Justin Vernon and company also took home Best Alternative Album Grammy for self-titled album Sunday night. By Zachary Swickey Bon Iver wins Best New Artist at the 2012 Grammy Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Like Arcade Fire ‘s surprise Album of the Year win at last year’s Grammys , Bon Iver taking home Best New Artist on Sunday night (February 12) over more established artists like Nicki Minaj was bound to raise a few eyebrows. And when you asked “Who are Arcade Fire?” in 2012, we had you covered, and we’ve been following Wisconsin singer Justin Vernon (the man behind Bon Iver) for quite some time — long before he snagged BNA and Best Alternative Album at this year’s ceremony. Quite the pleasant surprise for the under-the-radar folk singer, who recently became the face of a Bushmills whiskey ad to boot. Bon Iver’s second, self-titled disc was released in early 2011 but is still clearly getting the attention it deserves. He may have made a few public derogatory comments about the Grammy Awards ceremony itself, but that didn’t sway the voters or the singer from showing up. To put his “underground” status into perspective: Bon Iver debuted at #2 in June 2011 on sales of just under 104,000, but their total album sales to date (just over 357,000) are nothing compared to a powerhouse-seller like Adele’s 21 . A helpful primer on Justin Vernon/ Bon Iver: The former All-State high school football star and World Religion college major began his career playing in the jazzy party band Mount Vernon, which transitioned into DeYarmond Edison, formed with some old high school pals who all moved to North Carolina in 2005 to spread their musical wings. A year later, things fell apart with his band and his girlfriend, just as he was laid low by a vicious bout of mono, driving Vernon back to Eau Claire for some physical and psychic healing. He holed up in isolation in a deer-hunting log cabin built by his dad in the woods in northwestern Wisconsin and began writing the high and lonesome songs that would become For Emma. After months spent drinking and watching “Northern Exposure” DVDs, he alighted on the name Bon Iver, which is a French phrase used as a greeting in the show that translates to “good winter.” The tunes he recorded were intended as a demo, but once they got some blog love, he was signed to indie Jagjaguwar, and For Emma was released in May 2008. The album became an indie sensation, and its mix of acoustic folk and manipulated, Auto-Tuned vocals not only landed him on the “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” soundtrack, but also on a number of songs from Kanye West’s Grammy-nominated My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Video: Watch Highlights From The 2012 Grammy Awards Even as his star was rising, Vernon kept collaborating with a number of other artists, lending his voice to the indie supergroup Gayngs, playing in the side project Volcano Choir and hooking up with English singer James Blake recently on the song “Fall Creek Boys Choir.” Bon Iver continued to be his main focus, so Vernon built his own cabin to record his self-titled project, again just outside of Eau Claire, turning what used to be an indoor pool into a recording studio where he tracked the songs mostly by himself. (The live version of the band includes a drummer, guitarist and bassist.) The denser, 10-track album featured help from a number of collaborators, including renowned session player and pedal steel maestro Greg Leisz, as well as a number of percussionists and horn and string players. MC’s rap alter ego levitates and speaks in tongues against a fiery backdrop at Sunday’s show. By Tomika L. Anderson Nicki Minaj performs at the 2012 Grammy Awards Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images Nicki Minaj may have walked away Grammy -less on Sunday (February 12), but she still managed to deliver one of the most talked-about performances of the night. In the show’s final act the animated rap star — who lost out to Bon Iver for “Best New Artist” — channeled her infamous alter ego Roman Zolanski onstage, leading the audience through a rap exorcism of sorts. At one point, she even levitated, while speaking in tongues and jumping around against a fiery backdrop. Minaj caused a Twitter frenzy earlier in the night when she hit the red carpet wearing a blood-red, hooded robe accompanied by a man dressed like the Pope, and she continued her spirited church-act onstage. Minaj marched out sporting a brown ball gown and long, bleached-blond locks, and performed a skit before launching into her new single, “Roman Holiday,” from her upcoming sophomore album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. It was a show that Lady Gaga (who was also missed by the Grammy fairy this go-round) would have been proud of. In a pre-taped skit, Minaj was surrounded by stained glass and other religious imagery, eerily putting on lipstick, singing “I Feel Pretty.” She then climbed a wall to have an exchange with the strange Pope-like figure, a man who’s real identity remains unknown. After being strapped to a leather lab table onstage, she rapped backed by a goth-looking church choir that sang a haunting version of “Come All Ye Faithful.” At the crescendo, she was lifted by an invisible rope into the Grammy sky. Shooting flames helped to complete the fiery, head-scratching number. Diplo and A-Trak remember the late icon during our 2012 Grammy Awards red-carpet live stream. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by James Montgomery Whitney Houston Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images There is certainly a gray cloud looming over the 2012 Grammy Awards , which are set to air in just a few hours on Sunday (February 12). One day after music icon Whitney Houston was found dead , the show will pay tribute to the six-time Grammy winner. As A-listers hit the red carpet at Los Angeles’ Staple Center, they have been remembering the big-voiced talent for her undeniable gift. “She had the swagger and she had the voice,” Diplo told MTV News during our pre-show live stream. “I was listening to a bunch of records last night, and I was amazed at how deeply I felt about her records as a child.” The producer noted that her contributions to music of all genres still resonated today, thanks to her ability to bust genres wide open and make them all her own. “She had that persona that pulled of pop music and urban and R&B in a way that no one else could do it,” he added. EDM producer A-Trak said that it wasn’t just her catalog that made her iconic, but also her voice. “Just pure talent, incredible voice and the whole package, the personality the presence,” he said, “once in a generation, spectacular talent.” Jennifer Hudson and Houston’s longtime friend Chaka Khan are expected to lead a tribute to the late icon during the Grammys. The show’s executive producer, Ken Ehrlich, said in a statement, “It’s too fresh in everyone’s memory to do more at this time, but we would be remiss if we didn’t recognize Whitney’s remarkable contribution to music fans in general, and in particular her close ties with the Grammy telecast and her Grammy wins and nominations over the years.” MTV Newsl Sway and James Montgomery will be live from the Grammys red carpet tonight starting at 5 p.m. ET to get reactions from musicls biggest stars on the death of Whitney Houston. Clive Davis discovered Whitney Houston at a NYC nightclub when the singer was 20 years old. It was therefore eerie and appropriate that the artist passed away, possibly from an overdose on prescription drugs , just a few hours prior to the music producer’s annual pre-Grammy Awards party at the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel. The somber event did proceed as scheduled – with attendees including Britney Spears, Miranda Lambert, Brandy, Tom Hanks, P Diddy, Kim Kardashian and Mary J. Blige – and Davis opened the shindig with remarks abut Houston. “So, by now sadly, we have all learned of the unspeakably tragic news of our beloved Whitney’s passing. I don’t have to mask my emotions. Not in front of this room full of so many dear friends,” Davis said. “I do have a very heavy heart and I am personally devastated by the loss of someone who has meant so much to me for so many years. Whitney was so full of life. “She was so looking forward to tonight… She loved music and she loved this night that celebrates music.” A moment of silence followed, with Diana Krall, Tony Bennett and Alicia Keys later performing. On tonight’s Grammys telecast, meanwhile, Jennifer Hudson will perform a tribute to Whitney.
