Australia: Queensland lawyer Alex Stewart smokes pages from the Koran and Bible

A BRISBANE-based lawyer and atheist who videoed himself smoking what appeared to be joints made with pages from the Bible and the Koran expects to lose his job at a Queensland university. In the video, posted on YouTube, Queensland University of Technology (QUT) staffer Alex Stewart compares cigarettes made with pages from the two holy texts. In the clip, titled “Bible or Koran – which burns best?”, the professed atheist says burning religious books is no big deal and people need to get over it. “It's just a f—ing book,” he says. “Who cares? It's your beliefs that matter. Quite frankly, if you are going to get upset about a book, you're taking life way too seriously.” But the QUT, which employs Mr Stewart, is not impressed. Vice-chancellor Professor Peter Coaldrake said that the university does not support the destruction of religious artefacts. “The university is obviously extremely, extremely unhappy and disappointed that this sort of incident should occur,” Professor Coaldrake said in Sydney today. “It may have occurred in the individual's private time or on a weekend – it doesn't matter. “There is always in the community collateral damage to these sorts of things.” Prof. Coaldrake said Mr Stewart met university management today and has since decided to go on leave for an unspecified period. Mr Stewart had not been sacked, Prof. Coaldrake said after the Sydney news conference, but the university would review the matter in accordance with its code of conduct. Mr Stewart, an assistant organiser with a group called Brisbane Atheists, was not at his Brisbane home today but in an earlier message on the group's website he said he expected to be sacked. “I'm screwed. I think I will lose my job over this. Damn it,” he wrote. Yesterday, the president of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, Ikebal Patel, slammed the video. “I think it's highly offensive that he has done this to two of the holiest books in the world,” Mr Patel said. “It does not in any way add any value to trying to promote world peace and the consideration of different views – especially when there are heightened tensions around the anniversary of September 11 and the Eid el Fitr (end of Ramadan) celebrations.” However the president of the Islamic Association of Australia, Sheik Muhammad Wahid, said while Mr Stewart's motives were deeply hurtful to Muslims, his future was for the university to decide. “We condemn it and our feelings have been hurt by this man,” said Sheik Muhammad Wahid. “There is no need for this kind of thing, just to create disunity and disharmony among people living in Australia.” He urged Muslims to turn the other cheek. “I urge my fellow Muslims to abide by the laws of this country and not take any action which breaks the law,” he said. “These types of actions should be condemned by the wider community. He must be asked what was his agenda, what was his purpose? Maybe he was not of sound mind at the time.” Queensland police said they were not investigating the matter. In the video clip, Mr Stewart – who does not identify himself as a QUT staffer – says the Bible and the Koran are “just books”. He refers to the furore sparked in the United States by a controversial pastor, who had threatened to burn copies of the Koran on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks. “With respect to books like the Bible and the Koran, whatever, just get over it,” he says. “That said, I don't think it's completely appropriate unless it's done for a good purpose, which I've done today.” He gave the Bible a seven out of 10 for its burning qualities, and said it was better than the Koran which left him feeling sick. As he smokes part of a page from the Koran, he ponders: “I wonder what Mohammed would have thought about this. Is this profanity, is it blasphemy? Does it really matter?” Mr Stewart has told The Courier-Mail the video was a joke and he does not do drugs. The green substance featured in the video was actually grass clippings, he said. He defended the stunt, saying basic freedoms, such as freedom of speech, should not be threatened simply because someone might be offended. Comment was being sought from the Catholic church. added by: eden49

AUSTRALIA…Independents Bob Katter, Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor to give decision on government

THEIR time is up – Australia has waited 17 days and now three men will decide who will form government. Since the Gillard Government went into caretaker mode almost two months ago, thousands of cancer patients have gone without drug treatments, pay rises have been delayed and a solution to the asylum seeker issue is on hold. With national retailers and business leaders claiming consumer confidence was also being affected by the uncertainty, the way is finally clear for Bob Katter, Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor to make a decision. Late yesterday, agreement was reached with Tony Abbott on critical parliamentary reforms already agreed to by Julia Gillard. As Labor sources revealed the “momentum” appeared to be going their way, Coalition insiders said a “realism” had set in that it was unlikely to go theirs. Both major parties yesterday also offered unprecedented regional development packages in a final round of meetings with the independents. Sources close to the negotiations said both sides had offered “significant” regional development assistance, including prime ministerial oversight of regional and rural policy as well as funding for regional infrastructure. Ms Gillard needs only one of the three independent's support to take Labor to 75 out of the 150 seats in Parliament, one short of being able to form government, but denying Mr Abbott government as well. To avoid a deadlock and a return to the polls at least two would have to back Labor, or all three would need to go with the Coalition. Mr Oakeshott yesterday alluded to the possibility that they were split in who to support: “It does look like we may have to make some choices about whether we stick together or not.” But the long wait for government is starting to take its toll on the lives of Australians. Patients with bowel cancer and those at risk of acute myeloid leukemia are waiting for a government to be formed so it can rubber stamp an expert government committee's recommendation it subsidise two new high-cost drugs – the $20,000-a-year Erbitux and $40,000-a-year Vidaza. Dr Anna Williamson from the Leukemia Foundation said some patients were talking about mortgaging their houses to pay for the drugs as they feared the ongoing delay in approving subsidies could endanger their lives. A national equal pay case for 200,000 social workers has also been affected. A new pipeline to improve water supply water to Canberra, which is still facing water restrictions, is on hold waiting approval from Environment Minister Peter Garrett. Negotiations over a new offshore refugee processing centre in either East Timor or Nauru can't take place during the caretaker period, while more boatloads of asylum seekers arrive. Retail figures show Australians are delaying purchases on big-ticket items such as whitegoods and furniture, a delay which retail groups believe is so consumers can ascertain which policy direction a new government will take. “We want a decision as soon as possible, but certainly we want to ensure that whatever decision is made is made in the interests of the country,” Australian Retailers Association director Russell Zimmerman said. added by: eden49

Islamist leader Burhan Hanif tells Aussie Muslims to ‘shun democracy’

LEADERS of the global Islamist group Hizb ut-Tahrir have called on Australian Muslims to spurn secular democracy and Western notions of moderate Islam and join the struggle for a transnational Islamic state. British Hizb ut-Tahrir leader Burhan Hanif told participants at a conference in western Sydney yesterday that democracy is “haram” (forbidden) for Muslims, whose political engagement should be be based purely on Islamic law. “We must adhere to Islam and Islam alone,” Mr Hanif told about 500 participants attending the convention in Lidcombe. “We should not be conned or succumb to the disingenuous and flawed narrative that the only way to engage politically is through the secular democratic process. It is prohibited and haram.” He said democracy was incompatible with Islam because the Koran insisted Allah was the sole lawmaker, and Muslim political involvement could not be based on “secular and erroneous concepts such as democracy and freedom”. His view was echoed by an Australian HT official, Wassim Dourehi, who told the conference Muslims should not support “any kafir (non-believer) political party”, because humans have no right to make laws. Mr Dourehi also urged Muslims to spurn the concept of moderate Islam promoted by governments in the West, including in “this godforsaken country” of Australia. “We need to reject this new secular version of Islam,” he said. “It is a perverted concoction of Western governments. “It is a perversion that seeks to wipe away the political aspects of Islam and localise our concerns. We must reject it and challenge the proponents of this aberration of Islam.” The conference, which followed the theme The struggle for Islam in the West' was the first major event held by the Australian branch of HT since a seminar in 2007 which coincided with calls for the group to be banned. HT is outlawed in much of the Middle East but operates legally in more than 40 countries, campaigning for the establishment of a caliphate or Islamic state. HT's platform rejects the use of violence in its quest for an Islamic state, but supports the military destruction of Israel. But the group's presence sparked angry protests outside as members of the Australian Protectionist Party (APP) yelled anti-Islam chants. The APP met in a small park to express their need to “protect” the Australian way of life. Conflict between the APP and HT amounted to an exchange of words, anti-Islam chants and the occasional drive-by of young Muslim men yelling obscenities from their car at the APP protesters. One passer-by, a young Muslim man, yelled at the APP group: “You people have absolutely no idea”, sparking a fiery exchange of accusations and finger-pointing. Nick Folkes, the Sydney organiser for the APP, believes that the HT should be banned in Australia and thinks that practising sharia law should be illegal in Australia. “Sharia law is an archaic legal system that treats woman as second-class citizens,” he said. “We're not asking them to change their skin colour or religion. But if they come here, they must reject sharia law.” added by: eden49

Miley Cyrus And Liam Hemsworth Split

Disney star and Australian actor have parted ways, Hemsworth’s rep confirms. By Mawuse Ziegbe Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus Photo: Jamie McCarthy/ Getty Images Miley Cyrus is ending the summer as a single lady. The teen queen has split from her boyfriend Liam Hemsworth after more than a year of dating. Hemsworth’s PR representative confirmed the “Can’t Be Tamed” singer and her beefy Australian beau have officially called it quits. “It’s true,” the actor’s rep told RadarOnline.com . The news comes after reports that the couple were getting serious. According to Radar, Cyrus recently purchased a $3.4 million house, not far from her parents’ California home, where Hemsworth was a frequent guest. Hemsworth and Cyrus struck up a romance after meeting on the film set of “The Last Song” in 2009. The pop star said earlier this year that although she wasn’t on the lookout for a boyfriend, Hemsworth won her over with his gentlemanly charm. “I kind of just wanted to focus on my work. I tend to hide behind my work sometimes,” Cyrus said on “Ellen” in March. “But I met him, and he opened the door for me, and I was like, I have been in L.A. for three years and I don’t think any guy has actually opened the door for me. It wasn’t that he wanted the job. That’s just who he is. I was like, ‘Wow, that is super-impressive.’ I actually turned to the director and said, ‘He’s got the job.’ He’s hot and he opened the door. Excellent.” Cyrus, who dropped her latest album, Can’t Be Tamed, in June, said that much of the LP was inspired by her romance with Hemsworth. “There are a lot of songs that are about Liam,” Cyrus told MTV News when Tamed was released. “I tell him every one’s about him,” she quipped. Bike-Happy, Ped-Friendly Cities Less Obese

Photo credit Kiwi Flickr . Cars make you fat . That’s more or less the message noted researcher John Pucher has tirelessly delivered, making the case for cycling and walking – “active transportation” – as a way for cities to deal with creeping obesity rates and climbing health costs. Now, in a new analysis of U.S., European, and Australian cities, Pucher and his colleagues press the point home even a little further by showing that cities with the highest percentage of trips by foot and by bike have the lowest le… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Videotapes from Secret CIA Prison Uncovered

The Associated Press has revealed the CIA has tapes of 9/11 plotter Ramzi Binalshibh being interrogated in a secret overseas prison in Morocco. The two videotapes and one audiotape are believed to be the only remaining recordings made within the secret prison system. In 2005, the CIA destroyed ninety-two videos of other prisoners being interrogated and tortured. At the time, the agency believed they had wiped away all of the agency’s interrogation footage, but the tapes of Binalshibh were later discovered in a box under a desk in the CIA’s Counterterrorism Center. A Justice Department prosecutor who is already investigating whether destroying the other torture tapes was illegal is now also probing why the Binalshibh tapes were never disclosed. Twice, the government told a federal judge they did not exist. http://www.democracynow.org/2010/8/17/headlines#9 added by: treewolf39
