Long Island Man Arrested For Defending Home With AK-47

Says Many Gang Members Were Coming After His Family. UNIONDALE, N.Y. (CBS 2) — He was arrested for protecting his property and family. But it’s how the Long Island man did it that police say crossed the line. He got a high powered AK-47 and pulled the trigger and he ended up in jail, reports CBS 2’s Pablo Guzman. George Grier said he had to use his rifle on Sunday night to stop what he thought was going to be an invasion of his Uniondale home by a gang he thought might have been the vicious “MS-13.” He said the whole deal happened as he was about to drive his cousin home. “I went around and went into the house, ran upstairs and told my wife to call the police. I get the gun and I go outside and I come into the doorway and now, by this time, they are in the driveway, back here near the house. I tell them, you know, ‘Can you please leave?’ Grier said. Grier said the five men dared him to use the gun; and that their shouts brought another larger group of gang members in front of his house. “He starts threatening my family, my life. ‘Oh you’re dead. I’m gonna kill your family and your babies. You’re dead.’ So when he says that, 20 others guys come rushing around the corner. added by: interditx

Growing problem of abandoned babies in Malaysia

Malaysian authorities are grappling with the mounting problem of abandoned babies. Sixty-five infants have been found so far this year, and many were dead by the time they were discovered. The issue has touched a raw nerve in the Muslim-majority country. The government fears that number will surpass previous totals – an average of 100 babies are found each year. They were left in rubbish bins, on doorsteps and on the streets, prompting the government to consider treating cases as murder or attempted murder. The latest abandoned baby, a newborn infant, was found dumped by a riverside, covered in a towel and a piece of cloth and stuffed into a bag. The gruesome finds have encouraged some observers to point the finger at familiar targets: internet pornography, bad parenting, and an over-exposure to sexually liberal western culture. But the phenomenon has also revived a debate over sex education in schools in a country where young people are taught abstinence, and where having a child out of wedlock is seen as deeply shameful. Social workers say this attitude simply drives many desperate women to abandon their babies. The government is trying to tackle the problem by increasing the penalty for the offense, asking police to treat such cases as murder or attempted murder. But there have been other approaches. One charity recently opened the country's first “baby hatch” – a place where mothers can safely and anonymously leave their unwanted child. The southern state of Malacca believes the way to curb the problem is to allow Muslim girls under the age of 16 to marry; it has also proposed opening a school for pregnant teenagers. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-11050427 added by: ampersand

Pro-Life Students want Rubber Fetus Ban Overturned

Rubber fetuses given out by pro-life students at high schools in Roswell, New Mexico were banned because they were “distracting the educational environment.” The want for the ban to be overturned has created a court case bringing to question where the first amendment lies in the situation. Matt Reynolds of OnPoint details: The suspensions of seven pro-life students at two Roswell, N.M., high schools for distributing rubber fetuses have given birth to a lawsuit that takes the First Amendment protections for student speech into uncharted territory. The students, who belong to a religious youth group called Relentless in Roswell, sued school officials last month, alleging their suspensions were unconstitutional. They were disciplined in February after they handed out hundreds of fetus dolls at Goddard and Roswell High Schools before classes. The complaint describes the dolls as two inches in length and “the actual size and weight of a developing unborn child at 12 weeks’ gestation.” Attached to the dolls was a verse from the Bible: “For you formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother's womb. I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are your works.” “With a tangible and compelling communication medium,” the suit says, Plaintiffs sought to inform the other students of the truth about abortion, to point them to God, the Creator and protector of life in the womb, to encourage them to protect the life of the unborn, and to provide information concerning alternatives to abortion that would result in saving the babies instead of destroying them. Liberty Counsel, a conservative advocacy group, is representing the plaintiffs, who are seeking injunctive relief and the return of dolls that were confiscated by school officials. Under the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community Sch. Dist., 393 U.S. 503 (1969), officials can only censor student speech that would seriously disrupt classroom or school activities. And pro-life activists in the nation’s schools have a track record of success in cases involving such materials as buttons, t-shirts and flyers. Earlier this year, a New Jersey judge found a student was improperly suspended for distributing pro-life flyers, noting there was no evidence that other students were upset by the flyers and “this somehow caused a disruption to the learning environment.” C.H. v. Bridgeton Board of Education. But there appears to be no case that addresses the distribution in schools of a graphic pro-life prop such as a rubber fetus. The Relentless in Roswell plaintiffs started out handing out more innocuous religious materials, including candy canes and painted “affirmation rocks.” On Jan. 29, they first attempted to distribute the rubber fetuses to which they had attached, in addition to the Bible verse, contact information for a church-affiliated pregnancy counseling center. Before classes started that day, a Goddard High administrator allegedly told the Relentless students, “It’s time to shut this down … Some people are getting offended.” He then confiscated containers holding hundreds of the rubber babies. At the Roswell High campus, the principal sent an e-mail to faculty which said the dolls should be confiscated since “These materials have NOT been approved from our central office for distribution.” The prior approval issue is likely to be part of the Roswell Independent School District's defense. The district's policy says in part: “Promotional activities must be approved by the school principal.” But the Relentless students say in their suit that the rubber babies were not “'advertising' or 'promotional' items in any commercial sense; they 'promoted' only [pro-life] ideas.” As far as offensiveness, the rubber fetuses may be more extreme than flyers and t-shirts. But in the recent “Bong Hits 4 Jesus” case, the Supreme Court rejected the idea that student speech is “proscribable because it is plainly 'offensive.'” Morse v. Frederick, 127 S. Ct. 2618 (2007). Even if the dolls upset some students, the Roswell district won't carry the day unless it can show “a disruption to the learning environment.” added by: Stoneyroad

Britney Spears Accused of Child Abuse

Britney Spears is the subject of a new investigation following a former bodyguard’s alleging that she abused her two sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James. However, inside sources say that the troubled pop star and her management are not concerned over the claims made by Fernando Flores in the UK’s Sun . Flores says he told investigators that Spears beat one of her sons with a belt and fed them food they were allergic to which in turn made them violently ill. He also claimed he had no choice but to resign from the job as a result of her “erratic” behavior (he said he was subject to Britney Spears nude come-ons). Team BS says the child abuse allegations are … well, BS. “(Flores’ claims) are simply not true,” says a Spears source. “There are always people around Britney, nannies and such. She is never alone with the boys .” “She would never have the opportunity to do something like that. She’s very loving of the kids. Neither she nor [manager] Larry Rudolph, are worried.” Another source, who previously worked with the starlet, agreed that Britney Spears is the target of a bitter former employee upset by the loss of his job. “Britney may have been a little out of control sometimes but never would harm her babies, never in a million years would she hurt them,” said the insider. Although the Department of Children and Family Services were regulars at Britney’s home years ago, she is now “totally clean” with the department. Also, as of Wednesday, they were unaware of Flores’ request for investigation into the matter, despite the former bodyguard’s claim that he told them. Suspect as Britney Spears’ parenting skills are, it’s hard to give this credibility. Instead, let’s focus on happier topics, like her new Candie’s clothing line !

Who’s being Fooled by Dairy Front Groups?

Click original link for post with external links to thing and it will make more sense. ____________________ I'd like to thank gmail's targeted ad system for, again, enlightening me to the presence of another pro animal-exploitation front group. (Always click on these ads when you get them. These places often pay per click in order to keep their ad up.) Front groups, for those of you who don't know, are groups designed to protect industries that are failing due to various reasons- exposure for cruelty to animals, health reasons, environmental reasons, worker exploitation, oil spills (BP has one), etc. The Center for Consumer Freedom is one of the most famous of these groups and has attacked everyone from doctors studying obesity to anti-smoking proponents. Today's front group is the Real California Milk campaign, who espouses on their sight that “99% of California dairy farms are family owned”. Well, since 95-99% of these farms are the dreaded “factory farms” then we know now that most factory farms are “family farms”. So if you read into the site, it is telling you the truth about the industry- when people say “family farm” it often still means “factory farm”. My favorite part is the Happy Cows section, trying to convince us that every drop of milk is “made with 100% pure happiness!” A video on the page shows green pastures with cows tagged for milking and slaughter, factory farming pens and milking parlor machines in nice, soft lighting, and baby cows just birthed fromn their mothers shortly before being torn away from them to be made into future dairy cows or veal. This footage is juxtaposed with interviews with the farmers who exploit, beat, confine, forcefully impregnate, kidnap, and kill discussing how much they love their animals. I guess business owners have to do what they have to do when so many undercover videos come out showing horrible abuse on dairy farms. One of the biggest messages of the video is that the cows “need” these farmers to exploit them in order to live (before they are killed of course), and thus, the relationship involves mutual respect and help. Talk about ridiculous. It doesn't take an animal rightsist to realize that when you force an animal to breed and force the babies into these farming conditions, that they are not voluntarilly doing anything. It's also quite true that farm animals survive quite well outside of dairy farms. Take the rescued veal calves living out their lives at Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary as an example. Another apparently touching section of a video is a farmer patting himself on the back because, after his cows are dragged to the milking parlor (in which machines are attached to them to extract the milk that should have gone to their calves- who are sent to slaughter for veal and beef), he offers them a soft bed of hay in the pen they are dragged back to, with clean water to boot! What kind of industry is this where hay to lay on top of in a prison and clean water are extreme luxuries? It's funny watching these farmers trying to hide their desire for capital behind “caring” for the cows- of which every measure is based on how much they can get her to produce. There is a constant insistence that if a cow is fed correctly, that's how she produces. That is the main concern here- not the actual well being and desires of the cows, just how much milk they make. What happens when she stops? Oh more rape and kidnapping and if she still doesn't produce enough- slaughter. At the end they claim animal liberationists have something to gain from calling for the abolition of the exploitation of animals. Really? What's that exactly? The same person says he'd invite anyone to see his farm. That's all well and good for the ad online, but in reality he'd call the cops and prosecute people for trespassing or for taking pictures of the animals- something punishable by “terrorism” laws in many areas. Even so, most farm tours never include the slaughter process or veal crates. That way, they can send people away, still able to deny that those things happen. So, bravo, “Real California Milk”! You've actually taught me more about why I oppose the dairy industry- including the “family” farms. Keep up the good work and misinformation. You might be able to combat the fact that a new undercover video comes out every month that most people can not make it through due to the cruelty involved in the dairy industry. added by: animalia_libero
