REVIEW: A Few Nifty Visuals Can’t Rescue Exhausting Last Airbender

The Last Airbender is, as M. Night Shyamalan movies go, pretty straightforward. It’s also, refreshingly, not as completely idiotic as most of his movies are. No aliens in stretchy unitards who can be vanquished by — surprise! — plain old tap water; no meek, modest 19th-century communities who are — surprise! — really just weirdo cults being kept away from 21st-century life. The Last Airbender, based on a popular Nickelodeon cartoon series, is a fantasy-adventure aimed primarily at kids, set in a world where four tribal nations — Air, Water, Earth and Fire — just can’t get along, because a revered being known as the Avatar has skipped out on them some 100 years ago. Taking advantage of this international instability, the people of the Fire Nation have decided to bully the other guys into submission and thus take over the world. Oh where, oh where, could the Avatar be?

Green Day Say ‘Rock Band’ Makes Them ‘Look Like Superheroes’

The band has some wacky ideas for what else game’s developers can do with their avatars. By James Montgomery “Green Day: Rock Band” One of — OK, probably the — biggest perk in getting your own video game is actually being in the game itself. At least that’s what the guys in Green Day told us when we asked them about the just-released “Green Day: Rock Band.” It seems that, much like James Cameron, the band was avatar crazy. “We look like superheroes!” frontman Billie Joe Armstong laughed. “You know, it’d be interesting if they made the ‘Rock Band’ version of us getting out of bed in the morning, you know, like, scratching yourself and then making coffee.” “They were pretty gracious. They didn’t give me nearly as many pimples as I had when I was younger,” bassist Mike Dirnt added of the game’s developers. “They managed to somehow make me look a little better than I did when I was younger [and] now too.” And while “Rock Band” may make Armstong, Dirnt and drummer Tre Cool look even better than they normally do (no offense intended) and goes to great length to capture their likenesses at various stages in their career — from scowling, scatological-minded kids to well-worn, worldly vets — the guys in Green Day wonder why the developers didn’t take the avatar technology one step further. The way they see it, the possibilities are endless. “They’ve got to come up with like, a beer bottle, for [when] you’ll play the guitar, and then you reach for a drink and then, you can get points right there … it’s like, the whole graphic will show up, you know?” Armstrong smiled. “A lit cigarette at the top of the guitar, [smoke it] put it back. [There’s] no end to the possibilities.” And if the avatar situation can be that advanced, why stop there? “There could be interviews in the game too. Like, a concept where you have a journalist that comes up with the microphone and [the player] will have a microphone and have to match the interview,” Armstrong said. “You know, get it right, you get points off that. It’s a great idea — you guys, are you writing this down?” “They can call it ‘Embedded Journalist 2!’ ” Dirnt laughed. MTV News is celebrating the release of “Green Day: Rock Band” with a week of special coverage. For more on the game, check out our blog. 7 James Cameron Characters Who Could Fix the BP Oil Spill Overnight

Everybody’s talking about this week’s meeting between James Cameron and a frazzled coterie of scientists and government officials, the latest in a series of discussions to do something, anything to end BP’ s Deepwater Horizon oil spill that’s ravaged the Gulf of Mexico for more than a month. While some cultural observers taking Cameron’s significant underwater-exploration experience more seriously than others, I think the filmmaker has a much more valuable asset worth considering: The toughest, craziest and most all-around resilient character base of any mainstream director working today. Any mind capable of developing such bad-asses is surely one worth turning loose in the gulf. But who among that wide canon might be the best man (or woman) for the treacherous job? Movieline has some suggestions.

Avatar Breaks More Records

Get James Cameron another house! Fresh on DVD and Blu-ray, Avatar annihilated the records for most single-day Blu-ray copies sold — besting previous champ, The Dark Knight , 1,500,000 to 600,000 — and single-day home video sales total. It also sparked a run on Blu-ray player sales, as retailers said that many customers purchased Avatar and a player simultaneously. No truth the rumor that the Blu-ray disc also turned water into wine, but 20th Century Fox does have to save something for the special edition. Be patient! [ LAT /Hero Complex ]

If He Keeps Making Them, Sam Will Keep Starring In Them

Avatar actor Sam Worthington says he is ready for as many sequels as director James Cameron decides on. Worthington, 33, played the lead role of Jake Sully in the movie, which was released last year, and says he is definitely up for a sequel. He told Hollyscoop: “When the boss decides that he is up for the challenge, when he writes it and tells me to jump, I’ll jump.” Worthington added that he hopes his character, who turned into a member of the Na’vi at the end of the first film, changes in the movie sequel.
