Catholic League Wants Madonna 86’d From Super Bowl

File this under Lost Causes: The Catholic League is calling on the NFL to ban Madonna from performing at the Super Bowl, which she recently agreed to do. Bill Donohue wrote to the NFL, saying they “would do well to drop any plans it may have about having Madonna perform during the Super Bowl .” Why? Because in 2004, the NFL invited ‘N Sync’s JC Chasez to sing during the halftime of the Pro Bowl, only to rescind the offer due to some suggestive lyrics. That was JC Chasez. This is Madonna. “The NFL cannot expect Catholics to be treated any different,” the group writes. “For decades, Madonna has blatantly offended Christians, especially Catholics.” “Her offensive lyrics, lewd behavior and misappropriation of sacred symbols are reason enough. Worse, Madonna has repeatedly ridiculed the heart and soul of Christianity: Jesus, Our Blessed Mother, the Eucharist and the Crucifixion.” She also hates hydrangeas . Don’t forget that. Who Will Replace Hank Williams, Jr., on ESPN?

Hank Williams Jr. and his rowdy friends are long gone, having been fired by ESPN Thursday in the wake of his controversial remarks about President Obama. Who will the network replace him with on Monday Night Football? We guarantee it’s not who you think, and likely isn’t permanent. But NFL great Barry Sanders will now be doing a video segment that previews the game . “Ok, I admit it,” the Hall of Fame running back Tweeted. “I will be at MNF this week and doing the intro.” Said ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz also said: “This is the format we’ll likely use the remainder of the season. We haven’t made any decisions beyond that.” Seems like a nice quick fix for the network. Pump out a slickly produced hype video, involve a football figure associated with one of the teams (Detroit hosts Jay Cutler and the Bears), bada bing. Perfectly usable content, certainly less expensive to produce and with little chance of anyone comparing Obama to Hitler . Call it a win-win all around. [Photo: WENN.com]

Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler: Back Together!

Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler are reportedly reconciling. The pair is “working it out,” a source told People Tuesday. “They’re not officially engaged again but they’re definitely talking and figuring things out.” The former Hills star and Chicago Bears QB – who got engaged in April after just seven months of dating – abruptly called off their engagement in July. This should help Jay soften the blow of the Bears’ 1-2 start. Kristin Cavallari was “dumped,” “absolutely devastated” and “in shock” over how the dream wedding she was planning for the spring of 2012 ended. While their previous relationship had moved too quickly, according to sources, the couple will be taking a different approach to dating this time around. “Everything happened much too fast when they first got together. So this time they’re just taking things slow,” the source said. “They’re talking a lot.” So much for the rumor of her dating Mark Ballas . Those two do have good chemistry … on Dancing With the Stars . Here’s their routine last night: Kristin Cavallari on Dancing With the Stars (Week 2)

A “Lil Positivity” After Suicide: Former Chicago Bears Player Dave Duerson’s Brain Donated For Research

Dave Duerson’s death has been ruled a suicide and despite the tragedy, his family has decided to donate his brain for research: The family of former Bears safety Dave Duerson has agreed to donate his brain for research into chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a condition linked to athletes who have sustained repeated concussions. Chris Nowinski at the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy at Boston University School of Medicine told The Associated Press he was contacted by a representative of the NFL Players Association on Friday, then worked with a representative of Duerson’s family. “I can confirm that Mr. Duerson’s family has agreed to donate his brain to the CSTE at BU School of Medicine,” Nowinski said in an e-mail. Duerson died Thursday in Sunny Isles Beach, Fla. The Miami-Dade medical examiner ruled the death a suicide, Miami-Dade police spokesman Roy Rutland said Sunday. He confirmed that a gun was used but did not specify where Duerson shot himself. It’s unclear why Duerson killed himself, although his company had been forced into receivership several years ago and he had lost his home to foreclosure, former Bears coach Mike Ditka told the AP in a phone interview Sunday. “I knew he had some problems, I knew he lost the business, I knew all that,” said Ditka, whose Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund works to help provide for retired players, which includes funding research into health-related issues such as brain injuries. “It’s just a tragedy,” Ditka said. “It really is.” A native of Muncie, Ind., Duerson was a third-round draft pick by the Bears in 1983 out of Notre Dame and played 11 seasons in the NFL. He won Super Bowls with the 1985 Bears and 1990 Giants and played in four Pro Bowls. Ditka said he isn’t sure whether Duerson was having any issues connected with his playing career, but he acknowledged that it has become common among former players. Source

Scientists Dress Up as Pandas to Fool Them (and Us?)

Photo: the Independent O.k.; which one is the real panda and which is the scientist? It’s a tough one: scientists in China are dressing up as pandas in order to prepare the bears for release into the wild. Pandas are an endangered species, there are just 2,500 left and they can’t get too used to human contact because it will make them too tame. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Pakistan Floods Have Ravaged Bear Sanctuary, Killing 20 of the 23 Bears Living at Kund Park Sanctuary | Video

Pakistan floods ravage bear sanctuary Aug 20, 2010 Sadly, WSPA must report some distressing news from our bear baiting project in Pakistan. The recent floods have severely affected the Kund Park sanctuary, resulting in the tragic death of 20 of the 23 bears living there. The death of these much-loved bears has devastated BRC and WSPA staff and we know it will be equally upsetting for our supporters. Suzi Morris, WSPA UK Director said: “I hope it is of some comfort to know that it was the generosity of WSPA supporters that allowed the final chapter of these bears’ lives to be one of peace and tranquillity, safe from the violence and fear of bear baiting.” Rescue against the odds Initially it was feared that all of the 23 bears at Kund Park had been lost but Babu, Maylu and Sohrab were found alive in the floodwaters. In difficult circumstances, BRC staff transported them to the near-complete, new sanctuary at Balkasar. It is now more urgent than ever that building work on the Balkasar sanctuary is finished and the team at BRC are working flat out to achieve this. Over the past few weeks the world has watched as heavy monsoons have caused the worst floods in Pakistan for 80 years. At the time of writing, up to 14 million people have been affected by the floods and an estimated 1,600 have lost their lives. The damage to the Kund Park sanctuary is so severe that is seems unlikely that it can be rebuilt in the near future, perhaps at all. Thanks to WSPA supporters, the new Balkasar sanctuary is due to be completed in October and will have the capacity to provide a home for Babu, Maylu and Sohrab and for the remaining bears still being used to fight in bear baiting arenas. Why was the sanctuary so badly hit? The Kund Park sanctuary is located between the Indus and Kabul Rivers in North-West Frontier Province, the epicentre of the recent floods. A flood warning system was in place but the dramatic rise in floodwaters – reaching 60ft above river level – did not give BRC staff enough time to remove the bears from danger. The team did all they could to try to secure the safety of the bears by moving them to higher ground, staying at the sanctuary for as long as possible before they had to evacuate for their own personal safety. Tireless search and rescue As soon as the floodwaters receded, Fakhar and his team worked around the clock to search for the bears. Three bears were found alive but after days of searching, they had to face the devastating realisation that 20 of their beloved bears were confirmed dead. WSPA is extremely impressed by the fortitude of BRC staff and their response to such a devastating tragedy. Many of the local staff were personally affected, some losing their homes to the floods, but this did not stop their dedication to securing the safety of the bears they have spent years caring for. _____ Amongst the drowned bears were names that WSPA supporters will know well Star: rescued only months earlier from the horrors of bear baiting, thanks to BRC and the wonderful response of WSPA supporters to a recent appeal. Lailah: saved from bear baiting in 2008 and featured in a WSPA appeal. Rustam: liberated by Victor Watkins, WSPA’s bear expert, in 2001 and one of the oldest bears at the Kund Park sanctuary. Dewa: confiscated from poachers in 2009 aged just five months old, was taken to the Kund Park sanctuary along with his brother, Babu, who was saved from the floods. The other two lucky survivors are three year old Maylu was rescued in 2006, saved from the black market bear trade. Sohrab is a two year old Asiatic black bear who had been living peacefully at the Kund Park sanctuary since 2007. added by: EthicalVegan

Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’ Gummi Bears Are ‘Rude, Crude Imitations,’ Haribo Says

‘We were as shocked as Katy Perry when we saw that these were not Haribo Goldbears but poor imitations,’ rep says. By Kara Warner with Jem Aswad Gummi Bears in Katy Perry’s video for “California Gurls” Photo: Capitol Records The badly behaving Gummi Bears featured in Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” video have manufacturers of the candy saying: Those aren’t our bears! Despite the video’s cheery feel, it features two otherwise friendly-looking, oversized Gummi Bears greeting Perry not with hugs and a hello, but with a rude hand gesture: The offending bear in question apparently gives the singer the finger early in the clip. Perry told MTV News earlier this week that she likes to inject her own “naughty twist” into her work, but representatives from well-known manufacturers Trolli and Haribo have insisted that their bears would never behave in such a way. “Those are definitely not Trolli Gummi Bears in the video because Trolli Gummi Bears would never be that rude,” John Leonardo, senior brand manager of Farley’s and Sathers (which owns Trolli), told MTV News on Wednesday. “Trolli bears would extend their chubby little arms and give Katy a big old bear hug and whisper, ‘Everything is going to be alright.’ ” And on Thursday (June 17), a representative for Haribo, another manufacturer, told MTV News: “We were as shocked as Katy Perry when we saw on closer inspection that these were not Haribo Goldbears but poor imitations. “After all, Haribo Goldbears are happy, fun and sweet, not rude and crude!” Between both manufacturers, if Perry decides to film a video where the Gummi Bears have undergone anger-management therapy and been rehabilitated, she’ll know exactly where to look.
