since Lil Wayne. Quite frankly, I think #4 is too low.” It was another banner year for Wayne. His first-week sales were higher than that of any other rap artist and his I Am Still Music Tour, Video Music Award performance and “MTV Unplugged” special proved that the YMCMB CEO was as impactful as ever. Granted, Weezy’s 2011 style and swag were an acquired taste (see his VMA animal-print jeggings and the day-Glo-green moon boots he sported in Drake’s “Motto” video), but his lyrical prowess on songs like “It’s Good” could not be denied. Some members of the Hip-Hop Brain Trust insisted that the Wayne train had lost a bit of steam though. “You talk about Sorry 4 the Wait, people were disappointed that it wasn’t No Ceilings. People were disappointed that Tha Carter IV was not Tha Carter III, ” said MTV Jams’ Tuma Basa. A few even contended that Weezy was riding off of the success of his Young Money artists Nicki Minaj and Drake. Did the students surpass the teacher? One roundtable panelist argued that Nicki the Ninja, who debuted on the “Hottest MCs” list at #6 in 2010 , had bested her sensei. “I definitely think over the past year Nicki’s singles have actually resonated with her fans. I don’t think any of Wayne’s songs [have] — if you want to say ‘John’ that’s a Rick Ross record; if you want to say ‘She Will,’ it was a Drake record,” said Steven Roberts, a producer/writer at MTV News. The Wayne/Nicki argument became so strong in fact that moderator and show host Sway Calloway decided to take a vote. In a most surprising turn, six of the nine experts elected to move Nicki Minaj up to the #4 spot and Lil Wayne down to #5. Still, no matter how you slice the pie, it’s all Young Moola, baby! U2, Taylor Swift Top List Of 2011’s Highest-Grossing Tours

U2’s 360 Tour is the year’s most profitable in the U.S. and worldwide. By James Montgomery U2’s Bono Photo: Harry Herd/ Getty Images U2 didn’t even release an album in 2011, but that didn’t stop them raking in plenty of cash. The iconic Irish quartet topped Pollstar’s list of the year’s most profitable tours, as their massive 360 Tour moved an impressive 2.4 million tickets worldwide, grossing more than $230 million globally. Their North American dates — which were postponed (and subsequently rescheduled) last year as Bono recovered from back surgery — made $156 million, good enough to give them the highest-grossing tour on this continent, too. Taylor Swift had 2011’s second most-profitable North American tour, as her expansive Speak Now jaunt racked up $97.7 million at the box office. Swift’s country contemporary, Kenny Chesney, came in at #3, bringing in nearly $85 million in ticket sales, followed by Lady Gaga, who, despite wrapping up the North American leg of her Monster Ball tour in April, still managed to bring in $63.7 million at the box office. Bon Jovi rounds out Pollstar’s top five, grossing more than $57 million. Kanye West and Jay-Z’s Throne tour ($48 million), Lil Wayne’s “I Am Still Music” trek ($44 million), Britney Spears ($38 million) and Katy Perry ($28 million) also made the Top 25 in North America. British boy band Take That’s reunion tour came in second to U2’s 360 trek based on worldwide receipts, making $224 million. Bon Jovi grossed nearly $150 million worldwide, good enough for third, with tours by Swift ($104 million worldwide) and Roger Waters ($103 million) rounding out the top five. Also making Pollstar’s worldwide list were Rihanna, the Foo Fighters, Justin Bieber, Usher and the Kings of Leon. Did you attend any of the highest-grossing tours in 2011? Stalley Says Lincoln Way Nights Re-Release ‘A Whole Different Project’

Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group signee has MTV’s Jam of the Week. By Steven Roberts Stalley Photo: MTV News Stalley ‘s inclusion in Rick Ross’ “invincible” Maybach Music Group probably came as a surprise to plenty of people — because it definitely came as a surprise to the Ohio MC himself. Arguably lesser-known than Wale, Meek Mill and Pill were before they joined the team, Stalley nevertheless caught the Bawse’s attention. When MTV News caught up with the rapper earlier this week, he said New Orleans spitter Curren$y actually linked them up. “Curren$y had called me, and he told me that Ross was looking for me and that he wanted to reach out,” Stalley recalled. “Curren$y asked if it was OK if he gave Ross my number, and I was like, ‘Yeah, of course.’ ” Stalley said Ross flew him down to Dallas during the first leg of Lil Wayne’s I Am Still Music Tour and asked if he wanted to be a part of the team. Stalley said he jumped at the opportunity because he felt the team was very family-oriented and that he would retain total control of what he was already doing. It’s a few months later, and Stalley has MTV’s Jam of the Week for the remix of his “Lincoln Way Nights (Shop)” featuring Ross. The video, which was directed by Spiff TV, features the two rappers riding around, eating lavishly. Stalley is set to re-release his mixtape, Lincoln Way Nights (Intelligent Trunk Music) on November 1, completely re-mastered by Young Guru and Tony Dorsey. “It sounds like a whole different project,” he said.” I’m just very excited, and I’m very happy to re-release it for those who might have not got to hear it.” Related Artists Stalley

Lil Wayne Tour Evolves With ‘So Much’ New Music

‘He’s releasing song after song after song,’ musical director Gil Smith tells MTV News of evolving I Am Still Music Tour. By Rob Markman Lil Wayne Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Lil Wayne is constantly evolving. From a 12-year-old kiddie MC, to the self-proclaimed “best rapper alive” to rock star and now R&B singer, Weezy has kept things interesting during the course of his 14-year career. His I Am Still Music Tour has been just as prolific, thanks to the mass amount of music he’s been releasing. And with his ninth solo album, Tha Carter IV, dropping at midnight after Sunday’s VMAs — where Wayne will also perform — concertgoers can expect some changes to the set list. “I think just in terms of the tour, we’ve been adding songs here and there,” Wayne’s musical director Gil Smith told MTV News. “You gotta understand with Wayne, there is so much music. I mean, we can talk about Tha Carter IV, and then we can sit down and have a different conversation about Sorry 4 the Wait, which was a whole different thing that he put out. So it’s so much music. Even when we’re on the road, he’s releasing song after song after song, so we got to kind of find ways to incorporate that as we go along.” When he and his Young Money compadres opened the tour in May in Providence Rhode Island, Wayne hadn’t yet released his fan-dedicated tape Sorry 4 the Wait, and Tha Carter IV was in release-date limbo. During the course of the concert run, which was extended through September, Wayne released the mixtape and a number of C4 singles. Smith said that by the time the tour wraps, the first show will be much different from the last. It’s not just the music, either. “It’s changed quite a bit. Now he’s skating around the stage, he has a skateboard trainer who’s out there with him,” Smith said. “He’s really into skateboarding, and he’s also into singing for the ladies. There’s a section of the tour that’s dedicated to that, and that’s how we kind of incorporated ‘How to Love,’ along with some other favorites.” Wayne will grace the stage this Sunday at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, and while Smith wouldn’t reveal what the YMCMB star has planned , he said fans can expect a Weezy they’ve never seen. “We’ve been brainstorming and taking from things that we put together on the road, so I think they can just expect a new-and-improved Wayne, a different Wayne,” he said. “You know, he always comes different: One day he’s a rock star, one day he’s a skater; he’s singing R&B. I think we can expect a little bit of everything in this performance.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8.
