American Idol Top 3 Auditions: Hail to the Intern!

Just how possible is it to like the audition rounds of American Idol ? 35%? Or so? Less? They’re such unending trials of schmaltz, nerves, and cruelty, packing none of the torch-song determination of the competitive weeks. American Idol ‘s supposed to make us say, “I want to live ” and not “I want to cry for the rate of idiocy in the heartland.” Oh, Milwaukee. The tryouts in Wisconsin’s most beer-friendly city were fine, but only these three auditions (including a young lady I will soon call Harmonic-a Lewinsky) made the evening worth our cheeseheaded devotion.

American Idol in New Orleans: Sarah Sellers, Jacee Badeaux Impress

After getting off to a strong start in New Jersey, the new American Idol panel hit the Big Easy last night. As Steven Tyler continued to share random thoughts and jokes (our favorite: seeing a husky Randy Jackson in a photo from a high school sporting event and asking, “Which is the shot put?”), two contestants stood out. We’ve posted their audition videos below. Sarah Sellers : Large-lipped 28-year-old describes herself as a “marketing analyst by day, an aspiring singer and a food and music blogger.” Tyler adored her version of Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love,” sang here: Sarah Sellers Audition Jacee Badeaux : A 15-year old summed up by J. Lo as being “So sweet and SOOOO CUUUUUTE!” Close your eyes, listen to him sing an Otis Redding classic and ask yourself: Couldn’t this be Justin Bieber ? Jacee Badeaux Audition

‘American Idol’ Crooner Brett Loewenstern Scores Fiery New Orleans Audition

Flame-haired 16-year-old victim of bullying impresses judges with soulful rendition of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Brett Loewenstern Photo: FOX Another night of “American Idol, another teen overcomes adversity and shows off impressive vocal chops. As the “Idol” train rolled in to New Orleans for season ten’s second day of auditions, Brett Loewenstern made his mark on the judges with his smooth-as-silk voice and mop of red hair, handily winning over the panel despite his tough past. Sporting a striped T-shirt, skinny pants and those red spirals — which he tames with baby oil — the 16-year-old Boca Raton, Florida native captivated Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson with his easy take on the epic Queen classic “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Lopez said the performance reminded her of the vocal stylings of British group Simply Red, who boast flame-haired crooner Mick Hucknall as the soul outfit’s velvety-voiced frontman. Loewenstern’s family gleefully watched the audition via monitors alongside Ryan Seacrest, with the crooner’s younger brother proudly pointing out his singing sibling. When the audition ended, Loewenstern happily burst out of the room and was enveloped in hugs by his waiting family. Although the audition ended on a triumphant note, the performance capped off years of struggling socially at school. Loewenstern recounted harsh years stemming from elementary school, during which he lacked friends and had to deal with unrelenting bullying. However, the teen singer eventually embraced the unique qualities that once drew taunts, dubbing himself “a green apple in a pile of red apples.” “I had an epiphany at one point,” he said. “I finally became happy in my own shell, and now it’s like, [if] someone doesn’t like me it’s cool. ‘Cause as long as I like me that’s all that matters.’ The ginger-haired teen also had a message for everyone on both sides of the bully battle: “Be yourself, because there’s only one life to live.” What did you think of “American Idol” on Thursday? ‘American Idol’ Champ Kris Allen Rates Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez

‘Steven Tyler was obviously the most interesting one,’ he tells MTV News ‘Idol’ expert Jim Cantiello during our post-show live stream. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Kris Allen during MTV News’ post-“American Idol ” live stream on Wednesday Photo: MTV News For our first-ever post- “American Idol ” live stream, “Judging the Judges: An ‘Idol’ Without Simon,” MTV News’ resident “Idol” expert Jim Cantiello brought in the big guns to discuss and dissect the premiere episode of the 10th season. A major highlight was the appearance, via Skype, of season-eight champ Kris Allen, who said hello with his dog Zorro and offered his thoughts on the new judges. “I thought they were good. I thought Steven Tyler was obviously the most interesting one,” Allen said. “I figured he was going to be a wacky kind of guy, and, I mean, you can’t be mad at him for singing [along] all the time — he’s freakin’ Steven Tyler! I thought it was awesome, I really did.” When asked how Tyler and Lopez might have influenced his audition, had they been the judges during Allen’s winning season, the 25-year-old said he hoped the Aerosmith frontman would have joined in on his audition like he did on Wednesday’s episode. “That would [have been] awesome,” Allen said. “It’s probably a little bit different to sing for someone like Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler, because they have been in the industry for so long and you’ve been watching them do it forever, so it would probably be weird.” On the whole, Allen said the evening’s viewing experience — which he shared with his wife, Katy, and a couple of friends — was a good time. “It was fun,” he said. “It wasn’t mind-blowing or anything. I thought there were some good singers. I thought there was some funny stuff, and I thought Steven Tyler was great,” he said, adding that his dog, Zorro, definitely liked J.Lo the best. 9 More Directors Who Should Shoot Their Next Film on an iPhone

News recently broke that acclaimed Old Boy director Park Chan-Wook shot his new thirty minute horror film on an iPhone. The film, Paranmanjang , had a $130,000 budget and will be released in nine cinemas nationwide. Yep, welcome to 2011! Sure, Chan-Wook is a solid filmmaker and it may be interesting to see how he handles an iPhone movie, but all the same I’d prefer that great filmmakers not get in the habit of shooting movies on cell phones. But since trends seem to operate independent of my opinion, it’s always good to take a look at the silver lining. With that in mind, here are nine major filmmakers who might actually benefit from making their next film on an iPhone.

Director Joseph Kosinski on Tron: Legacy and the Limitations of CGI-Created Actors

It’s been a very long road for Tron: Legacy to finally make it to the big screen. Rumors of a sequel to the 1982 cult favorite have been circulating on the Internet for about as long as there’s been a widely used Internet. The original Tron told the story of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), a computer programmer who found himself materialized inside the very computer system that he designed. Even when a trailer for a sequel did materialize (originally titled TR2N ) at Comic-Con in 2008 — as director Joseph Kosinski explains, that was basically his audition tape — it took two and a half more years before the film was actually put together and released. For Kosinski, today, the wait is finally over.

T.J. Miller on Yogi Bear, Justin Timberlake and That Notorious Viral Video

T.J. Miller — perhaps best known to movie fans as Hud from Cloverfield — just wants to make sure you give his new film Yogi Bear a fair shake before you judge it. Then again, Miller, who in 2008 was named one of the 12 rising stars in comedy by Entertainment Weekly , has a bit at stake for this film considering that he theoretically could have been eaten by a real bear during his audition.
