Queen Latifah took the stage at this year’s Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride Festival in the Southern California city Saturday (May 19), and her highness was happy to be in the presence of “her people,” according to EUR Web. Inquiries into her sexual preference have long followed Latifah, and headlining the event— now in its 29th year—may have marked a coming-out of sorts for the mogul… Continue
Headliner White closed out the first day of the beachfront festival in Alabama with a set long on hits, solos. By James Montgomery Jack White performs at Hangout Fest in Mobile, AL Photo: WireImage GULF SHORES, Alabama — Judging by his cadaverous complexion, Jack White probably doesn’t make it out to the beach all that often. Which is probably why his Friday night set at the Hangout Festival felt less like a headlining gig and more like one long (long) victory lap: He was determined to enjoy the experience. Sure, White took the stage long after the sun had set over the stretch of white-sand beach the Hangout calls home (it’s definitely the only fest where going barefoot is not only a viable option, but practically encouraged), but spurred on by the cheers of a raucous crowd and cooled by the gentle breeze of the Gulf, he tore through a wild 90-minute set. It was one that dove deep into his back catalog — featuring not only White’s new Blunderbuss tunes, but also songs from the White Stripes, the Dead Weather, the Raconteurs and the Danger Mouse-helmed Rome project too — and saw him break out roughly 100 fret-assaulting guitar solos, two backing bands … and exactly one fedora. He spoke barely a word (and nary a metaphor ) during his time onstage, preferring instead to let the music do the talking. Or, more precisely, the yelling. Because from the moment he kicked things off with a high-octane version of the Stripes’ “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground,” to the second the final echoes of “Seven Nation Army” were escaping out into the night air, White was plenty loud. And equally loose. “I Cut Like a Buffalo,” “Love Interruption” and (especially) “Ball and Biscuit” each unspooled over several minutes, with White stomping and pulling solos from his guitar, goofy smile on his face, while both of his crack backing bands followed close behind. It was clear that, on Friday night, White wanted to jam. Which is why, in just about every conceivable way, this wasn’t the kind of show you’d expect from the normally uptight White. Of course, he was still dressed like a country mortician and, sure, he made his backing bands dress in near-matching unis (black for his male band, the Buzzards; white for the female counterpart, the Peacocks), and the lighting scheme onstage never strayed from “ethereal blue,” but he seemed to draw genuine joy from letting his songs breathe: He turned “Hotel Yorba” into a hoedown, lent extra punch to new tracks like “Sixteen Saltines” and “Hypocritical Kiss” and led the audience in an extended chant during “Army,” which has almost inexplicably become his signature song on both sides of the Atlantic. Maybe it had something to do with the Gulf Stream, the postcard-perfect setting of the Hangout Fest (they have palm trees on the beach !) and the day of terrific music he was closing out — Friday also featured standout sets from Wilco, Alabama Shakes and Yelawolf, to name just a few — or maybe White just wanted to cut loose. But last night, his solos rang loud and proud, his voice was voluminous and creaky in all the right ways, and both of his bands proved worthy traveling partners on the lengthy musical excursions on which he led them. In short, White certainly seems to be enjoying life as a solo artist. Especially when he’s playing the songs he made with others. Now, if he could only work on that tan … you get the feeling he’d become a regular down here at the Hangout. Did you catch Jack White’s set at the Hangout Festival? Mini-movie is inspired by the upcoming G.O.O.D. Music album of the same name. By Gil Kaufman Kanye West Photo: Getty Images Kanye West doesn’t know how to do small, so whenever the rapper unveils a new project it’s almost always on the biggest platform possible. That explains why his new “short art film,” “Cruel Summer,” will debut on the fabulous Palm Beach in Cannes, France during the Cannes Film Festival. The hush-hush movie, inspired by the upcoming all-star G.O.O.D. Music album of the same name, will world premiere on May 23 and remain open to the public for two days afterward. It is being screened out of competition in Cannes amid the world-famous film fest. And, this being Kanye, the project is described as, “a fusion of short film and art installation … an immersive ‘7 screen experience’ for the eyes and ears unlike anything West has attempted before.” Among those listed as starring in the film are comedian Aziz Ansari, Kid Cudi, Lebanese actress Razane Jammal (“Djinn”) and Palestinian actor Ali Suliman (“The Kingdom”). Yeezy is listed as the producer, writer and director of the effort, based on a screenplay by Elon Rutberg, who was the associate director of the Throne’s “N—-s in Paris” video. The co-director is Alexandre Moors, who worked with West on “Runaway” as well as the “Paris” clip. Kanye and Cudi were spotted filming scenes for the movie earlier this year in the middle eastern nation of Qatar, but little or no information has emerged about the subject matter or plot of the project. Expectations are high given the over-the-top look and feel of ‘Ye’s last mini-flick, 2010’s “Runaway.” Click here for ticket information for the screenings. ‘I feel like people are giving me too much credit,’ Kim Spradlin tells MTV News about winning the latest season of ‘Survivor.’ By Josh Wigler Kim Spradlin Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Thirty-nine days, 18 people, one Survivor … and it’s exactly who it should have been all along. Surprising nobody but relieving everybody, 29-year-old bridal shop owner Kim Spradlin won the million-dollar prize on “Survivor One World” on Sunday, and she deserves every penny. Blue-eyed Kim wasn’t just the best-liked person out on the beach, she was the strategic mastermind who engineered the complete collapse of the game’s men, a physical powerhouse with four immunity victories to her name, and a savvy enough player to sniff out a hidden immunity idol she never even had to use. Watching the season, it didn’t take an eagle-eyed “Survivor” fan to know that Kim had all the makings of a fantastic winner. But try telling that to Kim herself. Speaking with MTV News at the “Survivor One World” finale, the pride of Salani revealed that going into the evening, she honestly didn’t think she had a chance at taking home the grand prize. “Honestly, it was just starting to feel too obvious,” Spradlin said of watching herself on television this season. “I thought there’s no way [I’m winning]. Something’s up. Something’s wrong. When you’re out there on the island, you get really paranoid, and you carry that back into your life. So I feel like I came back concerned that I wasn’t getting [the win].” But it was a different story out on the island. Kim weaved her way through numerous alliances to secure a top spot at the end of the game, leaving more than a few bitter jurors behind in her wake. Though she initially feared their wrath going into the final tribal council, she ultimately walked away from that experience feeling encouraged. “At the very end of the final tribal council was the first time where I really thought I could win this,” she said. “Up until then, I hadn’t heard the jury speak. I had no idea how mad they were going to be. And [throughout the season], they looked really mad. I didn’t think I had that great of a chance until I heard them talk.” In the end, Kim credits her win to two things. “I really wanted to keep my options open. I said that a lot on the show. If something went wrong here — if Chelsea was med-evaced one day — I’d have other options. I never wanted to put all of my eggs in one basket,” she said. “But at the same time, I wanted to be this great presence that people trusted, that felt calming, that people liked having around. I wanted people to think that I was on their side, so that they’d keep me around for them.” Her strategy worked, and now, Kim’s already being talked about as one of the all-time great “Survivor” winners. Indeed, during a commercial break at the live finale, original “Survivor” winner Richard Hatch piped up from the back of the Ed Sullivan Theater to describe Kim as one of the best players to ever play the game. That’s pretty high praise within the “Survivor” community, to say the least. “Honestly, I’m shocked,” she said of people’s reactions to her game play. “I feel like people are giving me too much credit sometimes. It just came naturally to me. And I got lucky — I think that’s a big part of this game. I’ve heard people refer to the butterfly effect out there: If someone stumbles upon a little thing, everything could end up totally differently. I think that’s very true.” Luck is a factor, true, but there’s no doubting that Kim’s inherent understanding of the game of “Survivor” fueled her victory as well. Now, with whispers of all-star seasons coming up in the future — the next season, set in the Philippines, is already slated to bring three former players back into the mix — fans are already ready to see Kim return to the beach and walk all over her competition again. The question is: Is Kim up for another round of “Survivor” action? “How do you say no to playing ‘Survivor’?” she said with a grin, before adding, “But I’m glad I’m not leaving tomorrow!” Previously in MTV News’ “Survivor” coverage:
I don’t think this is cool at all, I’m all for chicks frolicking around in the ocean in their bikinis, but this haircut just isn’t working for me. Here’s Anne Hathaway at the beach over the weekend showing off her annoying little boy haircut. I don’t like it. Not that it ruins the fact that she looks pretty damn good in a bikini and that it’s a nice little treat get shots of her half naked, but I would have preferred to see a ponytail somewhere. Put on a bathing cap or something so we can at least pretend she’s a woman.
