NBC’s O’Donnell: Palin ‘Rips the Heart Out of Her Opponents’ in New Book

NBC correspondent Norah O'Donnell hyped Sarah Palin's criticism of her liberal opponents on Tuesday's Today show, stating that the former governor ” rips the heart out of some of her opponents ” in her new book. O'Donnell stated that Palin, ” in very personal terms, also questions the President's [Obama's] patriotism, concluding he has 'a stark lack of faith in the American people.' ” The correspondent covered “America By Heart,” the Republican's second book, for the second straight day. Anchor Matt Lauer introduced her report, which began 40 minutes into the 7 pm Eastern hour, by immediately noting Palin's attacks on Mr. Obama: “Sarah Palin's much-anticipated new book hits stores today. NBC News received an advanced copy last night, and the former Alaska governor is not holding back when it comes to President Obama .” O'Donnell picked up where he left off: “Well, you know, her new book is called 'America By Heart.' It's full of what she calls 'reflections on faith, family and flag.' But with all the attacks on President Obama and others, some say it could be a handbook for her for a 2012 campaign .” read more

N.Y. Times Highlighted Yale Prediction: Obama Wins 2012 Race In a ‘Landslide’

In his “Strategies” column in The New York Times , Jeff Sommer is touting how things are looking up for Barack Obama. Try this: Based on the facts at hand right now, Mr. Obama is likely to win the 2012 election in a landslide. That, at least, is the prediction of Ray C. Fair, a Yale economist and an expert on econometrics and on the relationship of economics and politics. What’s the basis of this forecast? In a nutshell: “It’s the economy, stupid.” read more

Lauer to Lisa Murkowski: Will You Stand Up to Republicans Who Want Obama to Fail?

NBC's Matt Lauer, on Thursday's Today show, invited on Alaskan Senator Lisa Murkowski to applaud her presumptive write-in ballot win over Republican candidate Joe Miller and asked if she would now “stand up against” Republicans “who may feel that the only way for them to succeed” is for Barack Obama to fail. After Lauer went through the perfunctory congratulations, he asked the candidate who failed to win her party's own primary, if she would, essentially, become a thorn in the side of Republicans as seen in the following question: MATT LAUER: You, you talk about governance based on anger or fear. You're a moderate Republican. You've said that you do not pass the purity test that the Tea Party has set out. You said something else. You said, said “I will tell you I'm not one of those who wants Obama to fail.” Will you stand up against other Republicans who may feel that the only way for them to succeed is for the President not to succeed? Lauer also made sure to note that since Sarah Palin endorsed Joe Miller, Murkowski's victory could also be seen as a diminishment of the former Alaskan Governor's “prestige” and “power,” as queried: “There are a lot of other people who are saying you defeated Sarah Palin. She backed Mr. Miller in her home state, put the prestige of her power behind that, that endorsement. How much does this say about her power and impact going forward, in your opinion?” (video after the break) read more

The Race to Save Haiti’s 50 Endangered Frog Species From Extinction

Photo credit: Claudio Contreras/iLCP The devastation and tragedy that has beset Haiti seems to have to limit. Deforestation, mudslides, hurricanes, and the earthquake earlier this year have destroyed what few resources remained there and left the people with no choice but to rebuild their lives from the rubble. And though the human victims are, understandably, the focus of relief efforts, they are not the only casualties of the recent string of events. Haiti’s wildlife hangs on the brink of extinction and, with little to no endemic habitat remaining, have no hope for survival on the island. Fortu… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Where That Green $32 Billion Went: Recovery Act Update

Photo: US Army, CC It was the first big move made by the Obama administration, and yet the stimulus bill remains controversial and largely misunderstood. There’s little disagreement among economists that the Recovery Act spared the US from slipping into a full-bore depression, or that it created or saved millions of jobs. And yet, according to polls, most Americans feel that it did little to help the country, or themselves in particular — questions about ‘where all that money went’ are commonplace. So let’s take a look. Remember, bi… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Rush Limbaugh Race-Bait du Jour: Obama And ‘Gang’ Are ‘Graffiti’ On Walls Of American History

Conservative radio host and serial race-baiter Rush Limbaugh has done it again. To no one’s surprise, Limbaugh accompanied a rant about how Barack Obama’s presidency is “graffiti on the walls of American history” with both a reference to Obama’s “gang,” and a mock-up of a “tagged” Mount Rushmore on his website. The Atlantic’s Andrew Sullivan calls Rush out for his worn-out tactics, but fails to put a fine enough point on it. Rush Limbaugh is not only a race-baiter, he is a coward. Transcript: (emphasis mine) This guy is an utter wrecking ball all by himself on the world stage to the point now of getting embarrassing. This presidency of Obama’s, it doesn’t take much to irritate the left. Try this: “Barack Obama’s presidency is graffiti on the walls of American history.” That’s what his administration is. No more than graffiti on the walls of American history. We have a juvenile delinquent for a president who has ruined so much public and private property, not even his gang is making much of an effort here to protect him. It’s an utter disaster. Sullivan asks if there’s anyone more adept at exploiting racial dog whistles, noting “It’s always egregious enough to be calculatingly offensive, but never quite an open and shut case, because most of all the talk radio host revels in being called a racist so that he can throw up his hands and complain about liberal race-baiting.” True, except it is an open and shut case. Limbaugh’s time-tested modus operandi is to toss out some limp disclaimer, like he’s just “tweaking” the “drive-by media,” or in this case, “irritat(ing) the left,” but they hold no logical water. Intentionally conflating the first black President with an urban gang tagger isn’t irritating to “the left,” it’s irritating to everyone but the racists and race-baiters. While Sullivan identifies the “self-consciousness” as what makes this “so disgusting,” the really nauseating thing here is the cowardice. Rush Limbaugh is probably one of the few media superstars who doesn’t need to hide behind coy, impish disclaimers. Nobody’s ever going to fire him. Despite that fact, he continues to rely on these slight fig leaves as a way to disown his divisive intent. No sale. Case closed. added by: TimALoftis
