Travis Barker Gives Twin Berlin An ‘Incredible’ Opportunity

Blink-182 drummer helped ‘Your Next Record’ contest winners put together their brand-new EP, There Goes My Virtue. By Matt Elias Travis Barker Photo: MTV News Blink-182 ‘s Travis Barker is giving a boost to Boston rock trio Twin Berlin’s EP release Wednesday (February 1). The veteran drummer handpicked the unsigned band out of a sea of submissions for Guitar Center’s “Your Next Record” contest. As part of the grand prize, Twin Berlin got to record a three-song EP produced by Barker himself, resulting in There Goes My Virtue . MTV News caught up with Barker and the band back in November, when they were tinkering away at Red Bull Studios in Los Angeles. Although he’s a percussionist at heart, Barker said he wasn’t just looking for the next great drummer. “There were some bands in the Guitar Center contest that were amazing drummers, but it was more a song thing for [Twin Berlin] — a great song,” Barker said. “They seem hungry, and they all have great personalities and attitudes about the whole thing. I just wanted to help emphasize what they were already doing and clean things up, maybe suggest arrangement ideas, just little things that will make a difference.” For Twin Berlin, the contest was a natural fit. “[Bassist] Sean is a huge Blink fan and everything, and we all really like Travis a lot,” drummer James Janocha said. “So we just figured, ‘Hey, why not enter?’ ” Barker recalled, “When they gave me all the bands’ songs, I didn’t know what the bands’ names were, I didn’t know what the guys looked like, I didn’t know how many people were in the group — it was purely based on one song, and that one song just won me over. I listened to the CD probably every day for three weeks, and that song just resonated with me.” The song Barker refers to, “Can’t Take, Take, Take,” ended up as the first track on the new EP, rounded out by “Don’t Hang Around” and “Give Up on Me.” While the trifecta of songs represents Twin Berlin’s gritty, unapologetic style of rock and roll, the recording process was far from their familiar DIY surroundings. “To get the chance to be able to work in a studio like this, it’s incredible,” guitarist/vocalist Matt Lopez said. “We used to record in this guy’s shed, so this is pretty insane.” Share your review of Twin Berlin’s new EP in the comments below!

Taylor Kitsch Talks ‘All-Or-Nothing’ 2012

Roles in ‘Battleship,’ ‘John Carter’ and ‘Savages’ make the ‘Friday Night Lights’ alum one to watch in 2012. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Taylor Kitsch in “John Carter” Photo: Disney Kids are growing up fast these days. One day, they’re playing fullback for the Dillon Panthers. Next thing you know, they’re saving Mars, selling weed and fighting aliens on a battleship. For Taylor Kitsch , 2012 is the year he grows up. A fan favorite from the “Friday Night Lights” television show, Kitsch makes the transition to full-on action star with “John Carter” and “Battleship.” If that weren’t enough, later in the year, he’ll star in “Savages,” a crime film helmed by one of Hollywood’s most formidable directors, Oliver Stone. And Kitsch knows exactly what he’s getting into: “It’s a pretty all-or-nothing year, right?” “All-or-nothing” is about as close as you can get to properly describing the year Kitsch has in front of him. Aside from starring in “FNL” creator Peter Berg’s next film, “Battleship,” Kitsch is smack-dab in the middle of Disney’s big-budget sci-fi epic “John Carter.” When it comes down to it, the fate of “John Carter” may rest firmly on Kitsch’s abs. “Of course, there’s the physicality,” said Kitsch, explaining his revealing wardrobe, comprised mostly of a glorified loincloth. “You’re pretty out there, not going to lie.” Kitsch insisted that the fashion choices never bothered him because it was true to the character. “It felt right, so it wasn’t such a big deal,” he said. Despite the film’s special effects and high budget, Kitsch said there is something much deeper to this story of a transported Civil War captain. “There’s kind of that stigma with big movies that it’s just action,” Kitsch said. “But with this, it’s really just the core of this guy and his journey of reinventing himself and finding himself again.” With such a full plate, Kitsch said he feels a whole mix of emotions, both good and bad. “I think it’s a bit of everything,” he said. “I’m excited. I’m nervous, but I’m also super proud of it, and I can’t wait to show. Especially from ‘John Carter’ to ‘Battleship’ to ‘Savages,’ that’s such a different landscape of a character.” It’s not just you, Taylor. We’re excited too. What are you waiting for? Your must-see movie needs your support. It’s time to show character, poise and heart. Vote for your picks now at MTV Movie Brawl 2012 ! Prince Harry Throws it Down in San Diego

There was no daring pool party rescue required this time, but Prince Harry still had an eventful night out Saturday at the Belly Up Tavern in Solona Beach, Calif. “He was here!” Meryl Klemow, Belly Up’s manager says, adding that Harry showed up around 9 p.m. with about ten folks, including two “very attractive” young women around his age, neither of whom were “romantic” with Harry or anyone else. Ladies everywhere, you may now exhale. Although Harry and his pals drank beer and tequila, the real agenda of the night was music! “He was watching the bands and really loved the music,” Klemow said. “It seems like Harry and his cohorts were taking a long time to drink their drinks. He was mostly just enjoying the music and drinking was more a side thing.” “He seemed very jovial and joking around and he is a very good dancer. He has some good moves, and whoever taught him to dance did a good job!” Although most of Harry’s two months in the states will be devoted to military training, he will have a few more chances to let loose in the coming weeks. Clarence Clemons, Sax Player For Lady Gaga, Bruce Springsteen, Suffers Stroke

E Street Band member, 69, suffered stroke in his home in Florida. By Jocelyn Vena Clarence Clemons Photo: Getty Clarence Clemons, legendary member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, has suffered a stroke according to The Associated Press. A source close to the saxophonist confirmed to the AP that the 69-year-old suffered the stroke in his Florida home on Sunday night; no further details about his health were currently available at press time. However, Showbiz 411 reported that the musician’s condition is very serious. Most recently, Clemons was featured on Lady Gaga’s massive Born This Way album, appearing on two tracks and performing with her live on “American Idol” last month. Clemons, also known as “The Big Man,” began performing with the E Street Band in 1972, giving an assist on Springsteen’s debut album Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J. . In addition to appearing on 20 albums with Springsteen, including the breakthrough Born to Run, he’s worked with a number of other artists including Gaga, Jackson Browne and Ringo Starr. He’s also appeared in films like “New York, New York”and “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure,” as well as TV shows like “The Wire” and “The Simpsons.” Recently, however, he has had problems with his health, and following the Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s tour in 2009, he had to have both knees replaced and a spinal fusion surgery, according to Rolling Stone. But he vowed, “As long as my mouth, hands and brain still work I’ll be out there doing it.” When MTV News caught up with Gaga’s longtime collaborator, Fernando Garibay, the producer recalled how excited Gaga was to hit the studio with one of her icons for the songs “Hair” and her latest single, “Edge of Glory.” “She grew up listening to Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, and she goes, ‘Can we get Clarence?’ And I go, ‘Of course we can get Clarence. You’re Lady Gaga!’ ” he said. “You can see the years of influence and you can see her lighting up when he’s playing [with her in the studio].” Send your well-wishes to Clarence Clemons in the comments below.
