When word hit that Kevin Smith was aiming for the Oscars with a qualifying theatrical run for his divisive film, Red State , critics split over his perceived goals and, more specifically, the financial terms of his week-long engagement at L.A.’ s beloved, family-run New Beverly Cinema . Reached for comment, Smith explained his award season intent and why he’s charging $20 for a screening and Q&A at a theater where you can get a double feature for $7 every night, often with an amazing Q&A for free.

What If We Reinvented Awards Season As a Playoff Tournament?

Has awards season become a tad repetitive for your tastes? Sure, the recent surge by The King’s Speech over The Social Network is exciting, I suppose, but at this point how many awards can we see Natalie Portman and Colin Firth win against basically the same competition before we all collectively throw up our hands and say, “OK, we get it. Can we just move on to the Oscars now? Or at least try something different ?” Here’s an idea: What if every single awards ceremony were important?

Late Night Highlights: Javier Bardem Insults Conan’s Hair, Debuts His Woody Allen Impression

You might not think that the thickly accented Javier Bardem would be able to pull off a convincing Woody Allen Impression but he can — and did — on last night’s Conan . He also mocked Conan’s hair, a daring move for someone who sported a bowl cut for an entire film. Elsewhere, Stephen Colbert suffered from Bieber Fever, Vince Vaughn talked skydiving, and Colin Firth told Jon Stewart how to play a stuttering king.

With awards season dragging on for months , it’s no wonder that people with even a passing interest in “the race” become Harry Caul-like in their conspiracy-searching intensity. National Board of Review Honors The Social Network, Jacki Weaver Among Best of 2010

It looks like at least on random collection of awards voters has been paying attention to Movieline’s Oscar Index . The National Board of Review kicked off awards season in style this afternoon by selecting Animal Kingdom star Jacki Weaver as Best Supporting Actress of the year. Huzzah ! Elsewhere, The Social Network cleaned house with awards for Best Film, Director, Actor (Jesse Eisenberg) and Adapted Screenplay. Click ahead for the full list of winners — and note that 127 Hours , Black Swan and The Kids Are All Right were all snubbed. Did the Board not get those screeners?

Listen, I’m with you on the hype thing: There can never be too little, especially this early in what’s generally accepted as the dawn of awards season, pretty much before anyone’s seen anything and studio money talks. But you know what? Let me put it this way: Everything you’ve heard about Javier Bardem and Natalie Portman’s extraordinary performances in Biutiful and Black Swan is true, and if festivalgoers see anything better this week in Toronto, then all of us are in for one hell of a bounty in the months ahead.
