Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ Video: A Pop-Culture Cheat Sheet

Gaga’s latest is full of nods to fashion, film, fine art and the occasional West Texas weirdo. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Tom Briglia/ WireImage By now, you’ve had a few hours to digest Lady Gaga’s brand-new “Born This Way” video , a starry, swirly, some would say gnarly clip that features plenty of astral afterbirth, a snarling man-zombie and exactly one shimmering unicorn. So, yes, “BTW” is most definitely an eye-catching, high-concept thing — as Gaga told BBC’s Radio 1 , it’s meant to showcase “the birth of a new race,” which doesn’t make it all that different from all of her videos, if you think about it. And, much like her earlier work, “BTW” is also loaded with blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moments, carefully constructed odes to fashion, film, fine art and, uh, West Texas weirdos. So, in the same way we broke down her “Telephone” and “Alejandro” clips, we’ve decided to put “Born This Way” under the microscope, watching (and rewatching) each frame to compile a pop-culture cheat sheet that’s alphabetized and cross-referenced for your convenience. Believe us, this took way longer than you could imagine, but it was worth it. (Oh, and despite our best efforts, we’re sure there’s something we missed, which is why we need your help: Let us know what you spot in the comments below!) And so, without further ado, here’s our “Born This Way” pop-culture cheat sheet”: Alexander McQueen : The late fashion designer has always been an influence on Gaga (she wore his famous “armadillo heels” in the “Bad Romance” video and one of his creations on the red carpet of the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards), and in “Born This Way,” her outfit at the beginning of the video — where she’s hovering above Earth, giving birth to a starchild (or something) — seems directly influenced by the natural flourishes of McQueen’s final collection , which featured feathers, mock scales and faux wings. Denny Brewer : Deep-fried Texas musician/oddball who, along with his son, plays in the band Refried Ice Cream. In recent weeks, Brewer has risen to fame thanks to his recorded ramblings about alternate dimensions, phase-shifting, lizard people and pomegranates that serve as the through-line to Bright Eyes’ The People’s Key album. Much of what Gaga declares in her “Manifesto of Mother Monster” is lifted from Brewer’s playbook: a “mitosis of the future,” a “multiverse” and the constantly changing concepts of “temporal” and “eternal.” H.R. Giger : Swiss-born surrealist painter and sculptor, perhaps best known for designing the terrifying, sexualized beasts in the “Alien” franchise. After Gaga gives birth to her “evil” spawn, he contorts his body in a way that, when coupled with sinewy fabrics, appears to be a direct nod to Giger’s chilling work. Janus : The two-faced Roman god of gates, doorways, beginnings, endings and time. At the very beginning of “Born This Way,” Gaga’s Mother Monster features two faces, and, given the whole “rebirth” concept behind the video, that seems less than coincidental. Madonna : By now, you’re probably aware that, sonically, “Born This Way” sounds a lot like Madonna’s “Express Yourself.” So, perhaps as a bit of a joke, Gaga closes “BTW” by mimicking Madge’s iconic gap between her two front teeth. Michael Jackson : As she tries to assure her spot in the upper echelons of pop royalty, Gaga is obviously taking cues from the man who eternally sits on the throne: the late, great King of Pop. At the end of “Born This Way,” she pays direct homage to the man, strutting down a dark alleyway, slightly glowing (

Director Says She’s Glad Rih Rih’s “S&M” Video Is Banned In 11 Countries

Immediately after Rihanna dropped her “S&M” video on Tuesday, people started talking about how controversial it was … like the song isn’t called “S&M”. By Wednesday, it had been banned in 11 countries and the U.K.’s BBC 1 Radio said listeners won’t hear the song before 7pm. Which, to the video’s director Melina Moustakas, means she and Rihanna did their job. “When I go out to make something, I kind of go out with the intention to get it banned — [well] not to get it banned, I always want my stuff played — but to make something provocative,” Matsoukas told MTV News. “So when you do something that’s provocative, that’s usually a repercussion. It’s gonna be talked about or banned or slandered in some way. But it’s making an effect and people are having a dialogue about it, so, to me, that’s successful.” For Matsoukas, it’s the video’s harshest critics who are the most amusing. “I mean, the song is called ‘S&M’!” she laughed. “So I think that the imagery follows suit with what the song is. I wouldn’t play down the imagery for a song that’s so strong. It makes sense to develop it further and really take it there. So if they don’t want to play it, [fans] can watch it somewhere else.” One of those places airing the video uncensored is MTV. Matsoukas, who previously directed Rihanna’s “Rude Boy” and “Rockstar 101″ clips and Beyoncé’s “Why Don’t You Love Me,” said it’s the first time MTV hasn’t requested changes to one of her videos. “I haven’t talked to Rihanna about the controversy,” Matsoukas said. “But she was happy that MTV had no changes, and she was definitely like, ‘See? We made it through!’ Because the whole time we were like, ‘If we use ball gags and we show this, are they gonna play it?’And we just went for it and didn’t care, and people seem to be embracing that.” Again, we applaud Rihanna for owning her “metaphorical” ho sh*t. Tobey Maguire Thinks New ‘Spider-Man’ Suit Is ‘Cool’

‘I’m excited to see it in action,’ the ex-‘Spider-Man’ star says about the outfit Andrew Garfield will wear in the upcoming prequel. By Terri Schwartz Tobey Maguire Photo: George Pimentel/ Getty Images PARK CITY, Utah — Ever since Andrew Garfield was announced to star as Spider-Man in Marc Webb’s big-screen reboot of the Marvel superhero franchise, all eyes have been turned to Tobey Maguire to see what his response would be. It’s not so much that Garfield replaced Maguire as Peter Parker as that Sony, who produces the films, decided that the series would be better served if it followed the teenage version of Parker through his transition — you know, to tap into the “Twilight” teen audience. And thus, the yet-untitled “Spider-Man” prequel was born. But there never has been any hard feelings between the two Spideys, at least publicly. The first picture of Garfield as Spider-Man hit the Internet on January 13, and it showed a different take on the famed suit than the one Maguire donned in the three Sam Raimi films. MTV recently caught up with Maguire at the Sundance Film Festival, and the former “Spider-Man” star said he has seen the new suit and liked what he saw. “I thought it looked cool,” revealed Maguire. “I mean, I think they did a great job with the design of it, and I’m excited to see it in action.” It’s not the first time Maguire has voiced his approval of the “Spider-Man” prequel . During a December interview with BBC News, Garfield admitted that Maguire had reached out to him to congratulate him on the role and give him his backing. “He sent me a lovely message through a mutual friend,” said Garfield. “He gave me his support, and it meant a great deal, of course, because part of the reason I love and have continued to love this character was because of his portrayal. To step into those shoes is no mean feat. It was generous of him to reach out and say something, so I’m thankful.” The “Spider-Man” prequel is filming right now, and is set to be released on July 3, 2012. Who Looked More Bangin’: Pink Frankenstein vs. Sideshow Rih Rih

Seen on the scene, Thursday , leaving her London hotel, Nicki Minaj rocks a pink, cotton candy colored, sky high wig; very reminiscent of well, Lady Frankenstein. Meanwhile, Rihanna was out in Hollyweird hiding her face under a new wig, looking like Sideshow Bob’s red-headed step cousin. We know they both looked like clowns, but which look would you actually consider rocking on any day other than October 31?? By the way, do you notice which accessory Nicki’s not wearing? Maybe her secret wedding is too close to being uncovered. SplashNews.com

Flipping Birds! Prison Pigeon Found With Coke And Weed Tied To Its Back

Drug smugglers are giving new meaning to the term ‘flipping birds.’ Police say inmates are training pigeons to smuggle drugs after a pigeon was found struggling to fly over a prison wall with a sack of coke strapped to its back. (Newser) – Police in Colombia busted a pigeon narco-trafficker after it was caught trying to fly into a prison with too heavy a load. The bird, which is now being cared for by authorities, was found struggling to fly with 40 grams of marijuana and 5 grams of cocaine paste strapped to its wings, the BBC reports. Police, who believe the bird was trained by inmates, say they’ve caught other pigeons attempting to carry phone cards into the jail. Talk about criminal ingenuity. Source

Pete Postlethwaite Dead At 64

Oscar-nominated performer appeared in ‘Inception,’ ‘The Usual Suspects,’ ‘In the Name of the Father.’ By Gil Kaufman Pete Postlethwaite Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/ Getty Images British actor Pete Postlethwaite, best known to American audiences for his Oscar-nominated role in 1993’s biographical film about Irish Republican Army bombers “In the Name of the Father,” died on Sunday at the age of 64. BBC News reports that Postlethwaite, who also appeared in the 2010 box-office smash “Inception,” passed away peacefully in a hospital in Shropshire, England, after a long battle with cancer. Postlethwaite’s 40-year career encompassed both stage and screen, including a stint in the 1980s with the Royal Shakespeare Company after years of working in regional English theater. With the kind of instantly recognizable face crucial for a character actor — sunken, bony cheeks, broad forehead and a bulbous nose — Postlethwaite made his way to the screen in 1988 in the British drama “Distant Voices, Still Lives,” one of many rough-edged, working-class roles he would take on over the years. He was born in Warrington, England, on February 7, 1946, and initially trained to be a teacher, serving as a drama instructor at Loreto College in Manchester before taking a detour into acting. His breakthrough came playing Daniel Day-Lewis’ father in the political drama “In the Name of the Father,” which earned him a best-supporting-actor Oscar nomination. He followed that part with other memorable roles in films such as “The Usual Suspects,” “Brassed Off” and “Amistad.” Postlethwaite also made forays into big-budget Hollywood fare, including “Alien 3,” Baz Luhrmann’s “Romeo + Juliet,” “Inception,” “Clash of the Titans” and “The Lost World: Jurassic Park.” It was his work in that dinosaur sequel that led director Steven Spielberg to dub the veteran performer the “best actor in the world.” Postlethwaite returned to the stage in 2008 to star in Shakespeare’s “King Lear” at the Everyman Theater in Liverpool, where he had gotten his start nearly 40 years earlier. He is survived by his wife and two children. Related Photos Remembering Pete Postlethwaite

‘Lord Of The Rings’ Star Billy Boyd Marries Ali McKinnon

Actor who played Pippin in trilogy weds Wednesday (December 29). By Terri Schwartz Billy Boyd Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images Love continued to linger in the air Wednesday (December 29) as Billy Boyd, best known as Pippin the hobbit in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, tied the knot with his longtime girlfriend, Ali McKinnon. Though he earned international fame and legions of fans for a quest for a different One Ring, The Evening Times reports Boyd kept the wedding very small and intimate. Boyd and McKinnon met in 2002 at a pantomime (British winter musical comedy theater) she was appearing in. The two have a 4-year-old son, Jack, and have been living together in Glasgow’s West End for several years. The Evening Times reports the two were married at Oran Mor, just around the corner from their home. The venue sounds like something straight out of Middle Earth, but it’s actually a converted church that was turned into a cultural center including a couple of restaurants and bars, a nightclub and, of course, a beautiful private-events space. Oran Mor wedding coordinator Louise Turner said she’d met with the couple a few times and “they have been lovely to deal with.” She said only 30 friends and family members attended the ceremony, and the reception was planned for about 160. “It’s not a massive bash, and it will be quite intimate,” Turner said. Though the “Rings” cast has stayed close since the premiere of “Return of the King” in 2003, the Times implied that Boyd’s co-stars — including Elijah Wood, Ian McKellan and Orlando Bloom — did not attend the wedding. In addition to his role in the three “Lord of the Rings” films, Boyd won acclaim for his roles in “The Stone of Destiny,” “The Flying Scotsman” and “On a Clear Day.” He was named Britain’s most eligible bachelor, placing ahead of Prince William, who got engaged this year. Send your well-wishes to the couple in the comments section below!

Andrew Garfield Says Tobey Maguire Gave His ‘Spider-Man’ Blessing

‘It was generous of him to reach out and say something, so I’m thankful,’ new Spidey tells BBC News. By Terri Schwartz Andrew Garfield Photo: Jon Furniss/ Getty Images One would expect that there were some hard feelings after Sony dropped their planned “Spider-Man 4” movie early this year and chose instead to pursue a reboot of the franchise following a teenage Peter Parker. But the star of the upcoming “Spider-Man” film, Andrew Garfield, said that isn’t the case. In fact, during an interview with BBC News , Garfield said that, though he still hasn’t met Tobey Maguire, the previous star of the “Spider-Man” franchise has willingly passed the torch to the young British actor. “[Maguire] sent me a lovely message through a mutual friend,” Garfield revealed. “He gave me his support, and it meant a great deal, of course, because part of the reason I love and have continued to love this character was because of his portrayal. To step into those shoes is no mean feat. It was generous of him to reach out and say something, so I’m thankful.” Garfield was cast as Spidey on July 1 after a series of casting rumors . This has been a big year for Garfield, as he earned his first Golden Globe nomination for his role in “The Social Network” and is likely to earn an Oscar nod as well. Maguire has been doing pretty well for himself since the news too. As a huge fan of Spider-Man since he was 4 years old, Garfield was thrilled to be cast as his comic book hero. This franchise is a big step away from his previous dramatic roles, but Garfield compared Stan Lee’s comic books to a “modern kind of Greek mythology” in terms of their themes. Filming began on the film two weeks before Christmas, and the star confirmed that the footage is being shot in 3-D for its planned 2012 release. Garfield said footage was shown on the camera monitors in 3-D as well, so director Marc Webb and the rest of the production staff would sit behind the camera wearing their “silly glasses” while he and co-star Emma Stone performed. As for his casting, Garfield told BBC News, “It’s wonderful in theory, isn’t it? You kind of go, ‘Well, this is going to be great.’ But then, of course, in practice, it’s obviously a great deal of hard work and a great deal of pressure, but wonderful. It’s incredible.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Spider-Man.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Rupert Everett Lambasts Hollywood, "Tasteless" Jennifer Aniston Movies

Actor Rupert Everett is not shy about expressing himself … or naming names if he’s bitter enough about who becomes a star and who doesn’t. Speaking to BBC Radio 4 about how homosexuals fare in Hollywood, the interview eventually turned to the question of audience perception. Rupert argued that no matter what fans may think, the industry decides who will become A-list. How else to you explain Jennifer Aniston?! The Switch? The Bounty Hunter?! Come on! “If you look and analyze the careers of many, many, many stars, you’ll find that they’re mostly sustained by the business,” he said. “I’m not going to start naming names of people whose films have not succeeded at the box office, but you’ll find lots of women and lots of men that the powers that be determine are right and they’ll stand with them for quite a long time.” “Jennifer Aniston will have so many absolute flops, but she’s still a member of that club, and like a star forming in the universe, things will swirl around her and it will suddenly solidify into another vital tasteless rom-com.” Oooookay … Rude? Bitter? You bet. Although The Switch , The Bounty Hunter, Love Happens and Management were pretty terrible, we’ll give him that. Marley & Me was a big hit, though, and Friends? One of the most popular shows in history. Plus, she married Brad Pitt and has that hair. In the end, you don’t have to be a professional critic to observe correctly that Jen has made some bad movies. But there is an audience. If they weren’t profitable, why would they continue to be made? Rom-coms may be tasteless, but they’re cheap to produce. Cha. Ching. Maybe she’s riding her past successes a bit these days, but does she really deserve to be singled out like this? Go get a life, Rupert! Just don’t even get near her .
