Paul McDonald Explains His Pre-‘American Idol’ Rap-Video Cameo

On ‘Idol Party Live,’ McDonald talks about his appearance in KC Jockey’s 2008 ‘Rub Your Body’ video. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Rya Backer Paul McDonald Photo: MTV News Back in 2008, Paul McDonald hadn’t even dreamed of auditioning for “American Idol” and probably had no idea who Nikki Reed was . Instead, he was on tour with his band, the Grand Magnolias, and, on a rare off day, decided to roll into Atlanta to see his manager. Little did he know that infamy awaited. See, on that day, McDonald and his bandmates unwittingly appeared in a rap video for KC Jockey, an artist under the tutelage of Akon. Sadly, much like the video itself, McDonald’s rather amazing cameos (he smiled a lot even back then) went unnoticed — until the singer began making waves on “Idol,” at which point Jockey’s “Rub Your Body” clip quickly made waves across the show’s many fan sites. It is, to be quite honest, one of the most inexplicable things you’ll ever see (McDonald makes his first appearance as a background dancer around the 2:20 mark). And so, when he stopped by the MTV Newsroom last week, we had to ask the beaming crooner just how the rather amazing bit of music history came to be. “This was a rap video that I stumbled into,” he laughed on MTV News’ “Idol Party Live,” which streams live Thursdays at noon on MTV.com. “Back in the day, my manager lived in Atlanta, and we were going to a Raconteurs concert at the Tabernacle, and he lives in this big complex where a bunch of rappers … lived, and we walked in there and they were like, ‘Hey, Akon is filming a video in the penthouse upstairs, you guys should go up and say “what’s up!,” ‘ because he knew we were in a band. “And as soon as we went up, everyone was partying, and they’re like, ‘Guys, come in here! Get in the video!’ So I got in there and, yes, I made my rap-video debut,” he continued. “I thought it was an Akon video the whole time. It ended up being KC Jockey ‘Rub Your Body.’ ” But rather than be embarrassed by his cameo — and, with the dancing he displays, he probably should be — McDonald has come to embrace his brief dalliance into the world of hip-hop. As he put it, it may pay dividends down the road. “It’s my rap-video debut,” he smiled. “I got some street cred.” Don’t miss “Idol Party Live” every Thursday at noon on MTV.com for analysis, celebrity guests and even some karaoke — get in the conversation by tweeting with the hashtag #idolparty! Jessie J Talks Hobbies, Local Slang On Her MTV News ‘First Date’

We took the British songstress to a New York pub before her debut album, Who You Are, dropped Stateside on Tuesday. By Rya Backer, with reporting by Steven Roberts Jessie J Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — MTV News’ First Date series has taken us to some of the city’s finest establishments (Joe’s Shanghai in Chinatown, the Viacom cafeteria) as we’ve gotten up close and personal with up-and-coming artists we knew were well on their way to stardom. Our latest edition, featuring Jessie J, was extra special because we caught the British songstress the day before her musical-guest debut on “SNL.” Ms. J guided her date, MTV News’ Steven Roberts, through a traditional English breakfast as she talked about, well, everything but her music. It should be noted that Jessie has already penned songs for pop royalty, including a co-writing credit on Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA,” and her debut album, Who You Are, has already gone platinum in the U.K., where she’s considered something like pop royalty herself. Who You Are was released in the States on Tuesday (April 12) and features such tracks as the insanely vulgar, catchy “Do It Like a Dude” and the super sweet, Dr. Luke-produced “Price Tag.” That said, Jessie and Steven spent a lovely March afternoon at the Clerkenwell on the Lower East Side, where the pop singer took on essential getting-to-know-you topics like least-favorite words (hers is “slice”), hobbies (hers include cleaning, drawing and cooking, and she even offered to make Steven her famous lamb lasagna) and local slang. Most important, they tackled if and how the Brits were taught about the American Revolution (answer: “you don’t get taught it in school”). School was never one of her strong suits, though, Jessie admitted. “I was so bad at history, math, science, geography … anything academic.” She added, “I really tried; it just never clicked with me. Every single report was, ‘Jessica could do with not distracting people with her voice.’ ” Topics also veered toward the serious, namely what she noted in her five-year-plan: “I think one of my ultimate dreams is to be able to make enough money to give money away and still be comfortable.” Specifically, she’d like to help give back with “youth clubs around U.K. … now they have youth vans, where basically the kids go on and the doors open and they just have like, PlayStations, and that to me, that’s not communicating.” Did you enjoy our latest edition of First Date? Sleigh Bells On MTV’s Musical March Madness: ‘Expect The Unexpected’

Tournament tips off Monday, and the Brooklyn duo like their chances. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Rya Backer Sleigh Bells’ Alexis Krauss Photo: Michael Burnell/Redferns Much like the actual March Madness tournament, MTV’s second annual Musical March Madness brackets are filled with upstart bands looking to shock the world. Everywhere you looked this year, there were unknown acts making big moves — everyone from Mumford & Sons and Florence and the Machine to the Black Keys and Cage the Elephant — but perhaps no band went from obscurity to the big time quite like Sleigh Bells. The Brooklyn duo broke out with their squalling, squelching debut Treats. So it should probably come as no surprise that, as we gear up for the tipoff of the 2011 MMM on Monday, the Bells are making preparations for a deep run in the tournament. And, in keeping with the spirit of dark-horse contenders like the Butler Bulldogs (who came within a desperation 3-point heave of upsetting Duke in the 2010 NCAA finals), they’re entering firmly as underdogs — which suits them just fine. “We are definitely an underdog,” singer Alexis Krauss laughed. “I don’t know … it’s a bit overwhelming. But I’m appealing to you as the underdog to try and go out at least fighting a good fight.” And, really, that battling spirit is perhaps Sleigh Bells’ best shot at making their way to the MMM championship. They already know they’ll face tough challenges from established acts like Linkin Park and Panic! at the Disco and up-and-comers like Adele , and if they survive that, they might just run into defending champs Coheed and Cambria in the finals. But as Krauss put it, underdog or not, her band possesses a trait that none of the other MMM bands have: Namely, a lot of weapons. And genuine psychosis. “Have you seen our videos? In my first video, I was walking around wielding a baseball bat. In my second video, I was pushing [guitarist/producer] Derek [Miller]out of a car, and he was covered in blood. So clearly we have some tricks up our sleeves,” she explained. “Derek, he knows his basketball, he knows his stuff. We already have jerseys made; we’re ready to go. So, I don’t know, expect the unexpected. And we may not just use basketballs, we may use baseball bats and switchblades. Who knows? We’re psychos.” MTV’s 2011 Musical March Madness Tournament begins Monday, March 14, when we reveal the full field of 64 bands that will battle for the championship. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act made the cut, it’ll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM — but get ready, it’s gonna be a war. Related Videos MTV’s Musical March Madness Is Back For 2011

Jay-Z’s Yankee Memorabilia Is A Home Run, Fans Say

‘The Yankees selling Jay-Z stuff is just the best of both worlds,’ one fan says of Hov endorsing limited-run apparel ahead of concerts with Eminem. By MTV News staff Jay-Z and Yankees merchandise at Yankee Stadium Photo: Rya Backer/ MTV News Jay-Z already has one clothing line in Rocawear, and now that the Brooklyn rapper has partnered with the Yankees to co-brand threads in anticipation of his and Eminem’s September concerts , does Hov have a new empire on his hands? Well, not quite, since the Jay-Z/Yankee pact is only for a limited time . But MTV News hit the Bronx to get the word on whether the partnership is a home run. “I thought it was pretty cool, I think it’s cool that he’s doing stuff with the Yankees,” Paulette Esparza told MTV News. “The design is cool.” The line features an array of T-shirts, jerseys with S. Carter and the number four printed on the back (Jay’s birthday is December 4) and a series of fitted hats, including an all-black Yankees cap with The Blueprint 3 insignia on the side. The memorabilia is on sale, only at Yankee Stadium, through September 14. Despite the limited run, interest in the items appears to be high. (It remained unclear at press time whether Eminem would strike a similar deal with his hometown Detroit Tigers baseball team.) “I really like the hat, the hat is pretty cool,” Lauren Mastroianni said while visiting the ballpark. “I was just about to say that,” her friend Mike Nalafronte chimed in about the fitted cap. “With the emblem on it, I like that.” The marriage between Jay-Z and the Yankees began last year as the storied baseball franchise marched toward the World Series, which they eventually captured over the Philadelphia Philles in six games last October. Jay’s “Empire State of Mind” (featuring Alicia Keys) became the unofficial anthem of the team after captain Derek Jeter used the track for his at-bat music. Jay-Z then performed the number with Alicia Keys before Game 2 in New York and later rode with the team during their championship parade. The song also became the rapper’s first Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper, and the Yankees earned their 27th championship. “The Yankees selling Jay-Z stuff is just the best of both worlds, isn’t it,” tourist Alex Matthewson noted. What do you think of Jay-Z teaming with the Yankees to make limited-run threads? Tell us in the comments! Related Photos Jay-Z And The Yankees Team-Up To Represent New York Related Artists Jay-Z

‘I don’t think there’s ever been a bigger high in the 21 years’ of the band, Billie Joe Armstrong says of Broadway debut. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Rya Backer Green Day at the opening of “American Idiot” on Broadway on Tuesday Photo: Jason Kempin/ Getty Images New York — On Tuesday night in New York, the Great White Way got a little bit more punk rock when Green Day officially opened their Broadway opus, “American Idiot.” The band was joined by the show’s cast, as well as a number of celebrity fans like Donald Trump, Zachary Quinto and Paul Rudd to celebrate the show’s debut at the St. James Theatre. Admittedly, having a Broadway show might be the least punk rock thing in the universe, but Green Day couldn’t have been prouder to see all their hard work hit that stage and rock up midtown Manhattan. “I don’t think there’s ever been a bigger high in the 21 years that we’ve been a band together,” Billie Joe Armstrong told MTV News on the red carpet before the curtain rose on the show. Armstrong was equally taken by the fact that the band, and those involved with the show, were able to take an album like American Idiot and make it something that people could see in Broadway musical form. “You make this crazy record that’s political and it’s a rock opera and it has [been] brought to flesh and blood,” he said. “People actually acting it out onstage in pretty much the linear exact way you thought it was going to come out. It’s amazing.” The guys recently admitted that they are so moved by the adaptation that it made them cry . “All of us actually came to tears, because you don’t get to see Green Day play live if you’re actually in Green Day,” bassist Mike Dirnt said. “But to see these voices and the way all the cast were singing, you just abandon hope of a tissue and let ’em stream. … [We were like,] ‘No, that’s allergies, man!’ ” Related Videos Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’ On Broadway Related Photos The Evolution Of: Green Day Related Artists Green Day

Conan O’Brien’s Fans Weigh In On TBS Move

‘I’ll watch him anywhere,’ one loyal Coco fan tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Rya Backer Conan O’Brien Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images In just under a year, Conan O’Brien has gone from the host of late-night TV’s most venerated institution to a guy attempting to launch a new show on a basic-cable channel that only recently got into the late-night game. It’s quite a turnaround for the floppy-haired comedian, and it remains to be seen if his move to TBS leads to a resurgence or irrelevance. Only time … and ratings … and talent bookings … and continued pop-culture relevance … and any number of other factors will tell. For now, all we can do is follow Conan’s live theatrical comedy tour , read his tweets and wonder what might be. Joining MTV News in such speculation are some of Conan’s fans, who were roaming Times Square after the TBS news broke and who shared their thoughts on the move with us. “I don’t really know what a TBS is,” deadpanned Kenna Udemba, neatly encapsulating Team Coco’s biggest problem as they try to attract eyeballs for the November launch of the new show. “I never really heard of it. I don’t think I’ll be watching it.” Others, however, have vowed to seek out O’Brien wherever and whenever he pops up on the boob tube. “I will totally watch Conan on TBS,” Jierra Clark declared. “I’ll watch him anywhere. He was always my favorite. I think he’s hilarious, and I miss him.” Adam Francique seconded that all-for-Coco-and-Coco-for-all sentiment. “I think he had a specific audience, not just the NBC audience,” he said. “I think his crew is going to go straight from NBC to TBS.” And once there, viewers will find a channel that’s strived to brand itself as a destination for comedy, from its syndicated offerings like “Family Guy” and “The Office” to the original show “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne” to its burgeoning late-night lineup of Conan at 11 p.m. and “Lopez Tonight” at midnight. “I think it’s a good double-header,” Jessica Dub

Justin Bieber Fans Come From All Over The World To ‘View’ Taping

‘I came all the way from the Philippines to see Justin,’ one fan says. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Rya Backer Justin Bieber performs on “The View” on Monday Photo: ABC While the crowd inside “The View” studio on Monday (March 22) was full of women who traveled from all over to hear the opinions of the show’s five hosts, the crowd outside the studio was mostly full of teenage girls hoping to either get inside to see Justin Bieber perform or, at the very least, catch a glimpse of him leaving the studio. How long had they been waiting? “Well, since 1 o’clock [Sunday], but then we went home and took a break, but then we saw people here at 10 o’clock at night so then we came down and that’s when we started waiting,” April Augostineloi told MTV News. “We’ve waited for so long, we went to the Roosevelt Field Mall. We never go to see him. We’ve only went to one concert … and the concert was amazing and we really hope we get to see him. We really like him a lot.” Another fan, Amanda Pine, also waited hours to try and see Bieber on the show. “Well, I would bust out crying,” she shared, adding that she too missed out on a chance to see him at the mall. ” ‘Cause we waited at the mall for 22 hours and we got inside and when they said it was canceled, we just busted out crying.” Cassidy Mavros said that she had been waiting to see Bieber since 4 a.m. “He’s hot!” she exclaimed. “I will cry. We’ve been here since 4 this morning. We got up at, like, 2 [a.m.].” Lauren Famiano may have been on line earlier, if she and her pals hadn’t gotten lost on their way to “The View” studios. “I’m gonna cry. We’ve been here since 2 o’clock in the morning and we got lost here, so I hope we get in. We got here at like, 6:30, but we got lost in the city,” she explained. “So we had to find our way here.” Another fan, Stephanie DaSilva, added that if she didn’t get into the show she would “flip out … I woke up mad early for this. I told my teacher I would be here.” “Well, it’s my birthday on April 19, so I came all the way from the Philippines to see Justin Bieber,” fan Clara Giron explained. “I saw it on the Internet. I dragged my mom. I told my mom I’m going to see Justin Bieber here. I’m lined up. I’m starting to cry now. All my friends are Justin Bieber fans and I can’t believe I’m here,” she said. “Hopefully he sees this video — I want to tell him come over to the Philippines; everyone loves him there.” Related Videos Sneak Peek: ‘The Diary Of Justin Bieber’ Related Photos Behind-The-Scenes Of ‘Diary Of Justin Bieber’: Chelsea Piers Behind-The-Scenes Of ‘Diary Of Justin Bieber’: Paris

MGMT Make Love To Lady Gaga On Congratulations

‘We don’t know if our new album is crap or not,’ Andrew Van Wyngarden says. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Rya Backer MGMT’s Andrew Van Wyngarden Photo: MTV News MGMT didn’t set out to make the stereotypical sophomore album, but, in a roundabout way, that’s exactly what their upcoming Congratulations (due April 13) is. An ambitious, swirling, downright paranoid thing, full of songs that try very hard to shed much of the fanbase they earned with the success of “Kids,” Congratulations is very much the end product of a young band facing the twin specters of fame and expectation, staring them down, then saying “F— it, let’s go surfing.” Which, of course, is exactly how the guys planned it. “I think the album in general is kind of, like, lyrically and musically, a reaction to fame and success. We said that it wasn’t going to be, but then we realized that was impossible, because we were just writing songs that were coming from whatever mindset we were in at the time,” MGMT’s Andrew Van Wyngarden told MTV News. “And the mindset we were in was post year-and-a-half of touring, chaos, like we had been in a tornado of chaos, so we didn’t really know what to do, so we wrote songs that ended up being about that. But they’re also about that pseudo-mystical … bullsh–.” Case in point — the title track, which Van Wyngarden describes as “kind of meandering upon the possibly negative effects of success,” or the very weird “Lady Dada’s Nightmare,” which is about, well … “It’s about having sex with Lady Gaga,” Van Wyngarden laughed. Congratulations is a very heady trip indeed, featuring 12-minute songs about surfing in Siberia, jittery odes to Brian Eno and the first single, a kitchen-sink affair called “Flash Delerium” (which sounds an awful lot like the Velvet Underground’s “Who Loves the Sun”). There’s a whole lot to digest, which is why the band (supposedly) decided to have fans hear it as an entire piece, rather than through a string of singles. Though these days they maintain that whole ideal was taken out of context. “We didn’t say that we weren’t releasing singles. What we said was that this album didn’t really have immediately accessible, catchy dance songs, like the first album had … I don’t even know why I said that,” Van Wyngarden sighs. “But we kind of felt like it’s something that’s best first listened to as a whole, though, as it turns out, we did release a single. You know, ‘Flash Delerium.’ ” And though it was probably difficult to pry one song out of Congratulations’ craw, “Delerium” works as the first single, most notably because it serves notice that MGMT have been through the ringer, and — like it or not — they’ve come out as a different kind of band — which, of course, is exactly how the guys planned it. “It’s kind of the most, um, everywhere-at-once song on the album; it’s like chaos. It’s supposed to be about kind of going nuts and feeling completely overwhelmed, and everything’s falling apart,” Van Wyngarden laughed. “And it’s funny to watch people’s reactions to it, because it’s kind of a love-it-or-hate it thing … we just kind of kept piecing it together, just wanted to make something that felt like you were going mad. And there’s nothing really pleasant about that. “We went through periods of paranoia, where there’s all these people around you telling you things, then you never really know if you’re doing something bad,” he continued. “I think that’s why a lot of artists make really crappy albums, because everybody’s telling them it’s so good … so we don’t know if our new album is crap or not.” Related Artists MGMT Lady Gaga
