Happy belated birthday to President Obama! Now, before you go…. Things President Obama Should Do Before His Presidency Ends Yesterday, President Obama celebrated his 52nd birthday and we hope it was a good one. Now, in honor of the continuously growing majority of black folks who still operate on “CP” time (don’t get mad, you’re probably in the number too), we’ve put together a list of things, both serious and suggestive, that we’d like to see the POTUS do before he throws the deuces to the oval office for good. Take a look……and be sure to let us know if we missed anything. Continue reading →
Kim Kardashian may want to remain in hiding a bit longer. The leader of the free world just took shots at her and Kanye West. Sort of. In remarks made in front of Amazon employees in Chattanooga last week, President Obama used Kim and Kanye as examples of a “shift in culture” that is poisoning today’s youth and altering The American Dream. Obama argued that a few years back “kids weren’t monitoring every day what Kim Kardashian was wearing, or where Kanye West was going on vacation, and thinking that somehow that was the mark of success.” The President added: “There has been a shift in culture. We weren’t exposed to the things we didn’t have in the same way that kids these days are… There was not that window into the lifestyles of the rich and famous.” In other words: perhaps it’s not healthy for young people – who follow Kim Kardashian on Twitter and think they are totally her best friend – to know that Kim and Kanye allegedly spent $767K on gold plated toilets . And it’s especially unhealthy when one considers just how Kim got famous enough to afford such items (we’re looking at you, Kim Kardashian sex tape !). Obama noted that he and wife Michelle are “constantly reminding Malia and Sasha of the slightly unreal environment that they’re in – and that that’s not the norm,” while it seems unlikely Kris Jenner is ensuring her children are equally well grounded. This isn’t the first time the President has called out Kanye. He was caught referring to West as a jackass a couple years ago. What do you think of these comments? Are they accurate? Off base? Inappropriate? Spot on? Watch the following video for more and sound off now! Obama Slams Kimye

President Barack Obama has again waded into the controversy that is the death of Trayvon Martin and the subsequent George Zimmerman verdict. Last weekend, he urged the public to honor the deceased, while respecting the verdict. Today’s remarks were more impromptu and less detached. Speaking at the White House about the Martin-Zimmerman case, Obama reacted both personally and as a member of the African-American community. “When Trayvon Martin was first shot, I said that this could have been my son,” he said. “Another way of saying that is Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago.” “When you think about why, in the African-American community at least, there’s a lot of pain around what happened here.” “I think it’s important to recognize that the African-American community is looking at this issue through a set of experiences and a history that … that doesn’t go away.” “There are very few African-American men in this country who have not had the experience of being followed when they are shopping at a department store.” “That includes me. There are probably very few African-American men who have not had the experience of walking across the street and hearing the locks click on the doors of cars.” “That happens to me – at least before I was a senator.” “There are very few African-Americans who have not had the experience of getting on an elevator and a woman clutching her purse nervously and holding her breath until she had the chance to get off.” “That happens often. “I don’t want to exaggerate, but those sets of experiences inform how the African-American community interprets what happened one night in Florida.” “And it’s inescapable for people to bring those experiences to bear.” “The African-American community is also knowledgeable that there is a history of racial disparities in the application of criminal laws, everything from the death penalty to enforcement of drug laws.” “And that ends up having an impact in terms of how people interpret the case.” This past Saturday, Zimmerman was found not guilty by a Florida jury of all charges stemming from the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Martin in 2012. President Obama, who also seemed to reference the Marissa Alexander case with his mention of “racial disparities,” finds himself in an unusual position. As the first African-American U.S. President, many feel he should be more involved in helping lead and shape the national discussion regardng racism. Obama has worked hard, however, to not let his racial background define who he is, and is often reluctant to comment strongly on the subject if at all. Today’s remarks on race reflect that paradox, as Obama tried to express his empathy toward the Martins and others he believed have been wronged. He is willing to point out what he feels are injustices within society, yet is not inclined to offer specific solutions for fear of backlash or making himself the story. By commenting on the verdict, perhaps Obama sought to ease some of the racial tension surrounding the case, yet also reiterate how bad it is. It’s a fine line to walk, and exemplifies what a deeply personal, divisive complex topic this is for so many Americans, even in 2013. Tell us what you think: Did the George Zimmerman jury get it right? And should Obama be weighing in more on the topic of racism? Or less? Or not at all? Sound off below .

Keep in mind this poll happened before Zimmerman walked and over half the people surveyed said they are not satisfied with the way blacks are treated! Via L.A. Times reports : A new poll shows that black Americans have grown more upbeat about their treatment in society after the reelection of President Obama. Earlier this summer, a record 47% said they were satisfied with how blacks were treated in the country — more than at any other time since Gallup started asking the question in 2001. However, Gallup cautioned that the question was asked before George Zimmerman was acquitted in the killing of Trayvon Martin — an event that could dim that rising optimism. Civil rights leaders have called the controversial verdict a wake-up call to those who thought the election of a black president heralded a post-racial era. The Zimmerman case “could prove to be a watershed event in how not just blacks, but all Americans, perceive society’s treatment of blacks today,” Gallup senior editor Lydia Saad wrote in a summary of the results. The research group surveyed more than 4,300 adults, including more than 1,000 black Americans, in June and early July. Researchers and activists say the election of Obama buoyed hopes among African Americans, who saw his political rise as a sign of new possibilities for black advancement and acceptance. Some fear it also distracted attention from disadvantages blacks still face. Even before the Zimmerman verdict, more than half of black Americans remained dissatisfied with the treatment of black people, the Gallup poll showed. They were much more downbeat than whites and Latinos, a majority of whom said they were satisfied with how blacks were treated. Gallup found that black women were less satisfied than black men, with the sharpest differences surfacing among young people. Sixty-three percent of black women ages 18 to 34 were dissatisfied with the treatment of blacks in the United States, compared with 46% of black men in the same age range — a finding that surprised some scholars. “The conventional wisdom would be that young black males are targeted and harassed and therefore should be the least satisfied,” said Franklin D. Gilliam Jr., dean of the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs. Others pointed to the added burdens of sexism for black women. “Stereotypes they face are oftentimes accepted by members of even their own communities,” said Kimberle W. Crenshaw, a professor at the UCLA School of Law. Sad that this is the highest satisfaction rating ever for a Gallup poll and less than half of blacks surveyed were dissatisfied. Is it gonna be another thirty years before we get it right? Continue reading →

She may not be back together with Justin Bieber , but Selena Gomez is definitely modeling for Adidas NEO in a new set of fun pictures. The singer’s fall collection with this brand comes out on July 30 and will include sneakers, denim vests and sleek leggings, some of which she shows off in these first look photos. Said the singer of working with the company and coming out with her clothing line: “I love playing around with fashion and like clothes that are fun, easy to wear and comfortable. My collection has a ‘rock chic’ theme and it’s confident, rebellious and fun. It’s also a little bit darker and I think it encourages girls to put their own stamp on their individuality and show confidence in what they are wearing.” Gomez is a busy young woman these days. Aside from the fashion line, she is releasing a new album in two weeks and then embarking on a new tour. As for hew new single… does it really feature a Bieber voicemail at the outset?!? It sure sounds that way.

Following the success of “Get Lucky,” the first single off their new album Random Access Memories, Daft Punk has teamed with Durex for a line of condoms. Seriously. The Get Lucky (what else) brand showcases their logo alongside a photo of the French twosome with Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers. The endorsement does make some sense, considering the lyrics to the song: “She’s up all night ’til the sun / I’m up all night to get some,” Pharrell croons. “She’s up all night for good fun / I’m up all night to get lucky!” President Barack Obama would no doubt approve. No release date has been set for the condoms, but Durex apparently sent samples out to high profile DJs. Diplo posted a picture of the (empty) box on his Instagram, writing, “Thank god I had those daft punk condoms last night” In other Daft Punk news, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalteris (the musicians behind the robot helmets) will also become action figures. Warning: If you’re most excited by this announceent, you may not even need the condoms at all! And in other, other Daft Punk news, if you haven’t listened to “Evolution of Get Lucky” by PV Nova, do so immediately. The brilliant remix transports the song to every decade from 1920s to the 2020s.
