Watch The King’s Speech Edited Down to Just the Stuttering

And now, from the brilliant (and perhaps insomniac) mind that brought you that supercut of Kickboxer featuring nothing but the kicking , wind down your week with The King’s Speech — featuring nothing but the stuttering. Or as they call it in Oscar-history circles, “156 seconds of infirmity that earned Colin Firth an Academy Award for Best Actor.” You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll squirm, etc. Happy Friday! How Samuel L. Jackson Did His Grindhouse Homework for Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained

When Quentin Tarantino ‘s Django Unchained hits theaters in December it’ll bring audiences face to face with a flurry of new grindhouse/genre references and influences, as any Tarantino flick is wont to do. Among those citations is the Italian exploitation pic Goodbye Uncle Tom (AKA Addio Zio Tom / Farewell Uncle Tom ), the notorious 1971 pseudo-doc about a film crew documenting the horrors of slavery in the American south, which Django Unchained cast member Samuel L. Jackson discussed recently during an interview for his superhero flick The Avengers (a movie that does not, by the way, pay homage to questionably exploitative slavery explorations.) In a video interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jackson was asked about the film’s influences. “Quentin pays homage to a lot of different genres, and he would like to say this is a spaghetti Western — and I guess in ways it is,” said Jackson of Django Unchained , in which he plays a character described as a “house slave.” [ GALLERY: The cast of Django Unchained assembles in Mexico ] Jackson says he watched Goodbye Uncle Tom and other similar exploitation pics, including 1975’s Mandingo , which addressed slavery-centric themes. “It’s his take on those films, but it’s not like it’s not part of the fabric of this country, and it happened. We’ll deal with it as honestly and as Tarantino-esque as we can.” One of the great effects of Tarantino’s films is how they introduce mainstream audiences (at least, his segment of the mainstream audience) to the world of genre/exploitation/grindhouse cinema. When it comes to the topic of race in film, movies don’t get much more cringe-inducing than Goodbye Uncle Tom . (Fun fact: Riz Ortolani’s love theme from the pic was used in Nicolas Winding Refn ‘s Drive last year, which I’ve written about here before and will continue to do because I love taking every chance I get to bring up Goodbye Uncle Tom .) Watch a trailer for Goodbye Uncle Tom (warning: Extreme stuff here): Anyway, my anticipation couldn’t be higher for Django Unchained . Kudos to THR for bringing up something like Goodbye Uncle Tom at the Avengers junket , of all places. The official synopsis for Django Unchained : Set in the South two years before the Civil War, DJANGO UNCHAINED stars Academy Award®-winner Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Academy Award®-winner Christoph Waltz).  Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty.  The unorthodox Schultz acquires Django with a promise to free him upon the capture of the Brittles – dead or alive. Success leads Schultz to free Django, though the two men choose not to go their separate ways.  Instead, Schultz seeks out the South’s most wanted criminals with Django by his side.  Honing vital hunting skills, Django remains focused on one goal: finding and rescuing Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), the wife he lost to the slave trade long ago. Django and Schultz’s search ultimately leads them to Calvin Candie (Academy Award®-nominee Leonardo DiCaprio), the proprietor of “Candyland,” an infamous plantation where slaves are groomed by trainer Ace Woody (Kurt Russell) to battle each other for sport.  Exploring the compound under false pretenses, Django and Schultz arouse the suspicion of Stephen (Academy Award®-nominee Samuel L. Jackson), Candie’s trusted house slave.  Their moves are marked, and a treacherous organization closes in on them.  If Django and Schultz are to escape with Broomhilda, they must choose between independence and solidarity, between sacrifice and survival… [via THR ]

In somewhat cheerier news… The other day I was sitting at my desk (like I do all day, every day) and took a swig of water from a bottle… and got a surprise . It’s hard for me to express just how vivid these colors were. Here’s a picture I took: Even this doesn’t really show it as vivacious and deeply hued as it appeared. And after all this happened that day I decided to leave the award up on my the… Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : DiscoverMagazine Discovery Date : 09/04/2012 17:35 Number of articles : 2

Spencer Tracy Was Kind of a Dick

“When Tracy won Best Actor for his turn in Captains Courageous in 1938, he was unable to attend the ceremony. MGM said he was recovering from a hernia, which was the 1940s way of saying ‘hospitalized for exhaustion,’ if you’re picking up what I’m putting down. The studio arranged for Tracy’s wife to accept the award in his stead, as a gesture towards the supposed strength of their marriage. With all the audience fully aware of how Tracy had neglected and mistreated her, Mrs. Tracy walked the stage. But the Academy had a sense of humor: the award was inscribed not to Spencer, but to Dick Tracy. ROUGH. MGM would periodically force Tracy to ‘dry out’ after massive benders — not out of kindness, but so that they could force him to do his next film. During this period, he was living at the Beverly Wilshire and constantly on the prowl — one MGM exec purportedly claimed that ‘No one gets more sex than Spencer Tracy…..except Joan Crawford.'” [ The Hairpin ]

Adele, Rihanna Take Home Brit Awards

Grammy-winner Adele adds two trophies to her collection, while Foo Fighters, Bruno Mars and Coldplay also nabbed awards on Tuesday. By Jocelyn Vena Adele wins at the Brit Awards 2012 Photo: Dave M. Benett/ Getty Images On Tuesday (February 21), some of the biggest names in the music business headed to London’s O2 Arena for the 2012 Brit Awards , where Adele , Rihanna and Bruno Mars were among the stars who took home prizes. Grammy winner Adele added to her award collection by nabbing two Brits, including British Female Solo Artist and the night’s big prize, Mastercard British Album of the Year, for 21. And on Wednesday, the U.K. singer will celebrate the one-year anniversary of her chart-topping 21. “It’s been an amazing year,” she told the room as she accepted the Female Solo Artist prize. She then joked to presenter Kylie Minogue, “I feel like a drag queen next to you,” before thanking her record label for “for letting me be the kind of artist I want to be.” There were also live performances from Florence and the Machine, Coldplay, Bruno Mars, Rihanna and, of course, Adele, who sang “Rolling in the Deep” just a little over a week since her Grammy performance . Meanwhile, just as One Direction seems poised for a U.S. takeover the U.K. boy band nabbed a British Single award for their track “What Makes You Beautiful,” which was released in the States last week. Rihanna and Bruno Mars won International Female Solo Artist and International Male Solo Artist, respectively. “[Thanks to] all my fans who continue to support me no matter what,” said Rihanna, who made headlines on Tuesday (February 21) by adding Chris Brown to her “Birthday Cake” remix . Coldplay took home the British Group prize for the third time. On the other end of the spectrum, Grammy winners the Foo Fighters beat out folks like Jay-Z and Kanye West (a.k.a. the Throne), Lady Antebellum and Maroon 5 to win International Group. Lana Del Rey won the International Breakthrough Act award, just weeks after she dropped her debut, Born to Die. Other awards included Outstanding Contribution Award for Blur, a Critics Choice Award for Emeli Sande and British Male Solo Artist for singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran, who also took British Breakthrough Act.
