Singer Phil Labonte tours picked-over convenience store, feels aftershock at the Tokyo airport. By Gil Kaufman All That Remains Photo: Prosthetic Records Massachusetts metalcore band All That Remains had barely arrived in Tokyo last Friday for a soundcheck for their show that night when a massive 9.0-magnitude earthquake shook Japan and they found themselves caught in the midst of one of the worst disasters to ever befall the island nation. While Tokyo was mostly spared the devastation that nearly wiped out a number of northern cities closer to the epicenter following the deadly combination of the largest quake to hit Japan combined with a massive tsunami, ATR singer Phil Labonte and his crew definitely felt the ground shake. They ran down five flights to the street to see what was going on as the light fixtures and doors shook back and forth violently in the building. As they hit the street, they could see skyscrapers swaying from the initial trembler and several strong aftershocks. In an exclusive video diary recorded for MTV News on his iPhone, Labonte described the aftermath of the quake and the challenges the band faced in trying to catch a flight out of the shattered nation Saturday. The clip opens with images of confused and scared-looking Japanese citizens standing in the street as aftershocks continued to rattle the city. “Our area around [the venue] wasn’t really affected in the way [the northern city of] Sendai was. There was no tsunami, there was no major damage to any buildings,” he said, noting that you could sense “something has gone on” when you walked around on the streets outside his hotel. After a large aftershock in the middle of the night on Friday that set off alarms in the hotel, Labonte said he packed up his bags as a precaution in case he had to run outside in an emergency. “That’s really all that I’ve been doing is watching the news,” he said, before walking across the street to tour a neighborhood convenience store. Confirming reports, Labonte filmed images of store shelves stripped bare of food and water, with row upon row of essentials snatched up by worried citizens. “As you can see, a lot of food is not here,” he said. “You imagine all these shelves would be full in one of the most modern cities in the world. … Most of the water’s been picked away clean … and it happened pretty fast too.” While awaiting their flight to San Francisco at the Narita International Airport on Saturday morning, Labonte said things were initially calm. With the exception of a few bedrolls laid out on the floor by people who seemed stuck at the airport, he said things looked pretty business-as-usual despite the emerging picture of the massive damage done to northern cities such as Sendai and the then-burgeoning threat posed by failing nuclear-reactor cooling systems. “There’s some places where it looks like people have been camping out, trying to get out. I guess there’s been a lot of delayed flights,” he said. With nearly eight hours to go before their flight left, Labonte checked back in a short time later to report a strong aftershock, which he said caused the large floor-to-ceiling windows in the departure terminal to flex in and out. “It’s still a pretty active situation. It’s changing pretty much by the minute,” he said. Finally, the band made it onto the flight, and Labonte reported that the band and crew were all OK. “I should take a second to send our deepest sympathy to all the people that have had loved ones lost. … It’s really awful and we’re very fortunate to not only have gotten out of Japan with no injuries and survived with not a scratch on anyone, but to be able to actually document this.” A number of artists, from Katy Perry and Lady Gaga to the Jonas Brothers , Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus and Diddy have urged fans to donate to the Red Cross and offered their condolences to the victims of the natural disaster. For more information on what you can do to help with earthquake and tsunami relief efforts in Japan, head to MTV Act , or text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Annalynne McCord Gets Naked For Something

Compared to yesterday’s pictures of AnnaLynne McCord flashing her little boobies for something I don’t know anything about, these shots are a little lame. I can’t see anything, what the hell? If she’s going to do a photoshoot half naked for women’s handbags I think we should be able to at least see her breasts. That’s just common sense. In fact, who needs any shots of the bags themselves, just get AnnaLynne naked and be done with it.

Liam Neeson Avoids Mufasa Imitation For ‘Chronicles Of Narnia’ Lion Voice

‘I tried not to think of James Earl Jones!’ he laughs to MTV News about ‘Voyage of the Dawn Treader’ preparation. By Eric Ditzian Photo: 20th Century Fox Liam Neeson deserves our respect. The guy is committed. When tasked with portraying a talking lion in the “Chronicles of Narnia” series, he packed up his bags, gathered up his family and headed off to Kenya for some on-the-ground research. “We got to see them killing, eating, mating, sleeping, roaring. I can see why these creatures are kings of the jungle,” he told MTV News. “They have this wonderful majesty and element of danger, this mysterious look in their eye that seems to be a thousand years old.” Yes, the Oscar nominee braved an African safari all so the voice of his CGI lion would have an air of authenticity. Hey, makes sense to us. But as even Neeson admitted, voicing the creature — the Jesus-like beast called Aslan — was “an act of imagination,” and so his research and commitment to the character didn’t stop there. For “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,” the third installment in the franchise, which hit theaters Friday (December 10), Neeson gathered up the design team’s computer mockups of Aslan and took them home with him. “I stuck those all over my bedroom so that when I woke up in the morning, I could see this lion,” he said. Yet with recollections of real-life lions in his head and animated renderings surrounding him, the key to voicing Aslan was one simple directive: Don’t imitate “The Lion King”! “I tried not to think of James Earl Jones!” he laughed, referring to Jones’ portrayal of Mufasa, the venerable king in Disney’s 1994 film. “That would be a little too intimidating.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Forget About Melting Steel with Sunshine… How About Rocks? (Video)

Image: Youtube 2 Square Meters of Sunlight is All it Takes Last summer, I wrote about a cool video that showed how a solar oven could be used to melt steel . It’s a good demonstration of just how much solar energy is hitting the Earth (it’s one thing to know abstractly, but it’s much more memorable to see it in action). Here’s another very cool video in the same vein, except that they don’t just stick to steel (which has a melting point of approx. 1,370 °C/2,500 °F). The best quo… Read the full story on TreeHugger

‘World Of Jenks’ Documents ‘Different Subcultures In America’

Filmmaker Andrew Jenks sleeps with the homeless, parties with rapper Maino in new series premiering Sunday night after the Video Music Awards. By Nuzhat Naoreen Andrew Jenks Photo: MTV News At 19, Andrew Jenks, star of MTV’s newest documentary series “World of Jenks,” wanted to know what it would be like to live in a nursing home. So, he packed up his bags, grabbed a few friends and moved in, capturing the entire experience along the way on film. The resulting documentary, “Room 335,” earned him tons of recognition and would serve as the basis for his new show, which premieres on September 12, right after the 2010 Video Music Awards . In the series, Jenks immerses himself into the lives of a variety of people. “I move into all these different subcultures in America and try to get an understanding of what is really going on,” said Jenks, who started making documentaries as a child living abroad in order to capture the culture around him. So far, his latest project has had him sleeping on the streets and partying with rap star Maino . “You know, we’ve done everything from living with a homeless girl in San Francisco to living with an animal rescuer in Miami, to living with a high school football star in West Texas,” said Jenks, who spends about a week with each individual. “I’ve been able to move into all different sorts of weird, funny, interesting, dynamic, unique, situations and really experience them firsthand, and been able to capture them with our cameras.” Of course, the experience hasn’t been without its challenges. Jenks has put his life on the line more than once while filming the show (he said going undercover with an animal rescuer was particularly risky) and has been attacked by bystanders who don’t appreciate being filmed. “When we moved into the streets of San Francisco, we thought the homeless kids might kind of be into it,” said Jenks. “But they hated it. They hated us. They didn’t want people filming them.” His subjects, however, such as a young autistic man who was initially cautious of letting Jenks into his life, have generally warmed to him rather quickly. “I think with a lot of the subjects, it’s a matter of showing that I sincerely care, and I do,” said Jenks, adding that he keeps in touch with the people he films. “I want to get to know who you are and what you stand for.” Jenks will be at the VMAs on Sunday, but said his mind will be elsewhere. “I think I’ll be kind of jittery and waiting for the episode to air,” he said. Watch “World of Jenks” Sunday night at 11 p.m. ET, right after the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday. Related Artists Maino

‘Jersey Shore’ Newbie Deena Fits In With Castmates, Snooki Says

‘Not [just] anybody can survive in this house,’ Snooks says of her pal. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Audrey Kim Deena Nicole Cortese Photo: MTV News Deena Nicole Cortese is looking to make a splash as the newest addition to the “Jersey Shore” house. The New Jersey native, who originally auditioned for season one of the guido-fest, has been pals with Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, for two years. When the chance to party on the boardwalk with her rowdy bestie presented itself, Cortese said she jumped at the opportunity. “When [Snooki] invited me down I was just like, ‘I’m down the shore anyway. This is what I do for a good time always,'” Cortese reasoned, adding that she has tons of experience living it up in Seaside Heights. “I lose jobs because I’m down the shore so much,” she said. “So, I was like, ‘You know what. I’m packing my bags, let’s go.’ ” She may be ready to party like her friend but unlike Snooki, Cortese isn’t combing beachside bashes for a relationship. “I snook for love and she snooks for a good time,” Snooki said. Cortese concurred, adding that she’s not looking for a gorilla to call her own anytime soon. “We’re two peas in a pod but a little bit different,” she said. Cortese plans to help her girl in her quest for seaside romance but insisted viewers won’t catch the two scrapping over the same juicehead. “We won’t step on each other’s toes,” Cortese said. The 23-year-old is stepping into a house packed with colorful personalities including Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino, Jenni “JWoww” Farley and Paul “DJ Pauly D” Del Vecchio. Cortese said her chill nature sets her apart from the crew. “I’m different because I’m just a personable person. I don’t take things to heart. People can make fun of me ’til the day I die and I will just take it in and be like, ‘Yeah, you know what? Whatever,’ ” Cortese laughed. “I just don’t care what people think and I think that’s what everybody in the house loves about me. They can bust on me all the time and the next day I’ll just be like, ‘Alright, get real.’ ” Snooki said that Cortese fits right in with the “Shore” collective and that her transition into the cast has been drama-free. “Not [just] anybody can survive in this house and the fact that the first 24 hours that I brought her in … everything was cool I was like, ‘Alright, this is gonna be a good summer,’ ” Snooki said. What are you looking forward to seeing from “Jersey Shore” castmember Deena? Let us know in the comments below! Don’t miss “Jersey Shore” every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Mississippi School Pays $35K in Damages to Lesbian Teenager Over Prom Dispute

Lesbian teen wins $35K in prom case Mississippi school pays damages to lesbian teen over prom dispute By the CNN Wire Staff July 20, 2010 1:14 p.m. EDT Constance McMillen in her own words (CNN) — A school district in Mississippi has agreed to pay a recent high school graduate $35,000 in damages and adopt a policy prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation, according to a statement released Tuesday by the American Civil Liberties Union. The settlement comes after the ACLU sued the school district in Fulton, Mississippi, on behalf of Constance McMillen, a lesbian teen who was told by Itawamba Agricultural High School officials she and her girlfriend would be ejected if they attended the school-sponsored prom. The agreement, which was filed Tuesday, ends the lawsuit. “I'm so glad this is all over. I won't ever get my prom back, but it's worth it if it changes things at my school,” McMillen said in a statement released Tuesday. The prom, originally scheduled for April 2, was eventually canceled by school board officials who previously said they reached their decision based on “the education, safety and well-being of [its] students.” Officials at McMillen's former high school are not commenting at this time, and a call to the north Mississippi school district seeking comment Tuesday wasn't immediately returned. According to the ACLU statement, McMillen “suffered humiliation and harassment after parents, students and school officials executed a cruel plan to put on a decoy prom for her while the rest of her classmates were at a private prom 30 miles away.” McMillen believes the alternative prom she was sent to was a sham because only a handful of people attended. “A lot of people were talking about how it was a joke just set up for me,” she previously said. In March, a federal judge ruled that McMillen's First Amendment rights were violated when her school district refused to let her attend her prom in a tux with a girl. That was good news, said her attorney, Christine Sun, senior counsel with the ACLU's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender project. It set a precedent and helped broadcast an important statement, which was made stronger by virtue of where it came from, she said. “We're in a conservative area of the country, where people tend to think we can do what we like,” said Sun, who lives in New York but has traveled multiple times to Mississippi on McMillen's behalf. “This case sends a strong message that that's not going to fly anymore.” In 2004, the national gay rights group GLSEN — the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network — issued a report that said of all 50 states, Mississippi had the most hostile environment for gay youths. “We hope this judgment sends a message to schools that they cannot get away with discriminating against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students,” said Bear Atwood, interim legal director at the ACLU of Mississippi. Since McMillen's name made national headlines, the lesbian teen advocate has served as the grand marshal for New York's Gay Pride Parade, she received a $30,000 college scholarship from an anonymous donor, and a Facebook page called “Let Constance Take Her Girlfriend to Prom!” had attracted nearly 410,000 fans as of Tuesday. “It means a lot to me,” McMillen said. “The amount of support helps me to continue with the fight.” added by: EthicalVegan
