During a press conference in Cartagena yesterday, standing alongside Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, Barack Obama addressed the Secret Service scandal surrounding up to a dozen agents and five members of the U.S. military. They are accused of soliciting prostitutes in that nation and have been relieved of their posts. Secret Service Scandal: Discussed by President Obama After praising the role of Secret Service employees in general – telling reporters these men and women perform “extraordinary service” on a daily basis – he decreed the reported actions of the men cited in this weekend’s report: “I expect that investigation to be thorough, and I expect it to be rigorous. If it turns out that some of the allegations that have been made in the press are confirmed, then of course I’ll be angry… We are representing the people of the United States, and when we travel to another country, I expect us to observe the highest standards.” California Rep. Darrell Issa, who leads the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, says he isn’t certain whether Congress will hold hearings on the misconduct. But he does find it hard to believe this was an isolated incident. “It’s not about whether the president was in danger this time. It’s whether or not you need to make changes so the American people can have confidence in all of their workforce,” Issa said on Face the Nation yesterday.
Yesterday, news broke of Barack Obama telling the The Atlantic that he preferred Jay-Z to Kanye West; going as far as saying that the latter was “a talented jackass.” Recent G.O.O.D. Music signee Q-Tip begs to differ, though… Continue
For the first time since the 2005 action-romance that brought them together, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie may be set to burn up the big screen together. The Mr. & Mrs. Smith co-stars are in talks to appear alongside Shame’s Michael Fassbender and Javier Bardem in The Counselor , directed by Ridley Scott. According to reports, Brangelina’s project is set to begin in a few months, and the movie will shoot in Europe. Both the Jolie-Pitts and Scott have homes in France. Fassbender will play the title role of a respected lawyer who gets tangled in the drug business, while the film will reportedly deal with very gritty themes. Unlike when they shot Mr. and Mrs. Smith , however, Jolie and Pitt are a bona fide couple – with six kids. Until now they have alternated film projects. “We’re not ones to repeat ourselves, but we’d like to, because now, we’re hopscotching films so one can be with the kids and one’s free to work,” Pitt said. “And why aren’t we doing [movies] together? Why aren’t we doing everything together?” Looks like they soon will be.
Mindy McCready cannot even give birth without controversy. The country singer – who abducted her son in late 2011 and was eventually found cowering with the five-year old in a friend’s closet – welcomed a baby boy into the world last Monday, she confirmed over the weekend, despite reports that she was pregnant with twins. His name is Zayne. “Zayne is truly a blessing and a joy,” McCready and boyfriend David Wilson said in a statement. “It was a long and trying pregnancy; we’re so happy he’s here. There are no words to convey how happy we are.” A rep for McCready says a “misinterpreted sonogram” was to blame for the initial claim of two fetuses. The crooner’s sordid history includes an alleged relationship with cheating baseball star Roger Clemens when she was only 16, along with the incident detailed above and a sex tape . She is also the mother to Zander, 6.
Following comments by Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen – who criticized Ann Romney for “never [working] a day in her life” and, therefore, lacking the knowledge to speak on economic issues – the wife of Mitt Romney finds herself supported by an unlikely ally: Barack Obama. Speaking to Columbus, Ohio television station WCMH yesterday, the President defended the work of stay-at-home moms everywhere, while also emphasizing that family members ought to be off limits in an election. “First of all there is no tougher job than being a mom,” Obama said. “I think this was an ill-advised statement by somebody on television. It’s not something that I subscribe to, and moreover my general rule is you don’t talk about the spouses of elected officials because they’ve got a really tough job. They’re out there supporting their husband or wife who have chosen to serve in public eye. “Sometimes that spouse isn’t volunteering for that job, but they’re doing the best they can supporting somebody they love and they care about. And I think they’re off limits, so on both counts it was the wrong thing to say and I haven’t met Ms. Romney but she seems like a wonderful woman and I know that she’s devoted her life to her family.” Ann Romney also shot back at Rosen this week, telling Fox News women should respect the career choices made by other women and that mothers are perfectly capable of speaking out on the “legacy of debt” she believes Obama is leaving the next generation. Though he does not officially support gay marriage, President Obama voiced opposition to a proposed anti-gay marriage ballot measure in Minnesota today. Obama for America Minnesota Communications Director Kristin Sosanie said: “While the President does not weigh in on every single ballot measure in every state, the record is clear that the President has long opposed divisive and discriminatory efforts to deny rights and benefits to same sex couples.” “That’s what the Minnesota ballot initiative would do – single out and discriminate against committed gay and lesbian couples – and the President does not support it.” The proposed Minnesota marriage amendment reads simply, “Only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Minnesota.” It’s the second time in as many months Obama has weighed in on the issue. The Obama campaign in North Carolina issued a statement in March with the same language in opposition to Amendment One, which would also define marriage in the state’s constitution as between one man and one woman. Just as in North Carolina, same-sex marriage is already banned by a statute in Minnesota. Unlike the North Carolina amendment, the Minnesota amendment does not mention civil unions or domestic partnerships. Today’s news comes after White House press secretary Jay Carney stated that First Lady Michelle Obama – in referencing how Supreme Court decisions will impact whether people can “love whomever we choose” – was not commenting about marriage equality. Her husband, though “evolving” in his views on marriage equality, technically opposed marriage equality and supported civil unions in his 2008 campaign.
Marine To Be Dismissed After Criticizing Obama On Facebook A Marine who criticized President Barack Obama on his Facebook page has committed misconduct and should be dismissed, a military board recommended late Thursday. The Marine Corps administrative board made the decision after a daylong hearing at Camp Pendleton for Sgt. Gary Stein. The board also recommended that Stein be given an other-then-honorable discharge. That would mean Stein would lose his benefits and would not be allowed on any military base. The board’s recommendations go to a general who will either accept or deny them. If the general disagrees with the board, the case could go to the secretary of the Navy. Stein’s lawyers argued that the 9-year Marine, whose service was to end in four months, was expressing his personal views and exercising his First Amendment rights. “We’re truly surprised and disappointed but it was an honor to fight for a hero like Sgt. Stein and every other Marine’s right to speak freely,” Stein’s defense attorney Marine Capt. James Baehr said. During the hearing, the prosecutor, Capt. John Torresala, said Stein went as far as superimposing images of Obama’s face on a poster for the movie “Jackass.” Torresala argued that Stein’s behavior repeatedly violated Pentagon policy that limits the free speech rights of service members, and said he should be dismissed after ignoring warnings from his superiors about his postings. The government submitted screen grabs of Stein’s postings on one Facebook page he created called Armed Forces Tea Party, which the prosecutor said included the image of Obama on the “Jackass” movie poster. Stein also superimposed Obama’s image on a poster for “The Incredibles” movie that he changed to “The Horribles,” the prosecutor said. Torresala also said anti-Obama comments by Stein that were posted on a Facebook page used by Marine meteorologists were prejudicial to good order and discipline, and could have influenced junior Marines. Stein’s security clearance was taken away and he has no future in the Marine Corps because he can’t do his job without that clearance, Torresala said. “The Marine Corps community views the command’s lack of action as some kind of knock on good order and discipline,” Torresala said. “Our own people are questioning why this Marine is not being held accountable.” Stein has said his opinions are his own and has put a disclaimer on his Facebook page saying so. His attorneys argued service members have a right to voice their opinions as long as they do not appear to be presenting their views as being endorsed by the military. They say the Pentagon policy is vague and military officials do not understand it. The Marine Corps has said it decided to take administrative action after Stein declared on Facebook that he would not follow orders from Obama and later clarified that statement saying he would not follow unlawful orders. Stein could face other-than-honorable discharge while seeing his rank reduced to lance corporal and losing his benefits. The nine-year veteran was set to finish his service in four months. He said he was removed from his job at the Marine Corps Recruiting Depot in San Diego last month and given a desk job with no access to computers. Stein said his statement about Obama was part of an online debate about NATO allowing U.S. troops to be tried for the Quran burnings in Afghanistan. In that context, he said, he was stating that he would not follow orders from the president if it involved detaining U.S. citizens, disarming them or doing anything else that he believes would violate their constitutional rights. It’s begun. With Mitt Romney’s three-primary sweep this week, he effectively made his clinching the Republican presidential nomination a matter of when, not if. Not surprisingly, President Obama has released a new TV ad this week, in response to criticism he’s incurred from oil companies – and Mitt Romney. The President argues that he has actually boosted domestic oil production, and is only a target because he sought to end tax breaks for oil corporations. Tax breaks that would ease the burden on average Americans – by his calculus, at least. Obama’s ad not-so-subtly links big oil to, you guessed it, Mitt. Did Rick Santorum almost call President Obama the n-word? Multiple news outlets are featuring a video of the Republican President candidate speaking to a crowd in Wisconsin this week (below), where he said: “We know the candidate Barack Obama, what he was like – the anti-war government …” He then starts to say a word starting with “n-” or “ni-“. He continues, “America was a source for division around the world, that what we were doing was wrong.” Did he almost drop the n-word? Listen: Rick Santorum N-Word Obama Line Santorum’s team, of course, insists this is BS : “Give me a break. That’s unbelievable. What does it say about those that are running with this story that that’s where their mind goes. You know, I’m not going to dignify that with [a response].” The n-word, one hopes, is never in anyone’s thoughts, even subconsciously. The debates showed time and again that Rick Santorum, when frustrated, rapidly loses eloquence and becomes tongue-tied, stuttering slightly. Could that be all this is? On the flip side … what other ni-word was that supposed to be? You tell us: Was Santorum about to drop the n-bomb?
