Golden Globe nominees Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor turned out for a special screening of their epic tearjerker The Impossible and talked to me about how they summoned the emotional wherewithal to play a couple whose family is torn apart by a tsunami. The picture’s director, J.A.Bayona also attended and told me he had no qualms about casting a Scottish and an Australian actor to play the real-life Spanish couple on which the harrowing story is based. Bayona pointed out that the film never clarifies the couple’s nationality. Besides, the actual husband and wife who inspired the story were on the carpet and they were clearly supportive of the film. Nude on DVD this week it’s the complete first season of the divisive HBO drama Girls . Narcissistic New Yorkers may not be your bag, but you have to give some one-handed applause to Lena Dunham who so frequently writes nude roles for herself. The two DJs whose now-infamous Kate Middleton prank call apparently led a nurse to commit suicide may face a criminal probe, according to reports. Mel Greig and Michael Christian of Sydney’s 2Day FM pretended to be Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles inquiring about the health of the pregnant Duchess. The hoax has caused public outcry after Jacintha Saldanha’s suicide . The 46-year-old nurse, who connected the pair to the Duchess’ room, was found dead Friday morning after police were called to an address near the hospital. Circumstances of her death are still being investigated, and are not suspicious at this stage; however, authorities are looking into whether any laws were broken . British police have contacted Australian police about a possible probe into the prank call, specifically the recording and dissemination of the private conversation. Rhys Holleran, CEO of Southern Cross Austereo, the parent company of 2Day FM, has apologized profusely, yet maintains that no laws were broken. The prank had been cleared by the Australian radio station’s lawyers. Holleran said the DJs followed the company’s procedures before broadcasting the call. “Our main concern at this point in time is what has happened is incredibly tragic and we’re deeply saddened and we’re incredibly affected by that,” Holleran said. At the same time, he added, “we’re very confident that we haven’t done anything illegal.” Lord Glenarthur, chairman of King Edward VII’s Hospital, where the pregnant Kate Middleton was/is receiving treatment, condemned the prank Saturday. Glenarthur said the call humiliated “two dedicated and caring nurses,” and the consequences were “tragic beyond words,” The Associated Press reported. Whether it results in criminal charges remains to be seen, but the DJs have already taken themselves off the air and are said to be in “intense” grief counseling.
The first photo of Jacintha Saldanha, the nurse who committed suicide after falling for a prank call involving Kate Middleton, has been released by Scotland Yard. Saldanha passed away hours after being duped by the Kate Middleton prank call , in which two Australian DJ’s pretended to be Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles. Scotland Yard sent out the haunting snap-shot of Saldanha, the nurse on-call at King Edward VII Hospital in London, and whose demise is now under investigation. The 46-year-old’s death is currently listed as “unexplained.” An autopsy will be held next week, according to authorities. Saldanha’s family said in a statement: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our beloved Jacintha. We would ask that the media respect out privacy at this difficult time.” The Australian radio station behind the call also issued a statement Saturday, stating it did nothing wrong and there was no way to have foreseen the tragic outcome. The two DJ’s have suspended themselves from the air. Police in London have contacted their Australian counterparts about speaking with the two radio personalities, Mel Greig and Michael Christian, about the case. While the station claims it did nothing wrong, Greig and Christian’s call, which helped reveal details about the Duchess of Cambridge’s health, was certainly marginal. Nick Kaldas, deputy commissioner for New South Wales Police said: “It hasn’t been indicated to us that an offense has occurred and they have not actually asked for anything yet. “They’ve simply touched base, let us know of their interest and they will get back to us if they actually want something done. Nothing has been requested of us yet.” Kate Middleton Prank Call “As our colleagues in London continue to examine events leading up to the death of Jacintha Saldanha, we will be providing them with whatever assistance is required.” For what it’s worth, the DJs have so far remained tight-lipped after the incident, but are receiving “intensive psychological counseling” to deal with the tragedy. A spokeswoman said that Australian the pair would be speaking with the media, but when would depend on their state of mind, which was described as “fragile.”

Earlier on, the two were dining with Glee star Dianna Agron , who is a close friend of Taylor Swift. Styles and Swift were holding hands as they hopped in a car headed back to Swift’s hotel. A member of the nursing staff at King Edward VII Hospital in London reportedly committed suicide after falling for a phone hoax about the pregnant Kate Middleton . Kate Middleton Prank Call Two Australian DJs apparently phoned the hospital pretending to be Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles, the grandmother and father of Prince William. The DJs were dispatched to the Duchess of Cambridge’s personal nursing staff and were given private details regarding the mother-to-be’s condition and care. The distraught nurse who was found dead was the person who initially put the call through to Kate Middleton’s ward. The family has since been contacted. The radio staff apologized for the prank on Wednesday in light of the tragic news and stated that “it was done with light-hearted intentions.” This is deplorable and it’s safe to say there is nothing light-hearted about this incident. Bangor, Maine TV news anchors Cindy Michaels and Tony Consiglio resigned live on air last night, stunning the audience and their managers alike. The pair matter-of-factly announced at the end of their newscast on WVII that it would be their last. They offered no details – on the air, anyway: Anchors Resign On The Air The duo later told the Bangor Daily News that they were frustrated with management . “I wanted to know I was doing the best job I could and was being honest and ethical as a journalist, and I thought there were times when I wasn’t able to do that,” said Consiglio. “There was a constant disrespecting and belittling of staff and we both felt there was a lack of knowledge from ownership and upper management,” Michaels added. “I was not allowed to structure and direct professionally. I couldn’t do everything I wanted to as a news director. There was a regular undoing of decisions.” Consiglio, 28, started with WVII as a sports reporter in April 2006. The 46-year-old Michaels was the news director and also spent six years at WVII. General manager Mike Palmer says they were on their way out, anyway. He says sometimes people leave their jobs before they’re asked to leave. “Upper management is not involved in the daily production of the news. Period,” said Palmer, noting the creation of 10 new full-time jobs and other investments in the station.
Rihanna’s odd 777 tour – seven cities in seven days with a plane full of fans and reporters – ends in NYC this evening. For some, not a moment too soon. As horror stories from the tour emerge at breakneck speed, so fast that the Unapologetic singer actually apologized (sorta) for some of what transpired. Rihanna being MIA was the biggest gripe. ”I know you guys got barely any dirt,” she told the press Tuesday. “I had to preserve my health. Normally, I’d be back here popping bottles with y’all … I had to preserve my voice. I was worried about my body more than partying.” “I had to just sleep whenever I could.” “But I had to be good. I still sound like $h!t. It’s impossible to spend time with everybody. I’m sorry I didn’t. But this was excellent and I would definitely do it again.” No stories about Rihanna, ironically, became the big story. ”There has been general discontent with the dearth of interaction with the star,” Spin reported. ”One person was basically responsible for not only keeping us from doing our jobs, but from sleeping, eating, going outside or even using a bathroom.” Eventually, disgruntled plane passengers broke out in chants like ”Save our jobs! Save our jobs!” and “Just one quote!” and, most hilariously, “Wi-Fi!” Other issues: Long waits on buses, tarmacs and in windowless pens, nude on-board streakers (above), bad food, too much alcohol and overall “bedlam.” Also distressing were the living conditions, which seemed closer to cattle keeping than the supposed glamor a round-the-world jet would imply. The streaker, Australian DJ Tim Dormer, at least used the 777 tour to his advantage. Rihanna herself did not, despite the great cost of the publicity stunt. The pop superstar gave fans and reporters attention on day one, mingling and serving champagne, and then promptly disappeared for the remaining six. She did, however, tweet pics of herself in various stages of undress. Phew. Who cares about in-person mingling when you can see Rihanna nude on Twitter.
