So Why is Black Swan a Huge Hit, Anyway? (Hint: Lesbians)

As alluded to in this morning’s edition of The Broadsheet, everyone in Hollywood seems stunned by the success story that is Black Swan . Even filmmaker Darren Aronofsky says he can’t make heads or tails of the phenomenon, which has earned recognition everywhere from manic-comic Saturday Night Live segments to the supermarket-tabloid media obsessed with star Natalie Portman (now pregnant by and engaged to marry on-screen dance partner Benjamin Millipied). “I get the teenage-girl part of the audience because it’s a coming-of-age story about a girl becoming a woman. But older people are seeing it too,” he told the LA Times . “I don’t know if even I understand it.” Oh, Darren — don’t start being modest now : Let’s hear it for lesbians!

REVIEW: Director Peter Weir Returns Via Bold, Bumpy Way Back

The kind of filmmaking excitement that director Peter Weir brings to movies is bone deep. It doesn’t emerge in the flashy flourishes that come off as compulsively exhibitionistic — the “Dude, Where’s My Camera Car?” school. Instead, in the potent and dream-like The Way Back , Weir’s subtle control is evident by the way he uses sound, embracing the allure and menace it simultaneously evokes. And we’re reminded how crushingly obvious many directors are about incorporating the aural aspect of their work; generally when the audience is aware of it, it’s used like a blunt object by horror film directors.

She Killed ‘Em Softly: Angry Concert Goers Storm Out of Lauren Hills Concert

Lauren Hill is back to being a diva. Concertgoers in Atlanta blasted her for showing up late and refusing to sing the classics that made people love her in the first place. The 35-year-old narcissist left Atlanta concertgoers infuriated and unimpressed with her sold-out show at Atlanta’s Center Stage last night. After the show, one fan, a well-connected industry insider, called me to say Hill’s Atlanta show was “very disappointing.” The source said local DJ Cash played old school music and kept the audience so crunk that when Hill finally rushed out onstage just after midnight, the expectations for a great show were high. It was all love when the mother of 5 first hit the stage 3 hours late for her advertised 9 p.m. show. Lauryn promptly confused her fans by announcing that she was tired of “playing the same music night after night.” Hill told the shocked audience that she wanted to play something different. She then instructed her band to speed up the music, which rendered her classic hits unrecognizable. The insider said Hill urged the audience to sing along, saying, “I want crowd participation.” “But nobody could participate because NOBODY knew the music!,” said the fan. “Everybody was looking around like ‘WHAT SONG IS THIS???’” “It was new music completely,” the frustrated fan continued. “The lyrics were the same, but you had to be on ecstasy to follow the music!” To complicate the situation further, the fan said the band was way too loud. “We kept asking her to tell the band to turn the music down,” said the fan. “We couldn’t hear her.” The source said other concertgoers booed the singer and then took their bags and purses and “stomped out” of the theater. “They didn’t walk out — they stomped out!” she emphasized. The insider eventually gave up and walked out as well. Lauryn’s next stop on her tour is St. Louis tomorrow (Jan. 16). If you’re planning on attending her show at The Pageant Theater, just remember: you were warned. Wow. People don’t pay to sing songs, they pay to hear songs sung ON TIME. Who waits 3 hours for anybody to get anywhere? Source

Swizz Beatz Says Jay-Z And Kanye West’s ‘H.A.M.’ Is ‘Super Positive’

‘I think that if more of the industry did moves like this it would be a better place for everybody,’ producer tells MTV News. By Mawuse Ziegbe Swizz Beatz Photo: MTV News When Kanye West and Jay-Z dished out “H.A.M.”, the first official single from their forthcoming joint album Watch the Throne, it was a colossal hip-hop moment. Two of the rap’s reigning mic-rippers tag-teaming on a track heaping with bravado-laden lyricism over producer Lex Luger’s incessant, piercing drums is a major way to star to start the hip-hop conversation in 2011. Swizz Beatz, who’s crafted multiple records with both MCs, told MTV News on Wednesday (January 12) that Yeezy and Hov’s collaborative effort could be taken as a blueprint for how to push the hip-hop game further. “I think that those being both of my friends, and knowing that people can team up on such a high caliber level — as musicians, as rappers, as friends, as peers — I think it’s super-positive, and I think that if more of the industry did moves like this it would be a better place for everybody,” Swizz said. The Monster Mondays songsmith has been in the lab with the hip-hop titans as they craft Throne, and added that the tracks that in the works definitely game-changing potential. “I’m involved a little bit on the album, and just hearing the different songs it’s like ‘Wow, they’re really taking it to another level.’ I’m happy to be a part of it, those are my brothers and [they’re] going to continue pushing the envelope,” he said. Swizz also insisted Jay and ‘Ye are “definitely coming with the monsters,” and that “H.A.M.” will be followed up by tracks that are “just gonna keep getting better.” However, the prolific producer mused that the two MCs don’t have an specific agenda for Throne’s chart performance — since they’ve both got boatloads of accolades, fame and radio hits to their names — but are rather hitting the studio to create the tracks they feel like making. “I think they’re just doing them. I don’t think artists nowadays are paying attention to any like, particular formats. Because the industry is not what it used to be — you can’t predict a Top 40 record or a #1 Urban record. You just gotta just do what you feel is hot. It’s just like you feel like you don’t want to rap no more [or] you wanna keep going past the hook, just keep going past the hook. That makes it real hip-hop.” he said. “People don’t understand that hip-hop got started from being rebellious to any rules. Hip-hop has no rules, and the only reason hip-hop started getting rules [was] because of radio airplay, sales, different spins and trying to reach out to another audience. But Jay and Kanye got the audience already so they can do what they want to do, and I think that’s what they doing, which is a great move.” Like his homies, Swizz is also making some high-profile joint moves, collaborating with Reebok and luxury car maker Aston Martin. The producer/rapper has also been tinkering on his next solo effort, titled Haute Living, which he said will be a creative departure from his previous work. “I think people are not gonna expect what they’re gonna hear on my album. I’m very hard on myself with the album because it’s like putting on another hat and it’s opening up the door for a lot of criticism,” he said of heading back to the mic for the follow-up to 2007’s One Man Band Man. Ultimately, he shrugged off any possible Haute hate, and maintained that, like Jay and Kanye, he’s in it to make music and have a good time. “Doing this album I said, ‘Look, I’m not trying to be the best rapper in the world, I’m not trying to do none of that. I’m just trying to have fun and treat it as [an] art project where I’m expressing myself.’ ” While he may be prioritizing creativity over commercial viability, Swizz hasn’t been slacking on securing a diverse lineup of A-list features that includes a rock star, a Rebirth rapper and R&B royalty. “I have amazing collaborations on the album from Lenny Kravitz, Wayne, my sister Mary [J. Blige], Maxwell is on the album,” he said. “I don’t want to give it all away but I’m trying to come with something … that’s just gonna like blow people’s minds away. They gonna be like, ‘Wow.’ ” Do you agree with Swizz’ thoughts about Jay and Kanye’s “H.A.M.” record? Let us know in the comments! Miguel Learns Showmanship From Usher, Mary J. Blige Tours

‘They go out there every night and they give it 100 percent,’ singer says of his tourmates. By Vanessa Denis, with reporting by Steven Roberts Miguel Photo: MTV News “All I Want Is You” singer Miguel began making noise on the road this fall, when he opened up for Mary J. Blige’s Music Saved My Life Tour . From there, he jumped onboard Usher’s OMG Tour , which will end its North American leg on December 31. Both outings have given the 24-year-old up-and-comer a crash course on being a performer. “Coming off the tour with Mary J. Blige and Jazmine Sullivan and El DeBarge, being able to watch them onstage, was such a tremendous learning experience,” Miguel told MTV News. “First of all, the audience is very different demographic-wise from the audience on the OMG Tour, but the one thing that is consistent is that everything changes in every city.” One thing he noticed was how his tourmates don’t let their personal ups and downs affect what they do on the stage. “We all have our own personal circumstances, life, and these people are professionals, and they go out there every night and they give it 100 percent and they connect with their audience,” he observed. “And that’s something that I really, really studied, how they adapted. Adapting to the differences, and the different sound.” After transitioning from Music Saved My Life to OMG, Miguel also had to learn how to connect to the crowd in larger venues. “And now that we’re about halfway through the tour, I think my band and I, we all feel really, really, comfortable being in these venues,” he said. “It’s been a lot of fun, just kind of trying things and augmenting and evolving the show, in order to reach that person way up at the top, as well as the person right down front and center.” As an opening act, Miguel sees a huge value in making a good impression on the audience. “We go out there, and I think we go off stage and the people are impressed,” he said proudly. “If you didn’t know who I am [before the show] … you leave wondering or wanting to know more.” Have you seen Miguel in concert? Mariah Carey Performs With Mother On Holiday TV Special

Superstar sang holiday classics and songs from her new Christmas album Merry Christmas II You during concert. By James Dinh Mariah Carey and her mother, Patricia, sing on stage together during ABC’s “Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You” Photo: ABC It was an evening full of smiles, snow and festive cheer as Mariah Carey treated fans to an early Christmas gift with her own holiday TV special on Monday night. The ABC broadcast, appropriately titled “Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You,” featured the pregnant singer spreading merry joy throughout Los Angeles’s Orpheum Theater with yuletide classics, holiday originals and a first-time onstage performance with her mother, Patricia Carey. Decked out in a Santa-esque minidress, Carey kicked the hour-long broadcast off with her high-energy tune “Oh Santa” — the lead single from her second holiday album, Merry Christmas II You — as a pack of kids happily danced around the singer. “They say it’s unrealistic/ But I believe in you Saint Nick/ So grant this wish for me right quick/ Santa won’t you come and make him mine this Christmas night,” Mariah crooned before the sparkling stage setup. Carey also put her own spin on Christmas classics by mashing them together. “Alright, so we’re going to do a new song … actually a very old song,” she told the roaring crowd. “We created a medley of ‘Little Drummer Boy’ and ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’ for the new album Merry Christmas II You, and we’re going to play that one for you tonight. And here we go. …” During the number, the singer displayed her vocal acrobatics, including her soothing falsetto, with the assistance of a backing choir before kicking off “O Holy Night,” which she described as one of her “favorite Christmas songs of all time.” Soon after, friend and musical collaborator Randy Jackson joined the singer for a hip-hop-flavored rendition of “Here Comes Santa Claus (Housetop Celebration).” The “American Idol” judge appeared excited to take the stage with the singer as he urged the audience to applaud for “the hottest, the dopest, the bestest … Mariah Carey.” Later on, Carey sang another original, “When Christmas Comes,” which she revealed she’d never performed live. The song draws similarities to her inspirational 2002 song “Fly Like a Bird.” Before a clip from the holiday classic “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” the soon-to-be mother traded the show’s earlier spectacles for a piano and accompanying player for a peaceful rendition of “Christmas Time Is Here” and fan favorite “Joy to the World.” The evening wasn’t just full of jolly anthems though, as the focus turned to Make-a-Wish child Mackenzie, who is in need of a new kidney. Footage of the young girl was shown alongside her adoptive mother, Ronna Williams. After exchanging a few words with her, Carey directed the audience to give a round of applause to Mackenzie and dedicated her “Christmas Time Is in the Air Again” to her. Making the celebration even more memorable was a performance by the singer and her mom, opera singer Patricia Carey, who took the stage together to perform a medley of “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “Hallelujah.” “Please give a big hand to my very special guest. My mother, Patricia Carey, is here tonight,” the songbird said, standing next to her mother. “We’re going to do a song from the new album Merry Christmas II You. This is something that’s very close to both of our hearts.” And if fans ever wondered where Mimi got her vocal talent, it became clear last night. In a singing extravaganza, Patricia took control of the performance as Mariah followed behind with repetition lines until she busted out her signature whistle notes. Carey ended the festivities on a high note (literally), singing her signature holiday classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You” as an entourage of holiday characters danced around the powerhouse diva. The gang offered her a batch of gifts, but the singer kept in tune with the song’s lyrics by pushing their presents aside. As the song ended, the stage was transformed into a winter wonderland as a flood of snow fell atop the stage ceiling and onto Carey and company. Did you catch Mariah’s TV special?
